Episode 1

Warning: Spoilers
Give Ricky Gervais credit. If you have seen The Office, Extras or Derek you know that he does not just come to TV for the sake of coming to TV. He has a fresh idea with every series.

Granted, being a jerk might not be an entirely original concept, this show manages to blend the idea of a tragic loss with real and genuine reaction. People don't just move on immediately or after X amount of days.

After Life captures that while giving us some of the typical office co-worker kind of humor we expect from the show's star.

Solid start and looking forward to more of it.

Don't Expect a Lot of Laughs
Sonatine9712 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Any fan of Gervais will know he doesn't pull any punches with most of his TV sitcoms. Doesn't matter if its The Office, Derek or Extras, he will always bring in a storyline that will pull you away from the laughter and comedy for just the briefest of moments, and focus on something far more hard hitting.

In the case of this show, the balance between comedy and his brand of drama, is somewhat reversed. Don't be expecting 20 odd minutes of laughs, and a couple of minutes of grim reality because you will be sorely disappointed.

I must admit to going into this first episode looking for the slap-stick, albeit dark humored comedy given the subject matter of losing one's partner to cancer. But there was no laughter to be found hardly. Instead it was very much a deep-dive into the depressive, abusive and manic world of Gervais' character.

It was hard going quite frankly, and there were moments where I just wanted to give up and press the "stop" button on the remote, primarily because I was expecting some light-relief between all the doom and gloom (Derek & Extras, carried similar pathos at times, but as I mentioned earlier both shows were comedy-first and foremost)

Gervais' character is hard to love even when you consider he is now a widower. He doesn't go looking for support, and tells a lot of home-truths to people he knows and to perfect strangers in the street. He seems to think no one else can feel the same loss, and therefore will never understand. As a consequence he can do whatever he wants because for him life & happiness are distant memories.

There's one or two poignant scenes, especially when he buys a tin of food for his beloved dog. He doesn't buy anything else, not even food for himself. Instead he takes care of his dog because looking after the dog is the only reason he hasn't killed himself!

I am glad I stayed the course because it is quite an eye-opener.

This program shows in a realistic, honest, poignant way what it is like to lose someone you truly love. Ricky Gervais at his finest.

Simply Amazing

Wow! This was VERY impressive dramacomedy. It makes me cry and laugh at the same time. Everybody should watch this. Altough there are very dirty humour, great one liners and madness, there are deeper meanings of life behind all those graziness. Im stunned! This is going to emmys, im Pretty sure of that and I have watched only pilot but im still ready to be on that

Episode 1.1

Ricky Gervais looks at bereavement in this dramedy.

In this first episode; He plays Tony who works for the free newspaper, The Tambury Gazette. It is run by his brother in law who everyone takes advantage of.

Tony is loathed to call himself a journalist and since his wife Lisa died, he loathes the world.

We get a brief glimpse that he was once a happy go lucky guy but now Tony is now a misanthrope. He just wants to die and before he does, he wants to be nasty to everyone.

What might be a realistic look at bereavement and someone heading for a breakdown, it certainly had very few laughs in the first episode. What comedy there is it is the observational kind such as when Tony makes a comment about the headline of an old woman getting mugged or his co-worker Lenny who just seems to scoff all day.

Of course this is very much the style of Ricky Gervais comedy. However there is a sharpness to the issues of losing someone close to you.

After the trailer a great disappointment
Cragsidebarry11 March 2019
While clearly close to the mark, the trailer had it's funny moments and the programme looked worthwhile.

Unfortunately we struggled - and I really do mean struggled - to make it to 20 minutes into the programme. We won't be watching any more.

It's crude (read 'vulgar'), childish (read 'infantile'), and just such bad taste it appeals on not a single front. As people who've lost loved ones we find this puerile self-indulgence by Gervais to be deeply insulting.

Time to learn from Coogan, Brydon and others perhaps, Ricky?
