A Stupid Family Courtroom Drama
3 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Without having any notion about what the movie will be, I decided to watch this movie. Turns out, this movie is one of the most stupid family courtroom dramas you will see on screen.

The plot revolves around Guruji (Paresh Rawal) and his wife Urmila (Neena Kulkarni) who are now in full parenting mode taking care of their grandchild Yaman a.k.a. Momoji. Yaman's parents and Guruji's younger son and daughter-in-law Malhar (Shiv Pandit) and Mallika (Mimi Chakraborty) are working parents who can give little time and attention to their kid. They visit their son on weekends. Things take a turn when they decide to relocate to the US and express a wish to take Yaman back with them. This leads to a legal battle between a father and a son to take guardianship of Yaman.

Now this is where you should stop reading if you haven't seen the movie yet and come back later to ponder on what I have to say.

SPOLIERS AHEAD

While the movie tries to dissect the dynamics of a father-son relationship, the plot and the characters are not etched out right.

Paresh Rawal's character of Guruji stick to traditional Indian parenting style but his character is quite egoistic and borderline narcisstic. The plot indicates that he has already failed being an ideal father twice but he still believes his style of parenting is superior. Guruji's elder son dies of cardiac arrest (due to stress) and his younger son Malhar is weak, lack confidence and trembles physically when speaking his mind. Guruji is unsympathetic to both his sons only because he loves them so much that he doesn't want them to leave. Guruji also has a notion that an ideal father is the one who keeps his job. However, Guruji is highlighted as a beacon of ideal father. It is he who decides to go to the court and not the son. As an audience, should we sympathize with Guruji or feel disgusted?

Neena Kulkarni's Urmila character is of a grandmother who takes control of Yaman over his mother. She is equally indirectly responsible in the frustration and the subsequent heart condition of her elder son as she hides his passport putting an end to his dreams of going abroad. She is unwilling at first to give away Yaman to his mother, Mallika, even when she pleads. It clearly looks like she has hijacked a mother-son relationship to fill in her loneliness. Throughout the movie she constantly nags about how ill-responsible Mallika was as Yaman was suffering from high fever when he was only 3 months old. However, her character being a mother twice fails to understand that Mallika is a first-time parent/mother. For many first-time mothers/parents, things are overwhelming and these mothers/parents learn through experience. If you label a mother or a parent as a Bad Parent only because their kid falls sick, I believe all parents in the world then fall into the bad parent category.

Mimi Chakraborty's character of Mallika is another weird one. She wants to be desperately with her son but doesn't at the same time. She appreciates the help she receives from her in-laws but she never steps her foot down to claim her son back. She is fiercely professional, independent and strong to outsiders, but she is meek and timid at home. She can rant a monologue on a dinner table but she cannot do the same in court.

Manoj Joshi's character of Pinku Uncle who is a close friend of Guruji and his advocate, personally believes the grandparents should lead their lives independently as he does. On a call outside a roadside shack, he drives away his son from coming to India because he believes that the next generation only uses grandparents as nannies. He also calls Guruji - dedicated aayaa. However, he is supporting Guruji's case of keeping his grandson and becoming his guardian. Technically, his character is nothing short of a hypocrite.

K. K. Raina's character of judge is the laziest judge adjourning and stretching the case for no reason.

Apart from these badly written characters, the plot has loopholes the size of a manhole.

Firstly, the case makes no sense. In the words of Amruta Subhash's character this case should have be dismissed immediately.

Secondly, both the parents are capable and physically fit. Even if the father is unemployed and is a social drinker, the court never considers that mother too is a part of that party.

Third, the court never calls Mallika to the front and ask for her opinion but the judge believes ke bacche se poochna chahiye kyonki bacche ki khushi ka sawaal hain. What about maa ki khushi? The case and the drama only focuses on the father-son legal ego clash and never takes into consideration the wants of the mother of the child, which is so critical to the case. Even when Mallika is seen in the final court scene, the judge doesn't even bother to ask her opinion on all this.

Manoj Joshi's various debate points about what Malhar eats at a prayer meeting, veg and non-veg are not relatable to the core point but just personal remarks to assasinate his character. This dilutes the entire courtroom drama debate and deviates from the main topic only to stir up some emotions.

Lekin, Adalat emotions per nahi facts per chalti hain and that is where this family courtroom drama falters spectacularly.

A Heartfelt Slice of Life Cinema
8 December 2023
Directed by Vijay Maurya, Mast Mein Rehne Ka is much more than what the trailers offer. Right from the first scene you can see stellar performance by Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta. However, I have to mention that the real stars of the movie are Abhishek Chauhan as Nanhe and Monica Panwar as Rawas/Rani. As their lives crisscross situations happen which drives the human struggle story forward. All the supporting chracters do a fine job. The city of Mumbai is also a character which we see through the lens of Nagaraj Ashokan Rathinam. From bylanes of Charni Road to Dongri his lens capture every detail that makes Mumbai Mumbai. Editing by Antara Lahiri is crisp. This two hour movie is a great watch for those who want to enjoy good cinema which you can reflect on long after the end credits roll. I recommend it.

