Never bring a gun to a knife fight
snoozejonc21 January 2022
The walls of Alexandria are breached and the zombies flood in.

This is a solid episode with some moments that frustrate.

The plot is full of strong horror spectacle and character drama, particularly involving the likes of Deanna, Ron, Morgan and Carol. The pace is slightly uneven and it kills some of the urgency of the situation in some instances. Sometimes packing both action and emotional exchanges into a narrative can be too much when not done flawlessly.

I enjoyed the exchanges Deanna has with both Rick and Michonne, but along with the scenes between Carl and Ron, Carol and Morgan, Glenn and Enid, it all adds up to a lot of time spent pulling your attention from the impending crisis.

The scenes with Carol and Morgan are the most annoying. I understand their conflict is meant to frustrate and it makes sense given their opposite outlooks. What frustrates more are the plot contrivances used to string out the drama. When other characters enter the scene we have a gun vs knife situation that feels implausible to me. Characters portrayed as battled-hardened, crack shots willingly handing over guns that could swiftly resolve the situation.

All performances are excellent as ever with Tovah Feldshuh standing out for me.

For me it's a 7.5/10 but I round upwards.

Getting more tense!
and_mikkelsen9 February 2024
Right from the beginning, this episode throws us into a dire and intense situation, as the walls crumbles and the herd enters Alexandria!

We got ore and horror and never reallh knows what to expect, siting on our edge to figure out how they are gonna make it out of this one!

This episode has its strong character moments, emotions and drama! Ron looses it, as panic takes over and he becomes even more delusional! Great moments with Michonne, Rick and Deanne, that wraps the things set up between them back in season 5!

At the end it seems like only a miracle can save them now, as the city gets swarmed!

chapter full of suspense, walkers, action and interaction between characters
MomentIMDB21 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The whole chapter focuses on the different groups that dispersed after the fall of the tower and the horde entering. The scene of the walkers entering is very epic. The best part is that of Rick and the others. The interaction between Carl and Ron is very good and I loved his fight. I loved Rick and Michigan with Deanna and it was very interesting and as for Michigan, he gave us his future goal. The part of Carol Morgan with the Wolf and Rosita and her group was very interesting and achieved development of past events. the scene when the walkers enter Rick's house and the others and when they walk among them it was very good. the bad thing was the cliffhanger

Completely Underrated
grondonamanu5 December 2020
This was one of the best episodes of the season. I don't know why people rated this with 7 or 8, I mean, it is a pretty solid mid-season finale, maybe one of the best. (Definitely better than Season 5 mid-season finale).

Don't Understand The Hate!

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was dramatic and delivered on every aspect. The walkers breaking into Alexandria, the drama between Carl and Ron, and Deanna's death were all reasons why this was a great episode. It was an awesome setup to "No Way Out." It gets us ready for arguably the best TWD episode, this one is no exception.

Walkers flood in through the now broken Alexandria wall in a suspenseful episode that kept me on the edge of my seat.
ben-grunert12 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
WARNING: SPOILERS- I really did think this was a good episode. The only problem for me was that the latest episodes seemed more slow and looking to build up to an epic mid season finale. Instead, the episode was extremely nerve wracking and tense and went by just like that, but it didn't deliver as well as I wished it had. Many things could've happened different and could've been fleshed out more like the Ron VS Carl incident and Carol VS Morgan battle. The wolf leaving with the doctor lady was kind of anticlimactic for me and only one death happening with Deanna and all was a bit surprising, though I did enjoy that Deanna storyline. Still, I feel like much more could've happened and the fact that Glenn showed like once and no RPGs were used and the return of Daryl's group didn't happen was a bummer in my opinion plus it was such a cliffhanger they left us at. I feel like I'm not giving it a super super high rating only because I was expecting so much more from this episode. I have a feeling the second half of the season is gonna be really good though. Don't get me wrong this first half was really good too I just was a little bummed out with the slight lack of action and closure on loose ends in this episode. Oh yeah and I almost forgot something. Ron's an asshole. Verdict: 8.3/10

