Dame Juliet rules this show!
Sylviastel21 May 2005
I have been a found of Juliet Mills since I was a child. Little did I know that she would marry the gorgeous and 18 year old her junior, Maxwell Caulfield, from Grease 2. Not only that, they have been almost 25 years too. Besides, Juliet Mills' Tabitha would delight her departed godfather Lord Laurence Oliver and her godmother Vivien Leigh. Her acting father, Sir John Mills, should have guested once on this show. He died recently at 97 years old. While I am crazy about Juliet too, the show has improved since it's debut in 1999. I really wish Juliet won the Emmy Award last night. Without her, this show would have bite the dust like All My Children without Susan Lucci. I hope we can honor Juliet by getting her something else like an M.B.E.(Member of the British Empire). The last British born actress in daytime to receive this honor was Anna Lee in 1982 from Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. I know an M.B.E. is a lower honor than an O.B.E.(Officer of the British Empire), a C.B.E.(Commander of the British Empire) or Dame Commander of the British Empire but Juliet should be rewarded with something. Since nobody at All My Children appears not to care about Eileen Herlie who has played Myrtle Fargate since the seventies, maybe the Passions fans would be more willing to do something. It only costs postage! There is nothing much more than that. There is no $15,000 to upkeep a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame which Juliet deserves too. Anybody who knows anything about an M.B.E. knows that it goes to ordinary people who do extraordinary things or for years of service. But for soaps even in England, the M.B.E. has been bestowed upon British actors on Coronation Street and EastEnders. Please help me do something to honor this special lady.

Better than it gets credit for
ewwgirlgerms16 September 2003
Passions is pure entertainment. Complete with witches, orangutans, secrets, forbidden loves, great couples (even if they spend way more time apart than they do together), and comedy! There's a lot of funny moments that you just can't help but to laugh out loud over. The cast is superb!

A lot of people complain that it's so unrealistic. But that's what makes it "Passions." It's supposed to be different and a little unrealistic. I mean, how often do you see zombies wreaking havoc, witches casting spells, lovers being reincarnated, and orangutans changing an old lady's diapers in real life? If you're not into the unrealistic stuff and feel the need to complain, just don't watch. The rest of us get it and love it!

Ed Wood could have done better
noneabve19475 January 2008
I used to watch "Dark Shadows" and liked it. Of course I was a kid, it was the era of rebellion, and I thought Barnabas Collins had a great haircut. "Passions" is the work of morons with word processors. They hit the last straw with an orangutan in a nurses outfit!!! Sorry, if I want classy T.V. I'll go with reruns of "Dukes of Hazzard". (sarcasm) In all honesty, most T.V. shows ARE soap-operas. In a more refined version of the genre, the sub-plots of "The X-Files" went on for the entire run of the show. Same with shows like "Boston Legal"...a nite- time "soap" and tons-o-fun!! Any show is cool if you get into the characters and the plot line, no matter how weird. I can't stop watching "South Park", for example. Well, that's my beef for the day. I just can't believe a show like "Passions" is still on...... Robert

Show Slaps!
Dabby_Johnson5 August 2020
Fall of 2000 I was at my dirtbag homeboy Skippy's house. He was out scoring us some narcotics & I was geeked out of my mind, seriously struggling with sleep deprivation & cocaine psychosis & needless to say was just in general tripping. I hadn't watched any soaps since Days of Our Lives & Another World which I'd occasionally watch with my mom in the 70's & 80's. So I turned on the TV & figured catching up on some of these classics would help kill some time while I waited for duder to finish this important errand. I'd never seen Passions before so needless to say I was seriously freaked out to see it was full of fairies & witches & monsters & I thought I was imagining it all while wide awake. Was seriously a more terrifying experience than when I saw The Exorcist at the age of 5 & was all around a mind blowingly amazing time. Ya boy was mad stoked! Eventually duder came back & I did what I needed to do to take the edge off & went back home & told my girlfriend I was imagining a bunch of weird stuff while watching soap operas & she just laughed & said, "Honey, that's Passions." So on that day Passions became my favorite soap of all time & has held the top spot ever since.

