A social commentary that doesn't deliver as a film
25 December 2023
While watching the film I found myself constantly snacking and doing other chores and still getting bored just listening to the dialogue that does not tell the story. The absense of musical score, tension and poor pacing made this two hour film a great ordeal to overcome.

There are filmmakers that have a lot to say and their movies lack unnecessary scenes and dialogs and are completely polished and engage the viewer completely. This movie has none of that. Its maker obviously had social commentary in mind and she had seen "Call me by your name" too. Then it needs some disgusting and provocative scenes that didn't appear to do the trick because the maker failed to deliver the shock.

It left me very little ideas to interpret and in the end it ended up being this the rich vs. The poor type of social commentary and climbing up in the foodchain kind of art movie. It was just too boring and didn't really give me the thrill of seeing a great piece of cinema. Also using letterbox aspect was a poor artistic choice.

Fast paced action series that can only improve
23 September 2023
The Continental opens to me slowly because I've never seen any John Wick movies and it's not an easy one to comprehend as very little is explained. I like the idea of a mystery, but it only works if there is a script, strong characters, strong storytelling, great dialogue. The Continental does poorly in that respect and the first episode felt like running from one scene to another way too fast. I'm expecting this show to just improve. After one and half hour the story should have already progressed somewhere and I was getting bored of it.

However I liked the 70's vibe and the music. All in all it's like as if the script had been generated by a computer bot and it resembles these films that were based on a video game entirely. So there's lots of room to improve this and hopefully I'm completely wrong about this.

After watching the complete first season, I can honestly say that the show didn't improve much at all during the four and half hour running time. They should have made a two hour action movie instead.

Also the very narrow cinema aspect with two black bars on video doesn't do any favors to the image quality. On normal sized tvs, it's barely visible and even on a bigger screen it looked so tiny.

In summary The Continental has great premises but takes a lot of time to watch and feels like a waste of time because it offers very little gratification in the end.

Dreamlike mystery of a twin sister
25 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I've never seen the original movie and but I quicly got the idea of the show and it felt a little prolonged. Same story could have been told in just three episodes or in one full length film.

Storytelling was so dreamlike and not in this reality, so much so that it gave me clue that it's just the main character talking to herself. She had maintained the memory of her sister and that had developed into a split personality. Lots of clues are given, the Elliot's drug addiction would prohibit her practicing medical profession and the success.

So if one feels that the show is a little silly, then the truth can be found by not trusting your eyes and looking a little deeper. As a shorter feature film, this would have been a lot better and it has magnificent main actress that lifts the show to another level. As a long tv show I didn't find it enjoyable.

The Power (2023)

Female empowerement that is not so fresh anymore
14 April 2023
The pilot episode of The Power looked promising but the second episode lost me. The biggest issue for me is the sloppy storytelling and hasty pacing which means there's a new scene and new character every ten seconds. I didn't feel like getting to know the characters with that great speed.

I think this would have been a lot better if it was made like the old movies and tv shows, slowly and with good script and dialogue. If there had been like full half an hour time to tell a story of the person and then next, it would have made a lot more sense. Now it's all a mess.

I'm ratings this based on the series and how it looks like, not the female empowerement which is the whole idea in this. It just didn't work for me and I'm not going to tune in for this.

Truly horrifying hidden gem
6 March 2023
I wasn't honestly expecting much but from the very first moments the movie had that 80's horror movie vibe in it and I was hooked instantly.

There's not much building up of tension, it just goes straight into action without any background story. It actually worked for me. I know horror movies are usually very simple but on top of that this is very horrible, gory and even painful to watch. It even felt dangerous, and silly me, I'm not a child. It's like a perfect stress relief for someone who had a very stressful day.

It looked very professional, acting's good unlike with many other horror movies of similar budget.

It was such a relief that the movie was over, it was horrible - horrible in a good way making it a good horror movie.

Childish adventure action flick with great cast
5 March 2023
It's said that if one has only a few words to say, don't try to be a movie director. This comes to my mind while trying to watch movies made by this director. It's not an issue if you happen to have 8.5 million euros to waste, it can be compensated with a professionalism but it won't cover the truth that one could have made a masterpiece with that money. Of course one should have more words to say.

The movie itself is very childish, made for early teenagers as a target audience and obviously it did well because that age group is just discovering cinema and are more active.

Of course the film looked good, The middle european Alps substituted the landscape of Lapland, scenery can look just great but geographically erratic. The english speaking actors did a great job anyway. In overall the film has nothing to offer for anyone over 20 and is just a huge mess. It can be a great film to analyze though. It only shows that if one has the money, one can do anything.