Alexandria on fire!
joseph-voll-beliebt29 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Just wow, this show really knows how to create action-packed episodes. This one reminds me of "JSS" - but with walkers instead of Wolves. This midseason-finale is great and it captivated me from start to finish. Morgan is one of my favorite characters and Michonne is also brilliant here. Alexandria is in real trouble and the situation is dire as hell. It's a gut-punch and there are so many cliffhangers... Waiting for the second half of season 6 will be challenging and I already feel the need for more! "Start to Finish" is a really good episode and a nice conclusion for the decent first half of this season. The director did a great job and the writing is solid as well. TWD, you will be missed during Christmas!

A great episode!

Warning: Spoilers
Man, this episode left me speechless. It's one of these gut-wrenching episodes. "Start to Finish" played with my feelings throughout and I don't know what to do during the TWD winter break.

The acting is great and the writing does the job of delivering suspense and a huge bunch of drama. I enjoyed Deanna the most and the music during her scenes just... wow. The whole plot with the Wolf is awesome. To see Michonne back in action is also a delight.

This episode is very uneven (in a good way). Especially fans of the comics will love it. This episode offers some great scenes - but it feels way too short!

Great episode. A few complaints
pjgs20024 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The highlight of this episode was definitely the scene where Deanna dies. From the beginning I really liked her character, and I can't think of a better way for her to exit the series and have her character arc completed. Her death scene was executed flawlessly, and the moment where all the sound cuts out and we just see her scream was the most powerful shot of the entire episode, and maybe one of the best moments of the whole season so far. I really liked this episode, but that one kid Sam (had to Google his name) just brings down the whole show. At the end they were showing us all of the characters making their way through the walkers, and then they finish the episode with Sam saying "Mom? Mom?..."

Honestly, I'm not trying to say that the kid is a bad actor, but his character is just really annoying and unnecessary to the show.

Aside from that, Start to Finish is a great episode that does the characters justice.

Mediocre from Start to Finish
SpoodermanDerp30 November 2015
"Start to Finish"is the mid season finale we've all been waiting for, the fall of Alexandria. Yet as huge as the scale might've felt at the start, it all falls and ends up in mediocrity till the finish.

Although the plot and what happened in the last episode surely should make this into a riveting and exciting episode, it doesn't really deliver as much. We've seen the prison fall, we've seen Terminus fall, this isn't much different. But what makes it different is that literally nothing happens that would make you jump your seat or make your heart pumping, it's all at the start when Alexandria does in fact fall, after that were treated to some conclusions with some of the story lines developed in the season so far (excluding Daryl, Abraham and Sasha). The tension between Carl and Ron seemed forced and out of place, the tension between Morgan and Carol was great in terms of showing how different and completely opposite the ideals of the two were. However everything else, it all just falls flat. It felt like the episode was just a minor wound to the group, Alexandria is destroyed yes we know, but it feels like it isn't and that the audience obviously knows that they will somehow get back especially with Rick's new leadership and they even made that clear in the episode. At the end of the episode, we got nothing, we perfectly know what HAS and WILL happen to each character except for maybe a few. There was a lot they could've improved on like giving us an ending that would leave us wanting for more, or keeping the tension established right from the start.

Verdict: 7.4/10

A whole lot of Dead.
fredschaefer-406-62320429 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
It has been an incredible Season 6 of THE WALKING DEAD so far-the Is Glenn Dead or not story arc alone makes this season far above most of what has come before. The mid season finale, titled Start to Finish, literally goes from cliffhanger to cliffhanger, making the title something of a misnomer, because nothing is finished by the end of this episode except for the fate of one major character.

