A daunting, suspenseful thriller.
TheFirst0124 June 2020
The pilot tells me this is Chernobyl+Stranger Things+Lost. From the gorgeous cinematography to a likable cast, this show looks to be promising. I give the pilot episode an 8.5/10.

A great show starts out slow, mysterious and even a bit spooky
Revalopod12 October 2020
This first episode is probably one of the spookiest and mysterious episodes, because as the series progresses we start to understand things and it becomes more and more interesting but loses the spooky atmosphere. This is a great episode to really get us interested in all the mysteries but sadly it is quite insignificant to the overall plot. This episode successfully sets the tone and introduces many of the main characters without being totally overwhelming. But in a show like Dark, maybe it could have been a bit more complicated to start out with. I can't say it's one of my favourite pilots even though Dark is my favourite show.

Good Start
Littleman956 March 2021
Well, this episode is mainly about introducing every character and their situation, but the way it's narrated is exquisite! The story is intriguing and it keeps your breath suspended. I just hope they will keep this quality.

About the actors is too early to say something but no one gave me a bad impression.

The soundtrack is very... horror, suspenseful, but very perfect.

The Title suits the show perfectly..

Warning: Spoilers
Mild spoilers..We open on a bunker in the woods. It's filled with old photographs, newer ones, newspaper clippings, grenades, rifles. All sorts of things. A narrator lets us know that time is just a loop, it repeats, the past comes back to bear on the present.Dark takes place in the fictional town of Winden, whose forested surroundings are dominated by the cooling towers of a nuclear power plant. When a young boy disappears and a body is found in the woods, the resulting mystery seems to point to the nuclear plant.I've been expecting this series to be good, but the first episode completely blew me away. I mean, it's just an utterly incredible episode, and it's got me hooked. The cinematography, combined with the locations, the sets, is absolutely out of this world.Whole episode had a dark tone with a hair- raising soundtrack. Some weird things were left unexplained but that's what got me hooked for the next epiosde, especially the last scene.

I know many people are comparing it with stranger things but it is different in many aspects.Tense, weird and mind-bendingly complicated, Dark grabs you from the opening scene and relentlessly strangles you into submission in this gripping thriller. Despite the slight similarities to Stranger Things, comparing the two would be doing Dark disjustice. The two shows are completely different with Dark far more complex and sinister in its approach. Thought provocative, mature themes are explored throughout the series too and fully fleshed, complex characters help to elevate this German sci-fi show. There are times where its unnecessarily convoluted; the plot jumps between time periods with reckless abandon making it hard to follow at times but if you can persevere through this, Dark is an incredibly complex puzzle that's well worth taking the time to solve. It is unique blend of different genres,It's certainly TV Shows ERA now I can't believe so many shows are coming one after another,Even if it was my first time watching a show in German language I Didn't notice once.

Twin Peaks meets Stranger Things?
vitjolashkurti19 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I want to make known that I've only watched the first episode so far: Watching this episode i felt like i was having a deja vu; one where the worlds of twin peaks and stranger things collide. Common settings and storylines, the same visuals; same psychological feeling when watching the show. However, there's no denying that Dark doesn't lack authenticity and originality. Although inspired by the two shows mentioned before, i feel like all the secrets and narratives that are going to unfold soon will make Dark a masterpiece of its own.

What A Netflix TV Series
scenematica12 October 2019
Dark S01E01 TV series with solid cinematographic techniques, from taking picture angles to the combination of lighting. The longshot in this first episode is awesome. With the strains of a strong scoring success gave a bold impression on this film. The premise given is fairly intelligent and unique. For acting there are still some expressions that are not strong enough to be in accordance with the ambience of the current situation.

The ending of the film that gives the effect "what's next?" Is very interesting.

A decent pilot with typical flaws
tedscoasterchannel31 May 2019
When Dark was first announced, a lot of people compared the first german Netflix-production to Stranger Things. But i can tell, it is nothing like that. Dark is grittier, darker (no pun intended) and deeper. The first episode is one of the weaker ones, together with E2. As a german native speaker, some of the dialogue seems odd, no one would talk like that. The acting is a mixed bag as well, sometimes the performances are pretty strong, sonetimes they are way too dull (if you can call it that way). I guess this is because german film production is way behind, especially if you consider TV-shows. Almost every show here has really bad writing. On the technical level, there is nothing to complain. The cinematography and the lighting is phenomenal, by far the best i have seen in a german production since 2004's Downfall. The makeup and costume design fullfills it's purpose and the score is setting the perfect mood for the show.

