Dolls (2002)
8/10
A beautiful, albeit depressing, film
8 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The first five minutes of "Dolls" had me at odds with the film, and very close to turning it off. But the first five minutes are extremely important, and as the movie went on I liked it more. I will have you know that there is no happy ending in this movie, and the final scene made me sick to my stomach with sorrow. But it is truly a moving film, that will have you thinking about the dimensions of love and what it has become in today's society. In most romantic dramas, there is usually sex, but not so in this, which made me want to applaud the director for showing the depths of love without the physical part. There is also very little dialogue, so you MUST pay attention to the screen. Overall, it is a bittersweet study of six individuals all coping with lost love in one way or another. Bravo.

Evening (2007)
6/10
Performances save questionable writing
8 August 2007
What kept me watching "Evening" was the actors' performances. The script was a tad messy and in places poorly done, but thanks to Claire Danes, Vanessa Redgrave, and all the other talented thespians in this film, I did not walk out of the theater groaning.

Kudos to Claire Danes, who has become one of my favorite actresses, for giving her part as the younger Ann some soul. I also loved Vanessa Redgrave in this, but then again, it's hard to go wrong with her.

I was, however, disappointed with how little screen time Meryl Streep got. I really like her a lot, and I thought it was kind of a waste that she only got five minutes or so. But, that's Hollywood, I guess.

The character I loved most in this movie was Lila's brother Buddy. I absolutely adored him and was sad when he departed from the movie.

What I don't understand is why everyone was in love with Harris, Patrick Wilson's character. He didn't do much with the role that had little meat to it to begin with. I mean, it would have been a smidgeon more understandable if he was attractive, but I, at least, don't find him so.

Evening is not worthy or Oscars or awards, but it is an OK movie that I would go see again.