There has been a hell of lot going this year, which has been centered around the supposedly safe haven of Alexandria, Virginia, where Rick and the gang have had an uneasy time fitting in with the sheltered residents. However, they have proved themselves invaluable when the going got tough, mainly when the quarry herd of Walkers got lose and the Wolves turned out to be not very far at all. And just when things started to look up ever so slightly, as when those green balloons from Glenn floated overhead, the tower tumbled to the ground, taking out a section of the wall, and letting the herd get inside, setting off a free for all for survival.

Not that there wasn't enough going on already with Morgan hiding the Wolf in the basement and Carol getting wise to him; sneaky Ron out for revenge and stalking Carl; Glenn and Enid trapped on the outside with no way in; Darryl, Abraham and Sasha far away and out of the action; Rick and Jesse getting it on despite his having put her no good husband down in the Season 5 finale; Eugene still being utterly useless until he reveals some hidden talent at the right moment; and Little Sam, who just wants to tune them all out and listen to same annoying Tiptoe Through the Tulips record again and again in his room.

I don't think Start to Finish was the best episode of the season, that honor clearly goes to Thank You, which ended with the incredible scene of Walkers tearing Glenn apart by Walkers-or so we were led to believe. There were great moments when the Walkers attacked, like Maggie's mad crawl up the ladder to safety or when the Dead surge inside the house after Carl and Ron's "tiff." But what stands out to me were the times when the living turned against each other, such as the before mentioned throw down between Carl and Ron ("Your Dad was an asshole.") and especially between Carol and Morgan over the fate of the Wolf. That didn't end well for either of them-Denise too. Then there was the farewell scene between Deanna and Michonne, one of the series best quiet moments; and they sure gave Deanna a great memorable exit, one worthy of her character. I thought the views on life and the future, expressed by the dying Deanna and the tied up Wolf, offered quite the contrast. There were a couple of great visuals in the episode: the stream of ants flowing through Sam's window, drawn by his food and the image of those Walker's trying to get inside the garage where Eugene, Rosita and Tara have taken refuge, it's something worthy of Romero.

In the end, all was left up in the air until the series returns in the new year, we fans didn't get the tearful Maggie and Glenn reunion we'd so hoped for, although Glenn did get to see her at a distance. We already know the "Guts" trick is not going to work out so well the second time around; it's just a question of who will die. Will this story line, based loosely on the comic's No Way Out arc, end the same way? What about Tobin, Aaron and Heath; they were pretty much MIA here.

But the best part of the show for me was the two-minute sneak peak of series return, when Darryl, Abraham and Sasha have the first run in with The Saviors and we first hear Negan's name spoken for the first time. Cannot wait to see what Jeffrey Dean Morgan will do with this role.

Overview of "The Walking Dead" Writers' Crutches
will-schwartz29 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know yet if this is the best season of the show, because honestly, the writers are developing more cliffhangers than they are characters. But I do think it has been on par with Season 5 so far. I thought tonight's episode was great, and a solid episode for character development and tense situations all around. But what the fans really needed was a 90 minute episode. No one wants to wait until February to see any expectations get crushed due to inevitable hype. The cost of a great show like this being a game of cat and mouse between the writers and the viewers is straining people's willingness to stick with the story. Whatever outcome the Alpha Wolf has on Alexandria; Whatever the cost is of Sam making noise amongst the herd; However Glenn and Enid plan to infiltrate the walls and rescue Maggie, it all should have been in that last, imaginary, half-hour. When the show returns, and I guarantee it won't return to the Alexandria storyline at first, as is the common trait of The Walking Dead, all expectations of mayhem and gore just simply can't be met, even if the writers provide another miraculous episode like Too Far Gone. The writers continue to chose to leave fans wondering for gratuitous amounts of time and it puts a damper on great things to come. All of this being said, I think this Season is fantastically driven and that the mid-season finale was very compellingly written, but I hate to see the show do what every other show does now which leaves a disconnect in viewer-ship. The show is already beginning the Negan storyline, as shown in the two minute preview, before it's even begun to wrap up the "no way out" scenario back at home. Don't bite off more than you can chew and then spit what you can't chew in the trash before the audience can catch up Scott Gimple, please.

