Chenford fans, Eric Winter knows The Rookie Season 6 was a rough one for the couple. Just after the midway mark of the season, in “Secrets and Lies,” Tim (Winter) broke up with Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) after his past coming back to haunt him led to him lying to her then feeling like he “betrayed everything I thought was right about myself,” as he put it. “You deserve so much better. That’s why I’m walking away,” he said. “I always saw the breakup as a bit of a Ross and Rachel from Friends. It was like this couple that is at the moment of the best relationship ever and then things fall apart and they have to figure it out,” Winter tells TV Insider in the video above. “And I think that’s one of the beauties. I know fans went berserk and I totally get it. I saw it coming,...

Though Lucy said he was in an impossible situation and she would’ve done the same thing in his place, he argued she never would’ve been in that place and put her self-interest over her team. “You thought you could handle it. Details of Mike Leigh’s new film are beginning to emerge. The title, Hard Truths, and the leading cast have been confirmed.
Mike Leigh’s new film Hard Truths will be his first new release in five years. Mike Leigh’s films have been more sporadic in recent years, but it’s very much a case of quality over quantity, from Timothy Spall’s astonishing turn as Mr Turner in 2014 to 2018’s epic historical drama Peterloo.
Known for his improvisational method of creating characters, there is no script, in fact there us often no basic idea of what the plot will be when his actors are cast. Leigh begins by having private conversations with his actors about people they know in real life followed by an in-depth period of inprovisation. Actors are then introduced to each other and over an intensive couple of weeks, even months, the characters are developed.

The human mind is an unpredictable and dangerous thing, as so often the curiosity borne out of a desire to explore something unknown turns into a destructive, egocentric approach to annihilating the very thing. As the third episode of Apple TV’s Monsterverse series, Monarch: Legacy, continues the momentum initiated by the first two, viewers find themselves witnessing the timeless scenario of human intervention disrupting the course of natural events time and time again.
In the previous episodes, Cate, a survivor of the San Francisco G-Day event, went to Japan after her father’s demise or mysterious disappearance in order to check up on his belongings, but instead found that he had a secret family there. It is also revealed that Hiroshi is the son of explorers William Randa and Keiko Miura, who, along with their common friend, Lieutenant Lee Shaw, tried to scour the world in search of primeval Titans during the late 1950s,...

It won’t be “Another Year” after all before we see Mike Leigh’s next movie.
The seven-time Oscar-nominated British filmmaker behind classics new and old like “Secrets & Lies,” “Happy-Go-Lucky,” and “Topsy-Turvy” hasn’t released a picture since his 2018 epic “Peterloo” got backed by Amazon. The director in February 2020, of all times, announced a new project with U.S. distribution courtesy of Bleecker Street. The rest is history, and now, three years later, the film is starting to take shape.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Leigh’s next movie, financed by Film4 and set for a hometown U.K. release from eOne, will at last begin production this year.
But there’s a catch for the next film from the “Vera Drake” writer-director, which is that any details remain not just scarce but nonexistent: The project is reportedly so secret that plot specifics are not only being kept...

Welcome back to Oscars Playback, in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng revisit Oscar ceremonies and winners of yesteryear. This week, we go back 25 years to the 69th Academy Awards in 1997, honoring the films of 1996.
This year was known as the Year of the Independents or “Sundance by the Sea,” as returning host Billy Crystal dubbed it, as four of the five Best Picture nominees — winner “The English Patient,” “Fargo,” “Secrets & Lies” and “Shine” — were independent films and just one, “Jerry Maguire,” was a major studio release. The fear for the future of the big dogs was palpable in the Shrine Auditorium and that was basically what Crystal’s entire monologue was about (watch clips from the ceremony here). But as we now know, the very next year we got “Titanic.”

It was an unusual evening at the Oscars, with several fresh faces, a veteran actress receiving her first nomination and one film dominating the ceremony. Billy Crystal hosted for the fifth time on March 24, 1997, and kept the ceremony lively, along with award winners who offered some rather entertaining acceptance speeches.
Best Picture winner “The English Patient” dominated, winning nine out of 12 nominations. Fellow Best Picture nominee “Fargo” was the only other recipient of multiple awards, winning two out of seven bids. The films that rounded out that category were “Shine,” which won one out of seven nominations, and “Jerry Maguire” and “Secrets and Lies,” each with five bids, with the former winning one and the latter leaving empty-handed.
A WWII-era epic romance detailing the tragic love affair of a burn victim and his married lover, “The English Patient” claimed victory for its score, sound, art direction, cinematography, costume design and editing.

One of the most open races at the Screen Actors Guild Awards is the top prize for film ensemble. The wide-ranging category features the casts of “Belfast,” “Coda,” “Don’t Look Up,” “House of Gucci” and “King Richard,” which also happens to be the order from top to bottom in our odds. It’s so up in the air that all five of them have at least one Expert pick to prevail, with “House of Gucci” boasting two. If the high-fashion crime drama pulls it off, it’ll be just the second SAG ensemble winner not to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.
Thus far, the only film with this dubious honor is “The Birdcage” (1996), which nabbed the ensemble award in the second year of the category’s existence (it was not awarded at the first SAG Awards ceremony). The Mike Nichols comedy defeated “The English Patient,” “Marvin’s Room,” “Shine” and “Sling Blade.

