A Great Script That Entertains
atlasmb30 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A displacement in time and space transports a younger iteration of Kelly to the Orville. The effect seems irreversible. As a result, the crew and the younger Kelly (K') are presented with a number of problems. Ed decides to withhold nothing from K', even telling her about the history of his relationship with Kelly during the last seven years.

This is an excellent script, exploring questions of morality and psychology through a sci-fi lens. My first thought was: would both Kellys learn from each other? They do, and the contrast between the two Kellys helps Ed gain a wiser perspective on his past and aging.

Maybe younger viewers don't appreciate the technical achievement of seamlessly presenting two Kellys on screen simultaneously, but I really enjoyed the way they played with that. And I enjoyed watching Adrianne Palicki create a second character through nuanced acting.

Near the end of the episode, a solution is devised which reveals an intertemporal timeline that had existed from the beginning. The "petty pace" of quotidian living has been hijacked.

The final scene points to an unexpected development that should have ramifications----even if only minor---for later episodes. I hope the writers use this opportunity to surprise us with another inspired story.

Back to romance and relationships.
safeJ19 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
After the last several excellent episodes, we're back to the romance/relationship game. Even with the time travel touch, still the same issues between Kelly and Ed. Ed's attempts to make things "right" by dating the young Kelly don't work as he had hoped.

The redeeming factor was the surprise ending. We'll probably see followup from this episode, no doubt in another season (if allowed).

After seeing this one, there's only one question:
Gernot S.19 April 2019
Why the heck are they, in all the other episodes, toning down Palickis attractivity by at least 50%?

:-D

Better, and Better, and Better
AliensReservoir19 April 2019
It is truly getting Better and Better, also each and every single episode have they own story as well as getting deeper in each and every personage.

This show allows everyone to get on the Orville without the need to have followed the 2 seasons. The writers are very good and i got hooked by the story from start to finish.

A lot of "Sci-fi Tech" "explanation" in this episode which make it also a science fiction show.

The end of this episode was... I won't spoil it, you need to watch the full episode ;)

I loved this episode!

Wow! Just wow!

Warning: Spoilers
Totally fascinating episode. Whenever time travel is the subject, there's always a lot to explore plot wise and personally. The "What if" factor specifically. There was kind of a Back To the Future type scenario to this episode. The end completely blew my mind! Do yourself a favor and watch it and don't give up until the last scene! My jaw literally dropped!

I Love The Social Aspect Of This Show
imaginelovinglife19 April 2019
I love the social aspect of this show. Instead of focusing way too heavily on survival and war that Star Trek and other Scifi series does, this show tries to tell a story of what it is like to live on a star ship. There will be romance, growing, hardships and daily routines people go through.

I could relate to the story in the present Kelly's point of view. You have a lot of fears like dating, trying things out, and revisiting old past mistakes. There is this girl that is practically you that has no fear and wants to jump or take risks. It is like seeing a being that is doing the things that you want to do and also making the mistakes that you fear of making. I am looking far more into the story but that is how it was to me.

It was a good scifi story that made me think and the story entertained me very well at the same time..

On par, maybe even better than City on the Edge of Forever

Warning: Spoilers
This was an amazing episode. It also left the door open for a revisit now that Ed Mercer's timeline seems ruined. The scenes with Kelly and her younger self were very maturely handled too. Janet Lin should win an Emmy. This is the type of episode that can teach you how to live life a little better too. Bortus dancing was hilarious.

I didn't think this show could get better. Fox should hire twice as many writing staff/crew so we can see 2 episodes a week.

Loved to see Ed's sense of humour return. He may be the Captain but he's still a human being. and a kid at heart.

Seth did a great job of almost reverting to his younger self around youner Kelly. And the make-up and wardrobe were spot on to make her look 7 years younger.

Every sci-fi shows does the time travel thing, but this one was enjoyably different. Absolutely loved it.

Have to give this 10 stars to counter dissers!

Warning: Spoilers
Normally I'm not thrilled with time travel plots. There are always so many questions on how the possible chain of events in "reality" can be affected in such situations, that I usually get a headache trying to analyze the potential consequences.

In this story, I just tried to sit back, relax, and go with the flow. In this way I was able to enjoy the story as presented .... Until the ending. If you watch this episode, you will know what I mean.