Uneven experience but still quite entertaining
28 January 2023
The title Shotgun Wedding probably looked like fun on the drawing board, but in reality it makes a quite forgettable b-movie which I don't want to see again.

The problem is the extreme violence within a funny comedy which doesn't fit to the theme. The laughs end pretty quickly, when the action starts and then I didn't know what to expect.

During the production it was probably unsure what it was going to be, a horror-thriller with comedy or just action with a few laughs.

The cast is superb, leaving a little funny speculation of the age. The couple is quite youthful and in their early fifties and the bride's mother in law is just merely ten years older than the couple. Oh well, does that really matter. Jennifer Coolidge should have had more time on the screen. She's just too funny and can save a lot when the movie itself is not going to be so good.

I rated this film with 4/10, because I felt that the movie lacked a good script and dialogue and it is a little too much fun and too violent at the same time. That left me puzzled.

It's not a disaster, it's just a little fun brainless movie.

One of the best shows of the year gets conclusion
28 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
During the first season, most main characters are killed off which left a lot of speculation for the future season. It would have ended just fine but probably there was a room to develop the story further.

The participation of Al Pacino in the second season felt a little arbitrary, also the first three episodes were the weakest in my opinion. The show could improve and it just did that with lots of action and tension which kept me right there on my seat wanting to see the end. Also the reason for telling the past with Al Pacino's character was justified and wrapped it up perfectly.

This show is very enjoyable but yet very very violent and cartoonish, almost childish. That's the only criticism I have for the series. If it was made more realistic, it'd have been too bleak and tiring.

The mini-story in the seventh episode is intriguing and fun enough to be a movie. It contributed for the overall feel and satisfaction of ending the series. The story could not go any further, it could only conclude.

Exhaustive flood of ideas and cliches
16 December 2022
Lovecraft Country seemed to borrow everything from the book of cliches along with similarity to Indiana Jones, The Exorcist, Ghostbusters to name a few with themes of time travel, witchcraft, oppression, racism. That's just a few, because I couldn't keep track of what was going on.

Main problem with the series appeared to be that this mess was quite difficult to keep intact and make it work. It didn't. First it was like Indiana Jones, then there's a haunted house and ghosts and what's next. The makers obviously wanted it to have everything in it.

Honestly the sixth episode in Korea was brilliant and it could be a separate movie or horror tv show. Ïn this uneven series, it felt that it was completely separate story unrelated to the series.

A perfection with alluring music
16 December 2022
I binge watched this tv show in just two days because it was made to be very addictive with ethereal music, beautiful scenery, perfect scripting and character development. It was just such treat that I forgot everything else.

Characters are very interesting, multidimensional and none of them are underdeveloped. That along with alluring music takes the show to another level.

Second season was a lot sexier than the first, of course left me with a thought that there had been some temporary loss of ideas. However it turned out better than I had expected.

The plot itself is fairly simple and it is repeated on the second season. I believe that repeating the plot is going to wear after such a spectacular finale of the second season. It felt like a good point for a conclusion but as it happens this thing is going to get renewed.

A movie not made to please a viewer
21 November 2022
Movies are made to be enjoyed and a director usually wants to please a viewer with every scene, telling a story in harmony with music. This is one of those films that lacks that for the first 90 minutes. It's all style over substance without much effort in storytelling. Everything is explained in detail and nothing left for the audience to guess. Then comes a twist which tries to save the film and the last 30 minutes are pure joy. However it comes a little too late to save the film from being a total disaster.

This could be remade into a much better film by just leaving the last 30 minutes into it and making new scenes and new script. Stronger scifi elements, stronger dialogue, pacing and so forth. The director obviously loves to imitate many masterful directors so I just have to see what her own style is to be. There's nothing original in remaking Stepford wives, Truman show, Suburbicon, Vivarium or something similar without a plausible script.

In summary this was totally forgettable movie which leaves too many loose ends untied. Most importantly story was left untold.

My Policeman (2022)
7/10
A mediocre drama with a touching ending
6 November 2022
I'd imagine there would be lots of stories to tell about the discrimination and abuse against the minorities by the society. Yet, there's not so many movies told about the matter how people were hunted and persecuted because they didn't meet the christian moral and family standards.

My Policeman comes to fill the void in that respect and tells a story of a broken love triangle, broken lives brought back together again.

None of the acting performances shine, all are bland and limited in the range of emotion. In that respect Harry Styles does equally well, he does act just as good as anyone else in the film. Movie has unintentionally funny scene which made me laugh in tears. That was the comedy part then.