You'll Either Love It or Hate It
16 September 2023
It is likely that when you scroll through the reviews you will find people completely loving this movie and some completely bashing it.

I know, I know - nothing new in what I'm saying...but hold on...

When I watched this movie, I loved it for a different take on how the Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella story flows. It starts off very similar but soon it deviates from the conventional plot we all know.

Half way down the movie, this turns into a completely different story. It sort of turns into an investigative courtroom drama, which some might appreciate and some won't.

As the story progresses into the final phase and the truth is revealed it is likely that your mind might like the movie, but your heart might not.

If you like experimental movies where you are willing to see your beloved characters in a different light, you will love it.

On the other hand, if you are a purist and prefer the traditional plot, this is going to be a bad experience.

A Confused Love Story
24 July 2023
Considering that a lot of people are appreciating this movie, I decided to watch it and sure I did REGRET.

I have no clue in the world what these people found in this movie so brilliant that they are rating it so highly.

The plot is an absolute mess. Sure, the director has tried to amp up the emotional chord but I found the comparison of marriage issues with WWII a bit ridiculous.

Both the characters Varun and Janhvi don't have much depth.

The supporting cast does a good job. The music is passable and the only good thing is that audience get to know more about WW stories and information.

Overall a SNORE FEST.

Oppenheimer (I) (2023)

OPPEN-HYPE-MER
24 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If you are planning to buy tickets for Oppenheimer from an entertainment point of view, DON'T. This is a rather exhaustive deep-dive into the personality of Oppenheimer. It has got nothing much to do with the Manhattan Project and the Trinity Test.

Also, all the hype about - go watch it in IMAX - fails when you are done watching the movie. A major part of the movie is all talk-talk-talk so all you get to see on that giant screen are close-up of actors and their aging face wrinkles and blemishes. Except for a few scenes of Los Alamos there is nothing here.

The no-CGI Trinity Test scene build up tension with plenty of background score but when you watch it on screen it just passes.

The screenplay as usual jumps frantically and therefore it can get confusing if you don't pay attention.

At least I'm not going for a Nolan movie next time in a theatre.

Are You Ready John?.............YEAH
27 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If you have already seen the earlier installments of John Wick franchise, you are already aware of what's coming. While the JW4 trailer do showcase the level of action you're about to see, but some of the best action scenes are not in the trailer, so you have a lot to discover as you go on a ride with John Wick on his quest to challenge the High Table.

While most people are talking about the insane level of action, let me tell you the two other factors that made this movie a cinematic treat to watch.

Lighting - Most of the movie scenes are shot at night and they are done beautifully. The neon lights contrast with the dark sky and ultra-black suits and guns and pistols and armours. It creates a new dimension of its own.

Camera Work - The cinematography by Dan Laustsen is so immersive. Just after the Paris car scene is over and when John enters a building, pay attention to how the camera moves from the moment John is on the stairs. That scene alone with a spectacular one long-shot camera work is gonna blow you apart.

Watch John Wick 4 in IMAX for the best experience.

Nothing Nowhere None at Once
21 March 2023
With all the hype and the awards that this movie received I was certainly expecting this one to be waaayyy beyond other movies. However, this movie turned out to be just a STUPID OVERRATED 2-HOUR RIDE best for psuedo-intellects.

Its like that painting at a museum where the artist splashes all the colors haphazardly (in the guise of modern art) and then puts it on an exhibition and then people come stare at it and they come up with some earth-moving, mind-bending philosophies that probably only they can see, and if you can't then they just say - Oh, you know what? Its not made for your intellect.

However, if you still don't believe me, go ahead, try your luck and test your intellectual capacity.

Plain Boring
10 March 2023
If you have watched The Walking Dead, A Quiet Place, I am Legend or any other post-apocalyptic movie or show you've seen this show already. I am already on the third episode and I can tell you this show is no different. You already know what's gonna happen so there is no surprise element to keep you interested. You have the typical veteran hero plagued with his personal traumas that he gets in the first episode. The same old teen brat who mouths F-word at repeated intervals. You have the typical sidekick with the hero. The production values are high but I would choose The Walking Dead over this garbage.

An Unimpressive Puppetry Act
3 September 2022
When you are making a remake of such an excellent cinema there are high expectations to fill in. I already knew that it would be very hard for Akshay to pull off such a performance with a plot that doesn't settle. Even if I do not compare Cuttputtli with Ratsasan it fails to impress in many areas.

