Only an 8.2 on IMDB?? Or did I like it too much?
TheFirst016 July 2020
I really expected this episode to be slow, but it has everything in it. A good premise for the show, character development in just a pilot episode, the side-mission being resolved with a plot twist, and an ending with a hook.

Good Start To A Promising Show.
starker31 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Bill Hader leads a great cast (especially Henry Winkler who is on the money) in this Hollywood based satire. The premise is unlikely sure, but acting does attract an odd assortment of humans. Why not a contract killer going through an existential crisis? The choice of scenes done by the class is especially hilarious..and accurate.

Wonderfully above average, violence doesn't come without humor.
CallMeTheDoctor23 April 2019
I didn't expect this show to have a stable plot as I went in almost completely blind (having only read the summary of the plot), and what a wonderful surprise I got when this first episode turned out to be better than I expected. The humor is a bit dark but the show has its wholesome moments as well, the few bits of violence are well made and as it's said in the trivia: it's not romanticizing any of the gore. Give this pilot a watch if you want well executed humor with tiny bits of realistic violence.

Darker kind of comedy but worth it
tanguayderek3 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
From the opening scene showing a dead man in gory detail to the deadpan face of Bill Hader in front on Henry Winkler, I really see a tonne (Canadian so I don't know if US spells it that way but if not - ton) of potential in this one. Hooked on the writing and the rich subtleties such as the scene read through on stage from one the best screenplays by Quinten Tarantino, True Romance, which most would have missed I think. White boy day has arrived as Gary Oldman would say. Will adjust rating as the season progresses but 8 is about all anyone will get out of me for a first episode...that is where I put Breaking Bad after watching the build up premiere.

Feels fresh and unique!
and_mikkelsen24 April 2023
So I finally descided to give this show a chance and so far i am glad I did! It immidiatly captures your attention with its unique approach that feels fresh in an abondale of TV shows where it sometimes feel you are just watching the same thing! So far this show does not feel like that!

The story is nothing huge, but the characters makes up for it as well as how well it manages to blend dark humor, light moments, drama and great acting! All this could feel overwhelming.. but It doesn't! It knows what It is and it works!

Bill Hader is already great as Barry! You connect with him as a man struggling with pursuing his own interests or others!

Excited for more!

Chapter One: Make Your Mark
lassegalsgaard19 May 2021
I don't know if I ever picked Bill Hader as an actor-assassin, but here we are. "Barry" is a show where he plays exactly that: trying to find purpose in his life through acting while secretly working as an assassin killing people. Sounds like a fun time. Along with Alec Berg, who has worked on multiple hit shows throughout the years, Hader was announced as a co-writer and creator of the show, which began its run back in 2018. It has gained a lot of acclaim and if the pilot is anything to speak from, this is going to be a truly innovatively awesome show.

At first, I thought I was in for a slow-moving show about this guy working contracts and killing people. However, it quickly turns up the volume after an incredible opening scene and shows the audience that this is a show filled with drama and intense scenes. The show does a great job of taking Barry's main job as an assassin and pairing the intense nature of it with the acting class that he takes, and it almost seems like Barry is more frightened by standing on stage as a mere scene partner than putting a bullet through a guy's brain. Not only is that brilliant storytelling, but it's a great way of getting us into the mindset of this character, which is a very twisted one. I didn't expect Bill Hader to make an impact like that out-of-the-gate, but he actually gives a great performance that captures that feeling of desire that his character is walking around with inside. It's being believable displayed to the audience without trying to forcible make the guy sympathetic. He's clearly not a great guy, but we still can't help but feel for him. The episode kinda seems like it could have easily been a one-off due to its sense of finality at the end, but that just says to me that they know how to make the show without the need for setting up a lot of stuff. At least not yet. Also, can we just accept that Henry Winkler is a national treasure? Because that's just a fact.

"Chapter One: Hit Your Mark" definitely hit the mark and shot the show off to a great start. Even though it felt like a good deal of finality was given, I can't wait to see what the writers have come up with for the next episode, which is currently queue'd up and ready to go.

I think I'm going to like this series
nancyldraper2 June 2019
I had heard about this series (it kicked up a lot of award attention) so I'm finally giving it a watch. The Entertainment industry has a bad habit of self-congratulating itself for productions that mirror themselves back to themselves (I mean BIRD MAN? Are you kidding me? What an exercise in self-consuming, self-justifying, self-indulgent hubris!), so I was a little cynical that the piece could live up to its hype. But, this has a unique premise which is always a good beginning for me. It has its own internal logic. Its comedy springs from dramatic comedy which is dependent on its own reflections on reality and those who I dwell it rather than on jokes, one-liners, gags or hyperbole - another plus for me. I think I'm going to like this. I give this first episode an optomistic 8 (great) out of 10. {Dramatic Comedic Criminal Behaviour}

I Need More Context to Make Up My Mind
calzonesylvia22 May 2022
In a directorial way, this pilot is quite a success. The framing is good, the acting is great, the sometimes contrasting lighting adds weight to the story and the score blends with the plot and fits the tone.

As for that plot, I must see further episodes to fully develop my thoughts on this one. Nevertheless, the plot of this episode is well-delivered; the decision to dump the viewer into the story with no context whatsoever creates an intrigue, and the decision to have the protagonist explain the context of his life current with a monologue occurs naturally.

