Absolute Killer Blow
bobdunning-829-4645449 January 2024
This 2016 documentary on the film 'Absolute Beginners' sees several of the film's makers and stars reflect candidly on the film, which has become a 1980s cult curio. We are told that 'Absolute Beginners' was a critical disaster in the UK, but did all right in the box office, whilst in the US it was well received critically but without this being reflected well in the box office.

All those involved talk proudly about the film, but with a hint of sadness that it did not become the huge hit for which they had the ambition. In the UK 'Absolute Beginners' has become a by-word for over hyping a product, and the makers both rue this and accept their role in it happening.

It is unusual seeing a documentary tie-in say some less than flattering things about the film it is a dvd bonus extra for, but this warts and all approach is refreshing. Julian Temple tells us he had to go abroad to carry on directing due to the 'Absolute Beginners' hype backlash, but somehow he's forgiven it enough to pop up here to give his side of the story.

This documentary is interesting and well worth a watch.