Will the Orville explore the possible consequences of the seeming change in events initiated by the "young" Kelly when she is returned to her original place in time? I don't know, but maybe the next episode will have something to say about that.

In any case, I found this episode very entertaining, including the brief episodes of humor. Especially at the end with Bortus and Klydon dancing at the club. I guess Moclans don't do too much dancing on their home planet. LOL

Fine episode
gen8619 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In all honesty if this happens in real life I bet they would do a threesome. Once in a lifetime chance.Missed opportunity here... Otherwise can't wait for the next episode where the reality is changed due to young Kelly's decision in the end of this episode. Guess the memory wipe wasn't super effective huh....What will happen? Captain wont be even on the ship? Kelly will be captain? Stay tuned for more space drama!! On the more picky side, I wonder how the Kaylon ship missed them, you could clearly see it's a ship even under the ice. You could see the markings and the colors under the ice, are Kaylons blind :) ? Anyway, after they have discovered time travel and even fine tuned time travel with such a precision that they can turn back the person to the exact point , this unravels a new step for humanity and other civilizations, it's like the creation of fire or electricity, it's a milestone of this era, imagine the opportunities it offers, it's absolutely mind blowing, they should have paid way more attention to this and make it a huge deal, also share the news with everyone from the headquarters. They just reacted as if someone found a new flavor of chewing gum....yey... I would really love if the Orville pay a bit more attention to the scientific part of the show, it's way too focused on drama and human relations....

Cute but Pretty Uninspiring
Hitchcoc16 July 2022
As soon a time travel becomes a part of the game, there is too much to explain. All actions have consequences. So what it the pat thing to do. Erase memories. Have a method of bringing someone forward and then sending them back where they left off. Of course, the science is all made up. The younger Kelli is like a high school brat, her hormones running the show. It was fun, but the people drooling over it? I don't get it.

Can we go back to scifi please?
Chandelier-4957921 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Yet another episode that focused on a relationship like we had quite a few of already. Not only that, this couple's relationship has had plenty of screentime so far in my opinion. Unworthy chapter of the Orville especially since at the end of the episode nothing in their relationship has changed. I would like more space exploration (no more moclans please...), hostile alien species, diplomatic troubles, science gone wrong, political difficulties or a combination of all that. The Orville did deliver some of this but lingers in the relationship angle alot. Wouldnt be so bad if it explored the relation of human/aliens or between different aliens. For example I did really like what they did with the krill women and Ed Mercer. If i wanted to watch a show about human relations i would watch friends or something.

The ultimate do-over
MrGoog19 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
******SPOILER ALERT******

In the early stages of this series' production, Seth MacFarlane described the series this way: "It's a show about relationships. It's a show that takes large-scale, grand science fiction premises and puts them in a framework that makes them about people, which to me is what the best science fiction is all about." This episode deals with some of the most basic questions asked about relationships: What if I had another chance? Could I have saved this relationship? Or did everything turn out for the best? Thanks to quantum physics, Kelly and Ed get to explore those questions (but without any intervention from Sam Beckett or Al Calavicci).

As Ed and Kelly share a drink after duty, Ed says that he's still open to resuming a relationship with her. But she isn't. Kelly tells him, "We've become a good team and really good friends."

Isaac has been continuing and expanding Dr. Aronov's experiments with the temporal acceleration device ("Old Wounds"). In his work with John, Isaac has gone far beyond aging a banana - he may have found a way to time-travel. Suddenly, the Orville is hit by a massive gravitational wave, probably from a collapsing star. After the wave passes, Isaac sees Kelly in Science Lab 1 - but, at the same time, Kelly is on the Bridge! (I thought about Curly Howard of the 3 Stooges saying, "I'm not me!")

Here is when we saw something interesting: the opening sequence of the series was abbreviated, showing no list of the cast. That's when I thought, "Does this mean all of the regular cast vanish for this episode because of that wave?" That was a clever move by MacFarlane. We saw the regular cast listing at the start of Act One.

