Simply one of the greatest if not the greatest episode of the series
ao6611 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
FULL IN-DEPTH REVIEW HERE: http://www.ign.com/blogs/ao66 He's back!!!!! All of the episodes this year have been excellent, but nothing else comes close to "Internment". This was simply one of the greatest if not the greatest episode of the entire SERIES, let alone this season. Tense action, the near-deaths of major characters, and character-defining moments made this episode truly special. Television really doesn't get much better than this.

From the first shot of the episode it was easy to see that this would be some deep material. Rick's thoughtful drive had a lot to ponder. Then we were plunged right into the struggles of Hershel, Sasha, Glenn, and the rest of the sick. Thus the table was set for the major character of the episode: Hershel. This week was truly his finest hour, even before the chaos erupted (don't worry, I'll get to that later). They did a fantastic job of immediately showing the horrific state of those in the cell block. It doesn't get much worse that having to pump over and over again to keep someone alive (though it did get worse). Despite the circumstances, Hershel did all he could to keep hope. However, he wasn't just preaching to others that they needed to keep hope despite being sick. When things got tough for Hershel and he almost lost everything, including his own life, he didn't lose hope. More importantly, he didn't lose faith in what he believes, as evidenced by his reading of the Bible towards the end of the episode. The very relevant and well-written quote about hopelessness being worse than sickness was something Hershel really took to heart. There were just so many phenomenal scenes with Hershel: rolling out the dead and killing them out of sight, his conflict of views with the doctor, and so on. There isn't a character on the show more understanding than Hershel. He knew seeing Glenn would crush Maggie, so he made sure he didn't see her. While he would be the "hero" later on, I thought his most telling character moment was when he saved Sasha. Carol would have killed her right then and there, but Hershel isn't like that. He absolutely refused to give up on her, and as a result, she lived. Sasha said it herself: what Hershel did is what many would define as "stupid", and he did tons of "stupid" things in this episode. But if stupid is risking your own life to save others, then I certainly think Hershel wouldn't mind being labeled as such. Words really don't do Scott Wilson's performance justice. A showing like that is what wins people awards. While those around him made sure they weren't completely overshadowed (Steven Yeun, Sonequa Martin-Green), he gave the standout performance of the season so far for ANY actor. It wasn't just him that made this "Hershel episode" so special, it was the writing. The writing was superb throughout, and honestly it was the best all season, which is really saying something considering I have said this is the most well-written season thus far. Every single line was not only pertinent, but deep and meaningful. Before the first shot was even fired this was shaping up to be the season's best episode.......continued at http://www.ign.com/blogs/ao66

This episode feels surreal
karimbelkayed13 June 2020
I'm currently watching this show's episode back to back as it is my favorite show of all time. Watching this episode especially feels surreal since if you already watched this then you know it's about Herchel. The way the character is portrayed makes him one of the best characters in this show and this episode was a further exploration of Herchel's character as a sympathetic and hopeful guy who kept everyone's mental health on check, i'm sure without him being around, the group wouldn't even last this long. So i looked on the man who played Herchel only to find out he's already dead (in real life not the show since i didn't watch the latter episodes) and it made me sad tbh. All i can say is R.I.P Scott Wilson.. i'm sure you were a great guy.

Action-Packed Episode!
g-bodyl28 January 2015
This is the fifth episode of the fourth season of the Walking Dead. It is the most action-packed episode of the season so far and we really get to see things at the prison become worse, especially that lethal virus. As the situation is quickly getting out of hand at the prison, we get the return of another potent threat to the prison: The Governor himself.

In this episode, "Internment," The virus is quickly killing those who have it and turning them into walkers. Herschel is struggling mightily and it's up to Maggie to save him and the remaining survivors. Meanwhile, Rick and Carl try to take out the walkers as they overrun the prison fence.

Overall, this is the best episode of the season. It is heavy on the action, but it does not sacrifice any of characterization. Scott Wilson shines as Herschel, as we see him at his worst. With the Governor back in the picture, it will be interesting to see what happens next. I rate this episode 10/10.