Warning: Spoilers
"Look man, I get it, my dad killed your dad. But you need to know something, your dad, was an a*****e" -Coral Grimes. I don't know why people are saying disappointing mid-season finale. Although this is technically the mid-season finale, it doesn't feel like one. The next episode feels like the mid-season finale. It is the climactic episode with a high rating and it ends the first half of the season. And this must shock some twd fans but 9 is just as close in the middle of 16 as 8. In this episode, Alexandria gets overrun by walkers and the characters hide in Jessie's house. When Michonne is treating Deanna's wound she realizes there's a bite mark. The stupid characters finally remember that you can use walkers to camouflage yourself from other walkers. Nope, the characters are back to being stupid. Owen appears again. This season has been so boring I forgot he even existed. No, I forgot the wolves existed. Anyways, Carol and Morgan have a fight over whether to kill Owen or not and then Owen knocks both of them out and escapes. Rosita and Tara decide to give Owen their guns when she has Denise hostage and then he decides not to shoot them. Deanna, being bit, decides to waste all of her bullet on walkers and gets brutally eaten instead of committing suicide. I don't know why the characters are so stupid lately. My favourite scene is when Eugenius Porter is reading a book about world history while holding a lighter. And then, he uses one of his many of his skills from his skill set to unlock a door. Still no sign of Daryl, Abraham and Sasha. At least this season gives us one good episode before it is back to its stupidity.

Warning: Spoilers
The show as a whole was very good up until Rick left. Then it's garbage and just like all the rest out there .

Rewatching it with my girlfriend made me realize how stupid some characters are. Take Morgan for example. His idea of "all life is precious" was either the most dumb thing they could come up with or intentionally written to show how dumb some people ended up. Either way, annoying as hell.

Secondly, the scene with that guy getting out and the typical "hand over your guns while I have a knife ".

Thirdly, while the show introduces one of the best character, Negan, it's just a reminder of how stupid the ending is written with him being a shadow of his former self and the night with Glenn.

Sparks of genius peppered with dumb as fk moments.

Tense Moments in a Great Episode
claudio_carvalho30 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The tower collapses on the wall and a herd of walkers breaks in Alexandria through the breach. However Rick, his group and the Alexandrians run to their houses and stay protected from the walkers. Rick brings the wounded Deanna with him to Jessie's house, and soon Michonne discovers that she was bitten by a zombie. Maggie escapes from the walkers climbing a lookout platform. Carol twists her ankle but is rescued by Morgan; however she does not trust him and she wants to know who is hidden in the house. Meanwhile Denise has a conversation with the Wolf that Morgan brought to the house. When Ron attacks Carl and tries to kill him, the noise attracts the walkers to the house. Carol escapes from Morgan and finds the hidden Wolf. She wants to kill him but Morgan protects the guy. Rick decides to disguise the survivors in the house with walker remains to go to the arsenal. Will his plan work?

"Start to Finish" is one of the best episodes of this Sixth Season. The screenplay has several tense moments, like for example Maggie tries to escape from the zombies. Or when the coward Ron trying to kill Carls. Or when Sam opens his mouth in the middle of the zombies. Or the friction between Morgan and Carol. The consequences of Morgan's attitude saving the Wolf will be seen probably on the next episode. The dramatic moment is Deanna aware that she will become a zombie but not ready to die. My vote is nine.

Title (Brazil): "Start to Finish"

Note: On 24 April 2016, I saw this show again.

