Minami Kamakura High School Girls Cycling Club

Warning: Spoilers
The title of this twelve part anime series tells you most of what you need to know about it; it is about the members of the cycling club at the Minami Kamakura High School for girls. Maiharu Hiromi has recently moved to Kamakura and as she cycles to school she meets Akizuki Tomoe, a more proficient cyclist. Soon the two of them are friends and along with other fans of cycling they form a school cycling club. Together they go to the local bike shop and discuss what bikes they should get; take part in a couple of races and explore their home town and later go further afield. During their various rides they discuss optimum riding positions and riding techniques. Each episode ends with a live action segment dedicated to telling you what to look for in a bike and more tips.

Series about school clubs are pretty common but most are more about the characters than the activity; here, even though the characters are still important, there is a lot of information about cycling. At times it feels like it is trying to educate the viewer about the joys of cycling and how to get the most of it as much as telling the story. That said the characters are fun to watch and the cycling tips are including in a way that fits in with the story. The characters are likable and the animation is good; the backgrounds made me wish I had that sort of scenery to cycle through; they were beautiful. Overall I'd certainly recommend this series.

Warning: Spoilers
(Note: I don't know if I would consider my post a "spoiler," but to be safe I am labeling it as such since I delve into what makes this show stand out to me compared to similar genre Anime, such as "Long Riders.")

I was surprised when I came across this Anime, and I am glad I gave it a chance.

What appeals to me most about this show is that it gives real tips regarding bicycling--from riding styles, to merchandise purchases, and the episodes I watched had life footage of tips for newbies as a helpful guide (such as finding the hole in a flat tire).

Because I had watched this show first, it was a letdown for me (from the first episode) when I tried to watch "Long Riders." (which, the show may be okay for some people--but I liked the realistic edge that "Minami Kamakura Koukou Joshi Jitensha-bu" set up in their series).

This is a show I would recommend for almost anyone who has an interest in Anime, bicycling, is a girl, and who is lighthearted about shows with a simpler plot (such as this one).

Honestly, some of the tips at the end of the episodes actually taught me some skills...and I am an adult woman. But that is why I like this show.