Warning: Spoilers
This has to be one of the greatest Walking Dead episode ever. This season keeps delivering awesomeness. Now that we have Carl gone(very sad) and Glen being the worst state as possible wow my heart was pumping. The zombie flu can now be cured now but death awaits for those who didn't make it in time. I love how Rick and Carl get their connection shooting some zombies down. Hershel on the edge willing to save anyone as possible while grabbing a shotgun mowing zombies one by one. On Glen's part it was a really tough to see him almost die making me cringe watching the blood flow out of his mouth. But the ending is what made go UH OH!! Someone we know is back!

This was really tense!

After a decent start to season four, we finally gets out first tense, thrilling and actionpacked episode thst brings us back to good episodes of the previous seasons!

The episode plays out very well as things slowly spiral out of control and the prison descends into chaos! The walkers really feels like a threat in this episode and you really were on the edge to see how they would make it out of this!

Hershel gets a lot of love and I was very invested in his character! Seeing him put his own life on the line for others in a desperate situation!

The episode was brutal as well with some disturbing scenes! You really did not know who would make it or not!

This was the show doing what It does best!

Finally a Captivating score
sharpcourse21 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This episode succeeds in delivering a critical element which I thought has been missing in the entire series on a large scale. There have been some great writing in the series prior but nothing does justice to scenes; moody or otherwise like a good score. One might fail to notice some memorable scenes in season one of this series due to lack of a score that draws you in. This has to be one of the very best episodes in the entire show for this reason and...

Oh God bless Hershel. Internment means a group of people confined in a place in periods of crisis. But the interned individual for this episode has to be Hershel. True character defining moment, one that creates grounds between hopeful or deliberate, foolish & stupid or smart & cautious decisions. He does come out tops while displaying true faith & hope. We also have a very well placed score to make his moments more captivating. We could have lost Glenn, we could have lost Sasha....

And the Zombies have broken in while we have a limited amount of man power but thank God for ammo. In one of the more beautifully shot action sequences I have even seen, we have the Grimes face off against a yard full of zombies. If you have ever not known how to use a Mack-4, you should get some tips from this. The score for this sequence is well made as well.

A nerve racking episode & then we have the Governor. A huge setup for events to come.

Excellent episode
snoozejonc30 November 2021
The flu virus and zombie crisis at the prison gets worse.

For me this is the strongest episode of series 4 so far.

It is a great Herschel episode as he cares for the sick and dying patients isolated from the general population. It is a brilliant depiction of a character with the utmost dedication to looking after all people and is set in a real oppressive, high pressured and dangerous environment. Maggie also has some impressive scenes. Both Scott Wilson and Lauren Cohan are awesome throughout this episode, particularly Wilson.

As a sub plot we see Rick return from his road trip and deal with a siege of walkers on the prison fence. Overall the story moves between the two situations wonderfully well and unfolds in a very compelling and suspenseful way.

Herschel is portrayed as having virtually the polar opposite outlook as Carol. Both of these characters define strength in different ways and the writers depict Herschel as a tower of strength in an almost hopeless situation.

Technically it's wonderfully made, with cinematography, lighting, visual effects, sound effects, music and editing that all works for the pace and mood of the situation.

For me it would have been perfect if the writers had given a bit more plausible urgency getting Rick to deal with fence situation quicker, but they didn't.

It somehow feels very relevant since going through a global pandemic.

Best episode so far

Warning: Spoilers
This has got to be the greatest episode of the walking dead ever. After Carols departure from the group, i kinda wanted to see Daryls reaction but since him and his group don't arrive till later. that does not happen. Instead, all hell breaks loose on two fronts. First, the quarantine cell block run by the somehow healthy Hershel is getting worse. Dr. S and Sasha are on the verge of death. This was kinda sad for me as i really liked Sasha. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, Glenn starts choking on his own blood and Hershel is caught up in a deadly battle between the walkers. This scene has your knuckles clenched the entire time hoping that one of the series most beloved characters wont die. Meanwhile, Rick and Carl are reinforcing the fences when the walkers break through the fence. All of a sudden in an epic battle between the Grimes' and 50 or so walkers, Rick and Carl mow them down within a couple minutes creating one of the most memorable scenes in The Walking Dead. Great Episode 10/10

The nail-biting intern
TheLittleSongbird27 August 2018
Had heard nothing but great things about 'The Walking Dead' from friends and IMDb reviewers. It took a while to get round to watching, both from being busy and also not being sure whether it would be my cup of tea. Finally getting round to it a few years ago and slowly working my way through it, having had a very long to watch and review list, 'The Walking Dead' turned out to be very much my cup of tea and as good as the hype made it out to be, have found it extremely addictive.

