Strong world building for an unexpected story
Thomas_Davison2 September 2023
For many sci-fi animated movies, audience captivation is driven purely by world building. Neon scenes and expansive horizons are often used to draw attention from a weak story. Not so in this beautifully animated sci-fi detective drama. The story finds the perfect balance between much loved detective clichés and unexpected turns in a story line, that has no need for smoothing by over hyped futurism. Despite this, the imaginative graphics cleanly place the viewer into the future, pushing us just far enough into the 'what could be' to retain a believability that compliments the story. This should be on your list of sci-fi movies to see before you die.

Felt longer than it is, in good way.
thebackofmyhouse9 May 2024
The world building really elevated this movie. It felt like there was a tv season's worth of material compressed into a 1.5 hour movie, but it worked, and it worked wonderfully. The world world was well thought-out, everything fit together well.

It's about a private investigator and her robot partner investigating the disappearance of a college student. As we learn more about the case, we also learn about the world this story is set in. This movie is like a perfect showcase for "show, don't tell". There's very little exposition, if any.

It's one of the best sci-fi movies I've watched recently, animated or otherwise. Highly recommended.

Surprisingly Good!
virus-kj200611 May 2024
This was a surprisingly good thriller for adults; I wasn't expecting such attention to detail and story.

The animations and backgrounds are well-made. Although they may not stand out by modern art standards, they are enhanced by carefully designed details and innovative ideas. The characters are very well written and designed - I really liked Carlos. The way the futuristic world functions is also thoughtfully constructed; there are many small details that make the movie feel very realistic.

On the other hand, everything moves quite fast, and some important characters or events are only briefly shown. 'Mars Express' needed a bit more screen time to better develop these elements.

Overall, it is a solid sci-fi film.

Live on ... dream on
kosmasp23 September 2023
No pun intended - this Science Fiction animated movie is really going for it. Asking questions, but also being as hardcore as it can be. No prisoners taken - starting off quite mean and lean ... and not really stopping. To the degree where you may wonder (at least in the beginning), who is supposed to be the main character here. You take your pick ... maybe you are right.

Animation is well, but it is the themes that do work. What is life? What are our dreams? And can they live on? What would that mean for the remaining population and our loved ones? It is not that those questions are in your face .. but there are there ... and there may be a solution the movie proposes ... a lot to digest, a lot to take in ... and a lot to let out ... out in the open (space) ... no pun intended.

Well that was awesome.
EM-6907925 November 2023
The movie made me feel the full spectrum of emotions. I laughed, cried a bit, was moved by the deep repercussions of the story. Could've run for 30 minutes more and I wouldn't have been mad

It's definitely a beautiful movie too. Animation is good, despite a few low-fps sequences, it still works because of the hand drawn art style and crazy backgrounds. Knowing what the crew went through, I understand the need for some simpler parts. Designs are inspired, threading perfectly between the obvious references and something really personal. Music's very good and the overall sound mixing was perfect.

For a first movie, Périn and Sarfati really put the bar extremely high, I'm really wondering what their next move/movie will be. But first, time to rewatch this one.

A beautiful looking film, wish the ending was different
moviemanmo9739 May 2024
While this might not be a genre bending film there is much to like about it. Starting with the beautiful animation style that is very fluid, colorful and detailed at every turn. The 2D art style meshes well with the story and its futuristic vibe. The music and sounds also compliment the overall feel of the film. The English dubbed version is well done with each voice suiting the characters perfectly. The dialogue is always purposeful providing context or aiding in the characters development. The characters however are not strong enough to be memorable. Even the villain is very stereotypical.

There are some funny moments but just enough to keep things light hearted. The pacing and structure allow for an easy viewing experience. There are some action and chase sequences which break up the exposition but nothing too over the top. The film was fine when it was a mystery thriller but when it changes course to try and be something with a deeper meaning it takes a plunge. Ultimately the ending was a letdown leading to a lower rating. This is still a good film but the ending was underwhelming.

Very cool world, good enough characters
harrizzn9 May 2024
Visual style reminiscent of Promare, sci fi-cyberpunk world building reminiscent of I,Robot. Immersive soundtrack. That's what this movie does the best.