The lead cast Akshay and Rakul are not convincing enough. In fact, Akshay's age is clearly visible in few close up shots. Also, he cannot pull off an emotional scene. It is hard to know if he is crying in pain or giggling on some Twinkle Khanna one-liners. Rakul is just beautiful, nothing else. The supporting cast does balance some of the scenes but even they can do so much when they dont have enough scenes. The songs and the romantic equation scenes ruin the momentum of a thriller. Was there even a need for songs? The background score doesn't induce any feeling of anxiety or nervousness.

The climax is rushed and to me it seemed like the director already assumes that most people have seen Ratsasan and therefore not much effort has been put to finish off the story the rigth way.

If you haven't seen Ratsasan, or are not into dubbed movies you may still go ahead and give it a try, but if you have seen Ratsasan you can skip this one and save couple of hours of your life.

On the other end of the spectrum to Anurag's Black Friday
8 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday is the highest point of cinematic brilliance with regards to capturing the 1993 Mumbai Blasts, this one is the deepest darkest crater.

It's Deshbhakti for Dummies.

Jackie Shroff plays Omar Hafeez who was a victim of partition when he was 5 which means he was born in 1942. So, in 2019 (considering that this movie was shot in 2019) he should be around 77 years old, but he doesn't look like in the 70s.

Aur uska jo bhi age hain movie mein, he is shown as this mastermind who is going to change Hindustan ki kismat, per unfortunately for him ab tak Hindustan ki kismat nahi badal sakaa.

What kind of mastermind is he then? Udhar POK mein baith ke hila raha hain, apne beto ko foreign mein padha raha hain. Phir Jaisalmer mein dhabe pe waiter bana deta hain. One hell of a career graph that is.

Phir he says to Bilaal, ab waqt aa gaya hain woh 600 kilo RDX use karne ka.

Ab waqt aaya? Kya mahurat nikal raha tha ab tak?

It's like Omar had this Ghajini moment after 26 years and he says to Bilal arre woh apna DMart mein aate ka bori pada hain woh use karte hain na.

I can go on and on and on...but you get the point...right?

The Confusion is Should You See It or Not?
26 July 2021
If you scroll down the review list you will find plenty of He-Man fans thrashing the series and calling it bait and switch and some that appreciate the radical new storyline.

It's not that the show has nothing good at all.

The animation quality is very good compared to the 80s show.

However, that's about it.

One of the main reasons why most people are giving it a poor score is because it's practically not a He-Man show. Teela takes the lead here and her character isn't flesh out well.

The plot is very radical so if you're expecting the 80s show, you'll be deeply disappointed. If you go in with a blank mind, chances are that you might like the story.

I think Netflix needs to seriously rethink before coming up with Season 2.

Janusz Pozniak is the true winner
29 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The show started well, but as you move ahead you'll find one irritating and narcisstic contender that ruins the entire show, that's Deborah. The judges clearly are biased towards her because she keeps crying about how she is struggling in a man's dominated industry. So, the show chooses the winner based on politics and feminism, rather than on pure talent and skill. For the judges a potato is more floral than a dandelion. Seriously? This is exactly what happened in another Netflix show - Interior Design Masters where Cassie Nicholas won the competition despite her horrible interior design ideas. Netflix needs to evaluate these shows before they drop online. As an audience, we pay for watching the real talent, for politics we have plenty of politicians already giving us daily dose of drama on TV.

A Comic Tribute to the Ramsay Brothers
24 May 2020
Ramsay Brothers are the pioneers of the horror movie genre in the 1980s and have more than 30 horror movies under their belt. Shaitaan Haveli is a great comic tribute to these legends. This web series has all the ingredients used in a B-grade horror movie of the 80s and 90s. However, Varun Thakur smartly makes it more than a tribute to the horror films. It covers other topics like nepotism and opportunism in Bollywood, poor treatment of women in the industry, and other issues within the industry. Although, it is not a perfect laugh riot, but certain characters like Mahua (chudail) has some of the best lines that keep you entertained. If you are looking for some unique content add Shaitaan Haveli to your list. Absolutely Recommended.

Absolute Misfire
22 May 2020
Seeing Anurag Kashyap, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Ila Arun, Raghuvir Yadav, and Swanand Kirkire all in one movie seems like a dream come true. On top of it, director Pushpendra Nath Misra (of the Taj Mahal 1989 fame) adds to the list. While the trailer might seem impressive, I must say I am utterly disappointed with this movie. The weakest link of the movie is the story and therefore the stellar starcast can do no better. Anurag Kashyap and Ila Arun both stand out in their performances. If you think I'm one of those SRK and Salman fans, well let me tell you I'm not. I love offbeat films but this one just doesn't fly. Even if you're looking for time pass you might want to skip this one and let it disappear in the universe. I hope Choked is going to live up to the expectations.