This episode was phenomenal one of their best episodes. It was so thrilling and emotional I knew something bad was gonna happen it was so exciting and scary at the same time. The final 10 minutes shook me i don't understand the hate this was so AMAZING and that boring morgan focused ep deserved a 7 not an 8.

this is how the spirit of all episodes must be
seshasai-tris30 November 2015
This can be considered the best episode of the season. It has so many moments that got me to the edge of my seat. The tension is high, and the characters are in their zone. The screen play is well done in this episode.

All hell breaks lose in the finale as we all know it. Our heroes find a place (road/jail/community) in the first episode and then we have character building in the mid episodes and in the final episode all hell breaks lose and everything is destroyed. This episode follows the same pattern.

This episode also makes me wonder why Rick and his team don't cover themselves up in the zombie-goo and escape in the herds.

This also reminds me all the seasons have the same story over and over and we try to seek what is in the series for the future. Are they going to show if there is a cure of any sort? or our characters get involved in some place that will be destroyed eventually and they go on for a search again all over?

My rating 7.8/10

Gripping episode but an abrupt ending
TheDonaldofDoom27 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Well, the scenario was standard WD fare, something which we get at least once every season, a walker infiltration. It's what we saw coming. Still, it was a gripping episode as the characters tried to escape. It also led to Deeana's death, which I didn't expect. For some reason I saw her as one of the 'safe' characters this season, but I was wrong. It's great when WD defies your expectations like that.

Unfortunately, there are a few missteps in other areas. The Wolf escaping was highly predictable and felt contrived due to how unrealistic it is. Not only has Morgan transformed into a one-dimensional, idiotic, 'all- life-is-precious' character, but at the same time Carol was so determined to kill the Wolf AND the Wolf somehow managed to get free? That just seems totally unbelievable. At least no one got killed, as that would've been one of WD's dumbest moments ever, which would be saying something for a show that is frequently dumb.

I was also disappointed by how little we saw of Glenn this episode. This season doesn't seem to have been plotted very well as since we found out Glenn's alive, his existence has made no difference in this episode. Why bring him back if he isn't reunited with Rick's group in a mid-season finale? And why show the group finding out he's alive as the cliffhanger of the previous episode if he has no bearing on this one?

The ending of the episode was quite weird. There's nothing wrong with a cliffhanger, but it wasn't what I'd call a cliffhanger. The group were escaping, and Sam was saying 'mum'. And that's it. Some cliffhanger.

An imperfect episode in an imperfect season. This had the potential to be amazing, but wasn't due to some missteps.

"Start to Finish" is a thrilling mid-season finale that follows the residents of Alexandria as they try to escape from the community after it is overrun by wal
fernandoschiavi16 March 2024
Rick scrambles to get everyone inside as the walkers pour in. He barricades himself, Carl, Judith, Michonne, Deanna, and Gabriel in the Anderson house. While there, Deanna discovers that she has been bitten.

Carol, hiding in the home Morgan has taken, discovers that the man has kept Owen alive, despite the Wolves nearly decimating the town. Morgan attempts to defuse the situation, but Carol insists on killing Owen. The two fight, and Owen uses the opportunity to knock Morgan unconscious and take Denise, the doctor, hostage. Rosita, Tara, and Eugene arrive, but have to obey Owen's orders to stand down, for Denise's sake. Owen takes the woman out of the basement and the house, leaving the other five survivors inside.

Despite successfully defending the Anderson house, Rick and Michonne realize they need to leave and head for the armory. A dying Deanna makes Rick promise to look after her people and her son. Covered in walker guts, Rick and the group make their way out of the house into the herd leaving Deanna with a gun inside the house.

"Start to Finish" is a thrilling and suspenseful mid-season finale that follows the residents of Alexandria as they try to escape from the community after it is overrun by walkers. The episode is notable for its intense action sequences, particularly the group's harrowing escape through the streets of Alexandria. The episode also explores themes of survival and sacrifice, as the residents must make difficult choices in order to ensure their own survival.

One of the most memorable scenes in the episode is when the group is forced to take shelter in Jessie's house and must find a way to escape without attracting the attention of the walkers outside. This scene is a testament to the group's resourcefulness and ability to think on their feet in order to survive.

