Generational Trauma (#5.06)
audaciousness30 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"You are so broken, Joanie."

This episode was fantastic. I loved (finally) seeing Joanie's character have much more screen-time and get fleshed out, as we were finally able to get a sense of the kind of person she's become since Alison's death. As it turns out, she's battling a lot of demons. The scene where Joanie explained to E.J. how she's terrified of being alone because of what she might do to herself was absolutely heartbreaking -- and one of Anna Paquin's best performances.

There was a lot to love here, including finally getting closure on Cole and Luisa (who made a surprise appearance in old age makeup). We found out a lot about Cole's life after Alison's passing and what his relationship with Joanie was like; and also what Joanie's relationship with Luisa was like, and how she became a "mom" to her. Joanie's relationship with Paul in present-day was an interesting one too, and the scene where she lashed out at him just in order to get him to be angry at her (a self-destructive behavior we've seen all too often in Alison before) was quite powerful and well-done. Joanie's character is certainly a complex one and quite well-written. I also adored the supermoon scene with those high-tech weather glasses, and thought it was the first actual 'sci-fi/futuristic' piece in Joanie's segment that worked well; especially because it led to the revelation for Joanie that her mother couldn't have killed herself that night. An honorable mention for E.J. too, who was a bit of a "character of convenience" put there just to move the story forward, but he did have some funny lines and a weird but memorable personality.

However, as much as this episode was complex and fascinating most of the time, there were also a few flaws in logic. For example, there were so many coincidences in this episode that it was almost hard to take it seriously. The fact that Joanie would stumble upon E.J. who just happens to be studying generational trauma *and* obsessed with her family was more than convenient, and then the fact that he knew exactly where to find Alison's (not destroyed by water damage) death report files in the abandoned police station, and then the fact that he just happened to have met Cole before and knew about his obsession with Ben Cruz. This, of course led to Joanie remembering Ben in a dream, which is actually plausible as she was not too young at the time, and her realization that Ben may have killed Alison.

Overall, this was still one of my favorite episodes of the season, and the complexity of how Joanie became so broken after Alison's death, even going as far as trying to build her life completely opposite to Alison's, was quite fascinating. I am really liking what the writers are doing with the idea of how trauma can be passed on from one generation to another, but I feel as though they could have gone about it a better way than to have E.J., a literal expert on Joanie's entire lineage just show up and guide the way for her. So, flaws in logic aside, this was a powerful, fascinating episode.

Stay on this track
hosenoggin29 September 2019
Finally this show is getting interesting again. After weeks of poor episodes, this one got me interested again. Stay on this track and forget all the convoluted directions that the show has pursued in the recent past. Please!

I hate Joanie
mandamail130 September 2019
Sorry, this weirdo scifi storyline with Joanie and rising seas and rotting strawberries is KILLING ME. It's the worst. Get back to L.A. and wrap up the story. I honestly could care less if Alison gets justice via her wanna-be Nancy Drew sociopathic daughter.

Terrible episode and boring
charlenegagliardi1 October 2019
Have always watched the affair from the start This was so boring to watch that I switched over. The whole joanie story is like watching a completely different programme that isn't related to the affair.

This show used to be exciting and racey. Now it's boring and depressive every week.

What is the point. So way off track from the rest of the show it's practically unwatchable. Who thought this was a good idea?

Way off track

I'm not a fan of the futuristic part of Joanies side of the story, that's completely deprived of feelings. It feels like an entirely different show - one I wouldn't watch - and ruins the flow of the rest of the otherwise brilliant show.

Joanie's storyline is so annoyng
fancanelokristina0151 October 2019
What is it about Joanie's storyline in this fifth season? Ugh, is so annoying. First time when is popped up I though it was some mistake, like something it doesn't belong there, and reminded me so much on Black mirror. I don't why but it was immediate association. Because everything was so dark, strange and twisted and that actress had such bad vibe. I don't know maybe is just me. But I don't like it at all. It doesn't match up with the rest of the storylines and perspectives. I was so hyped at the beginning about this new season, because I was so interested how they going to keep the story unfold without the Alison. But there it is, we got Joanie's storyline. Although I love Noah's, Helen's and Whitney's storylines in this season. O yeah, the Sierra's story is annoying too. Helen always was my favorite character, from the early beginning. She is so captivating, that actress is amazing. For that matter Alison doesn't miss me at all. I wish they made some spin-off only about Helen. Although I hate spin-offs, this one I would watch.

