It's an imprint.

Warning: Spoilers
Jill (Brianne Davis), who is blind, inherits a manor from an aunt she never met. She goes out to the manor and stays there with two friends while ghosts and "imprints" haunt the house.

The film was rather boring and at no time scary. C. Thomas Howell has a minor role near the end. Made for TV quality.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

One of those movies where the musical score can hurt the impact of the movie itself
jordondave-2808519 August 2023
(2007) The Haunting of Marsten Manor HORROR

Straight-to-rental haunted house flick edited, produced and written by Dave Sapp (also credited as cinematographer and director) and Julie Sapp (also credited as musical) that has teen blind girl Jill (Brianne Davis) and her two friends of Rob (Ken Luckey) and Erika (Christine Woods) staying with her at an abandoned mansion, who she inherited from her aunt, Dorothy (Janice Knickrehm) eventually discovering that theirs some dark hidden past that needs to be uncovered and acknowledged! Acting could've been better, but the second rate non scary musical score is what hurt this film the most.

Don't watch this
Cronos721 August 2008
This movie appears as if it was made as a junior film project. I just watched this movie in a mixed age group, and everyone disliked it immensely - hate is a strong word. This movie had a bit of Jesuspower in it, we questioned if it was made by a church.

The acting is terrible. It's as if the casting department, if it existed, asked four random people to star in the movie. There's one scene that involves a black woman and a "black" child. We rewound the DVD and took a second look, and all concluded that the child is Indian. Passing off an Indian child as black is strange in context. Also, we think the male lead is wearing women's jeans.

The Haunting of Marsten Manor: Starts bad, ends awful
Platypuschow29 April 2018
Whenever I see "The haunting of" I assume the worst, in fact who am I kidding? When I see that a movie is ghost themed I generally do. As much as I love horror that sub-genre rarely delivers and is commonly an area taken by independent film makers.

This is a disastrous little haunting movie that tells the story of a frustrated girl stricken with blindness who is left an enormous manor in her late aunts will.

I'd continue, but honestly the plot is an absolute mess and isn't one I'd like to even have a go at explaining.

So we've established that the plot is dire, now how about the cinematography? the soundtrack? the cast? Honestly no boxes are ticked here, everything is embarassing.

And then we have the religious angle. Our heroine is frustrated and angry that she is now blind and her faith is left shaken. How can she possibly believe in a magical cloud man who impregnated a woman with himelf after creating a world full of talking snakes unicorns and giants......who would make her blind? Seriously?

The only thing that could have made this worse is if it had been found footage, thank Odin for small graces.

The Good:

Not so much

The Bad:

Looks like a daytime US soap opera

Seven shades of awful on every front

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

I need to filter out all movies that begin with "The Haunting of"

Terrible writing. Terrible cinematography.
UtahMom31 January 2010
My husband is a writer & I have worked in film (on numerous films as well as television series for CBS). I like indie-films & am all for supporting locals. My husband & I suffered thru 80 mins of this film which really made NO sense. The screen play was scattered at best. There was nothing frightening. It was just random. The flashbacks really didn't make sense - they didn't really contribute to the supposed point of the story. Add to the horrendous screen writing, the uber amateur photography and it just screamed beginner. I am shocked it was presented in a film festival. Not to be harsh but I have seen better cinematography and screen writing in productions produced by groups of high-schoolers. Now I know why I haven't heard of David & Julie Sapp in the professional circles in Utah.

Charmingly Spooky!
randburgoyne5 April 2017
The Haunting of Marsten Manor is a great Halloween movie for all ages. Great story-line, scary special effects, believable characters. There's a mystery to that old house and the ghost of Kate Marsten tries to reveal the secret. In the process she helps a young girl, Jill, learn about her connections to her ancestors and how to deal with her own handicap.

I would have rated it 10 but sometimes the dialog lags and slows the story - but that's only because we are more keen on fast moving TV shows.

This has become a classic in our DVD library!

A girl buys a mansion that is more than meets the eye.

A fun flight into fright! This film is imaginative and has a touching twist. Despite the low production value, it is impressive for the budget! It seemed well thought out and decently acted. It is a good flick for a late night. There are a few things that could be improved but to be perfectly honest, those things could have been cleared up with a little more funding. I die film is difficult and you have to just do what you can.

Great Spooky Story
KM_39131 March 2017
No, this movie isn't for everyone, but if you're like me and enjoy that quirky, low-budget scary movie that comes along every once in a while, then "The Haunting of Marsten Manor" is a real treat. No, it doesn't look like a Hollywood movie. It has that home-made feel that makes it all the more creepy and scary. The effects are great, and the Civil War ghosts (including C. Thomas Howell) are a unique element. Approach this film with the right mindset, and you just may find yourself "spooked!"

