Wonderful Little Film
jon-8325 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I first watched this film when I was tracking down various works of Kelly Thornton, who had impressed in Life's a Breeze (2013). The story of the short film focuses on a high school girl struggling with serious issues of self-confidence leading to her battling depression. The crux of this film centres on a 'battle of the bands' contest which she is entered in with some of her classmates, and whether or not she will be able to perform as the lead singer.

Thornton does a really excellent job in this film. Although she will likely never end up as a leading performer, she does an excellent job portraying the struggles which many women (and men) faced in their teenage years. You feel significant empathy for her in her challenges, and are rooting for her when she gets on stage.

While the acting is good, and the production design certainly leaves nothing to be desired for a film such as this, it is the (spoiler!) final song which Thornton performs that has brought me back to this film multiple times. It is a really uplifting song which echoes the roller-coaster that Thornton's character has been on throughout this film and signals her regaining of confidence in herself. Once again Thornton will not be front and centre in any big Hollywood musicals any time soon but she sings with so much passion and gusto, and there is so much character in her voice, that I have listened to this song over and over again and prefer her voice to many of the overly polished voices heard on the airwaves today.

This film is really a feel-good story and should be watched by anyone who need a little boost when they're having a bad time.