So incredibly off the mark. What in the world were writers thinking? A disgraceful ending to a pretty good series. Are flying saucers in next episode ?

Let's get back to present day!
ahren-433-8996397 October 2019
I'm not liking the whole Joanie futuristic story at all. It's so boring. Felt that this episode was a waste of time, wish I hadn't bothered to watch it. Hope they get back to LA and present day next episode or I'll be switching off.

Ridiculous off-course detour--yet again
Deidre-1730 September 2019
At its best, this show is riveting and emotional. At its worst, we've had things like the finale with Irene Jakob. This latest off the map detour at least has relevancy in terms of seeing all of Allison's self-absorption repeated in Joanie. If we really needed that. But otherwise it's so off point as to be ridiculous--not to mention that it's environmental hysteria at its worst. Also? Has there been a single other episode with only one viewpoint? What a freaking waste.

Worst acting EVER !!!
ahmail1312 October 2019
I love 'The Affair' and have been following it religiousely for the past 5 years, brilliant show, great plot development, good casting, coherent story line...until this?? what?? The attempnt to connect Joanie story to the rest of the series is pathetic and it breaks the natural flow. The acting is so so bad i dont even know where to start. It feels like the Michael Broun (EJ) character was created to add some comic relief to the situation but its totally not working, it feels out of place and irrelevant to the story. Not impressed with wooden acting of Anna Paquin. Hagai Levi what happened?!

Worst episode!
blade-5715 December 2019
What happened to the The Affair? This episode was completely like watching something else. Very bad acting and uninteresting storyline. Worst episode till now.

The dialog between Louisa and EJ seemed off, I found myself wanting to fast forward to get it over. Please get back to present time, this future setting is not working.

WHY?
debbiehebden3 January 2020
I just don't get why they have gone down this route? It is boring, badly acted and the story is so unrealistic. Police files left for anyone to read, prime real estate property worth nothing. And a weird obsession with strawberries. I think someone may have been binge watching Black Mirror. Joanie has to be the least likeable character of all time. Loved Alison and Cole but their story should have just been left. This is just wrong.

sure, they're building to something, but it's WAY TOO SLOW
drbarbc-526-5174667 December 2019
Why subject us to Anna Paquin's horrible acting? No matter what happens next, her blank face is ruining this show. Must be a pay-off someday for all the close-ups of Anna's expressionless face. Whatever it is, hire a better actor next time, not Paquin.

She's so bad

Very weak episode made worse by Anna Paquin. I don't mind the whole Joanie part of the story but she's just unbearable.

What the heck?!
shannonadams17 September 2021
Ok I've binge watched this show on the last couple months and loved it. Until season 5. What is with the futuristic Joanie stuff?? It ruins the whole show. I actually fast forward through those scenes. I'm sure I'm missing something but it's not worth watching.

Why Go All Futuristic Now?
covertjby8 July 2021
The series has a great story line if you can get past all the frivolous in you face sex. No prude here but I know what we do behind closed doors.

The Joannie character makes me cringe every time she makes an appearance. At first I thought I had missed something and that this was a trailer for another series, one that I would have no interest in since science fiction isn't my thing. The Joannie segments go off on such a tangent I can't wait to return to present day and the characters that came to know over the 5 season run.

Without creating a spoiler, they could have built to the investigation without introducing an older and very boring Joannie. I gave this episode the lowest rating of 1 star, but would give the series itself a solid 7.

Warning: Spoilers
As is always the case these days, writers must foist their political bent on us-in this case, climate change. Thanks for screwing up a wonderful piece of work...