Do yourself a favour and watch it. The first two episodes are a bit hard to watch (especially if you are a native speaker), but with episode 3 or 4, it get's so much better, becoming one of if not the best german TV-show ever.

From the beginning it looked pretty boring but after watching 30minutes(about the end) it started to get more and more interesting. Still not sure about some characters, some of them don't convince me at all.

Im re-watching the series again. I know what's gonna happen. When I first watched it the first 2-3 episodes were completely different from the rest of the series. Boring and weird. It took me 1 month and 5 YouTube videos to give a second shot at the series, resume the pilot episode and finish the series for the first time

For the first time I rate it with 5/10 For the second time I rate it with a 9/10

Instantly hooked
Leofwine_draca17 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
DARK is a spooky German TV show with a sci-fi twist. I heard it was best to go in knowing very little about it, which is what I did. Immediately from the first episode I was in love with the style; a constant bombardment of information regarding family and social relationships between characters in a small town, along with spooky set-pieces and creepy plot elements, plus a big surprise at the climax. It reminded me a little of the quality of THE RETURNED, and I'm instantly hooked and intrigued as to where it goes from here.

Need to see more
AvionPrince165 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Resume of events of the episode1 :No.

In June 2019, 43-year-old Michael Kahnwald commits suicide, but his mother Ines hides his suicide letter before anyone else notices it. On 4 November, after nearly two months of treatment at a psychiatric facility, Michael's teenage son Jonas returns to school and reunites with his best friend Bartosz Tiedemann, who is now dating Jonas's love interest, Martha. Erik Obendorf, the high school's main supplier of marijuana, has been missing for two weeks, and police officer Ulrich Nielsen - the father of Martha and her brothers, teenager Magnus and pre-teen Mikkel - has been assigned the investigation, which struggles to uncover any clues. Meanwhile, Ulrich is cheating on his wife, high school principal Katharina, with Jonas's mother Hannah. While searching for Erik's stash of drugs in a cave not far from the town's soon-to-be-closed-down nuclear power plant, Jonas, Bartosz, the three Nielsen children, and Franziska Doppler are frightened by strange sounds and their flickering flashlights, and Mikkel disappears as they flee the cave. The next day, the body of a young boy is discovered, but it is not Mikkel. At an unknown location, a hooded figure straps Erik to a chair, while clamping a mechanism around his head.

Review: Good start. Have some elements of mystery, characters development, we asked some question about them. Some mysteries are in place and we wonder what happened? And we are more curious after the end of this episode and we want to see more. Need more to have a complete review but its a good start.

Dreary and Boring.
datacdeme25 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing of any intrigue happens beyond the ominous letter and where Erik is. That is it, there are no plots, characters or settings that feel intriguing to me. Dark's pilot is intermittently creepy with some decent moments. But in the end, it falls flat with it's odd pacing and weird story structure.

Dark, brooding, genuinely frightening- what's not to like?
TheDonaldofDoom5 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
From the first scene, it had me hooked. It's difficult to know where this is going to go, but one thing they've got right is the atmosphere. So many shows attempt to create this dark atmosphere but "Dark" is true to its name by actually accomplishing it with its perfect lighting, haunting imagery and discordant soundtrack. The atmosphere really is perfect, and it's worth watching just for that even if its story turns out not to deliver. But I think the story will deliver. The mysteries here are set up surprisingly quickly, and with intent. Who is the hooded figure? Where is Erik and what is being done to him? Is Mikkel dead or is he in the past? What was behind Michael's suicide? Why did the letter have to be opened at that specific time?

One of my favourite moments is when a child's body is found, and the 80s walkman signifies the child is not from this time. It's a hell of twist on the traditional murder mystery. And in terms of cinematography, one of the most memorable scenes is actually the several-minute one-take introduction to the Nielsen family, which also features some of the only humour you can find in this dark series. There's also a real attention to detail throughout, with pretty much nothing you see being unintended. The raider bar that is found, for example, is actually a twix bar but in Germany they were called raider until 1991.