Regardless of the criticism, i'd say that the movie was worth watching because of the rare and delicate subject matter which even in today's world causes turmoil in people's lives. Maybe it needed to be more powerful, more emotional and deeper.

My Policeman doesn't seek to please the viewer and it's going to divide the audience and their opinions. It really is one of those movies.

The Unholy (2021)

Could have been a new cult classic
30 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The beginning of The Holy lead me to believe that it had all the ingredients to be a new cult classic, but it fails in an attempt at religious horror.

First it's too serious and its makers forgot to check what the witches actually were. In reality there were no witches, just innocent victims persecuted and killed by the church. This should not be forgotten even hundreds of years later. So it's just silly to make a serious film about it and having the spirit of a witch take revenge on the people and make it do spooky things.

Secondly it's like one of those few better episodes of the Supernatural - tv series. It makes the film seem quite generic and predictable.

On the other hand, The holy is very well made film, which has great cast, great acting, great budget, great everything. If Supernatural was your thing, then you're going to love this.

Very entertaining new take on exorcism
30 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly I was not expecting much from a movie produced to a streaming platform but I was completely wrong.

The movie's fun, it's got great 80's vibes and music, humor and finally exorcism. On top of that it doesn't take itself too seriously and it is fun to watch. All of the cast do a great job in their roles.

Horror comedy on exorcism theme is a better idea as the theme itself feels quite old and worn. The movie does great job reinventing teen horror genre and this one has a good script, dialogue and character development. It's definitely one of those better movies this year as recent years have not been so good.

Very unusual arthouse tv-show
28 September 2022
TOtDY wasn't showing in the maintitles to watch, wasn't advertised anywhere and I stumbled upon it by using search on Primevideo. It was just like finding a treasure.

Each episode is like a slow movie and the story slowly unfolds and just gets better after the fifth episode. Combining electronic new age music with slow camera, slow everything. Dialogue like of Kaurismaki film, film without an inner logic, mysterious like David Lynch film and violent at times and feeling unsafe about watching it. Refn isn't much into storytelling and explaining things and that makes it more mysterious. It's great that some directors don't underestimate viewers and make it challenging.

Arthouse tv show is very rare of its kind and I'll keep on hoping that Primevideo platform re-invents something less mainstream like this. It didn't need a second season, because the story came to an end. It's great that they didn't want to prolong and keep making stuff that starts to repeat itself.

Watching it is a challenge, keep watching it'll become more rewarding.

Fun tv series with genre film vibes of the 80's
17 May 2022
Italians could make great genre films in the past that are remembered even today and found by the new audiences every day. This can't be said for many of the new italian movies and serieses. However Bang Bang Baby is a big exception to this and it shows how cool italian directors and filmmakers can be. Just disregard the ominous name.

This series has high production values, big budget, fantastic cast, great 80's music and very very good script. It appears that nothing could go wrong with the first five episodes because I was completely hooked. I didn't have any boring moments watching it. I can't think of negative things to say.

Incredibly slow fantasy series
24 December 2021
Firstly this is my opinion and many other fans of fantasy genre are just going to like this anyway. Now to the point, this series is incredibly slow paced and hastily made, the script, dialog and two dimensional characters being its weakest points.

It took 8 episodes, a whole season to even develop to a point where it could leave everything hanging. Sure there's action and violence but it all seemed quite pointless with cardboard characters. Whole series seems quite sanitized too, so it's made for teenage audience.

Everything else is just superb and it's just a shame that the most important things don't just work even if they had all the money in the world to pour into it.

In comparison GOT- series had three dimensional characters, better script and dialog and it was easier to care for them and keep watching it.

Surely I'd not care to see another season of this but hopefully they'll improve it and make it better.

A poor film without a beginning and an end
25 September 2021
I didn't have high expectations for this film as I already knew that streaming services are like the discount shelves of DVDs in the past. Those shelves were full of titles that weren't accepted to silverscreen or had done quite poorly. This one will not do any better than that.

After half an hour I was so bored and angry that I had to stop watching and just out of curiosity I just continued to watch it on the next day. It's something remarkable that a film with great cast has one dimensional characters without background story, poor script and dialogue, doesn't engage and each scene is disconnected from each other. There's no climax, no beginning nor end and no idea what the film wants to say. It was said to be scarier than Black Swan and some kind of hybrid of Suspiria. Whoa, but the creators didn't have a slightest idea what they were doing.