Warning: Spoilers
This low-budget project features Brianne Davis as feisty Jill, who gives her obnoxious lawyer short shrift when he attempts to patronise her when revealing the contents of his recently deceased aunt's will. Jill is blind and is still coming to terms with people's reactions to her. A possible stroke of good fortune comes about when it is revealed her estranged aunt has left her home – a spooky old mansion.

I mention the low-budget production values because this can put some viewers off. I bore people rigid by saying that independent films are only constrained by their lack of finance, and better that than to have the project diluted by the creativity-sapping, restraint-soaked wishes of more mainstream organisations. And yet it is true. If you want spectacular stunts and humanity-stripping CGI, this won't be for you.

If you wish to look beyond superfluous production gimmickry, there is much to enjoy here. Writer/director David Sapp makes the most of his locations and particularly the Manor itself. The three main players Davis, Ken Luckey and Christine Woods (as Jill's two good friends Rob and Erika) are terrific naturalistic and unaffected performers. Above all, their friendship is real and we can relate to them as people. When Jill starts seeing apparitions, she optimistically believes her eyesight may be returning.

The pace doesn't pick up, but neither does it falter and there are a few decent scares. The most effective for me concerns Jill's audio diaries – when playing back her latest entry, there are other noises in the background. Of course, people being people, an element of distrust grows amongst Rob and Erika, and for a time it is entirely possible (though unlikely) that one of them is deliberately trying to unnerve poor Jill.

The end is satisfying. And no, Jill does not magically recover her sight. She does, however, become more accustomed to her situation. Ultimately, 'Marsten Manor' is a decent chiller and well worth your time.

Incredible movie!
FilmLover-419 February 2007
Saw this movie at a film festival in Orem, Utah. Heard the budget was rather low, and the story, quality, and concept -- with redeeming message for a horror film -- blew me away. Make sure you rent this one for a scary movie with a heart.

The main leads are all actors on the rise. They did a great job portraying the emotions involved in the story. One of the supporting actors, Julie Sapp, was convincing as the main "ghost" in the story. She was downright scary! She apparently also was a co-writer, co-director-, co-composer, co-everything on this film with her talented husband, Dave Sapp.

Imagine what will happen the next time this duo gets more of a budget and makes their next film!

An enjoyable independent film
aemckenziepro27 July 2019
Good storyline, not unique, but satisfactory. Dialogue was believable. I enjoyed it. The musical score was very good. Some of the actors were better than others but I think that all in all, it was a good, watchable horror film. It has atmosphere and good special effects. I can tell you there are plenty of major motion pictures that aren't as watchable. Well done!

It Gave Me Chills
amjojo6 March 2007
"The Haunting Of Marsten Manor" is an enjoyable movie. I saw this film at a film festival and again when it came to theaters. It's a film people of all ages will enjoy.

It's a supernatural thriller with redeeming values. It has a lot of twists and turns I didn't expect, that I enjoyed a lot. I got chills many times during the movie!

The 3 main actors did a great job as well as the ghost (Julie Sapp) and the soldier (C. Thomas Howell).

C.Thomas Howell adds a lot to the film. I've loved him since "The Outsiders"!

I think the writers are talented and are a great duo. This is actually the first film for the filmmakers. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of their films.

You leave the movie feeling happy that you saw it. Find it and see it!

Nice suspense thriller
p_dammeyer29 March 2017
I am a fan of suspense style thrillers like Hitchcock Movies and The Twilight Zone series. Here you have three college type kids trying to figure out what's going on with this crazy house. Why would someone just give the main character this old house? One is a scientific type, one character is the caring guyfriend who could be more but is he the trouble maker or friend, the other who lost her faith because of a genetic disorder and is angry at everyone. It's a good story and it keeps you wanting a little more just as it ends.

There are good film techniques to help catch that bullet that grazed someone's arm and it was just nice not to see a whole bunch of gore.

Terrible movie
ajtroemn9 August 2011
The acting was extremely wooden, with the female lead using her disability as an excuse to stand perfectly still and not act. The male lead's only memorable line out of the entire movie is "What?" (repeated often), coming up only second to his memorable portrayal of the line "Huh?"

The stage dressing was also extremely odd, with rooms in the same house having wildly different furnishings, from extremely ornate with hardwood floors in one room to cheap carpeting and blinds in the next. Lighting was also terrible, as it looks like they tried shooting some shots in an actual house, and blue-tinted day to look like night.

With that said, both my wife and I love to watch terrible movies to point out how awful it is, and this movie did not disappoint. Will recommend to internet movie reviewers for many lulz.

Excellent movie
pinkrosesforshari8 April 2019
One of the greatest films I've ever seen. The story is clever and the outcome at the end is surprising again and again. Julie Sapp's acting ability shows much diversity in one short movie as Kate the spirit. No smut or other garbage to taint the simple yet effective point this story makes. I would love to see more movies like this one!
