Aquaman (2018)
Tried way too hard to make aquaman look "badass"
Jason made for some good eye candy though. And Heard's character had a few impressive stunts.
But overall really boring, constantly forcing a punch first ask questions later mentality into Aquaman which didn't really feel very natural.
Also can we stop the obligatory straight romance side plot, it's getting old.
The Cat in the Hat (2003)
Stands well on its own
I didn't live in america as a kid and english isn't my first language. So the only contact I had with doctor Seuss during my childhood was through the movies. And I watched Cat in the Hat over and over again. I decided to watch it again today to see if it still holds up.
Honestly, to me it does.
It's colorful, cartoonish, over the top and fast-paced. I guess you could argue it's innapropriate, which makes sense. But I didn't notice that as a kid. I surely do now.
Somewhat awkward at times, but really enjoyable. Stands well on its own.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Good take on childhood trauma
Realistic view on sexual abuse survivors, not much graphic imagery (of the actual child abuse), subtle memories.
Abuser presented as an actual "harmless" person who the parents trusted. So much as to make us believe the kids lied about the abuse for a part of the movie. Which is very realistic, for real life abusers are often close to the kids, someone trusted.
"He's not after us because we lied. He's after us because we told the truth." That line really settles the fear to me, more than anything else to be honest.
The adults in the movie are pretty disapointing though, their silence is understandable at first but becomes a bit frustrating and annoying after a while.
All in all, great movie, iconic, all that stuff. But the creepiness of child sexual abuse, the idea of helplessness is what hits home for me.
The Nightmare (2015)
Atmospheric
Pretty immersive, good look into the people's head. Not really trying to convince or explain anything, just wonder.
Not quite a documentary, not quite a horror movie. Fear comes from the creepy atmosphere and interesting stories.