This show's too slow!!
Angel-Marie25 May 2001
That's right! The storylines are way too long. I find myself watching All My Childern and Bold And Beautiful (they air at 1:00 and 1;30 in my city). The actors are great, I love their acting but the constant slow paced stories make the show about as stale as a old doughnut. You wonder why Port Charles is in 9th place in the Nelsons now!!

Greatest soap opera satire of all time
garthlotel28 February 2018
When you realise that this has to be satire, you can enjoy how hilariously terrible and downright insane this television show is.

The weirdest TV show I've ever seen.
new_releases27 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This show is very disturbing. I hate it. It's about a family called the Cranes, and there's also this woman who's a witch, but a good witch, who also has a little girl. The witch's house has these evil spirits in her basement. This isn't the disturbing part. The disturbing part is there's this freak, Vincint, who's a long lost son of the Cranes. He's queer, crazy, and a murderer. If that isn't enough to scare you, he wears this hideous costume, that makes him look half man, half woman. Sometimes he wears it, sometimes he doesn't. He looks normal without it, but when he's wearing it, half of his face is flesh, the other half is a Phantom of the Operah mask. Each half of his shirt is a different color, and his pants, one side is.. well, pants, but the other side is half a skirt. In addition, his hair is long and girlie.I was very disturbed by this show.

Story Lines are weak and do not make sense
drunken69god12 May 2003
I have watched passions for about 2 years. The story line about Eve and her sister does not make sense. Why does it appear that she is angrier at her sister than she is at her father. Why hasn't it come out that Gwen and her mother were responsible for Ethan losing his inheritance yet he ended up marrying Gwen anyway. I am beginning to get tired of the story as it never gets anywhere.

Silly enough to be fun(ny)
Triple0018 July 2001
This show IS lame and addictive. And I can't believe so many people feel the same way...it makes me feel sane!

I suppose a majority of people started out watching this with enormous criticism. At first, one would think that: 1. The acting is rather over-done, 2. The dialogue is pretty pathetic, and 3. The storylines perhaps a little predictable and extremely slow (so slow in fact, that you could NOT watch Passions for about a month and still know what's going on).

Personally, I have never been into soaps before, but somehow Passions intrigued me the most. My initial reaction was one of confusion as the show is not your average soap opera. Oh no. Not only does it contain the ordinary conflicts, scheming, scandal and obsessions of certain characters, but it also includes elements of comedy and the supernatural.

Admittedly, Timmy was the main reason why I got interested, as I couldn't figure out whether he was a dwarf/midget or a little boy. As it turned out he was actually a doll, but either way, there was more to Passions than this strange aspect of fascination. Of course you could never leave out the Charity-Miguel-Kay or the Gwen-Ethan-Theresa love triangles. Here, we can witness the stupidity and naivety of Miguel and Ethan as they live their lives totally oblivious to the fact that they are being chased by crazed and obsessed girls who would do anything to win their loves.

Whatever the reason, it is understandable why Passions is not accepted by everyone, but if you give it a chance, at least enjoy it for the laugh factor. It might even keep you begging for more.

Ewwwww...talk about cringe-inducing
gtc8313 February 2006
I watched a few months of this show when it came out. All I can remember is the ridiculously slow pace of everything. So today they showed the premiere episode on Sci-Fi, and all I can say is, good god, that was awful.