I also loved all the little details of the future tech: TV screen that moves to wherever you're looking, a bottle topper that acts as another barrier to prevent AA members from drinking, etc.

The weak point is the plot in my opinion, it's just average and I don't think the characters have enough backstory to really make us care deeply about them. These don't ruin the movie, but it does everything else better.

Overall, I would recommend this one. Especially for Sci Fi lovers.

The cyberpunk neo-noir story, à la française
LikeallHungarians5 May 2024
All the Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep? Tropes are well-worn by now (notwithstanding the updated understanding--and not--of these technologies), but this French anime is worth existing if only for being another example in major motion picture theater chains of how much cooler a world we could be living in.

The movie is most successful when it's being a thriller.

I do appreciate the makers of this picture actually trying to depict the more metaphysical cyberpunk scenes (jacking into a brain-farm; transcending one's robot body into a collective digital conscious), even if the success is only relative (anti-climactic lines of code; a 2001: A Space Odyssey redux, respectively).

This superflat animation--which dips into some digital animation action and vehicle sequences--calls attention to itself.

"Mars Express" completely blew our minds
cutie712 May 2024
This anime plunges you into a futuristic world, brilliantly mixing elements from sci-fi legends like "The Matrix," "I, Robot," "Terminator," "Blade Runner," and "Ghost in the Shell." Even with these nods to the classics, it manages to carve out a fresh and original niche for itself. The animation detail is out of this world, capturing every gritty aspect of life in Mars' capital city. The team-up of private detective Aline Ruby and her android partner Carlos Rivera is both unique and captivating, making it hard to peel your eyes away from the screen.

What really caught me off guard was the depth of the storyline. There are layers of subtle hints and foreshadowing intertwined with multiple plot threads that converge flawlessly in the finale. The storytelling is both elegant and understated, perfectly executing a "show, don't tell" style. The ending wraps up the complex themes in a neat, satisfying way without being too explicit. From start to finish, "Mars Express" is an absolute masterpiece, with a rich, engaging narrative that keeps you thinking long after it's finished.

Good Animation

Warning: Spoilers
I saw Mars Express, starring the voices of Lea Drucker-Last Summer, War of the Worlds_tv; Daniel Njo Lobe-Le Code_tv, Marseille_tv; Mathieu Amalric-The French Dispatch, Quantum of Solace and Genevieve Doang-Wakfu_tv, Munch_tv.

This is an animated sci_fi thriller that reminded me a little bit of Blade Runner-it has a detective working with and against robots in the future. It takes place in the 2200's where Lea, a human, is a private detective that is hired to find Genevieve, another human. Daniel is Lea's android companion that used to be a human but was converted to a robot after his death. The trail starts on Earth and leads to Mars, where Mathieu runs a robotics company that is up to no good. The animation is good and there are different types of robots in this futuristic world. I liked the killer scorpion looking ones in particular. The only problem I had was with the story itself-it was a little hard to follow at times. The film was made in France and used mostly French voice actors.

It's rated NR but has violence, language and sexual content-partial nudity-and has a running time of 1 hour & 28 minutes.

It's not one that I would buy on DVD but it would be alright to stream.

French Cyberpunk at its finest
calahao10 May 2024
At first glance, Mars Express may seem like Blade Runner, having a similar premise, and indeed it homages previous cyberpunk stories, like one scene bringing to mind the Million Machine March from the Animatrix. However, it manages to be a fresh intro into this genre.

Great help in this department is the animation, which is almost infrographical in nature. There are surreal mental scenes, but some robots designs are appear in down to earth scenes as well, like the cat robot at the beginning.

Overall, a creative, imaginative science fiction world full of bright aesthetics and clever themes and motifs.

great world building
SnoopyStyle16 May 2024
It's the future. Robots are ubiquitous. Aline Ruby is a private investigator working from Mars. Her partner is an older model robot with the memories of Carlos Rivera. Chris Royjacker is the tech guru of robotics. Aline gets hired to find two missing girls and that leads to a vast conspiracy in the robotic world.