So far, the promise is there that the story will deliver too as various plot threads are set up involving a suicide, an unopened letter and a disappeared child. There are a few issues. One is the deliberately withheld information with Michael's letter. I'm not against deliberately held information if the fact it's deliberately withheld is disguised well, but Michael's letter has such an intriguing premise, not to be opened until a certain time... and then you don't see its contents when it is opened. There are a few moments where ithis episode missteps into cheesiness, such as when teenagers approach a cave and their flashlights start flickering. There's some heavy-handedness too. Jonas and Martha constantly looking at each other is continually done even though we got the point the first time. And the whole 'everything is happening again after 33 years' line which is uttered by a couple of the characters seems like a forced thing for them to say. It's just a heavy-handed way of saying, 'look, this is a show about time travel and interconnectedness!'

Great stuff overall. And it feels like it's going to get even better.

Episode 1
mathewmartin160417 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A show like Dark doesn't come around very often. I binge watched it a couple of weeks ago and have felt like a part of me was missing since finishing it. I've been drawn back into a 2nd viewing, and this episode is even better with all the extra knowledge that I now have.

A lot of reviews on here are making comparisons to Stranger Things and Twin Peaks, and while I completely agreed with them initially, this show far surpasses them and comes into its own after the first few episodes. There's maybe a little bit too much information and characters thrown into frame for a first episode, in fact I had to find a character tree online (which I highly recommend) in order to learn faces and names, but beyond that the premise and setup are executed amazingly. The opening 5 minutes is one of the most intriguing starts to a show that I've seen in a long time. The credits and song are beautiful too.

This first episode asks a lot of questions, and it presents itself as a show that demands your full attention if you want to find the answers. Don't sit and scroll on your phone, don't get up and make a coffee, just watch and enjoy.

Started watching this show
Neptune1654 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's incredible and we're hooked. Twix bars were called Raider bars in Germany until 1991 like Snickers used to be called Marathon in the UK. Imagine finding a new-condition chocolate wrapper that has not been made for 26 years. A person could possibly gave kept a box closed all this time, removed the gone-off chocolate and thrown the empty wrapper on the ground, but it is still a very odd thing to find., The candy bar wrapper was significant because 'Raider' is what Twix were used to be called in Germany. It was changed in 1991 so finding that wrapper in such a good condition is an immediate clue that only Europeans might get. An amazing one at that and then you're watching it with subs. That's just so great since the actors all deliver such an amazing performance so watching this with the original audio is the best way to go. You're definitely gonna enjoy it!

5 years and 200 recommendations later
benjaminchristopher20 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So, Dark has been around for a while now. Hard to believe it was 5 years ago all my friends and family were telling me to watch this. I had just come off watching some HBO masterpieces (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Soprano's and The Wire), so when I looked up this show briefly it just seemed a bit ridiculous, especially coming off the back of some of them other shows, I just wasn't in the mood for something like this.

Episode 1, sets us up nicely. We start off with a quote about time and relativity from the one and only Albert Einstein. This alludes to the fact everything may not be as it seems. We meet a family, a young lad who has lost his father to suicide, a school which has lost a pupil due to going missing and a woman who reads a letter which has a time stamp on it. Does this all sound exciting and origional? Not particularly, but the way this is presented and the aesthetic of the episode, we all feel something isn't quite right.

I won't go into to any more detail about the episode assuming most people have seen this now, but my verdict? I did like this. I've not quite seen the masterpiece which everyone is saying it is (yet), but I'm sure it might come. There is enough intrigue and set up to want me watching more.

A note here that the score is incredible, really harrwoing and sets the mood for the series. That along with the camera work and production values you can see there is good work put in. The camera moves so fluidly in the certain scenes which draws the viewer in to what's going on, there are no crazy choppy edits. A slow burn which may have me hooked.

The tied knots will slowly loosen up
Rajit_thebingewatcher17 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The story is set in germany and a nuclear plant is there . This is already a chilling start. To add on that add a boy is missing.

However "Dark" is not about the aforementioned chilling experience It is actually a twisted time travel saga which begins to unfold by the end of this episode. None of the characters are smiling, the dim lighting and the continous ominous music adds to the tension.

The town is portrayed as one of the calmer town, however in between it tells something similar happened 33 years ago. One of the prominent character Ulrich is cheating his wive, shown in the very beginning and you come to know that this incident will have long impact in the story.

Its a layered, convoluted story and hopefully the tied knots will slowly loosen up.

A dark mystery that sucks you in!
and_mikkelsen30 May 2023
Since I am a fun of thrilling mysteries, i finally decided to watch this show!

