A welcome return and a very well produced episode.
Sleepin_Dragon16 March 2019
This is arguably the standout episode of series 7, if I'm honest I guessed the villain before the crime had even been committed, but it was the combination of writing, execution, narrative and character play that made this such a terrific watch.

The appearance of former Detective, Sullivan that was the highlight, I was very sad when he left, and it was great to see he hadn't changed, still smart, authoritative, dependable and handsome, if took me a long time to take to Jack Dean's slightly abrasive Detective, but he has grown on me a lot, I thought he was excellent here, a terrific scene where he spoke fondly over his injured colleague.

It worked well as a mystery, featured some very familiar faces, but it was the dynamic between Father Brown and Sullivan that made it extra special.

A great episode. 9/10

The Sacrifice of Tantalus
Prismark102 February 2019
Inspector Mallory pursues a cop killer holed up in an isolated house. However Sergeant Goodfellow takes a bullet for him and Mallory injures his shoulder.

With Alan Tylett, the alleged cop killer still at large, Scotland Yard sends in Inspector Truman to investigate.

Father Brown is familiar with him. Better known as Inspector Sullivan now also working to root out dirty cops.

This time Sullivan is happy to partner up with Father Brown. Maybe because he cannot trust other policemen. A notebook that Mallory came across containing a list of names has disappeared. This list may had contained the names of bent coppers.

This was an enjoyable episode with an ending that leaves Sullivan thinking if he has done the right thing.

It does have the problem of another policeman who suddenly appears at the police station that you have never seen before. It was good to see Sullivan being more amiable with Father Brown this time. There was also a sweet moment as Mallory thanks Goodfellow who lies unconscious in the hospital bed.

You do wonder though if Mrs Mallory ever wondered where her husband has been for the last few days?

Probably the best of series 7
hamlet-1619 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is probably the best episode of series 7. Certainly the least fanciful with Tom Chambers reprising his role as Insp. Sullivan

The episode is unusually gritty with a few unexpected twists and turns and involving Birmingham's notorious gangs.

Not as pretty or as much fun as "The Honourable Thief" but a more thoughtful episode worthy of a re-watch.

One of the best stories, yet.

This story has some excellent writing especially with character development missing from many of the other stories. We get to see more of the human side of the characters pulling together as a community rather than fighting with each other. This seems more like the interactions of a small rural town. I hope we see more good stories like this.

Father Brown v Dirty coppers
safenoe14 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Tom Chambers makes a welcome return as Inspector Sullivan as he seeks to uncover bent coppers who will do anything to protect their corrupt deeds. Sergeant Goodfellow gets shot protecting Inspector Mallory in a police raid gone wrong, and it appears the corruption extends to the Birmingham City Police (Birmingham isn't far from Coventry).

The Chief Superintendent is up to his ears in corruption, and the apple doesn't fall far down, with his son working overtime to cover up his father's corruption big time. But then the father jumps on the proverbial grenade and falsely confesses to save his son. The finale is a sorrowful observation about how far the tentacles of corruption extend to the UK Police and Met init.

The human side of Inspector Mallory
coltras353 June 2023
A man suspected of killing a police officer is seen near Kembleford and Mallory is determined to catch him, but he has to ask the sleuthing priest for help when disaster strikes. Sergeant Goodfellow gets shots and ends up in hospital in critical condition while Mallory is injured - and it's all because of a notebook.

The bad guy is a little bit obvious especially when it's revealed that they are corrupt members in the notebook. It's a decent episode with enough things happening to be more than agreeable. Sullivan returns to the Kembleford police station to track down a fugitive when Goodfellow and Mallory are suspended from duty. And he has a more amicable pairing with Father Brown, mainly because Sullivan can't trust anyone in the police. But it's Inspector Mallory, my favourite character in the series, who is the most entertaining here, and shows a human side, and even compliments the sergeant.

Inspector Mallory nothing redeeming
unitynow8-883-9798741 December 2019
Inspector Mallory has no character development, I get he is the foil to the smart Father Brown, but his insistence on acting too quick and dumb isn't funny anymore. Even after this perfect opportunity to have him at least soften towards the Father he barely eases with Goodfellow, but still is an ass to him and everyone else. I wish they would exchange him as they have done in the past series or at least change him, it's be at least 3 series and still no change in him

Liked it, but it's not a favorite.

Warning: Spoilers
The seventh season of "Father Brown" has been really enjoyable so far with only "The Demise of the Debutante" being very disappointing. "The Sacrifice of Tantalus" is yet another good entry to the season. It's not one of my favorite episodes, but manages to be solid instead.

Let's start with the good aspects, shall we?

. The production values of the episode are great as usual. It's well-directed, the music's marvellous. The acting is good all around. The main cast is great as always. Jack Deam shows a much nicer side of Mallory, which was very welcoming to see. Tom Chambers is very good as Inspector Sullivan too.

. The mystery, which is about corrupt police officers, is compelling with a lot of intrigue.

But...

. I found the narrative to be very predictable at times. The clumsy policeman being the killer was very easy to figure out to be honest.

Overall, good, but not great.

7/10 HK
