Any young adult approaching their eighteenth birthday is going to be offended by being addressed by one's parents as "Kiddo." But that is only the start of the bizarre predicament of young Rose, who is to painfully learn the secrets of her family heritage.
Rose was adopted and was brought up by two loving parents, Zara and Max. But, suddenly, the high school "guidance counselor" named Hayley has led Rose to believe that she is her birth mother.
A preposterous tenet of the film is that somehow the school principal had hired Hayley and gave her tacit permission to reconnect with her daughter on school time! The principal even knew that Hayley had an alias (Rachel Jones) and a criminal record! Typically, in adoptions, there is a strict legal agreement that, after surrendering the child, the birth parent is not to approach them under any circumstances.
There were moments in the film that raised genuine questions about why a young person would be obsessed to locate their birth parents when they have been raised and adored by such caring adoptive parents as Zara and Max. But young Rose, who aspires to be a major in molecular biology, is so eager to connect with Hayley even prior to receiving the DNA results that she decides to have "mocktails" with her and accept a key to her lavish home!
True to form in a Lifetime picture, the male will come up the big loser in the parenting game. The film's denouement could serve as a requiem for Max, with the three women having completely forgotten any role he might have played in their lives as a lover, husband, and father. They now have each other and have no need in their lives for a man.
Sad.
