Daddy Issues Predominate
16 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
First, I will say that Ana de Armas gives a luminous performance in this film as Marilyn Monroe/Norma Jean Baker. You can't take your eyes off her. Unfortunately, the rest of the film frustrated me. First, by starting the narrative in Monroe's childhood and completing it at her death, the film's length meant it skipped over major events in her life. There have been numerous books and films depicting the life of Marilyn Monroe. This one chose to show Monroe's emotional issues as being related to her never having known her father, and then spending her life trying to impress him. This certainly could be a cause of many of her emotional problems, not to mention her tendency to marry older men successful in their own right, but the film was a bit heavy-handed with this theme (for instance, having her call both father-figure husbands "Daddy"). Another cinematic device overused here is the dreamy fantasy sequences, some of which starred Monroe's unborn babies. She either miscarried or aborted 3-4 children (I got a bit lost on this point). Other plot points were confusing, as they were thrown in with little introduction or explanation. For instance, they depict a three-way relationship (which was both friendly and sexual) between Monroe, Edward G. Robinson, Jr. And Charlie Chaplin Jr., (known as Cass). These two men also had huge Daddy issues with their famous fathers.

Bottom line: probably worth seeing if you are a devoted Monroe fan because of the star turn by de Armas, but those who aren't will likely be confused by the amorphous plot.

Note for parents: This film is NOT suitable for children due to explicit nudity and sex.

Joe, we hardly knew ye!
16 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this episode more than some did, and I like Ted Bessel. However, this episode once again seems to bring up the same questions raised by others in terms of Mary's boyfriends. The amusing parts of the episode are fun - Lou utters a classic line when Ted gets drunk when he notes this was Ted's first time getting falling-down drunk (I apologize if I don't quote the line correctly): "In drinking terms, Ted lost his olive." What frustrated me was that Joe (the character played by Ted Bessel) seemed perfect for Mary. Unlike Dan, who always seemed a bit highbrow to me, Ted was down to earth, smart and funny. At the end of the episode, Mary chooses Joe, but fast forward to the next episode (I believe), and she sees him off on a two-week business trip. After that, Joe is never seen or spoken of again! Once again, we never find out what happened to a guy Mary was seemingly serious about. Other than that, this was a funny episode.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show: Mary's Insomnia (1976)

What is acceptable in the 1970's
16 December 2023
One of the interesting parts of this show is how you see that things that were acceptable in the 1970's may not be now. One of those things is addiction. In this episode, Lou becomes quite concerned about Mary's (up until then) short-term use of sleeping pills. The irony is that, in my opinion, Lou was an alcoholic throughout the series. However, the 1970's was a time when attention was being paid to the abuse of barbiturates, while drinking was more of an acceptable thing, particularly for men. In any event, the episode highlights Lou's fatherly care and concern for Mary, which is sweet. Still, every time I see this episode, I want to throw Mary a bottle of Melatonin!

No More Tarantino Movies For Me
5 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure where to start with this - the performances, the direction - but I will say this: If the murders committed by the Manson Family had gone like they had in this film, I would be so happy. But they did not, and I think this movie to some extent makes light of that, which I find unforgivable. I had never seen a Tarantino film before, but had heard they tended to be gratuitously violent, and if this film is any indication, I don't doubt. Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio play their parts well, and to some extent, for laughs. This movie is only peripherally about the Manson murders, and had it been about a washed up film/TV actor and his stunt double, with the murderous hippies being totally fictitious, I might not have been as offended. I liked the soundtrack, and other than the performances, that is about all I liked. Moviemakers would be well advised to remember that using real life murders can re-victimize people still living today.

The Rookie (2018– )
8/10
Entertaining, yes. Realistic, not so much.
23 June 2023
My husband has watched "The Rookie" for some time and speaks well of it, so one night I just decided to start at the beginning and watch it on Hulu. I am part-way through Season Two, so my review refers to what I have seen thus far.

