A film with class, but gaunt and incomplete
7 July 2023
An anomalous work in Dario Argento's filmography, which discards its typical visual drifts, limiting itself to tracing a mysterious underlying structure, solid and immersed in a splendid scenography.

The plot is certainly more cumbersome and at times much less flowing, the dynamic rhythm of the previous film is missing and furthermore the screenplay presents excessive inconsistencies (bad for a detective story), the psychologies of the characters are stylized and the final solution leads to the rambling. In short, within Argento's career it is certainly a minor film, perhaps too long and which turns out to be not so fascinating.

However, the acting is really good especially the part of Karl Malden.

The Shining (1980)

The worst movie of Stanley Kubrick
8 June 2023
I see my last review of The Shining made someone outraged. I reply to this person from my other account saying that not only I don't care what he thinks about what I wrote, but beyond that I will always continue to be of my opinion, which is that The Shining is one of the most unjustly overrated movies ever. Only Jack Nicholson plays well here, but all other characters are expressionless. And then the film is very long, full of meaningless dialogues that make everything deadly boring. Personally, I respect Stanley Kubrick as a director very much, but this is definitely one of the rare times he's screwed up. I repeat, The Shining isn't a garbage movie, but it is still millions of kilometers away from the true masterpieces of Kubrick (like 2001 and A Clockwork Orange to name two)

One of the most underrated movies of Hitchcock but at the same time one of the best
5 May 2023
I believe this is one of the most underrated works by thrilling master Hitchcock.

I don't understand how this film can't be put on a par with other masterpieces by the same director such as Psycho, Strangers on a train and The Birds.

Although it is a rather slow film and almost devoid of violence, it does not mean that it is tension-free.

The tension exists and can be felt everywhere in the movie: in the atmosphere, in the gestures, in the dialogues, in the behaviors and above all on the faces of the characters, two of whom are horrible murderers who, even when faced with their crime, try to in every way to cling to the philosopher Nietsche's theory of murder as a form and expression of art, which will infuriate the teacher of the two boys (James Stewart) who, horrified by the absurd exploitation that the two have made of his teachings, decides to take the reins of the situation.

The movie is brilliant because it is also shot according to a single take, which never distracts from framing the characters and their deepest feelings.

Certainly one of the director's best.

A refined giallo
3 May 2023
Not only the best of the animals trilogy but also the best of all Dario Argento's filmography. The killer here is very cunning and methodical and is not the usual psychopath who acts without a valid logic and motive as in future works by Argento. He also contains a strong message of social criticism against the petty bourgeoisie and the authorities, often unable to carry out their job. Acted very well and Morricone's music is beautiful. Furthermore, the acting in the film is really good and knows how to convey the feelings and fear that the characters feel in the right measure. The story is also very interesting and intriguing as well as the surprising twist.
