Black Widower (#7.1)

Warning: Spoilers
The first episode of the season was slightly disappointing, but maybe because I had such high expectation after the previous episode. Still it might get a bit better.

The poor Chinese guy. Gemma picking him was pretty sad, I could not watch the scene of him being tortured and killed. What will Jax do now when he finds out the truth? And I hope he will. It is actually very surprising that he never once suspected Gemma. She seems like the only one who would have a reasonable motive and who one would expect it from.

I feel Juice's days are numbered. He won't go away again. Well at least it is the final season and if I get to lose another one of my favorite characters it will be soon before it is all over. Still, interesting what he will do with Wayne?

Way too long and violent for my taste
drbodarobert14 May 2020
So the main reason I'm a bit disappointed in the season opener is that, in my opinion, it's too long to be enjoyable. It felt dragged out and I couldn't help being a little bored during the episode, which had never happened to me before watching SoA. I know that the season 6 finale was even longer, but that episode had sufficient and interesting enough content to be enjoyable. Secondly, the violence and brutality in this episode is too much even for someone like me, who normally doesn't have a problem with violence on TV. If it had advanced the plot somehow I would be justified somewhat, but it didn't. The explicit brutality in the opening and closing scenes feels a bit pointless and makes it hard to watch.

Brutal but in a way that builds the story
stevelesley5 January 2021
The whole premise of this show is Jax trying hard to be a good man but descending further and further into being a total fruitcake. That's a story that has been done time and time again - Sopranos, Godfather etc. The former is also similar in its "mummy issues".

This episode (especially the beginning and end) continues that trajectory. At this point (and I write before knowing) it is obvious it has to end in tears. I tend to be a nurture not nature guy, and this show, albeit fictional, shows me why.

Will Juice kill Jax ?
alberto-gomez-colmenares30 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
In the first episode of sons of anarchy we see that Juice is on the run from his motorcycle gang. What is Juice going to do there is no way that if the motorcycle gang tries to kill him that he won't defend himself. Juice may be unstable but that doesn't mean he won't defend himself if worst comes to worse. As you can see out of his flight or fight sense he is choosing flight but in this episode we see him pull his gun out ready to murder Unser. Juice is starting to turn on his fight instinct. I believe that if Juice feels that his going to die he will kill anybody who is trying to kill him without hesitation. As he did in Season 4 by killing Miles instead of dying. On youtube there is a video of Theo Rossi saying that him and Jax will fight and that he will kill Jax.

I hope Jax and Gemma suffer
kurt782528 March 2022
I hope Jax and Gemma die gruesome and painful deaths. I also hope that the rest of their greasy broke ass little gang die along with them.

Wayne to because he's useless.

I hope the Asians rip out their hearts I give this episode a thick six out of ten.

That's about enough....

Warning: Spoilers
And just as the Sons of Anarchy are preparing for their final landing, Kurt Sutter decides it would be more fun to nosedive the plane right onto the tarmac! I've always had a love-hate relationship with this show. While at it's best it's quite well-written, with a textured and compact plot that successfully juggles the fate of numerous interesting characters, the show is also prone to ludicrous story lines (gun running and the 'Real' IRA) and absolutely unnecessary violence. And the opener to Season 7 is definitely on the downswing here! Unlike some of the better seasons (Season 1, 5 and 6 come to mind) I have a feeling 7 is going to be a struggle to get through by the way this episode sets the tone, which is going back to barely believable plot twists. What I found most ridiculous in this episode is not only how easily the Sons swallow Gemma's contrived story about the Chinese involvement in Tara's murder (are you telling me Jax, knowing how psychotic his mother is and how much she had it in for Tara, not for a moment believed that she could have been involved?), but also how an innocent party so gruesomely and brutally meets his fate (the level of violence in this scene and in the episode as a whole is just out of control - Kurt Sutter must be a deeply, deeply disturbed man!) For a show to be successful, the audience needs to sympathise with most - if not all - of it's protagonists. After Tara's death, I couldn't care less what happens to the rest of that misanthropic, vile biker gang and that annoying matriarch figure they spinelessly allow to control them.