All the previous Season 4 episodes were for me very good to great. "Internment" is the best up to this point of the season and one of Season 4's very best, a return to the tense, action-packed and gutsy kind of episode instead of the quieter action-light kind of episode. It is yet again a strong reminder of how Seasons 1-5 of 'The Walking Dead' to me were absolutely brilliant and seeing the show in its full glory days (Season 6 was uneven, Season 7 was a huge disappointment and am still debating whether to watch Season 8). It is as emotional, complex and as tense as one would expect, at the same time it has adrenaline and guts.

It still shocks me at how an intelligent, well-made (so much so that it is easy to mistake it for a film) show about zombies could be made when so many films have tried and failed abysmally to do so.

Like all the episodes of the show, "Intermship" is incredibly well made in the production values, with gritty and audacious production design, photography of almost cinematic quality, effects that look good, have soul and are not overused or abused and pretty frightening make-up. The music is haunting and affecting, having presence but never being too intrusive.

The writing is intelligent and thought-provoking, not as talky as some of the previous episodes, with lots of tension and emotional resonance and shows signs of character complexity and multiple layer storytelling. The more eventful parts are thrilling and terrifying as well as uncompromising, lots of adrenaline and guts.

Appreciated the ever strong and still progressing story, where a lot happens and full of different strands without being confused or over-stuffed, and character building, which the episode has a bigger emphasis on, and that the pace is rarely dull or rushed, with a taut intensity in the more tense parts. The character writing and the character interactions are what is particularly great here, Herschel is especially well done.

Everything is nicely paced without rushing through the more important parts, much of it being very taut. The world building is already stunningly immersive and effective. Direction is smart and atmospheric while the show throughout has been strongly acted. Scott Wilson is particularly fantastic.

Overall, brilliantly nail-biting and a Season 4 highlight. 10/10 Bethany Cox

This episode brings back the loved series emotion
urmas-kungla11 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
First 4 episodes caught me a feeling that the series will slowly die off (like many people in the series actually do) but then it started speeding up again and finally bringing my sleepy eyes wide open with emotions going through my mind like enormous waves.

If you think of leaving the series- don't! The fourth episode will wake you up again.

It's that part that reminds you how unforgiving mistakes can be living in post-apocalypse world, how you should perish every single good moment in your life and how everything that will happen to you may not be in your own hands.

I've added a spoiler tag as this episode must be an unexpected event for you!

This episode is the best of the season 4 so far. P.S. For me.
XueHuaBingYu12 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode 5 has a lot of fun for me. Mainly because of the fact that Rick and his people are surrounded by a lot of zombies, both outside and inside. Outside is the usual. Zombies keep coming to the fences and trying to get pass through it. This is so usual. What it's not is the inside. Inside the prison, people keep dying because of the cold and every time they died, they always die and hence, inside zombies. Inside the prison, cell block A is full of sick people, so, there's no one beside Hershell. And Hershell's condition isn't that much good for shooting guns. So, when they have to face with those zombies, they are indeed outnumbered. How they get out of it is what it gets me so interesting and exciting.

I love that scene where that little girl lured that zombie (which recently turned) away from Glenn. If it wasn't for her, Glenn would've been bitten. Glenn is alive because of her. He should've thanked her specially. That's when I was starting to love her.

The last scene is really interesting. That damned governor guy is reappearing. I really want to see what kind of bad things he would do next. Although I already knew that he's going to do bad things, I still want to see it. I hope I wouldn't regret it.

All in all, this episode can be said the best of the season 4 so far. I really want to see what happens next. I really want to see Glenn survives all of that. So, I'm going to keep the next and next episodes to know what's gonna happen.

The walking dread
Josh_The_Third12 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a bit ambivalent about this one. Action-wise, it was very intense. But, I must say that I wasn't happy to see the entire episode being focused on Hershel. It felt weird to see him take center stage - unlike Rick, Hershel's actor doesn't have the charisma needed to carry all 40 minutes by himself. This can also be said about Maggie, who I think had 3 lines so far this season and suddenly returns, feeling out of place.