It's just a poorly executed drama which left me quite angry.

Twin Peaks (2017)
4/10
Lacks atmosphere, heart and soul of the first two seasons
7 April 2021
There's always a great chance that sequels aren't going to be as good as the original and this is yet again another fine example how it usually goes.

The earlier two seasons raised the bar so high that it was only going to be inevitable that the third season was going to be weak.

In the first two seasons there weren't many unreasonably violent scenes and there was no sex at all. After all, great show doesn't need cheap tricks at all to work. Same can't be said of the third season which makes cheap tricks another form of art.

In my opinion the decision of not playing the hypnotic music in the background was a great mistake. Nowadays directors don't even know how to use music to enhance the experience and yet again, it's no surprise that Twin peaks without the catchy music isn't quite like Twin peaks at all. All what's left is the theme that is played on each intro.

It's not my Twin Peaks anymore.

Low budget film that doesn't know its purpose
12 March 2021
The poster on Netflix looked promising but after an hour I was feeling quite angry for the wasted time. It's obvious that a low budget limited the production but even low budget films are sometimes good if there's enough passion and a strong story to tell. This has neither.

Music is the same ambient sound played in a loop which doesn't match the picture and fails to create suspense. Dialogue is almost as if it had been completely improvised.

After being so bored and mad at Netflix, I'm sure that this movie won't live up to the expectations of most viewers. However if one happens to like film school projects then this might be good.

Not your average Netflix show - better than expected
8 March 2021
I didn't have high expectations due to low ratings on IMDB but I was pleasantly surprised to see a better quality tv-show in the horror mystery genre. Many people may be giving this low rating due to the usual poor english dubbing. Having watched this in the original language, I highly recommend watching it in italian instead.

This show gave me the retro 80's vibe of the day when filmmakers used to have passion and it really shows how passionate the makers were. Music is used to create atmosphere with slow careful camera movement that actually cares to tell a story properly.

I will be waiting for the second season, but nevertheless i would satisfied with the first season even if it didn't get a second season.

Poor soundtrack almost spoils the experience
1 March 2021
Three stories are connected together in a spiral of violence in The Devil All the Time. I wasn't expecting much because of the unimpressive and poor soundtrack, which plays the same melody almost in every scene. If the film saw a different cut, with altered soundtrack and music to support the atmosphere and story it'd be four to five star film. However that's not all, the film suffers of the typical ADHD symptom of today. There's lots of characters and there's a great haste to tell the story when infact the film should slow down to be more impressive. Also narration tells even the most obvious things that the viewer should have already understood anyway.

In overall, even with the bad soundtrack and other issues the film is above average and was worth my time. Although with this content the film could have been a lot better than it actually is now.

An average drama of forbidden love that seems quite pointless
7 February 2021
Perfect music choices, high production values, sets and skillful actors in an otherwise average drama that appears to miss its point. The main character being somewhat of an antihero doesn't get much sympathy from me either. The premature plot twist too early makes the end of the film quite uninteresting and almost pointless. It may be the way the film was cut, or it's just as it is, a story that does well on a novel but not on a film.

It certainly has the look and feel of the old italian films in general and that gave a very positive vibe to me. It's not a new masterpiece though.

A little more mature version of Harry Potter with lots of hoccus-poccus
7 February 2021
I don't know how much a tv show has to be dumbed down to be enjoyable for today's audience but I see this as a prime example how it's made. First you take a notorious subject of witchhunts in Europe and then make it a fantasy fairytale of with generic characters that can cast spells like Harry Potter and his friends. Sounds quite childish to me, but this is exactly what this series is about. It totally undermines the subject matter, of people being hunted and tortured for what they were. There were no witches, no sorcery in reality and yet the creators saw a possibility to make yet another Harry Potter without a purpose.

Also poor choices of music make this experience even more uneven. It just could have been so much better if the target audience had been adults and aspect in reality what had actually happened.

Hemlock Grove (2013–2015)
6/10
Dreadful first season followed by far superior two seasons
7 February 2021
Hemlock Grove is a vampire and werewolf themed horror fantasy series with less generic characters. It makes references into notorious 80's horror films such as the Howling. Dialogue and over-acting is quite horrible in the first season and it's quite obvious that the director didn't want the actors to do their best. It seemed to be improvised and it took the whole first season to really start progressing.

The second and third seasons on the other hand were far superior than the first. Everything was better, script, dialogue and acting but having the burden of the first thirteen episodes it's not going to get more than six stars from me. It's obvious that same themes can't be recycled too many times and the series was cancelled after the third season.