There's a woman who supposedly used to be Princess Diana's best friend (yes, THE Princess Diana). We get flashbacks to phone conversations she had with the Princess: "So, Diana, what time are you and Dodi coming over? Hello? Diana?" This stuff must have been written by a group of 12 year old girls playing make-believe at a slumber party or something. It's so poorly done it makes you cringe. Then there's the young couple spending the day making out and reciting prattle to each other on the beach. The scene is repeated, virtually verbatim, on five separate occasions. And then we've got the angry Mexican guy - did I mention the dialog is written by a group of 12 year old girls? Nowhere is this more evident than in the clichéd this-is-how-people-write-not-how-they-actually-talk rubbish that comes out of this guy's mouth. Even more unfortunate is the fact that when this actor was in school, no one ever took him aside and said "Hey buddy, this line of work just isn't for you". He speaks all his lines with that "I memorized this, and now I'm reciting it" emotive quality. As far as the writing, I found it impossible to believe that the folks who came up with this have ever written a high school English paper before, much less an actual script. Then there are a pair of teenage girls who unfortunately wound up with dialog for a pair of 6 year olds: "Oh, I've got a secret." "Tell me your secret!" "Promise you won't tell?" "I'm your best friend, you've got to tell me your secret!" Good lord, this is just putrid.

And don't even get me started on the completely out of place theme music that keeps intruding on every scene. Obviously it never occurred to these folks that the mood of the music should coincide with the mood of the scene. And then there's the constant cutting from one scene to another to another, apparently to give the impression that something is happening when absolutely nothing is.

To give you an even better idea of how truly awful this thing is, you'll notice that a lot of the other user comments mention the character of Timmy as being the best part of the show. Timmy is a 20 year old midget who plays a 5 year old kid, and talks like a combination of Minnie Mouse and Pee Wee Herman. Yes, that's the "best" thing about the show. What more can one even say? This show is as stoopid as stoopid can possibly get.

Fly on the wings of a bird...
TheGoforth5 May 2022
A soap opera which never lived up to its initial concept. With the New England setting and established backstory with occult themes, the stage was set for an incredible saga in the grand soap tradition. This promise of greatness was completely aborted however by the across the board poor acting, characters with a lack of dimension and scenes which were absolutely devoid of the mysterious or gothic romantic atmosphere which you would expect. Aside from that lovely theme tune, it was pitiful all around, and in the end, could only be embraced in certain quarters for how bad it actually was.

A classic NBC soap!
Catherine_Grace_Zeh19 July 2006
Ah, yes. I can remember not too long ago. At that time, one thing I would do each weekday was watch this classic soap opera. From that moment on, I was hooked on it. In addition, If you ask me, Alistair (John D. Reilly) really is diabolical. You would have to have seen some of the things he's done if you want to know why. I also enjoyed the days when Luis (Galen Gering) was on the show. Ever since Beth (Kelly McCarty) left the show, I haven't watched it as much. You'd have to have seen the show between 1999 and 2005 if you want to know why. However, this is still a good soap opera. In conclusion, I highly recommend this classic soap opera to all you die-hard NBC fans.

Different but OK
Dubs5 November 1999
I never watch soap operas. Every time I was home from school and tried to watch one, I was always mystified by the seemingly intricate plots. Besides, soaps seemed aimed at adult women and homemakers.

Not the case with Passions. Before I came back to college, I caught fifteen minutes of one episode and was hooked on what I saw. It wasn't good by conventional standards; the characters weren't deep or intriguing and the acting was relatively mediocre.

Yet the actresses were cute. All of them. And they were all relatively young. The youth factor just seemed like a big break from the typical soap operas I had seen in passing before, and that alone was enough for me to be interested. I disagree with the previous commenter who feels that Passions is for "little ones." I don't think many high schoolers would catch this show on TV, since it plays at 1 PM here, but it could really succeed because it appeals to the niche market of college students, who are willing to watch almost any kind of television. For example, my two housemates now watch Passions with me after they previously mocked me incessantly. The only show we used to watch together on a regular basis was Sportscenter.

The subplots are all fairly interesting, and as others have noted, kind of different than one would expect for a soap. The characters of Timmy and Tabitha are definitely a change. After he first opened his mouth, I wanted to beat up Timmy, or as he would say, "Dubs wants to punch Timmy in the face," but even he has grown on me. I can't wait to catch up with the show tomorrow.