I'm not saying this episode is bad but I think the writers wanted it to be 100% drama, 0% plot, and in that sense, they got what they wanted. It's the most dreadful-feeling episode since season one.

Since there wasn't much plot to it, there is little I can add. However, the return of the governor is an interesting change. Since the previous season wasn't good, I am a bit nervous about this direction and really hope the guys are gonna take him out this time. I don't want to see this plot line getting dragged and abused again!

Dull, dreary, taking itself way too seriously.
alsation7216 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This virus and the group randomly getting sick and zombifying ... um k. Why?

Obviously the governor is hanging around sabotaging things; um k.

When they found out that someone had been feeding the zombies at a specific point in the fence, wouldn't logic dictate that you'd put more of an effort into surveillance to find the culprit?

Instead, they allow a huge amount of the zombies to amass at one point of the fence without trying to dissipate them along the length of the fence more evenly or kill them or fortify that small portion of fence.

And this group survived this long how exactly?

The fluey virus they are all coming down with is a boring twist. What happened to the governor and his aquariums full of heads? Was that just for his entertainment?

Remember in a previous episode the woman trying to keep her zombie partner alive, she said he was "slowing down". Shouldn't they all be slowing down about now? How is a rat now and then keeping that huge group at the fence alive for so long?

Also, there seems to be this over-abundance of gas / petrol for the cars. Petrol has a relatively short shelf life.

Finally the most important question of all ... do zombies ever take a damned dump?

Zzzz watching it in hope.

Great suspense! Very good action, Hershel rocks my German heart:-]

Warning: Spoilers
This is a really good action episode indeed! I like these battle scene shooting scene with Carl and Rick.

It is a good decision to keep Glen and Sasha!

The end scene is like a announcement of the future development, almost in the tradition of Hitchkock. The Zombies are very well shown with a bit of splatter scenes, but not to much. This episode is a containing action we love!

Final thoughts: Hershel: A Glen: A Maggie: A Carl: A Sasha: A minor roles: B. I would be surprised if we can see another epic episode like the very first from season 1.

Please more episodes exactly like that! To me it feels like a 20 min episode and this is a good sign!

Clearing the place
maxpenguin9 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
An episode this good deserves more than an 8.7 rating. First of all, this was a smart way to clear out the prison. Most of the sick people exited the show in a exciting way. Each had a scene for death. You could see the focus on attention to Glenn more than others. All the background extras were shown dead or reanimated. There were walkers everywhere and loose people and sick people, people dying. It was just a lot of action. And then, when you add the Carl and rick shooting seen, it gave us the season finale feeling. This is my all time favorite episode.

A Promising Beginning for the Next Episode
claudio_carvalho12 November 2013
Hershel fights to keep the outbreak under control, relieving the pain of the sick patients and killing those that transform into walkers far from the survivors. Rick returns without Carol and tells Maggie what happened to her. When the large number of walkers knocks down the fence, Rick calls Carl and they shot on them. Meanwhile in the block, several patients transform into walkers and Maggie goes to help her father.

"Internment" is an episode where Hershel steals the show and a promising beginning for the next episode. Rick will have to tell Daryl what he did with Carol and the Governor is back; therefore great elements for the next show. Why Rick had to wait for the walkers knock down the fence to start shooting? My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "Internment"

A Sad Soul
jackwhiteyo11 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
By far the best episode of the season. One of the best episodes of the whole series and the scariest episode since the Pilot of this show! This episode had my face constantly cowering in fear behind my hands, not because of the walkers, but because of the possible and almost certain looking, deathly outcome for our main characters. Usually when a character gets a lot of screen time in an episode, they die. Which is why I was so certain Hershel was going to bite the dust. I'm glad to see Glenn still alive and I guess it couldn't hurt to still have Sasha.....for Tyreese!

The flu has temporarily been taken care of, and so now we need to make room for another story arch. The beginning of something that made this episode as scream worthy as it was.

The Governor is back...

I'm so excited as I thought he was a great character and was excellently portrayed by David Morrisey. The biggest cliffhanger the show has left me on!