Bloated first episode of final season
joncamaney6 January 2019
The worst traits of Sons of Anarchy are in full display here: bloated, contrived, overlong, grotesquely and needlessly violent. Even if contrived, the last season of Season 6 was riveting and showcased a great performance by the sometimes uneven Maggie Siff. This clocks in at 1 hour and 15 minutes, and there is a lot of padding. Jax continues playing gangs against each other and you wonder if criminals are this stupid, how do they get any crime done. On the plus side Katey Sagal is great as usual,// are Drea de Matteo and CCH Pounder.

the show could have done without Gemma
ameliek816 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm re-watching the entire series. I remember when it first aired, I disliked Gemma, but in a "love to hate" kind of way. Watching the series again, I've noticed how useless her character actually is. The entire series would have played out the exact same way without her. The story line of her being involved in JTs death went nowhere. It could have just been Clay and it would have ended up the same. The story line of Jax having his dads journals went nowhere. So all of that could have happened without her. Her being raped added nothing to the story. They would still have gone after The League. It didn't really unite Jax and Clay when she told them as Clay still betrayed the club, still had his own plans for things, it changed nothing and Jax still didn't trust him or approve of things he did. Her getting arrested and framed by Stahl didn't affect the story. Stahl was still going after the club, Stahl could have framed basically anyone else, or no one, it wouldn't have changed anything, seeing as they got her to change her story anyways, having Gemma was just a detour in the story. Gemma was useless in Ireland. Without her, Maureen would still have walked in on Jax and her daughter, they would have found out their half siblings, she still would put the letters in Jax's bag. Gemma added nothing to that story. The whole thing about Tara finding the letters could have been done without Gemma. Again, Gemma was just a detour. It would work exactly the same without her, Clay would find out about the letters, put a hit on Tara, and everything would be the same. Nero could have been introduced without her. She was unnecessary and just another detour in the story. Even her killing Tara could have been done without her. Tara could have been killed at any point during the show, either in the attempted kidnapping or the explosion at the club. Jax would still have unraveled, and it wouldn't have been so rushed. They could have really gone deep into his vengence instead of cramming it into a couple episodes. All Gemma gave us was the overused "I've got to protect my family" and it's variations, which she continued to use in this episode. I kind of want to go through the series again and turn that into a drinking game. That and "it's OK sweetheart" and "I'm sorry". Gemma's presence on the show is so painfully drawn out, the only logical explanation is that Kurt wanted to give his wife a starring role, and keep her there for as long as possible even if it undermined the show. I'm inclined to believe this because of 1- her character adding absolutely nothing to the show and 2- him having needlessly included her music in a few episodes. It's like a shrine to her. It's bad writing and bad TV to have a character that has no use. When an entire show would be the same without a character, it's bad writing to keep that character. Chuck has more purpose as a character than Gemma does. He brings comic relief, runs errands for the club, helps them on some of their jobs, etc. Won't be watching this series again, even as a drinking game.

A disappointing start to the final season
pingtime-768-68765 April 2024
"Sons of Anarchy" Season 7 Episode 1 kicks off with a lackluster start, failing to live up to the high standards set by its predecessors. The episode's descent into implausibility is evident from the outset, with characters seemingly acting out of character and storylines straining credibility. What was once a gritty portrayal of outlaw life now feels like a caricature of itself, sacrificing depth for shock value. The once nuanced character dynamics are replaced with melodrama, leaving little room for genuine emotional resonance. Additionally, the pacing feels rushed, with plot developments forced rather than organically unfolding. While the series has always embraced its darker elements, this episode's reliance on sensationalism feels gratuitous and ultimately hollow. As the final season opener, it fails to instill confidence in the show's ability to deliver a satisfying conclusion. Fans are left hoping for a return to form in subsequent episodes, but the premiere serves as a disappointing reminder of the show's decline. Hope the rest of the series gets better that this.