After all the talk of a potential Lady Gaga-Kristen Stewart Oscar night showdown, could it be much ado about nothing?
Both actresses have a very vocal and passionate fanbase. Leading up to the Screen Actors Guild awards nominations, many predicted that the two would ultimately be the final two standing in the race for the Oscar statuette. However, that was until Stewart was snubbed for her turn as Princess Diana in Pablo Larraín’s historical fable. Many Gaga stans were elated by Stewart’s miss, seeing it as a clear opening for the performer to carry her “House of Gucci” momentum from a win at the New York Film Critics Circle and to a potential SAG Award, and then eventually the Academy Award.

Double, double toil and Oscar trouble.
Can Frances McDormand break the Best Actress bubble?
What bloody man is that, who would make such a prediction?
Is it based on fact, or Shakespearean fiction?
Be bloody, bold and resolute.
And when analyzing the derby, awards-astute.
Screw your courage to the sticking place.
Realize that McDormand can indeed make the race.
And must they all be hanged that swear and lie?
Not before reading these five reasons why.
1. She’s bloody Frances McDormand.
There’s nothing more to be said. The academy has shown that it loves this woman in a way that it loves few others. She has now been nominated six times in five consecutive decades. And she’s gone three for three in her Best Actress bids. She earned her inaugural victory for 1996’s “Fargo” – despite appearing in less than one-third of the film and facing stiff competition from...

U.K. director Mike Leigh directs films in a wide range of moods but his working-class dramas are what made his name. All or Nothing is an emotionally punishing story of everyday life on a lower rung of a stagnant economy, where nobody has dreams and pessimism is the order of the day. The bitterness and anger are most evident in the abusive attitudes and verbal brutality from one generation to the next, even with the caring, sensitive Penny (Lesley Manville) and the inoffensive Phil (Timothy Spall). Leigh’s players craft heartbreaking characters whose individual miseries can’t be dismissed. We invest heavily in the hope of a positive outcome even as everything we see says, ‘no.’ Yet the film’s honesty doesn’t want us to give up on these people.

In 1996, a plane carrying a high school girls’ soccer team to a championship goes down in the mountains. In present-day, the survivors of that event are adults who have never publicly discussed what happened during the many months in the wilderness before they were rescued.
Yellowjackets, Showtime’s new survival drama debuting Sunday (10/9c), chronicles the girls’ “descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later,” the show’s official logline reads.

Exclusive: Michael Ealy is set as a lead opposite Kristen Bell and Tom Riley in Netflix’s eight-episode limited series The Woman in the House, from Gloria Sanchez Productions. The series is expected to premiere in early 2022.
Created by Rachel Ramras, Hugh Davidson and Larry Dorf, who also serve as co-showrunners, The Woman In The House centers around heartbroken Anna (Bell), for whom every day is the same. She sits with her wine, staring out the window, watching life go by without her. But when a handsome neighbor (Riley) and his adorable daughter (Samsara Yett) move in across the street, Anna starts to see a light at the end of the tunnel. That is until she witnesses a gruesome murder… Or did she?
Ealy will play Douglas, Anna’s ex-husband. Bookish and pragmatic, he still has love for Anna but their past keeps them from imagining a future together.

Maybe she was kidding, but director Clio Barnard recently described “Ali & Ava” as her shot at making a “social-realist musical.” The phrase, which slipped out during an interview from the BFI London Film Festival, struck me as some kind of oxymoron at first: How could a rugged, true-to-life depiction of a struggling working-class English couple possibly coexist with that most surreal of cinematic genres? But in light of the end result, Barnard’s ambition makes perfect sense. The film’s two title characters don’t burst into song out of the blue but rather, listen to music as an escape from their everyday stresses. It’s the force that brings them together.

Leading British independent filmmakers expressed some frank views on gatekeepers acting as a barrier to independent cinema at a BFI London Film Festival panel discussion on Tuesday.
The panel consisted of Palme d’Or winner Mike Leigh (“Secrets & Lies”), Oscar winner Asif Kapadia (“Amy”) and Golden Bear winner Michael Winterbottom (“In This World”). The discussion used Winterbottom’s recently published book “Dark Matter: Independent Filmmaking in the 21st Century” as a starting point. The discussion was moderated by former London Film Festival artistic director Sandra Hebron.
Leigh, who debuted in 1971 with “Bleak Moments,” has a unique approach to getting funded in that, except for his films with historical subject matter like “Topsy Turvy,” “Mr. Turner” and “Peterloo,” he does not reveal what his films are about. The reason for this process, he says, is that he discovers what a film is about during the process of making it.