So far it has done a great job of hooking me in and make me invested in the story and characters! At this point I can already tell from the production value and acting, that this show is not your average experience, but something more!

The episode has its suspencefull moments, even scary sometimes! You csn tell there is something going on that you cant wrap your head around! We get some pieces, but not enough for it to make sense, qnd thats what has me sold.. the sense of mystery!

It is clear you have to pay attention and it feels like even the small details will mater later on!

Deffinetely worth checking out!

That Cinematography... in a TV series.... Holy Smokes.
GraXXoR25 January 2024
While two dozen reviews are going to tell you just how damn good this epsiode is I just want to talk about the cinematography and let others wax lyrical about how gorram good the acting and opening premise of this series is.

I'm just going to state briefly, as a cameraman how incredible the cinematography, lighting and grading is.

The tone of lighting and the grain in the exposures tells part of the story in and of itself. You wouldn't even need to see the faces or hear the voices of the actors to know EXACTLY what sort of tale this is going to be.

It's incredibly atmospheric and emotional. Every scene is filmed with precision and purpose.

For me, the cinematographic highlight is the breakfast scene at post-coital Ulrich's house... nearly three minutes of uncut, floating camera work amongst a bustling house full of people. Every line and gesture is on cue and perfectly framed.

Even just this scene alone would be worthy of serious praise... but when you contrast it with the choppy emotional cuts at the police station or the lethargic cuts of the overcast wilderness we really get to see film grade production!

Does nuclear power creep you out?
fabiogaucho5 December 2017
Some people are calling Dark the "German Stranger Things", and with good reason. The setting is the same: a small, sleepy town with bizarre, perhaps supernatural things going on that affect the whole community. We have an ensemble of common folk as our heroes, and there is this nearby big, mysterious facility that seems to be the center of the oddities - in the original, another dimension, in "Dark", some kind of time travel.

In Stranger Things, the facility is a secretive Government complex, which is fitting. Who is not paranoid that the American Government is up to secret unsavory stuff? The whole world can relate to that, not only Americans. But in "Dark" we have at the center a... nuclear power plant. What's so intriguing about that? Nuclear power plants even allow kids to visit, at least in my country. Seriously, in 2017 who is freaked out about nuclear power? It seems that Germans are. They made a commitment to phase out all nuclear while drastically reducing their carbon emissions. Which makes as much sense as deciding to shed 50 pounds while increasing your caloric intake. Doable with a lot of exercise, but not exactly the most practical plan.

Of course fans of Stranger Things who are anxiously awaiting season 3 will not mind watching an European quasi-remake in the meanwhile. And there is a lot going on for "Dark": mood, photography, soundtrack, acting, characters, nothing falls short of its American matrix. It doesn't surpass Stranger, but matches. You just have to find a way to be scared of nuclear power. I've only watched the first 2 episodes, and frankly the series will have to try harder from now on.

Overall series review
Top_Dawg_Critic2 August 2020
An overhyped obscure slow sci-fi soap opera

The conceptual idea was genius, but the execution far from brilliant.

For starters, I'm shocked by how many bogus reviews there are for every single episode. Next, the three seasons should've only been two. The writers milked the story to its fullest with a lot of filler and little "sensible and logical" substance. Sure there were some mind bending plots, but again, overdone to the point of constant confusion, with plot and technical issues galore. It's good to give an audience some challenges with a complex story, but when it's obvious they go overboard, the story becomes annoying. I cringed each time I heard "he/she lied to me" or "you must trust me". And what was it with Jonas' stupid plain expression throughout the entire third season? The best part of this series was the cinematography, music, and acting - for the most part. Directing was decent, but the writing was an over-dramatic convoluted mess trying to pass itself off as intellectual writing.

This series gave me de ja vu itself :P
nafeofb214023 May 2018
A complete mixture of Stranger Things and Twin Peaks. So much so that I can pinpoint exactly what influences were plucked from each: Boy goes missing and goes to a mysterious place while his mother yells at police to find him-stranger things Dark mysterious cave-twin peaks High school aged characters-both Missing/dead person had coke on them when they died or needed to pay for coke-twin peaks Wife with unavailable husband has an affair with married man-twin peaks (Norma and Ed) Forest is central to plot and action-twin peaks Central characters are police officers-both A character says "It's happening again"-twin peaks Character romantic relationships central to storyline-twin peaks It's just ok, it held my attention enough for me to be interested in seeing where it goes from here, but these similarities are unbearably obvious.
