Funnier than Chris's Live special on Netflix
djrobe12 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Watched Chris's Live show first, but not live. This comedy had me in tears. Chris's show was just average, but Marlon was great. He shows what the black man really goes through to make it in the industry. I would give him a point in half more than Chris's comedy special. When he was talking about love, I started tearing up. The women wanted to hear him belt out some 90's R&B, but guy can't carry a note. Then when he said he has so many family members that his family would come out the woodwork if Will would of slapped him. I was dying. Watching Chris's show I only laughed a few times. So if you haven't seen this give this a try. Give Marlon a leading man part in a serious romantic drama. And don't make it with a white girl being his partner either.

He Almost Lost Me
seansoulo7311 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Marlon is one of those physical, animated comedians, and although the Wayans family is known for its pool of talented members Marlon goes overboard sometimes. This special was all about him interjecting himself into the life stories of the Will, Jada and Chris Rock drama.

He had a personal bone to pick with Rock, but I was scratching my head as he belabored how much he enjoyed watching Will slap Chris. I was like, when is he gonna move on to the next joke or topic? He never did! There was a dry spell for a bit until he began to explain the history and beef he had with Rock, Will and Jada, and luckily turned the show around.

If you watch, I was about ready to agree with what his brother, Damon Wayans told him after being heckled by Rock! It did get better, but I wouldn't suggest doing what he did... Staying on a singular topic. He called the trio his "friends" while talking major ish about them in the same breath. Well, if that's how Marlon treats his friends, I'd hate to see what he says about his enemies.

Seems everybody has a "I woulda did..." Story if Will had slapped them, but no one knows for sure until in the moment. Overall funny, but took about 20 minutes to get there.

Marlon Wayans did a better Chris Rock stand-up show than Chris Rock did.
Top_Dawg_Critic11 March 2023
I just saw both specials and Marlon Wayans just nailed it in the entire 1 hour show. Maybe Chris Rock should've watched this Marlon Wayans stand-up before doing his special because he just got schooled. Every bit of Wayans' stand up was laugh out loud hilarious, we even had to rewind a bunch of times to re-laugh out loud yelling "oh no he di-int". Sure, maybe he focused on the same issue throughout the entire show, but I'd rather hear that, done much better, than a bunch of nonsense Rock gave us, and only touching on 'the slap' in his last 5 minutes, of which wasn't even near as funny as Wayans. This was comedy gold and probably the most constant laughing I've done watching a stand-up special. A well deserved 9/10 from me.

This is how you do it!

I don't understand where all the hate is coming for this special. This was brilliant. Yes on the surface, haters gonna say it was only about the slap, but it was so much more. First it was actually LOL hilarious every damn minute, and give a very good take away about not being envious and trying to be your best you despite what you think is fair, cause sooner or later you'll realize you're in the best spot you should be.

On the other side, what Chris did in his special was a few chuckles and not address the issue in an appropriate way. Because it wasn't just about the black folks, it was a subject that he could've made a big deal of. About people being so offended about everything, and actually meaning something to balance out between keeping in check wrong doers, without harassing people that didn't deserve it. Anyways that ship had sailed.

Stand up should be funny and should say something, Chris's wasn't funny and while did try to say something, Marlon's special just killed it. Definitely worth the watch!

It didn't even happen to you dude!!

OMG... An entire show about the Will Smith vs. Chris Rock slap just isn't funny!

What a waste of talent, his last special was so good, energetic, funny and brutally honest, I was just expecting so much more. It feels like one joke that gets spun out so thin, it's bound to fall apart. For me that happened about 10 minutes in. Maybe the energy of his preparation for the Richard Pryor biopic was channeled in his previous special and I just expected too much. We'll have to wait for his next special to get the answer...

Although Will Smith gave us some great entertainment, he's doesn't deserve an hour long redemption special, because he couldn't take a joke about his bald wife being a great cast for the next GI Jane movie!

Marlon is still a great guy with tons of energy. That's why I still gave it a D minus/4 stars review, but as a fan of stand up comedy my advice is to skip this set!!

So many haters
chrisbaker199114 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I thought it was odd that he talked about Chris Rock the whole time but it was funny from beginning to end. It was funny enough that I'm definitely going to watch it again and recommend it to my friends. It's gotta take a ton of time to make 50-something minutes of jokes that all hit on one topic. He hit. It from every angle. I just watched Chris Rock's special right before this and it was still hilarious. This was also one of the most energetic comedies I've ever seen. He ran all over the stage knocking over the mic stand and the stool multiple times. And whoever built that microphone needs a raise. I have no idea how it survived.

Will Smith's autobiography(!)
Go_For_The_Jugular6 March 2023
I love Marlon Wayans, he's great in TV shows, he's OK in films, but he is AWFUL in stand-up!

