"Hell" was without doubts the best episode of the fifth season of Vikings, atleast in the week that was aired. I had chills in so many moments of the battle that i couldn't possible think in a better way to express my thoughts about this episode than with the word "outstanding." The soundtrack was perfect and the fight scenes were amazing, a truly masterpiece!

The Battle of Wessex
claudio_carvalho6 January 2019
In Kattegat, the insane and evil Ivar burns the Seer´s corpse, covering up his murder. Bishop Heahmund has a dream and renounces his love for Lagherta in the name of God. Ubbe plans the Battle of Wessex, and the Saxons win King Harald Finehair and the Northmen but with one important loss. Meanwhile Queen Judith tortures one conspirator and finds who the leader that wants to overthrow her son Alfred is.
"Hell" is another great episode of "Vikings" with a full of action show. Ivar is absolutely lunatic and easily manipulated Freydis. The Battle of Wessex as OK considering the budget for a TV show. The loss of the confused Bishop Heahmund will not be important since Judith knows who as the leader of the conspirators and this will certainly be the most important part of the next episode. My vote is eight.

This is the first 10/10 i have given this season! Season 5 have been a letdown from previous seasons and mostly average with a few standout moments! One of those are the battle in this episode! The cinematography was amazing and the battle was visualy stunning and emotional! Way better than episode 10! Perhaps one of the best battles in the series! First episode in season 5 where time just flew by.
I cant understand why this episode has 8,7,i believe its in the top 5 episodes of the series

Cinematography 10/10 Screenplay 10/10 Music 10000/100...King Haralds roars with the music of Trevor Morris before the charge gives you multiple goosegumps...Yes i dont agree with the death of Bishop cause for me it was the only new character that was interesting but he get a worthy death.

Why the Vikings hate for this episode?
Although not a classic, I thought it was pretty darn good: I liked Floki solving a murder, Hvitserk on the trail of a murderer, and a very good battle.
Ubbe tutoring Alfred the Great on how to be a warrior - yeah, that worked! And the catapault training.
Now - Heahmond - we know in real life he died in battle, so this was coming. This was one of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers' better roles, as far as I'm concerned.
What happens to Lagertha, the unluckiest woman in love ever? Well, she's irresistible, so it shouldn't be long before her next boyfriend (or girlfriend!) comes along.
Last, I can't wait for the weaselly blonde guy posing to be Ragnar's long-lost son to be unmasked, and get his. Maybe another Blood Eagle is in order.

This is the best episode in the season so far for the most important reasons, the battle is excellent in terms of photography and representation and the great shock that took place and also was built for future events interesting as happened with Alfred and Wistrick I hope that do not disappoint in the coming episodes and be the end of the season good

This review is to say don't give up on Vikings. The two prior episodes, in particular, appeared to be sliding this story down the spiral. Non sequential story, beautifully crafted. For me, the weakest link in the Ivar character. His one dimensional screaming has given way to cartoon villain. I can't wait until he ties his maiden to the railway tracks. Anyhow, this would've been a 10 if Ivar was not in it!
Hell

The reality is the battle would have been more attritional with both sides forming behind shield walls. However Vikings has never set itself up as a series based entirely on historical facts and has loosely used history for entertainment.
And I have to say this episode was so entertaining, with the battle one of the best I have seen on a TV series.

I was almost giving up on this show because of the horrible overacting Jonathan Rhys Meyers aka Bishop Heahmund. I never understood why he got so much screen time.
People saying that he saved this season should stick to soap operas and not review shows at all.
I can now rest my mind and continue watching this show, hoping for more viking adventures and more Bjorn Ironside! Every scene he is in makes this a better show.

It's a cover-up

They killed the show's best actor, to cover-up all the bad acting.
The downward spiral has gone on for so long, I'm not sure if this was just another bad episode or if it was a good episode and I've grown weary of the series.
The acting and mumbled speech have me ready to stop watching for the remainder of the season. It's renewed for next season, I'll hope it's better then.

They killed the wrong person.

Ragnar's death affected the show heavily, and since then the show haven't got its pace yet. Lord Heahmund was the only means of saving this horrible season. Lagertha suddenly became useless, Bjorn talks but does nothing, Ubbe tries to be like his father, and Ivar suddenly turned into this ignorant villain, unaware of the things happening before him, YOUR WIFE CHEATED ON YOU GET THAT INTO YOUR THICK SKULL.
this show is dead.
The best episode this season

The over acting Bishop is finally retired. One of the best moments were seeing him die and he still managed to overact it.
The battle scene has been like the others lately...cinematic and dramatic yet disappointing, gone the days of shield wall and tactical fighting which were 100 times better and would have been really good in this episode with the introduction of the catapult.
Less pointless squabbling in this episode than previous ones.
Still a far cry from early seasons but better effort since the show had been going downhill with bad writing and cartoonish characters

