The build doesn't match the payoff and Millie is much more natural than Gray

Cats do the strangest things and we join Tibs and her owner in small clips from their days which begin with the cat returning with a dead mouse. The next day sees her starting the day with a dead crow and from there it only appears to be going one way. This short film interested me because I have found that owning two cats is a very quick way to overcome being squeamish about dead things and it only took a short time for me to have quite the list of animals which I have had to recover from the yard and put in the bin. This short film plays on this aspect of cat ownership.

Through the short there is a delicate rather comic air to the film and the step up in creatures from mouse to crow suggests that it will continue. It does of course but for some reason we quickly change from the delicate touch to one of horror. As an idea I am find with this as the jarring change may have worked as dark comedy, but it is not particularly well done and the sudden ending without anything specific (only implied) is a problem. It is a problem that isn't helped by how unnatural Gray comes across. In essence she is a good old cat lady but on the other side her dialogue feels stilted and "acted" in a way that stands out on the camera. Millie (the cat – in what I believe is her first role) is actually much better, puddling the floor in a natural way and I very much liked the film using her purr as a heavy part of the soundtrack.

It doesn't work though, which is a shame. The buildup doesn't match the delivery and anyway the delivery isn't particularly good as it doesn't do enough – delivering the obvious "punchline" but in a way that feels weird and actually says nothing. Good for 2 minutes of Millie, but otherwise disappointing.
