The real ending...

Why are people complaining about the ending of this show and giving it low stars? It's literally the ending of the real story. You guys just look dumb !!!

Good ending!

Warning: Spoilers
I actually liked the ending! If Tera has been killed I would have hated the ending, but the series ended with the right thing happening. Resolution! And as far as the women's conversation & the meeting of John's sister at the end, it was all very strange. But as they say, truth can be stranger than fiction! I loved the series overall. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time!!!

Julia Garner shows why she's in this series
ddelamaide16 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
*spoiler alert* In case anyone was wondering why the talented Julia Garner was playing in what looked like a nothing role as the younger sister, it became clear in one brilliant scene in episode 8, when she showed the fierceness and toughness that has made her a star in Ozark (and before that in The Americans). Eric Bana did his part, too.

Season 1

Warning: Spoilers
Assuming the show sticks close to the truth, even 50% true, the Newell's are horrible people - Debra, her mom, and the girls. Their ability to communicate (the daughters collaborated on the story) is horrible and Debra appears to lack any common sense. Worse, she failed to listen and protect her children. A successful business owner who had been divorced multiple times should have known to protect assets better. It is amazing that they all survived this story.

Season One Review
southdavid9 December 2020
Having never read the article, or listened to the Podcast, I came to "Dirty John" on a Netflix whim, with little more than the brief synopsis and that impressive cast to go on. I found a show that was somehow still entertaining, despite it's disturbing real life story and which was elevated by the performances of the stars.

Debra Newell (Connie Britton) meets John Meehan (Eric Bana) on a dating website and the pair hit it off immediately. Despite the reservations of both her daughters, Veronica (Juno Temple) and Terra (Julia Garner) and Nephew Toby (Kevin Zegers) the pair continue to see each other and even marry in secret. Once married the manipulation begins, as John isolates Debra from her family, installs cameras in the home and office and starts to move money around. Though initially unwilling to see it, Debra's eyes are opened when she learns of John's criminal past and addiction issues, but is she too late to extricate herself, before the real damage is done?

What might have been done in a soapy or frothy way in the hands of another creative team is, as I say, taken to another level by the quality of the cast and by the research done into the story by a multitude of writers at each stage in the production. Bana and Britton are great, they make a couple with chemistry and Bana keeps finding ways to make you forget about who his character really is, enough that you can see why Debra was taken in. Juno Temple has a deceptive amount of work to do in the series, as in the early episodes there needs to be a spoiled child element about her actions, before she sees the real danger. I did wonder why Julia Garner had agreed to play that relatively small role of younger daughter Terra, given she's proved so capable on "The Americans" and "Ozark" but it does make more sense given how the series ends.

It doesn't sit at the top tier of television drama, but it was a smartly made and entertaining series, and I'm interested to see how the anthology-isation (making words up there) works for season two.

Great series ending on a down note
chrismays17 January 2019
I really enjoyed this series but I thought this final episode was a let down. It was anticlimactic given how well they built up the rest of the series. I get that they had to go with the truth but the end felt forced and let me unsatisfied.

This Young Woman Fought Like Hell (#1.8)

Warning: Spoilers
I can't say that I didn't like the ending, it was again pretty well done. Only compared to the rest of the show it was pretty slow. The fighting scene did keep one on the edge but that was it. Of course it is true to the actual story and I don't want to say that what happened was horrible enough I just feel the ending could have been a bit better. Another thing I am asking myself is what do they plan to do with the second season? It seems the whole story has been told already.

what an awful way to end
VKintheUK-83-55276816 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Towards the end of the final episode I regretted having wasted time watching the series at all - a disappointment, nothing else. The plot had to stay true to the real-life story yet the portrayal spread over these many episodes have flopped spectacularly at the very end.

So much stupidity!
WhyFli2 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure why I watched the entire season one. The first couple of episodes were not too bad. But the show became annoying after a while.

Deb was a beautiful and intelligent woman. She had a very successful business and two lovely daughters. But she proved to be extremely stupid, yes stupid.

Dirty John was obviously using her, taking her money, not working, but she would either look the other way or forgive him or fall into his arms.

It became ridiculous. This doe-eyed, gorgeous woman refusing to see clearly, even though her very smart girls were telling her what was happening. But Deb didn't listen. Deb was in love. And her stupid mother also thought dirty John was the greatest. Oh yes, she just loved her dirty John and wasn't watching out for her daughter. Chris had to put on a stupid person

It was great to see Julia Garner, who I adore, but she wasn't quite as good in this show as I had hoped. Even her role had to put on this stupid persona. Dirty John nearly killed her, but she got lucky and ended up killing him in self-defense. But then she was so sad that she took dirty John away from his sister and his girls who couldn't stand him anyway. She seem to forget that dirty John would've killed her in an instant So stupid so sad.

An awful lot of stupidity in one season!

Such a stupid ending!
ppalotai5 August 2019
OMG! The ending was such a stupid one and the conversations between the women! Seriously?! It just shows how simple and trustful they are! At least she fought like hell and all the credit to her! Not to bring charges to Terra... meeting John's sister? What's the point in all these?!