Best episode of the season! (so far)
mm-3911 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Internment asks the question should Rick have kicked the nurse of death, Carol, out? Well the zombie flu did hit the prison hard. The sick should have been locked up. Some did survive. I believe Rick made the right decision. No one would have trusted the nurse, and there would have been some bad payback/revenge in the camp. Now Daryl (who cares for the nurse) and Rick will have problems! I wonder about the show! The Zombies over ran the fence and were all killed. Why did they just not shoot the zombies earlier is a good question? They were probably trying to conserve their ammo. What makes Internment interesting is we see The Governor probing and doing reconnaissance of the prison. The viewer knows The Governor wants payback/revenge on Rick. I give Internment an eight out of ten. Rick will have his hands full in the next couple of episodes.

2 more capable than Army in FTWD
fighterd-629878 October 2022
Hershel fights to keep the outbreak under control, tending to the sick patients and killing those who transform into walkers, first luring them away from the survivors. Rick returns without Carol and tells Maggie what happened to her. When a large number of walkers knock down the fence, Rick and Carl shoot them with automatic weapons. Meanwhile, in the cell block, several patients transform into walkers and Maggie goes to help her father from them and also save Glenn.

I love how in this episode 2 guys, a man and a kid with a rifle, are capable to kill so many walkers than the Military in the first season of Fear the Walking Dead at the hospital. Because in FTWD they didn't even HIT the walkers with heavy MGs.

Intense Episode
slightlymad221 February 2015
Plot in a Paragraph: Hershel (Scott Wilson) fights to keep the outbreak under control, tending to the sick patients and killing those who transform into walkers. Rick (Andrew Lincoln) returns without Carol and tells Maggie (Lauren Cohen) what happened to her. Meanwhile, in the cell block, several patients turn into walkers and Maggie goes to help her father from them and also save Glenn (Steven Yeun) and we see someone is watching the prison.

Father and son bond as Rick accepts how it is, and he and Carl go on a shooting spree. Killing a ton of invading Walkers. I'm surprised Maggie accepted Rick saying what he done to Carol, I doubt Daryl will be so understanding.

Speaking of Daryl, Norman Reedus isn't given much to do this episode, Scott Wilson is great as Hershel, and I'm starting to fear for Glenn (Steven Yeun)

sickness with some chances of twists
seshasai-tris11 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Internment = The confinement of large amount of people with no reason

I've been writing reviews to this series very often. After 4 episodes, the script writers decide to pace up and also add some twists by adding some exciting characters.

Just when I felt the sickness is so sick and the strategies of Rick and Hershel are about to faint, Dixon and his team contribute to the group. This episode also increases the intensity of bond between Rick and Carl and the way they work. One loop-hole is, why the crew of the prison have not given enough attention to the bunch of walkers falling on the prison gates.! They could have well cleared the herd before hand, but for no reason pile up the walkers, making it difficult for themselves at the end

The name of the episode does justice to what it means. And unlike the previous four episodes that focused in developing an intense environment for the upcoming episodes, this episode bursts open with lots of action and some unfinished stories are out there.

The next episode is gonna be one hell of a ride.

"I think we should make some new rules before they get back. I hereby declare we have spaghetti Tuesdays, every Wednesday. First we have to find some spaghetti" -Hershel Greene. One of the most overrated episodes of TWD. The only good thing about this episode is Hershel's in it a lot. The prison plot sucked and it finally came to an end. The worst thing about this episode is that the other episodes of this season still suck but at least 1 side thing happens that's interesting. Not in this one though. They didn't even kill Sasha when she passed out. They couldn't even make zombified Henry kill Lizzie. We already saw the prison being overrun by people dying from the sickness and coming back as walkers in the second episode, and it wasn't any better. That one walker shouldn't have been able to pull Rick to the ground with just their arm. Seeing The Governor at the end watching the prison was really cool.

A Dirge from Unprepared People
anthony_retford12 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I have read most of the reviews here stating that this is one of the best episodes yet. But I beg to disagree. I did not want my time taken up with two weeks of sickness and under lit scenes. I would have devoted half an episode to the sickness and got on with the story.

I knew the Governor would show up. These survivors show they are really unprepared for things that happen, from the fence giving way, to the not locking the cell doors, to the Governor appearing. What, did they just forget about the Governor?

They really seem to be hapless in their approach to things at the prison. They react to things. They do not anticipate things. Their utmost safety is their biggest concern yet they ignore obvious problems.