This is a French animated film. The world building is amazing. It has a bit of Asimov, neo-noir, and Philip K. Dick. I wouldn't mind somebody try to bring this world into cinematic reality. I'm fine with the story mostly. I would like for it to hit harder on the neo-noir side. I also want Carlos to end up with something else. Mostly, I really enjoy this world.

From shallow and derivative to downright stupid
glock7825 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Barely a veneer of science thinly painted over third-rate crime fiction, told poorly, without insight or idea it would want to convey, while aping other, older, now even classical examples of the genre.

Or in other words, it's like a child or an AI copied Ghost in the Shell, trying to conceal that by splicing in "adult" scenes or themes it lacked understanding of. And those are just the thematic and conceptual crimes of this product - cause this is not art but merely something produced for consumption. Content if you will. Mere information masquerading as expression.

On the artistic level, this would be some pretty good animation back in the 1990s. Today, it is clearly a cheap 3D animated product, shaded to appear hand-animated. So, no artistry there. Just a lot of manual and machine labor.

Plotwise it is clearly a pile of disjointed scenes, poorly strung together by a paper-thin excuse for a mystery which, within the confines of the story - should not and could not exist. From corpses rotting in ceilings where police can see through walls, 3D cameras literally everywhere but also absent everywhere or there'd be no story, all the way to robots suddenly having a religion and an afterlife - everything feels copied and pasted or just tacked on. Even the title has NOTHING to do with the story, plot, themes or the ideas of the product. It is just tacked on. Something like "Mars Escape" (20 seconds of thinking about plot will give you that) would at least imply some kind of a thematic connection to it all... but even such simple ideas are beyond the reach of the people or AI making this product.

There is a lack of cohesion to the story or its world beyond the actions of main characters, even that being brushed off and forgotten at every turn. Often very awkwardly, particularly in the end, where the makers of this product are desperate to once again hide the obvious copy-pasting from Ghost in the Shell.

Thus, after presenting a world where there is a clear and obvious representation of life after death (for humans) - story chooses to ignore it because then nothing in it would make sense while at the same time product simply isn't done competently enough to actually explore such themes and ideas. Instead, we are out of nowhere presented with a real and demonstrative religion and afterlife for the robots - and apparently also humans living beyond death, though that is ignored as an option throughout the story, people permanently dying at every turn. Completely ignoring the fact that something like backing up or copying human consciousness into a central computer would be far simpler and a painfully more obvious solution than doing the same backing up with a robot body. Which is clearly presented as common.

In the end it was all about the big conspiracy where the CEO of the BigMegaRoyaleWithCheese Corp. Inc. Wants to pack all the robots onto a spaceship and send them into space so his biological computers living in jars would sell better - which is beyond idiotic. Particularly considering that it apparently dawned on the writer/director very late in the production that all those robots can't fit onto so few and rather cramped spaceships - so he has robots beam their "minds" onto the ship, leaving a large pile of bodies behind.

Robot bodies. Also known as, in some cultures, as robots. It's a world where human minds can be copied into robots. Reprogramming robots would be as difficult as sending an over-the-air update to that pile of robot bodies. Also known as robots.

How will any of that increase the sale of brains in jars? Also, how will a brain in a jar do any physical labor previously done by a robot? Is the CEO a moron? Are all the other people running the company (helpfully showing their faces on a giant screen as they all unanimously vote to kill the CEO in order to hide the mess he created) also complete morons? Is that the message? Capitalism is morons all the way down?

But hey, what to expect from someone who doesn't know that gravity on Mars is about 38% of that on Earth - something Edgar Rice Burroughs, writer of Tarzan, understood and incorporated into his pulp series about John Carter. Back in 1912.

Jérémie Périn has presented his ignorance and lack of understanding of both the genre and the subjects he tried to incorporate and dare I say even explore in this almost 90-minute pile of derivative, shallow and moronic waste of time.

If you are not a robot or AI created to write positive reviews or someone whose brain serves as merely thermal and sound insulation for the oral cavity I'd advise spending that time on something more intellectually and emotionally fulfilling. Like washing dishes or sorting socks.

Top notch

The best animation I've seen by in European Production. Chapeau!

