Serious Sam on the cheap

Nitro Family was developed by Delphieye Entertainment. I think they are a Korean developer with only this game to their name. The game runs on the 'Serious Sam' engine.

You play a husband and wife team who must rescue their child from an evil group. The game has a cartoon look much like 'Serious Sam' and you travel with Maria who looks a bit like a stripper. You can also dual wield weapons which has been used in 'Shadow Warrior' with uzis and 'Blood' and 'Blood II' with different weapons. This was a fairly original mechanic at the time, but it is standard on a lot of FPS games now. Another weird element is time slows down and it gets psychedelic when you get a lot of kills. This is amusing the first few times, but it grates when you just want to complete a level without distraction.

The graphics are pretty smart. The levels are dull though. They are way too big and there's not much happening. It's almost like they gave up after a few levels and unfinished the later levels. The music seems like archive or unsigned music, a bit of rock, fake country music etc. It's not too bad, but it's not good either. The worst part is the actual combat. The enemies take a lot of hits, even with rocket launchers and shotguns. Most games around this time: ' Unreal Tournament', 'Serious Sam' and 'FEAR' used one hit kills in most cases for these weapons on weaker enemies. Enemies also seem to get up after being knocked down. This is very annoying as you think you've killed them and it is like they respawn. Due to this the game is way harder than it needs to be and not that much fun.

The game's art style is sort of unique and it is fun ... for 10 minutes. I would recommend you don't spend four hours completing the game like I did as it really isn't worth it.
