Fantastic !

I watched it twice and totally planning to watch another time. These series dive with us into the beauty of the Greek mythology. Following a logical sequence of the stories so you can get the whole picture. It allows you to understand the origin of a word a myth through a series of 20 episodes. Added to this the eloquence of the narrator in the original version (which is french). Really excited to watch the sequel of this which is the Illiad of Homer

Wonderful visuals.

I really enjoyed this series more than I thought I might. The visuals are amazing. Some episodes are less entertaining than others but just ignore another cool one will be right up. If anyone knows how to find out what all the art pieces are please post!

Brilliant, but maybe not for younger viewers

I love this series. It makes clear what so many other tellings of these stories does not. Firstly, you get the connective tissue between most of the stories, meaning they mostly work as one big explanatory myth - not just of creation but many other aspects of life. Plus, you get the key characters' backstories and motivations. Be warned: one hell of a lot of those motivations turn out to be sex, meaning that, while not in any way depicted salaciously or pornographically, a lot of this might be a bit much for, say, under-10s.

My personal reaction: pending further learning, all this means this is now my favourite cosmology, presenting us with the uncomfortable notion that a terrible madness composed of lust and vanity maybe at the heart of and inseparable from the life force. No wonder the Greeks gave us the conjoined opposites tragedy and comedy.

Yeah I gave it a 10

Great Greek Myths is the English translation for this French production. aAt least I think it is French. Why did I give it a 10? Because anything that educates the ignorant masses in this day and age gets a 10 from me. From Athena to Zeus and everything in between, this series covers the story of Gods that existed before Christ. Watch it and learn. The ancients knew a thing about human nature. Amazing that modern humans don't know crap about human nature. We've gone backwards folks, hope y'all are happy.

More information than school
RGanner8326 March 2021
I remember learning about ancient history in school. I remember being fascinated by it. Of course Greek and Roman mythology were a part of that. I remember reading about Perseus and Heracles, Achilles and so on. I remember seeing the movies about greek mythology as a young adult. This series dives in to the real meat of the myths. It connects them to why things are referred to and called like they are today. It corrected some of the things I thought I knew. I'm truly glad I watched this series.

Amazing series...

Maybe a tad more nudity than is neccesary, but otherwise superb. While not all encompassing, it had a lot to teach someone who has been a fan of Greek mythology for decades. I would recomend to any student who doesnt have an issue with (artistic depictions) of the human anatomy.

Great but manipulated
cnpoole7527 April 2021
I was shocked when they suggested the Egyptian Gods was created or based upon the Greek gods.

This is absolutely untrue as the Greeks stole the thousands of years of research from Alexandria wheb it was attacked. The school of mysteries.

But generally the tories are well done but clearly about the Egyptianvgods which was adapted by the Greeks.

Season 3 Odyssey Narrator Ruins This Great Series
quicksvg16 November 2020
Seasons 1 and 2 (General Myths and The Iliad) are fantastic. Very cool animation and concept. Gripping storytelling. Effective music.

Season 3 lands with a thud. After such a great track record, this season was additionally disappointing. The writing in the English version (or maybe translation from the French) were weak (please stop saying stupefying/stupor. There is literally a thesaurus in your word processing program). And the narrator's regional New York state accent is KILLING ME. He's adding "r's" onto everything (Odysseus is apparently from "Ithaker" rather than "Ithaca." Fancy that.) He does not know how to pronounce a lot of words. Listening to him struggle through "impious" and "bestow" is nails on a chalkboard. Where is the Director? The Producer? The Sound Department? The Caterer? Someone please help this guy. Or better yet, get someone else with the Shakespearean voice you need to make classical storytelling work. If I wanted someone to read me bus timetables, I would go to a public transit website. Aaaaaarrrrrggggghhhh!!!!!!

English Translation is Inconsistent
wastingstaples18 February 2020
I made my account just so I could provide this feedback. After watching the English translation on Amazon Prime, it bothered me SO MUCH that they used the Roman name for Odysseus. Does anybody proof these scripts before they pay for dubbing? Considering Season 2 is entirely about The Iliad, it feels like a real miss to use the Roman name of a key Greek hero.

