More horror than comedy.

Lee wakes up inside a coffin, with no recollection of how he got there, he gets a call from the stag and party,

Well I was not expecting that! Literally like no other episode. I enjoyed it somewhat, though it isn't a favourite, definitely not for everyone, but credit to Mack and co for doing something different. Buried is a favourite horror thriller of mine, imagine Not going out remaking that film.

A few funny one liners, but there is definitely more than a horror vibe to it, it actually puts you on edge, and leaves you feeling somewhat breathless.

Great to see Jonny Dixon, who plays Andy, I've always been a fan of his brand of humour.

Ok, so why is Lee friendly with Andy and his mates, I find it hard to picture him being mates with those guys.

'Costa Coffins' that has to be one of the best one liners ever on the show.

Mixed bag, but just about tips the scales towards the positive side.

6/10.

This is what you call a bottle episode, in this case a coffin episode. Lee finds himself boxed in while out on a stag night.

Sick and tired of been called Grandad by the other revellers. He throws a drunken challenge that he could be nailed inside a coffin for an hour.

Only when Lee wakes up, he has no idea how he got here. Lucy constantly calls him.

Only when the fellow partygoer's from the stag do go to free Lee. The coffin has disappeared.

Lee finds himself on the verge of getting buried alive.

Well the episode was certainly a bit different. Also a bit cheap with everyone appearing on videophone at some point.

I did find myself laughing a few times. I was not sure what Lee was doing at this stag party, they were an obnoxious bunch.

On reflection that certainly had a dark comedy vibe.

Not For Everyone

I can definitely see why people won't like this one as it has a claustrophobic feeling. The subject matter isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. It's very much like the film "Buried" which is mentioned in this episode too.

His friends are the absolute worst but Lee did absolutely everything he could with this format and I think he did it well. Managing to put in some clever and funny lines without losing the tension that the situation brought.

You find yourself in there with Lee trying to decipher exactly where he is and how he got there. Uncovering the puzzle piece by piece from his phone calls. Clever.

When you are nearly up to 100 episodes I suppose you are very much within your right to try different things, and 'Not Going Out' attempts this here.

I'm not a massive fan of black comedy, so I don't think this was ever going to be my sort of episode from the off, based on the premise alone, but it's decent enough stuff, and at least it's not all focused on Lee Mack, we do see Sally Bretton's Lucy at different points.

Even a not so great episode of 'Not Going Out' is still a darn sight better than much of what passes for entertainment on the BBC or on UK telly currently though.

Overall, fine enough.

The Ultimate Bottle Episode
klaxoncow6 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Due to the subject matter and the claustrophobia of the situation, this episode won't be for everyone.

But this is perhaps the ultimate "bottle episode" ever made for any TV show. The entire episode - save a few seconds at the end - occurs inside a coffin.

It is hilariously funny. But it requires that your sense of humour can handle laughing at such black humour. No-one dies but, of course, it's a coffin, so if you're uncomfortable with death, it's a constant reminder that you can't escape.

The technical and writing challenge is impressive, and it rises to that challenge, as it doesn't get stale or boring. The episode is over faster than you realise.

This takes "bottle episode" to its ultimate conclusion. You can't get any more "bottle" than the inside of a coffin.

Freaked me out!

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this and as soon as the light came on and he was in a coffin, I turned away. First time I have never actively watched an episode of this show, i listened instead.

Lee is in a coffin on a stag night. I've seen that somewhere before and yes, a Peter James book, Dead Simple - and that stage show freaked me out also. The stag party, I wouldnt have p*ss** on even if they were on fire, let alone trust them with a prank like that.

Ridiculous and stupid episode. I was awaiting for the part where, always in TV shows, he cant call the police as he has no phone signal and was glad when it was over. This who are claustrophobic.