Fascinating world, ingenious production design and believable characters, with flaws, demons to face and challenges to overcome. What surprised me the most is the density of information, small hints, little foreshadowing and oh so many threads coming together one after the other. In the end, all makes sense, but without being over explained. Elegant, that is how the story is written, subtle and perfectly crafted. In the past decade we've seen so much potential lost in science fiction, because every film tried to be a spectacle, and please even to the casual viewer. But Mars Express delivers on every front. Show don't tell, that's what happens here. What a masterpiece.

Everything was going great and then it crashed in it's last minutes
matiasdevaglia23 May 2024
Good animation, excellent worldbuilding, interesting characters, exciting action sequences and an intriguing plot. What else could we hope for? A good ending, instead of this rushed convoluted mess, that makes the entirety of the characters actions in the movie completely inconsequential. I'm not kidding. Everything our protagonists do, every mystery they uncover, is ultimately pointless. I understand what the filmmakers where going for and perhaps it could've worked in a longer format, but less than 90 minutes wasn't enough time to properly stick the landing. I don't regret watching Mars Express, because 90% of it was awesome. But that ending is such a letdown I'll never watch it again and I can't recommend it to others.

It's a movie I'll watch again
mehmetyigili13 May 2024
I wanted to write a review immediately after watching the French animation film "Mars Express." Although it's not widely known or popular yet, it's clear that it will make a name for itself soon.

Firstly, I can say that it offers a gripping experience with its incorporation of science fiction and detective elements. The atmosphere is beautifully crafted, with vibrant and dynamic use of colors, giving you a sense of watching something both very plausible and highly creative for the future. I'm sure its approaches will inspire many films in the future. I must also mention that it provides a visual feast with its animation quality, character designs, and background drawings.

The film is based on a detective-themed story and successfully keeps the audience in suspense from beginning to end. The deep and meaningful friendship between the main character and their partner adds an emotional depth to the story. If you consider it from a story-focused perspective, the ending might feel a bit open to interpretation and rushed, which might not satisfy everyone; this is where I deducted a point.

Note: I've started following Jérémie Périn. He's behind a rather unknown animated series called "Lastman," which I'll give a chance.

Mars Express: A Thrilling Sci-Fi Adventure
allthepretty16 May 2024
"Mars Express," the French animated sci-fi film directed by Jérémie Périn, takes viewers on a visually stunning and thought-provoking journey set in the not-so-distant future. The film combines elements of mystery, action, and philosophical introspection, creating a compelling narrative that keeps audiences engaged from start to finish.

The story revolves around Aline Ruby, a classic hard-boiled private detective, and her android partner, Carlos Rivera. They are hired to track down a missing scientist on Mars, a mission that quickly spirals into a web of intrigue involving corporate conspiracies, artificial intelligence, and the complex relationship between humans and technology. The dynamic between Aline and Carlos is one of the film's highlights, showcasing a blend of camaraderie and tension that adds depth to their characters.

The animation in "Mars Express" is nothing short of spectacular. The film's creators have crafted a vibrant, futuristic Mars that is both beautiful and menacing. The color palette and art style bring the Martian landscape to life, capturing its stark beauty and the bustling energy of its colonies. The fluid animation and attention to detail make every frame a visual treat, enhancing the immersive experience.

"Mars Express" delves into several thought-provoking themes, such as the ethics of artificial intelligence, the nature of humanity, and the socio-political dynamics of a future colonized Mars. The narrative is layered, with twists and turns that keep the audience guessing. The film does an excellent job of balancing action-packed sequences with moments of quiet introspection, allowing viewers to reflect on the deeper implications of the story.

The film's soundtrack, composed by renowned artists, complements the futuristic setting and the unfolding drama. The music enhances the emotional impact of key scenes, whether it's a high-speed chase through the Martian desert or a poignant conversation between Aline and Carlos. The voice acting is top-notch, with the cast delivering performances that bring their animated counterparts to life. The actors' ability to convey subtle emotions and maintain the intensity of the plot is commendable.