I've been rewatching & WOW!!
emmybug2613 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
YouTube has all the full episodes available!! It's still so cringy! Awkward bad acting, storylines and scenes that drag on for weeks, no character development and they are always talking to themselves but oh my gosh.. still has addicting as it was in 2001!!!!!!! I can't wait to keep watching!! The most memorable storyline I remember the most from my childhood is the Sheridan/Lois/Beth baby kidnapping storyline! That clown freaked me out!! Great great great show and happy I get to relive my childhood memories!!! If anyone has a chance, race to YouTube to watch again!! Tabitha & Timmy are still so adorable and evil- it's great!

And it's so awesome to watch the beginning and see how Theresa, gwen, & Ethan met! Still drama and obsessed from day 1!

I MISS IT!!
pburkus8 October 2021
I started watching soaps in 1970. I had to stay home all day taking care of my twins and another child. This is today the one soap I miss the most. It was so unique and special. I especially miss it this time of year when the leaves are falling and Halloween is in the air...the fantasy, the drama and mystery and the coziness of the whole show. Yes, it was silly, but so much fun! Wouldn't it be WONDERFUL if it could come back. It would be a great escape that we all could enjoy.

Too slow, but funny.
wjewilliams@yahoo.com15 February 2003
This show would be so much better if the writing wasn't sooooo repetitive.

Passions is a show that should be taken simply at face value -- don't look beyond the surface...you'll be lost. Yes, it's rediculous and it's meant to be. Part of its charm is that it makes fun of its own genre.

Don't expect Oscar winning performances, although there are a few on this show that can act (unfortunately, they're offset by multitudes who can't), but expect to laugh -- whether it's meant to be funny or not!

gotta love it
gratcas14 November 2006
I don't know exactly why, but i love, i do get annoyed with them dragging out the plot forever, but there is that element to it will people end up with their true love, will they be true to their inner passion or will they stay where they are out of some moral obligation they feel they have to honor. If you haven't watched to show from the beginning then you have no clue and no right to judge it, you must understand the story and know the back history of the characters to see why they are who they are today, give the show a chance, i cant get enough of it, me and my friend everyday that we can are sitting in front of the TV engrossed in whatever new twist is happening on passions, hoping that the people that are meant to be together get together and stay together, all in all, i love it and hope you give it a chance

This is the best soap out there!
marrowness26 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is my favorite TV shows ever. I have watched Passions since it aired in July of 1999. At first I was entranced by the way this soap used the supernatural. It was very different from all other soaps on at that time.

This show has "calmed down" from its first years. At first it was all about witches, warlocks, good and evil, and portals to hell; but now it is more about love triangles, the dead coming back to life, and secrets coming out.

This show is aimed at younger audiences, such as myself. When I started watching it I was in 6th grade, and I have continued to watch it. If you ever get the chance tune in, have fun, and beware of the hidden passions...

A Great Show that slowly loses realism
tayz923021 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I began watching Passions when it began in 1999 and It's going to be sad when it ends at the end of this year. The series has became such a guilty pleasure for me and one of my favorite shows. The series became so good and I actually feared for the characters lives but the show has lost realism, I mean it's a Soap Opera so of course it's going to wacky and Passions has made it so much more wacky but the series stop seeming real by 2004. Characters kept dying and coming back, characters kept surviving multiple murder attempts and I realize because it's a soap opera this will happen. I also started watching it's NBC lead-in, Days of Our Lives in 1999 but stopped watching the show in 2005 when it became so boring and now Passions is just becoming stupid in it's final year. But even with all these complaints it is one of the best shows on TV and if it continued beyond 2008, I might just stop watching just like I did Days of Our Lives but although it will be sad when it ends, the series should end I think because it is getting dumber and dumber by each passing year but I will stick with it until it's end and if you've never seen this show and you somehow get the resources to watch old episodes, I recommend the entire series to watch but be warned the final years sometimes became hard to watch.

So Silly That you Have to go With it
TMC-416 August 1999
This is one of those shows that are so inane it just drives you in. Whether it's the simpleminded stories, corny dialog, or often amateurish acting. If the show was intended on playing it for laughs, then maybe what you see on screen would be easier to take.