First off, Nathan Fillion is just likable, and he remains so in this role. As a 61-year-old, watching a show that indicates that you can pursue new beginnings even when older is an attractive premise to me. Most of the cast here are also likable, and the show does not focus on Fillion to the exclusion of other characters, which are well developed, so you find many characters for whom to root.

The stories in this series are usually interesting and the action fast-moving. Now, to the unrealistic part. The vast majority of police officers never fire their weapon while on duty. Fillion and the other rookies seem to do so several times a day! Okay, it is LA, but still. Also, unless Nolan (Fillion's character) became rich in his Construction work in Pennsylvania, as a rookie patrol officer, he is not going to be able to afford to buy a home in California. In fact, why choose the LAPD? Kansas City has a cheaper cost of living.

Nevertheless, as I've said before, the enjoyment of TV and movies often requires the willing suspension of disbelief. If you can do that, you should enjoy the Rookie, which has a very lighthearted side underneath the drama. Predictable is predictable for a reason - we enjoy watching shows that give us interesting dramatic themes, but do not do so with a constant angst amongst the characters (which I hate - I hear enough whining and self-pity from reality shows). You should enjoy this show as long as you aren't looking for NYPD Blue or Hill Street Blues.

The Considerate Volcano
13 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I call this the considerate volcano, because it gave the main characters so much time to get out of Dodge. I am certainly no expert on volcanos, but my understanding is that once they blow, lava, ash, etc. Would have taken out everyone in the vicinity within seconds to minutes. But, movies and TV often require the willing suspension of disbelief, so I digress. This is a formulaic movie until the very end, when a trace of reality sneaks in. The actors are generally ok, but while I like Kiefer Sutherland, he was completely miscast here as a Roman Senator with a British accent. It is good that the movie is short and almost all action, although it would have been nice to know a bit more about the culture and the backgrounds of the characters. A fairly inoffensive, if uninspiring way to spend 90 minutes.

Scary in a confusing way
27 March 2023
First, I have to say that Helen Hunt, an excellent actress, has been made so odd-looking by plastic surgery that it actually distracted me from the film when she was on-screen. I don't enjoy saying that, as it seems catty, but it's true. Folks, we all get older - that just translates to playing older characters. That's only a bad thing if you make it one. As to the film - it certainly did an excellent job of keeping me guessing who the bad guy (or gal) might be. The use of eerie music to advance the fear was some of the best I've seen (or heard). There were a bunch of threads to tie up here, and some may have been left hanging more than I would have liked, but overall this was an effectively scary film with original plot twists. I also liked that it was more spooky than gory, which I prefer in a thriller.

Scarecrow and Mrs. King (1983–1987)
10/10
Pure Fun
4 March 2023
All television, for the most part, requires at least some willing suspension of disbelief. Scarecrow and Mrs. King is no exception, but no one really cares (and why should we - who really watches TV to see reality, something these "reality show" producers might want to keep in mind). I don't know anyone who watches this show in the 80's who doesn't think of it fondly. The characters are likable, and we all root for Lee and Amanda to get together. This was made during the Cold War, and that informs many of the stories in terms of the bad guys, but that doesn't bother me - that's how things were before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The plots are fun, and are safe for watching by anyone over the age of 9 or 10, I would say. So, get the DVD set and watch with your kids!

Pointless Violence
24 January 2023
I suppose some might argue that all violence is pointless, but by that I mean violence without motive. It would certainly be wrong to kill someone who cheated on you, for instance, but at least you had a motive, right?

The violence in this film is completely random. Plus, the only character I liked was the dog. I have this three stars because it delivers on suspense to some degree. Through the entire film, I was urging the main character to move back to Texas. Plus, what apartment in LA rents for a mere $895? I live in West Virginia and it's hard to find one that cheap here! Anyway, if you like to see people killing people for no apparent reason, this could be for you.

