Unique film on a really original subject
edwardsjh12 May 2023
I saw this documentary at a film festival in London. I didn't expect much, but I was very pleasantly surprised. The subject of the film was not something I would have ever thought of as an issue.

It was very informative and demonstrated a beautiful relationship between man and his dog. Heartwarming, and a really nice David vs Goliath story. The filmmaker is also a veterinarian and a dog trainer, so she is knowledgable on this subject and has done lots of research for the film.

Great soundtrack and good pace with the editing. It keeps your interest the whole way through, even if you are not particularly interested in dogs.

An interesting documentary about a fight against the Icelandic system

The Underdog tells the story of Hilmar Egill Jónsson's incredible struggle with the Icelandic system to get permission for the dog Rjómi to move with his family from Norway to Iceland. Truly worth watching Director Freyja Kristinsdóttir, who is also a veterinarian, observes this five-year struggle with the system, but she also draws attention to the prejudice and ignorance of the Icelandic authorities regarding dogs. In addition to following Hilmar's struggle very well, we get a review of the struggle of dog owners in Iceland throughout time and very interesting interviews with experts on how to assess whether dogs are dangerous or not.

Touching story on a subject that deserves more recognition

Rjómi is a captivating and emotional documentary that will deeply resonate with dog lovers and those who appreciate stories of resilience in tough times. It's a powerful reminder of how far we're willing to go to protect and cherish our loved ones, and the importance of questioning unfair systems in pursuit of what we believe is right.

As I watched the story unfold, I was moved by the profound love and unwavering determination shown by the family. The bond between them and their beloved dog, Rjómi, was so strong that it touched my heart.

The filmmaker, who is a veterinarian, deserves sincere praise for bringing this film to life. By shining a light on the often ignored challenges faced by dog owners when dealing with bureaucracy, Freyja has highlighted an important issue. Her dedication to raising awareness and starting conversations about the difficulties faced by pet owners is commendable. The film reminds us of the importance of compassion and understanding within society.

Rjómi showed me the incredible power of love and the strength that comes from fighting for what we believe in. It left me feeling inspired and grateful for the deep connections we share with our animal companions. It was a truly touching and uplifting experience that will stay with me long after the film ended.

Fun and enlightening story about a modern day fight against the system

So fun to watch and inspiring, the story about Rjómi and his family will inspire you and surprise. Seeing how bad the system and it's beaurocrats can treat regular citizens was surprising and a big reveal for me.

Film is a documentary about Rjómi and hís family who are forced to consider wether or not they should abandon one of their family members, their beloved dog when they are looking into moving back to Iceland.

The story is captivating, fun, sad and empowering at the same time and will give you a glimpse into ordinary lives that must pull together and try to put an end to government bullying.

Watch the film to see how that unfolds.