Jon Gregory, editor of such films as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and In Bruges has died, a representative confirmed to Deadline. He was 77.
Gregory worked with Mike Leigh across the director’s storied career, from an early short called The Short & Curlies to one of Leigh’s first features, High Hopes, to some of the director’s best-known work — such as Life Is Sweet, Naked and Secrets & Lies — to one of his most recent works, Peterloo. Leigh remembered his frequent collaborator in a piece posted by The Guardian today.
In it, Leigh praised Gregory’s ability to compose complex component parts into a cohesive whole. “He brought to the task his unique characteristic skill, imagination, sensitivity and sophistication, while, as always, staying true to the material,” wrote the director. He praised Gregory’s sense of when not to edit, as well.

Film editor who brought his brilliance to Secrets & Lies, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Four Weddings and a Funeral
When shooting the massacre scene in my film Peterloo (2018), the cinematographer Dick Pope and I worked in our customary mode – no script, no storyboard. However, unusually for us, we used three cameras for a substantial part of the action. The quantity and complexity of the resulting footage might have been daunting for most film editors, but this was far from the case for Jon Gregory, who has died aged 77 after a short illness.
He brought to the task his unique characteristic skill, imagination, sensitivity and sophistication, while, as always, staying true to the material. As Pope said: “Jon’s editing is always incredibly sympathetic to my cinematography. Whatever I produce, he’ll make the most of it.”...

At 78, with three Baftas and a Palme d’Or under his belt, the director still sees himself as an outsider. He talks about Hollywood’s obsession with big names, his determination to portray ‘real people’ – and being accused of pretension
Interviewing Mike Leigh is a daunting prospect, not because of his intimidatingly central plinth in the pantheon of British cinema – well, maybe a bit of that – but because he is extremely exacting. You just couldn’t work the way he does – his scripts are improvised, not written, resting on collaboration, trust, instinct, bravery – without weighing every word, cross-examining every sentence. Otherwise it would just be baggy. He takes this perfectionism into every interview, every conversation: Mike Leigh on Mike Leigh, a close textual and visual reading of his life’s work by Amy Raphael, reissued next month, bristles with this energy.
Then there’s the incredible range of his output:...

The cross-cultural romance film has seen many iterations, so the fact that filmmaker Clio Barnard has added an elegantly crafted and utterly enjoyable new entry into the oversaturated genre is as delightful a surprise as the film itself. Set in Barnard’s West Yorkshire, “Ali & Ava” charts the tender friendship and gradual romance that develops between two lonely souls from different worlds who share a love of music and a mischievous twinkle in their eyes. Energized by the engrossing charisma of leads Adeel Akhtar and Claire Rushbrook, “Ali & Ava” is

After going virtual last year and not handing out any prizes due to the Covid pandemic, the 2021 Cannes Film Festival returned to form by announcing its winners on July 17. How many of these will figure in the upcoming Oscar race? We recap the results from the 74th edition of this foremost of film festivals and review its history as a forecaster of the Academy Awards.
The top award at Cannes is the Palme d’Or. Over the years, 40 winners of this prize have amassed 135 Academy Award nominations. Seventeen of these have claimed a combined 32 Oscars. This year, the Palme d’Or went to French filmmaker Julia Ducournau‘s “Titane.” Her dramatic thriller centers on a father reunited with his son who was missing for a decade during which several unexplained crimes were committed. Ducournau is the second woman to take this top prize following Jane Campion‘s breakthrough in 1993 with “The Piano.

British director Clio Barnard put the northern English city of Bradford on the world film map with her previous award-winning efforts, “The Arbor” and “The Selfish Giant,” and she now returns for an interracial romance powered by two excellent performances.
In “Ali & Ava,” which premiered on Sunday in the Directors Fortnight sidebar of the Cannes Film Festival, Ali is played by Adeel Akhtar, who radiates an optimistic warmth despite going through a painful domestic situation and hiding the imminent breakup of his marriage from his proud Asian family. Indeed, he is still living with his wife (Ellora Torchia) and sleeping in separate rooms of a large house, and they both dutifully turn up at bustling family dinners.
However, Ali has taken a shine to the young daughter of one of his tenants; he gives her lifts to primary school, where he meets the little girl’s teacher, Ava (Claire Rushbrook), a blonde,...

Clio Barnard returns to the Cannes Film Festival with the British drama Ali & Ava. While billed as a romance, the Directors’ Fortnight entry doesn’t take the path of a traditional idealized love story, instead exploring the connection between a new couple within Barnard’s social realist world. Based on locals that she encountered while filming The Arbor (2010) and The Selfish Giant (2013) in Bradford, it stars Claire Rushbrook (Secrets & Lies) as Ava and Adeel Akhtar (Four Lions) as Ali.
Ava is a single mother and teaching assistant living in the kind of area cab drivers won’t go. Ali is a DJ and landlord who still lives with the wife he’s split from, and is keeping their parting a secret from his family. These characters have a lot of problems, and on paper, they could be living miserable lives in a downbeat film. But, no: Barnard seeks out...