The negative reviews really surprise me its like everybody is a EXPERT on Norse and English history all of the sudden.
Again if you expect to see 100% accuracy then you need to wake up because that's just impossible its based on a saga that was translated 100 times and where written around the 14th century about events that happened between the 7 and 9th century.
In my opinion they did a great job and in this episode they really showed it again the acting was great the way the battle scene was shot was just fine they gave the bishop a worthy death according to the Saxon chronicles he actually DIED during this battle ,
Cant wait for the next episode !
AND NO THE LAST KINGDOM IS NOT A BETTER SHOW its just a different show and not based on the NORSE sagas BUT the Saxon chronicles

Yes, title says it all, thats what I think, the pacing of the battle was refreshing, I havent seen a battle like that. And the soundtrack was gorgeous, its was just the right amount of everything. I recommend everyone to watch this episode! I think it was better than the GoT battles aswell. Love the team for this <3

Warning: Spoilers
First, after 3 episodes of nothing going on with Flokiville, we thankfully are shown nothing there. At least that portion of this episode was perfect.
Next, in the land of Ivarville, we have Ivar still acting dumb/crazy as his wife plays the part of deceptor. And poor Hvitserk has to play the part of "What have I got myself into?" Be careful who you vote for! I'm sick of Ivar. I don't like his acting. I don't like his character. And all that's happening in Ivarville is garbage.
And last, we are in England getting ready for the battle between Harald and Alfred. Heahmund had a bad dream so he renounces his love for Lag. And Lag is all sad. Soap anyone? Ubbe tells the non-actor Alfred to trust him and himself. Ubbe is trying but he's no Ragnar. Bjoke and Torvi do nothing. Beyond the little scene with Heah, Lag also does nothing. They're just posing at this point. Harald and his army are nearby. Ubbe goes to negotiate, asking Harald how much he want to go away. Magnus the non-actor shows up at Harald's camp and wants to join him. I wonder where Mag learned how to fight. Magic? Ubbe tricked Harald, he wasn't looking to negotiate but to stall for enough time to prepare the battle field. Real boring scenes here. Schole! I feel bad for Harald. He's one of the only good actors left on this show.
Ok, so now we are at the battle field. And it's lame. Back and forth we see/hear a speech from non-actor Alfred in red lipstick and ketchup on his face, trying his best Braveheart. Harald's army heads to the battlefield and it's all darkened. Alf lights up the field basically trapping Har, but rather than continue with the catapult flames they clash. Olavsonn gets shot in the head with an arrow that aspirin will not fix. Say goodbye, we hardly knew him. Mag, is all of a sudden a super Viking warrior. Amazing. Heahmund is unhorsed, kills a bunch of people. Then out of nowhere he gets shot with like, 47 arrows. Gunnhild, Olav's wife, finishes Heah off, as Lag watches in Sadface. Gunn cuts Bjoke's face and then she's captured. Why not just finish her off? Dumb. Harald takes off with his new buddy "Take my word for it I'm the son of Rag" Mr. Mag. Lag disappeared. I suspect she was transported to the Enterprise. Or her contract negotiations fell apart and she needed a Non Kill Exit.
After the Braveheart speech, Alf is getting drunk at his celebration party when his mother tells him, after she pulled an unauthorized dental surgery on a conspirator, that the leader of the conspirators is his brother Aethelred. Take a look at Alf's non-acting face as he tries to look concerned or something at Aethelred. I forgot to mention Aeth saved Alf's life on the battlefield, just to add to the drama. What will Alf do? And why should we care? Cheap, stay tuned.
This was a joke. A bad joke. Not in a funny way. Sad in fact. Best part was the Floki segment that did not exist. The clown show with Ivar was more filler, more repetition from the past few episodes. England a complete joke. Best part was some of the battle scenes. But even that was weak. Olav gets an arrow to the head. Fine. Heah's death was a joke. Mr. Batman voice when he first got on the scene was interesting, not great, but some depth. This half of the season he was all washed up in dirty soap opera with his nonsense love affair with Lag "I'd go to hell for you, to I renounce you" - real stupid. Alf turns into a fighter overnight. And we get his conspiring brother Aeth saving his life. This is all to paint by numbers stuff.
Poor acting. Poor writing. Poor battle. There's just nothing left. This show is now dead. A cheap copy of its former self. It's like an original band playing amateur bad cover tunes of bands they first inspired.

One of the top battles of the whole show
baikers26 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The battle is what makes this episode. Season 5 has alot of problems and many skippable episodes, this aint one of them.
The battle is a masterclass of cinematogrophy, music and dramatic effect blening in together with aftershots of Alfred talking. Harald's battle cry speech made my sking have goosebumps, aswell as the charge of the two armies against eachother.
Alfred's actor shows off his acting skills to a top level with the speech after the battle. Well done.
Killing off Heahmund was a stupid move from the showriters, the charecter was only starting to become intersting and someone I could root for.
Even so, the death of Heahmmund had a huge emotional impact because of how he died, screaming out to Lagertha, showing her that she was more important to him than God. The death itself is well done, just not at the right time.