Claire examines the Kelly who popped in (I'll refer to her as Kelly-2) and finds that she is Kelly Grayson, but 7 years younger. After Kelly-1 and Kelly-2 meet in Sickbay (Kelly was so freaked out, she was beside herself!), Isaac and John find the cause. The gravitational wave interacted with the temporal acceleration device, and Kelly-1 was closest to the phenomenon. Also, as has been theorized in quantum physics, her thoughts also affected the interaction, and she was thinking about her first date with Ed 7 years earlier. Ed and Kelly-1 discuss what to tell Kelly-2 about the past 7 years, and Ed decides to tell Kelly-2 the truth. As Kelly-2 is overwhelmed by this weird situation, Isaac and John believe that the time-travel incident can't be reproduced because the gravitational wave was a random event. So, apparently, Kelly-2 is stuck in 2420.

Ed, Kelly-1, and Talla help Kelly-2 establish her own life in 2420. Kelly-2 resumes her career as Lieutenant Kelly Grayson of the Fleet's Astronomy Department. Kelly-2 even tells Kelly-1 that she would like to be posted on the Orville. Kelly-1 approves, so now the ship has Lieutenant Grayson and Commander Grayson ("I'm not me!").

Kelly-2 tells Ed that she had a great time on their first date in 2413 and wants a second date. Ed feels this is a weird situation (there's an understatement!) and consults with Kelly-1. Since Kelly-1 reiterates that Ed has no further chance with her, Ed starts dating Kelly-2, trying to rewrite his own past. Afterward, the Kellys have a disagreement over Ed, with Kelly-2 telling Kelly-1, "You've made my future a disappointment."

2 Kaylon Spheres approach the area, but the Orville evades them - for now.

When Ed tells Gordon about his great second date with Kelly-2, Gordon reminds his friend that his first relationship with Kelly - especially the divorce - made him an emotional wreck, and he doesn't want to see history repeat itself.

Kelly-2 invites Ed, Gordon, and Talla to a holographic disco which she programmed. Kelly-2, Talla, Yaphit, Bortus, and Klyden have a wild time on the dance floor, but Ed and Gordon just sit with their drinks and complain about the loud music, like old men. Meanwhile, Kelly-1 confides in Claire, wondering if she messed up her life. Claire remarks, "Goals change. Things become more beautifully complicated."

Then comes the Big Moment: Ed and Kelly-2 in bed. But Ed hesitates, telling Kelly-2, "I've already felt all of this with someone else." He also says about Kelly-1, "We've evolved together and I still love her."

The Kaylon Spheres return, but Kelly-2 has an idea which comes from her Astronomy experience: take the Orville to Vendek 2, which has co-variant rings of ice blocks; then get close to a block and spray the hull with water, which would freeze instantly and attach the ship to the block; then shut down all power until the Spheres leave. The plan works, and Kelly-1 thanks Kelly-2 for the quick thinking. Also, Kelly-2 apologizes for her rude behavior.

John and Isaac may have found a way to return Kelly-2 to 2413. They would use the temporal acceleration device and the ship's quantum drive to produce a gravitational wave and a time-travel opening. The problems: it will put a huge strain on the engines; and Kelly-2 will need a memory wipe, which could damage her brain. But Kelly-2 is confident that it will work because it must have worked already - because no one had remembered Kelly-2's visit. Although the Orville comes dangerously close to exploding, the plan works.

Kelly-2 finds herself in her apartment in New York City - and in 2413, the morning after her date with Ed. Ed calls her and asks for a second date. But she declines the offer, telling him, "I just don't see us working out." Now history has been changed! What will be the fallout?

10/10 just for the dance scene with Chad L Coleman alone.
jeffpeek22 June 2022
I've had a few "spit out my coffee" moments with Orville. But being a huge Expanse fan, and The Wire, some of the scenes with Chad L Coleman are outrageously funny. The "Come home, I've made pudding" line, and most recently the dance scene in this episode.

Such a well written show.

Time Travel the best
shellybellyclarke24 April 2019
I really love this show, right from the beginning. I won't tell people what to or not too watch its entirely up to them, but just give it a try. What have you got to lose. Just one more thing, the time travel aspect can be brilliant if it is done properly, just look at Babylon 5 episodes, Babylon squared, War Without End Part 1 and 2.

Chewing Broken Glass
d.rust20 April 2019
The Aronov Time Cone passing through an abrupt gravity gradient creates an unusual situation: quantum entanglement draws an earlier version of Kelly into the present.

"We're going to have tiresome split screen effects, just like we've seen on other shows!", you moan.