I didn't laugh once during this, but I'd laugh every 30 seconds if I was watching an episode of 'The Wayans Bros'.

My God, couldn't he write any material? This was all about Will Smith...and that infamous Oscars incident. It dragged on for way too long. He spent way too much of the set on Will Smith. We're over it now. To be honest, I'd forgotten about the slap, until Marlon mentioned it.

I wish he'd spent a few minutes on Will and then moved on. I would of preferred to hear more about his family, growing up with so many siblings etc.

It just wasn't funny. It was more like an interview on a talk show, where Marlon told anecdotes, than an actual stand-up routine.

Stick to wacky, over-the-top roles in movies and TV shows. That's where you excel.

Look up Marlon, say cheese!

MARLON performed exactly as the info described the cut!
kathi4rd-60497 March 2023
Did you people not read the info before watching his performance?

Even in his interviews beforehand, he specifically said he would talk about his three friends lives in correlation to his!

He actually said the reason why he's doing a set about it, is because a comedians theme has to come from somewhere personal, and he said it was personal to him because he has a close relationship with all three of them, Chris, Will and Jada... and he was hurt when he saw "the slap" happen.

Everything he said was laid out in order and ended with the perfect moral to his story. Next time you watch a movie or read a book, please check out the info before-hand and don't diss someone's artwork when you don't even realize what it is about.

Pure genius
b4blue9 March 2023
This is a standup unlike anything you have ever seen before. It's actually a documentary about a specific event that happened involving three people, their back stories, reactions from white and black audience with in-depth cultural explanations, historical references that put things into perspective, alternate storylines from multiverse, different variations of reenactments with different ratios of truth:joke, relationship advices, impressions of people that were not involved but somehow help portray mindset of people that were, following the lines of stupid and shallow desires to come to realisation of true desires and needs... all done with just a spoken word with a lot of subjective, introspective and very personal inputs from Marlon Wayans.

All about who.....?
rnblee15 March 2023
This was disappointing... the entire 59 min special is about one event, one issue, one moment that is NOT about Marlon.

After 20 minutes of the same joke, it felt about time to move onto a second topic, another event, another laughable moment. But, like farmer Jack with Daisy his prized cow, the joke is milked until every last drop is out. Even though you might've been tired of milk (the joke) after 20 minutes, here comes some more.

Admittedly, there are some laughable moments. A few funny events/scenarios, a few expressions that make the special watchable. But, it needs more variety!

References to legacy Waynes shows are always welcomed, but at moments it felt like the references were aimed at creating a platform for guaranteed applause, adulation or appreciation.

Marlon is a great comedian, great expressionist, great at generating moments to smile and reflect, but... how shine was a little low here, and hidden behind stories of someone else's trauma. But...... have a look and decide for yourself.

Wow, this special is funny and unique, you will not be disappointed.
springeraldmeza12 March 2023
I watched this special with the expectation it will be like all his other specials, a bit bland and lackluster.

Well, my expectations were not met. Marlon delivers a tasteful and hilarious twist to slapgate. Compared to Chris Rocks' special, Marlons takes you on a fun ride into the worlds of all three people involved (Will, Jada, and Chris). Do not be mistaken that this special is all about Marlon throwing a few jokes together for a few laughs, no Marlon is immersed indirectly in the lives of all three individuals.

It's one hour of pure comedy, don't overthink it, The Oscar slap is the talk of the town, a moment in history that will live forever in Oscar Award History. So why not enjoy it now while we still can? Everyone else is doing it, so laugh about it now so you don't have to cry about it later.

You wish you got slapped!!?
angiesmail19 March 2023
Marlon was quick to come up with the most basic material around the infamous slap of Will Smith and Chris Rock. Seems desperate to go on and on for so long with something that had NOTHING to do with him! This should have been a 5 minute joke. He stretched this joke for what seemed like half of the time he was on stage! I am a fan of Marlon's movies and the reruns of the Wayans Brothers show!! However, he is NOT a good standup! I can't recommend this standup special! I will go see his next movie though!

This was THE FUNNIEST comedy special Marlon Wayans has EVER DONE!
niasadero7 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Let me first state that I'm an African-American & as funny as this special was...I find it very hard to believe that these negative reviewers are Black!

I agree with another reviewer here about the fact that the people giving this special negative reviews, OBVIOUSLY did NOT read the info about the content BEFORE watching...but had the NERVE to get on here giving him bad reviews! Such poor taste and bad form!

If you bother to READ it FIRST, the special's info section TELLS you what to expect beforehand, that the WHOLE special centers around his deep dive into Will Smith Oscar's slap of Chris Rock! Reading is fundamental people!