Hopefully, this show delivers on its potential.

Mr. Cousineau

Warning: Spoilers
1. Barry goes to LA 2. Barry wants to act 3. Barry kills gang members

I've heard about Barry for a long time and I am so glad that I finally got to it. This was one of the best pilots I've watched so far. The premise of a depressed middle-age hitman is hilarious in itself. It's a satirical take on Veteran mental health but Bill Hader embodies this role even better. It really is a show about midlife crisis but for hitmen. The whole irony lies in that he somehow found passion for acting but he definitely does not have any talent for it. I wonder if he would have found anything else other than killing interesting. The funnier part about is that his life is such an absurd one that him being candid about it looks like great acting.

I fell in love with the character right away and I am probably going to binge this all through. I know that the final season coming this month so I can watch without having to worry about losing track. Brilliant show!!

This ain't SNL
safenoe10 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Bill Hader pretty much sheds his SNL persona for good, with him directing the series opener of a hitman who takes up acting classes. Yes there's much dark humor to be sure, but I for one enjoyed seeing the acting performances at the class.

Chapter One
bobcobb30127 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Bill Hader, Stephen Root and Henry Winkler all back on TV and in the same show? That is a good combination and this was a pretty strong start.

It is very similar to Get Shorty on Epix, in more ways than one, what with the lead being a comedic actor in an almost not-comedic role. This is probably a little darker though and will mock Hollywood at a lower level, which could be fun.

I'll definitely stick with it, but it is not Curb by any stretch.

First Episode Reaction-Review [8/10]
panagiotis19934 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
My Reaction / Review for Barry Season 1 Episode 1 ''Chapter One: Make Your Mark'' (S1. E1): So this Barry guy doesn't really look like a hitman but ill have to wait and see. Barry isnt the type of dude that talks much. Seems like Barry likes the blonde girl. Seems like Barry is interested in acting but I don't see some passion yet, Barry is expressionless. Barry is going through an existential crisis. Barry is not really convincing as a hitman or an actor. Oh boy the acting teacher is about to hurt Barry's feelings. I don't see how you can combine being a hitman with being an actor. Barry will have to choose one or the other. Why did he kill the 3 guys, I thought they hired him? Maybe because he wasnt doing his job or something? Ok as a first episode it was very decent, my rating is 8/10.

Fun start into a tv show full of potential
moritzherz11 January 2023
Make your Mark introduces all the inportant characters of the show and gives a great impression of what you can expect from further episodes.

Story: The premiere has the difficult task to catch the viewers interest. Barry does a great job here introducing us to the characters. The mix of action and comedy that will follow us the whole show is great. The pacing is fabulous since you only have 30 minute episodes and not 1 hour movies.

Acting: As I watched the show the first time it was a few months after watching Dexter and I have to say that Barry reminds me of the outstanding performance of Michael C. Hall's Dexter. I love both actors and their performances. The other part of the cast is also great.

Verdict: This is a good start into the show, hopefully it can keep this quality.

A Disapointing adventure
lwsvninjaz26 March 2018
I went in excited for a weird humorous adventure and left bored and confused. An assassin wanting to be an actor? Just stupid. Not even funny either. And a stupid romance set up in the first episode.

I need more lies in my life
Mikhail634Gorbunov9 July 2022
At the very beginning, we are given directly to understand what the protagonist of the series represents for us. He's deadly, he's a lost soul, but he's also a person who has bills to pay. Meet - this is BARRY.

The series is a dark tragicomedy about the life of a hired killer, who has the opportunity to prove to himself that he is capable of not only killing "bad" people, but also of giving out his acting skills filled with life ... abstraction. But we all perfectly understand that, based on how much our hero would not like to try himself in another area, his past full of violence is unlikely to release such a person so easily.

The pilot episode may not showcase the full power of this concept, but it certainly manages to convey the message that Barry has the potential to become something big. And the creators definitely feel that they picked up a lot of interesting things in the future.

Unique
ScourgeOfImdb5 March 2024
This has gotta be one of the most interesting premises for a comedy I've ever heard. Like how on earth do you think of something like this.

To start with, the plot kicks off well and is pretty riveting straight away. There are memorable characters, which is a classic for HBO. It's dark tone and sense of humour make it for me. The suspense also lets the episode have another layer on top of its already brilliant structure. Bill Hader did an extremely good job on this one and I hope to see it get better and better. It has a lot of potential and it could go literally anywhere.

Overall, great plot and characters 8.2/10.

Lack of military advisor for details
spencer-matthew6 December 2018
Lack of military advisor on set is shown in the details. Immediately, within 2 minutes of first episode, I noticed Barry's Marine Corps ribbon rack was upside down, showing Purple Heart and Bronze Star on the bottom, when they should be on top.

#JessieRepresentation
Bumpling27 April 2022
The part where the kids were watching Jessie was the best part. Very nice.

Let me explain to you why Jessie is a good show.

Now it's basically about a wannabe actress who wants to make it in NYC but somehow ends up being a nanny for a bunch a Rich kids. Isn't that crazy! Filled with many unique characters such as Ravi, Zuri,Luke, and Emma. They get into wacky shenanigans all the time, like when Ravi got a job at the zoo which started a conflict with his brother that led to a gorilla being released in the park where Jessie is having a date with a cute guy. Now that's hilarious.