Except for the fact that Adrianne Palicki is such a good actress that from the moment Kelly-2 came on screen, I was saying to myself -- that's who? Is that Kelly? It kind of looks like her, is it her? It wasn't until the two versions were on screen together that I accepted her as Kelly.

Other than the visual cues as to who was who, Kelly-2 always looked younger, she seemed lighter, she was definitely more fun.

And then there's Ed. Poor emotionally crippled Ed. Poor relationship roadkill Ed. Is there a second chance for Kelly and Ed? He wants to, she wants to and it looks like it could happen when an incoming plot complication shows up on ship's sensors before insertion can be accomplished.

Decisions have to be made about Kelly-2 and they arrive at a plan. Will it solve their glass-crunching problem?

ROM COM FUTURE DESTINY
douglasjordane11 June 2022
THE WRITING IS EXCEPTIONALLY TASTEFUL (NOT CHEESY) -CONSIDERING THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE SCI-FI AND NOT ROMANTIC COMEDY, AS A GENRE. PERHAPS, MOREOVER, A DRAMA ABOUT A FUTURE OF SPACE TRAVEL, EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY OF STRANGE NEW WORLDS IS LAUGHABLE IS SOME PECULIAR WAY! ALTERNATIVELY, A SCIENCE FICTION FUTURE IS NOT AS CLEVERLY PLOTTED AS ONE WOULD IDEALISTICALLY DREAM TO MANIFEST. PERHAPS THIS IS THE PERFECT FUTURE TENSE OF SPACE SCI-FI.

SETH MACFARLANE YOU ALMOST HAD ME SOLD UNTIL I REMEMBERED BSG (2004).

10 OF 10 STARS FOR MAKING SOME OF US SEE YOUR FUTURE AND YOUR BRILLIANCE. WE COULD ONLY HOPE FOR SUCH AN ENTERTAINING AND HAPPY FUTURE.

When they get it right, they get it right.
machrf3 October 2022
Shows and movies regarding timeline can get a bit dicey. Some work well, some hide their inconsistences well, and make for a good story. This is one of those that works well with an inconsistency that may or may not be there. Will we find out in a future episode? I bet we will not, but I am hopeful they will return to this story in some fashion in future episodes.

For those that may think it does have an inconsistency, it all depends on the timeline. (without obviously giving away one way for them to get out of this.)

The story progresses in a natural way that comes across authentic and a bit more friendly than how STNG handled it. This episode has a lot more heart and if I dare say so, has more ST TOS flavor than any of the later ST's.

Rainbow-coloured drinks
Macetheace507 December 2021
1. Is there a recipe for those rainbow-coloured drinks?

2. Not a bad episode but it borrows from many time travel shows.

Time travel problem occurs, fans sit and wait as a solution is developed.

And everything returns back to normal in the end.

Turned into a soap opera
efd-1046722 April 2019
Too many episodes involving internal crew characters and their problems, these guys rarely explore or investigate anything, starting not to care, they simply fly around aimlessly analysing each other's personality disorders, not science fiction more Days of Our Lives (In Space).

Not ANOTHER relationship story...where is exploring space, new species, mysteries?
sumtim3s00n19 April 2019
Its only second season and we've had more than dozen relationships stories. Not to mention Ed and Kelly were done like 3times already, this is the 4th if not the fifth. And on top of that there were all the other ones the doctor and all her "lovers" from the slob to the robots, never mind the artificial ones, then theres Gordon and the Maklans... Man, enough of this. Sure Star Trek always had the relationships and explored human relations but not constantly and repeatedly,on and on and on again through this boring romatic relationship drama. Especially one thats been done like 5 times already, the EXACT one. Awful writing. The true sci-fi adventurous angle of the show has been completely put aside. Sure, one can weakly defend that it is "sci-fi" what has lead to this result in the episode but that is some weak sauce. I miss them going into the unknown, new cultures, unexpected encounters and problems. The fact is, this Star Trek show has about as much of Star Trek DNA as Celebrity Chef.

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow
bobcobb30121 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Seeing Ed Mercer mock time travel was hard to believe considering how many times Family Guy has used that plot. Nevertheless, that's a small part of my complaints about this episode. The premise just seemed too outlandish and really boring here.

I have no interest in the Kelly/Ed relationship, so adding another Kelly doesn't really help get me there.