Wayans was witty, gut-bustingly funny & poignant, as he poked fun at ALL 3 of HIS FRIENDS...AND tied it back to himself, how he felt about the incident, PLUS how he felt about THEM from both a humerous & serious perspective, while simultaneously intertwining great nuggets of wisdom...IF the viewer wasn't too critical to miss them entirely. He was HILARIOUS, PERIOD! Bravo Mr. Wayans!

I fully support this stand up!
UniqueParticle24 March 2023
I love Marlon Waynes and the subject matter is perfectly bold I'm one of the few that is glad Chris Rock got slapped he deserved that last year I'm glad he's getting bashed! So much great stories mashed in and cinema stories so enjoyable whist being bold. God Loves Me is focused mainly on the infamous slap a lot of it which I'm oddly fine with it all most aren't ok with this I think its genius! Unapologetic fun entertainment and so much energy at 50 years old It's quite impressive how wild this is Marlon uses the resources around him so damn well this stand up brilliant I hardly watch stand up this to me was worth it!

Really, do not waist your time. Not what fans deserve.
neromancer6 March 2023
UPDATE 03/10/2023 I agree reading the content would be good but I purposely watched this blindly so I do get a non bias perspective. I have enjoyed him over the years so there was no reason to read or watch beforehand. The same can be said for other comedians. There is bit of expectation from the viewer already to the quality of any standup routine if the viewer is has been watching the comedians work. If Marlon Wayans can spend almost the entire set on one subject why cannot Chris Rock spend 10 min? Why is Chris Rock getting negative press on his most recent special on this subject only? Marlon Wayans literally verbally bashed Chris Rock. Alls fair in comedy right? Marlon Wayans does have a right to talk about anything he wants but for those viewer who did not read any review or watch any interviews they can be assured that there will be some disappointment.

ORIGINAL: I watched this form start to finish and I really wanted to stop it a few times as I could not get though it. I spent more time asking myself why he would dedicate the entire standup set to one specific incident that many want to forget. If a person never saw/knew of the incident then this entire routine would sit on deaf ears. I guess it was a gamble to assume that his regular audience would relate to his biases. I think Marlon Wayans is hilarious at times but I think he must have an alternative motive that only he knows as to why he dwells so much on this one incident. Could it be guilt? Hate? Obligation? I was very disappointed at the content and it really was not to the level of funny he usually is in his past years. I do not feel he is going down a different path but it really seemed he went really hard on Chris Rock too much. And he overdid praising Will Smith constantly. For those that are fans I am afraid you have a high chance of being duped with this show. If you are more prone to pop culture happenings then you probably will not be upset with him. Especially if you are on the side of Will Smith. The incident has been talked about in countless interviews and other comedians/celebrities have chimed in already. For Marlon Wayons to devote an entire standup special to it is puzzling. That topic is so old and I think the majority if not all have moved on and want to laugh at fresh and new content.

Started funny as hell but got weak towards end.
charliecapo11 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Started funny but got a little weak towards the end. If it wasn't for the slap....... he may not have had the material for this special. Some parts are funny as hell but others fall flat... he makes an attempt to be as funny as both Rock And Smith by using them as the catalysts for his jokes but never reached the level he needed too. And as with most comedians today, he had to have his set rely on disparaging a different Race in-order to gain the support of the audience for some jokes to succeed. However, It is commendable that he had the confidence to tell the jokes that he did without worrying about today's cancel Culture and go after two heavy weights that have the ability to bury him in a joke battle. So if you have free time and can't decide what to watch... give it a watch.

A 2 min joke stretched into 60 min of non funny jokes.
apena81-314-82863817 March 2023
I'm a big fan of stand up comedy. I go to see them live and love the craft. I watched this special with no expectation and I did not laugh once! I like Marlon Wayans. I like his movies and shows. Maybe I did expect more as I like him in other things but this was not funny. The audience was laughing hard and i'm sitting there wondering what are they finding funny. I couldn't believe it. That means Marlon went to multiple live stand up to work on his material and after many days this was the best that came out. It's 60 mins of jokes regarding what happened between Chris Rock and Will Smith. There's history and in-depth stories of Jada, Chris and Will but it's not funny. Not at all! And I'm not hating. I would not write a review to hate on Marlon for the sake of not liking him. I have this hope that he sees that he could have done better and takes more time to work on his stand up.

Such a wannabe
complexcasandra4 September 2023
Maybe there's something about the name Marlin that guarantees mediocrity. Marlin Jackson never tried to go solo and compete with Michael, but Marlin Wayans just went right ahead and botched a stand up special that answers a question nobody was asking. "How did you feel about Will slapping Chris. I mean, WTH? Your life is so barren that you need to talk about real celebrities for the clicks and views? Lame. This guy is the most phony, hollow stand up I've ever seen. Most of what he says sounds untrue and the rest is....well also sounds false. This guy doesn't have a genuine moment during this show, very long show. )it'd be a crime to call this a special) It was like malicious name-dropping without a point.
