Mary Poppins (1964)
5/10
Thin on plot
6 January 2019
It might be because I didn't watch this when I was a child and don't feel nostalgia towards it but I found it to be a tad overrated. The movie does have a certain charming quality but the plot is nothing to write home about. There are some very catchy musical numbers and Julie Andrews is great in the main role but the movie just feels like a hodgepodge of ideas and quirky imagery that doesn't lead anywhere for most of its running time. The most interesting elements of the story happen towards the end and the conclusion is satisfying. For the most part however, the movie was just alright, certainly a bit of a letdown, especially after recently watching the Sound of Music which I thought was excellent and much better than Mary Poppins.