"Mars Express" is a standout in the realm of animated sci-fi films. It combines a gripping storyline with stunning visuals and a thought-provoking exploration of futuristic themes. The film not only entertains but also prompts viewers to ponder the ethical and philosophical questions it raises. For fans of sci-fi and animation, "Mars Express" is a must-watch, offering a unique blend of action, mystery, and intellectual depth.

In conclusion, "Mars Express" is an underrated cinematic gem that showcases the best of French animation and sci-fi storytelling. It is a film that will likely be remembered for its artistic excellence and its ability to challenge and engage its audience on multiple levels.

Mars Express
M0n0_bogdan11 May 2024
Extremely derivative work but in a good way. It reminded me of The Matrix, Terminator, I, Robot, Fifth Element, Blade Runner, Scavengers Reign, Minority Report, Chinatown, Ghost in the Shell and other cyberpunk animes. And these are just a few I didn't even write down.

But the fact that it is derivative it doesn't matter that much. It's just a very interesting and kinetic animation about robots and robot A. I., all part of a big conspiracy conducted by a cool duo formed of a woman and her partner, Carlos, a human in the body of a robot. I can say I was just absorbed by the story and animation. It's not something new but it's just something I enjoy.

An update to the genre I'm glad haven't missed
bergguscha21 May 2024
(... and I am cursing the IMDB's tiny suggestion box that makes me starve every time)

Pantheon (2022) stirred up the memory of long forgotten but deep engraved tales of Ghost in the Shell and associated titles that came after that.

The quality of the TV series and this french film is to be admired, as I wasn't sure that preexisting works could be matched or even being surpassed.

The well known elements of different genres that serve as a narrative engine are well knit together. Good detective work comes a long way, Mr. Deckard. And the revelation that is the journey that I was glad to be a part of.

The eye candy that is the visuals and the ingenuity of what to show and what do those elements contribute to the visual narrative got me hooked. Scavengers Reign (2023) came to mind, while watching this film. The presentation is very fluid, although rooted in the analog film tradition, with obvious and much needed updates to camera perspectives and such. A good dramatization, camera work and ingenious visuals are probably the highlights for me.

Due to watching with English subtitles, a rewatch is needed as my eyes were on the text most of the time. But, it would probably be necessary anyway because the intricacy of different hints is something my mind could marvel repeatedly.

To have the same level of quality of production in a serialized format is probably a pipe dream, as I imagine a lot of work went into this work already. But, to be a pilot to a more narrative driven TV miniseries is a good selling point to any network studio.

Top quality Sci-Fi with great ideas.
interastral18 May 2024
It's very cool when writers / directors have the guts to actually tell a proper adult science fiction story, and that's what's going on here. The story is intelligent, gripping and well paced.

The art design, settings and sounds are fantastic, believable and fairly original. This is a visually attractive cartoon in the style of a French graphic novel for mature audiences. So glad there are still people doing this kind of stuff. Mars Express reminds me a bit of Renaissance, the black and white cyberpunk thriller from the 2000s and this flick is just as good in it's own way.

Cool concepts, plot, script and acting. Over all great stuff. A really enjoyable Sci-Fi. :-)

A sci-fi gem for all fans of the genre
vladhxh26 May 2024
I love sci-fi, but in my experience French sci-fi is usually a wishy-washy, strange faux-poetic and mostly pretentious view of the world that doesn't really make sense on close inspection. I actually expected something akin to "Scavenger Reign" - yes, it's pretty and strange, but no, the world doesn't make any sense from science / biology perspective.

But from the first minutes of this animated film, it gets you hooked. The story is actually pretty robust, the world is consistent and the animation is packed with cool action. So, it was a pleasant surprise and I cherished every minute of this film. Hopefully we will see more of this type of animation in the future.

In terms of the story - it's a cyberpunk/Detroit:Become Human mix, and frankly nothing too original, but it's made really well. There are some small cool ideas, shown in a matter of fact way, like an alternative to car airbags - you can see that a lot of thought went into building a believable tight world, which is rare. There are excesses of the "French" type, like the RoboCop style heavy robot mixed with Japanese-style military organics or the ending itself, which in my mind doesn't make too much sense, but given that I was on a great ride before that, I didn't really mind.

Recommend this to all fans of cyberpunk / tight plot sci-fi.