Good Message
22 January 2023
Okay, I straight up have to admit that I have recently become addicted to these Lifetime "inspired by true events" movies. They have this melodramatic formula, but it works in terms of making you care what the outcome will be. In this case, I like Elizabeth Rohm, and her character seems like one who would never put up with abuse, thus showing that it can happen to anyone, even those who think they would never tolerate abuse. It shows how easy it is to rationalize staying in such a relationship. For that reason, I find this film's message to be valuable, and the performances believable. I actually think it would be valuable to allow women in abusive relationships watch this and discuss it in a group therapy situation.

Quiet Thriller Builds in Intensity
30 October 2022
Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain are both very good actors, and this film proves that. It starts off slowly, but picks up fairly quickly. The main reason I did not give this film more than a 7/10 is actually the lighting, of all things. When the characters were in the hospital (which was 90% of the time), the light was so low you couldn't tell was happening. I realize that this is a common device in horror and true crime movies, but it bugs the living daylights out of me. Also, what is with Jessica Chastain's character having a very serious heart condition, but not heeding her doctor's advice to stop working because she needed to stick it out till she was eligible for insurance from her employer? One, that insurance probably would not cover a pre-existing condition, and two, almost anyone with cardiomyopathy is eligible for Social Security disability and Medicare (okay, this story line may not actually have happened, but I retired after 32 years from the Social Security Office of Hearings Operations, so that whole thing really annoyed me).

Slaps Victims Loved Ones in the Face
12 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If this was review was just about the performers, it would get a 10. I watched it because I like true crime. I enjoy seeing how murders are investigated and how murderers are brought to justice. If that had been the focus, I might have rated this more highly. I had heard that the victims' families were upset by this mini-series, and now I know why. It's one thing to make a documentary about a murderer that discusses what happened and how the murderer was caught. It's another thing to re-enact these events in an often disturbing fashion. The question a filmmaker needs to ask him/herself is "why? Why should I make this film? Will it add anything to our knowledge of this subject and perhaps, in doing so, help us know more about how to prevent such things? I found this film to be gratuitous in its depictions of violence and sex. To make matters worse, the film is misleading in that it depicts events that never happened. Filming a true story often involves making up dialogue that no one can accurately reproduce, but this fictionalizes entire situations, such as making the character of Glenda Cleveland, Dahmer's next door neighbor who keeps complaining about the smell (of dead, dismembered victims) coming from his apartment, as well as sounds of people being hurt or killed. She reportedly placed over 50 calls to the police, most of which went unacknowledged. However, in reality she lived in the apartment building next door, and so could not have done much of what was attributed to her in the film. Quite honestly, this brings into question much of what the movie depicts. The film also depicts much racism and homophobia, particularly within the police department. While that may be accurate, it is difficult to know. Anyway, my three stars for this are for the performances. Otherwise, I think this mini-series is gratuitous in its depiction of sex and violence, and irresponsible in its many falsehoods.

Formulaic Lifetime Movie
22 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Okay. First the good. Bree Williamson is gorgeous and has presence. The little girl who plays Mallie, same.

Now the bad. The plot was a bit confusing. Naming a children's store "Juvenile Shop?" I think her competition must have won the right to name it. Also, the things Karina (and ultimately her husband) did to try and help the little girl came off as a bit stalker-like, really. And saying, "The police would never believe us" is a tired plot device.

Minor gripe: how do television characters living in California manage to afford these nice, big homes? In reality, most people cannot afford them. Especially not Karina's single friend, who is in nursing school!

Bottom line: If you like Lifetime movies, you will probably like this one well enough.

I Was Wrong - Kristen Stewart Was Right For This
12 February 2022
When I first heard that Kristen Stewart was to portray Diana, I thought, "Well, there's a mistake of gargantuan proportions!" Turns out, I was wrong. Kristen Stewart is nothing like Diana Spencer, but she doesn't play Diana Spencer - she IS Diana Spencer, not Kristen Stewart playing Diana Spencer. As to the story, it is not a happy one. The atmosphere makes you feel the claustrophobia that the Princess must have felt. The cinematography adds to that. While this is not a happy story, it is none the less compelling. While the story is obviously fiction, it is sad to think that Diana may never have achieved the love and happiness she wanted before her untimely death.