This Episode Was a 7/10
kieransharp-1016013 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
spoilers ahead for season 6 episode 8...

The death of Dianna i thought was handled very well and i think that her character had to die in this episode because we need leader rick back and we need that ricktatorship.

Father Gabriel defiantly stepped up and i thought that it was nice seeing him kill a walker again since the last walker he killed was in episode 16 of season 5.

Ron was defiantly also handled very well in this episode but i thought that his confrontation with Carl could have been a lot better than it was very opened ended and didn't really conclude, I hope this is because there will be more of a climax between them in 609.

Sam was also good in the episode. I liked the beginning with tip toe through the tulips playing i thought that the song set the mood very well

those were some of the stand out characters for me in this episode i thought that rest was handled very well and it was an all round good episode of the walking dead.

this concludes my first ever review, I know it very short but i like to keep things brief.

Finale of the first half
khalid_kba29 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
i did not like this episode because of certain things i cant say it because it contain spoilers. I think in this episode something happened and in my opinion it shouldn't happen in the first half, again it is in my opinion. The first episode of the second half will show us what is gonna happen and what kind of trouble they are gonna be in. i think the big things happened in this episode, is the transfer from peace into a trouble and the appearance of a new character. This episode might be interesting for some viewers, but all what I'm saying is in my opinion. In general, i think this season is much better than season 5, since there is lots of aspects happening there. But this episode wasn't interesting in my opinion. Hopefully, the second half will be surprising.

Alexandria's fall
TheLittleSongbird21 October 2019
Season 6 was an inconsistent season, generally not near as good as the previous seasons but much better than what was to follow when 'The Walking Dead' felt like a different show altogether. When it was good, it was great with the first four episodes being among the best of the latter seasons and as good as the high points of Seasons 1-5. When it was not so good, while not as bad as the low-points of Seasons 7 and 8, it was frustrating.

As far as the first half of Season 6 goes, there were two episodes that frustrated (well, "Always Accountable" disappointed too but was still a good episode). One was "Now", which was an example of how not to do an episode that didn't really progress anything much. The other is this mid-season finale "Start to Finish". Although it was worse-reviewed, actually still consider it better than "Now", the acting is better here, it is not as much of a standstill episode and there is one scene that is especially done well. Still consider it one of the worst episodes of 'The Walking Dead' up to this point sadly.

There are good things certainly, none of the previous 'The Walking Dead' episodes were irredeemable, and neither is "Start to Finish". It is a typically well made episode, the usual grit in the photography is there and it does well in being atmospheric as well. Some of the direction is alert and accomodating, while the music is suitably haunting and isn't over-bearing.

Felt that Deanna's final scene was handled very powerfully and that it was very poignant. The Carol and Morgan partnering has some nice tension too, mostly because of Carol with the sense of unease with her increasing and it is great to see. The ending did have a promising build up. The acting on the most part is fine.

Did think that Chandler Riggs came over as wooden, and do agree that Sam is pretty annoying in this episode. Also agree about everything with Carl and Ron being very misplaced at innapropriate times, and that it was not very engrossing. Although there were definitely moments the storytelling didn't come to life enough, the pace can be dull, there is a lack of tension and suspense with too many too easy close calls and contrivances (like the wolf) and it also felt thin dramatically and like there was not enough going on.

In spite a promising build up the very end came over as a let down, it doesn't come over as much of a surprise and it felt anti-climactic. There can be too much talk, and sadly the dialogue isn't taut enough and sounded very forced. Did not like how some of the characters are written, with a tendency to behave like idiots making stupid and implausibly clumsy decisions that one does not expect them to make, especially Morgan. The previous episode did so well in progressing the characters and bringing out different sides to them, but they felt dumbed down in comparison here.

Concluding, disappointing mid-season finale. 5/10