Too many errors
half_blood_vampire2 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I am a big fan of the Greek myths. I have been fascinated by them from a young age so when I discovered this series I couldn't wait to watch. I think the mix of animation with art and artefacts is brilliant. This is as far as my admiration goes for this series. Whilst I understand that in order to reduce the stories down to 25 minutes they have to miss out bits of the stories is fine. It becomes a problem when they rework the stories to fit their designs. You can open any book of Greek myths and find out these stories, so the potential claim to be making them easier for people to understand cannot be justified. I can't say whether it is down to the original French script or merely the English translation but nearly every episode in the first series has at least one error. The second series is a lot better. This review would be extremely long winded if I listed every single error in the first series so I'm just going to detail three errors, two of which constantly recur.

1. This series keeps misidentifying gods. In the myths you were only a god if you were either one of the 6 children of Cronus and Rhea or one of the children of the 6. Anyone else was either a titan, titaness, nymph, dryad, muse or mortal. The only exception to this is Aphrodite who was a Titan but was invited by Zeus to become a goddess.

2. This series constantly refers to Hades as an Olympian. This is incorrect as to be an Olympian you had to spend at least some time living on Mount Olympus. After being given the underworld Hades chose to reside there and occasionally visited the surface and would only ever visit Olympus is necessity arose.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!

3. This series claims that not only did Zeus married Metis before marring Hera but his firstborn son Hephaestus existed before he was conceived. It is clear that whoever is behind the writing for this particular episode tried to give Zeus a better motive for philandering than sexual desire. According to this series Zeus married the titaness Metis and impregnated her only to discover the prophecy that his second child with Metis would be a son more powerful than Cronus and would overthrow Zeus. After hearing this prophecy Zeus challenges a heavily pregnant Metis to a metamorphosis competition to see how small she could become until she is small enough to be swallowed. A few days later he is stricken be an unbearable headache and is only relieved when his son Hephaestus whacks his head with his sledgehammer creating a gap from which Athena can be born. This version is completely wrong not least because Hera refused Zeus until they were married and Hephaestus is their first child.

Zeus did propose to Metis but she knew of this prophecy and refused him. Even after she informed him of the prophecy he still desired her. Zeus married Hera and whilst all were celebrating he slipped away with Metis and attempted to seduce her. She then ran transforming into various animals to escape. She then transformed into a lizard and hid an a cave only for Zeus to transform into a male lizard, enter the cave and force her to submit. After satisfying himself Zeus then asks her how small she can transform. Metis then changes from a lizard to a fly and Zeus (still a lizard) swallows her. Zeus then returns to Hera as if nothing happened and they proceeded to sire Hephaestus (who Hera believes to be so ugly she throws him off Olympus) and Aries. It is only after Hephaestus and Aries have grown up and Hephaestus returns to Olympus that Zeus's headaches begin. When he finds himself in unbearable pain and he requests one of the gods to kill him that Hephaestus hits him with his sledgehammer, releasing Athena.

False Mythology
wbagot128 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There are far too many segments that are simply made up. Rather than teaching ancient mythology and understanding the Greek culture that created it, it weaves a story believed to appeal to a modern audience.

Show me anywhere in historical writings where Zeus turned into a snake and killed his mother, Rhea? Enough said.

immature and trite
OneAnjel23 October 2021
The many high ratings for this series tells me that most viewers aren't familiar with Greek mythology and now believe themselves to be informed. What I found here is more of a tongue-in-cheek delivery using present-day definitions and descriptions of ancient words and places. I thought perhaps it was aimed at youth with its attempts to sound mocking and use modern verbal imagery. But while some does accurately follow a myth, the retelling here borders on offensive. The animation is trivial. It's true, many of the best films gloss over the more gruesome or shocking aspects, but this series offers them up in trite short sentences, and the pace doesn't allow for any of the nuance of true mythology. Better to check out greek mythology dot com on YT.
