Decent premise, struggled with the payoff

Warning: Spoilers
SERIOUS SPOILERS AHEAD! Layover is the sort of film you catch once in a while when your not looking for it. I caught this film late at night on C5, and started watching it because I saw David Hasslehoff was in it. That guy cracks me up, just his name is kind of comical. The film itself is a pretty good idea and should be a bit better than it is. Its a thriller with a lot of twists. A lot! Maybe a few too many. The plot is pretty fast paced which is good and keeps things moving so you don't have to sit through any especially boring bits. It tells the story of businessman Dan Morrison (hasslehoff), who is paranoid that his wife is cheating on him and then goes and cheats on her at the airport with a woman who walks up to him and essentially says: lets go! This happens out of town in San Francisco during a layover, hence the title. There is a hilarious scene after Dan makes love to the woman at the airport. He stands up and puts on his glasses and they are cracked. The Hoff's expression is priceless. Shortly after though is the beginning of my issues about this film. I thought it would be pretty unlikely that Dan would accompany the other couple to dinner 10 minutes after sleeping with the wife. Also the bad guys rely heavily on Dan being co-operative. All it takes is for him to say no at any stage to just one of their requests of which there are many throughout the evening, then the plan is foiled. There is a scene in the car where Vicky says that she can't believe that she is doing this (leaving her husband) and Dan says: neither can I! Well, I'm not sure the audience can either Dan.

Even letting all this slide, maybe Dan is just a bit gullible, there is still trouble with the plot. To justify the various wild twists in the story there are a few loose ends that never get tied up. And the wife turning out to be part of it all at the end was a bit much. And if she was all part of it, why did she kill Jack. She was obviously deranged. Also the diamond motive at the end is weak. All these people went to so much trouble for some diamonds. Sheesh, it would have been easier and quicker to rob a bank surely! I don't really hold all this realism stuff against it though because you can pick apart a lot of movies! Overall Layover is a good enough action thriller. Fans of Hoff will love it and its still worth a watch even if you don't love him. Its a comfy film to watch, so catch it if its on.

Decidedly Average

I used to love Hasselhoff. When I was growing up, Knight Ride was the show to watch. I used to collect all the memorabilia and my mother even made me a birthday cake shaped like KITT for my 7th Birthday. Then later during my adolescence he gave us Baywatch which, for a lad moving through puberty, again was the greatest show on TV. Then I see Layover. Now Hasselhoff has still got it, but the script itself is awful. The plot concerns a chance liason during a layover in San Fransisco, and the sinister chain of events he stumbles into. Unfortunately, I worked out the major twist a third of the way into the film and had to sit through the rest of the movie just waiting to be proved right (very irritating I can tell you).

The movie does have it's good points though. It is fun seeing ol' Dave kick ass and go nuts. There are also some fine looking chicks in this. The problem is this film could have been great, unfortunately it is nothing special. Catch this if it's on TV and you aren't looking for any thing challenging. - 5/10

It IS what it IS

Warning: Spoilers
This is a rainy weekend film, the kind when you're alone and just relaxing and eating all the snacks in the house while you lie on the couch... I've seen much worse, movies that pass themselves off as ART, not just pure entertainment. And we need MORE entertainment, not less! The thing is, this movie wasn't even violent, because the shootings were somehow light! I guess because everyone was a criminal. I LIKED the ending very much! Adult fairy tale ending. Money, money, money, he's rich now... Hasselhoff looked terrific, he should do more films! Looks like he's one of those guys you either love or hate. Most people. I LIKE HIM.

Layover Is Both a Blessing and a Wretched, Awful Movie
boris8229 May 2002
Warning: Spoilers
David Hasselhoff. I've never understood why he's so beloved worldwide. He can't act, sing or dance (as one unintentionally hilarious scene oof him at a rave displays). Now comes Layover. This movie has to be seen to be believed. To call this a B-Movie would be an insult to the alphabet. For me, this movie is the funniest 90 minutes I have ever spent. I have seen many great comedies, but none had me on the verge of having a seizure from an overload of laughter. The first 30 minutes of the plot is actually good. It almost reaches Mamet "Heist and Con" territory. The rest is just a sleazy, violent, incredibly awful, accidentally funny movie experience. SPOILER ALERT: Check out some of the dialogue (I know them from memory, as I've seen this movie 3 times now):

DAN (Hasselhoff): "I'm so scared, I've got my balls coming up to my lungs."

Jack GiLardo (supremely mysoginstic, evil guy who goes against Dan): (to Dan) "Not a bad day's work, Danny Boy. Escaping from the cops and finding me. You've got more gonads than I thought."

SEXY GIRL speaking to Dan after having slept with him and then conned him twice: "I bet the last time you've been F*#$ked three times in 12 hours was in college."

Dan Responds:"Not even then."

OKAY JUST ONE MORE, HAHAHA:

Dan, speaking to a beautiful temptress that has supremely conned him: (describing himself) "A guy so nice, you f*&^ked him twice." -- it rhymes, get it? Well, Hasselhoff is an acclaimed lyricist/songwriter.

A SEX SCENE also appears in it, although it is filmed so awkwardly that a guy watching would be almost disturbed. What went wrong in this scene? The girl is pretty. An Italian model in real life. Could it be the fact that she and David Hasselhoff have sex on top of strange peoples luggage in some storage room? Or could it because she nearly falls off him at one point while unsuccessfully attempting to straddle him?

PRICELESS. I just can't get enough of this. This one has to make it to the bottom 100. And the greatest thing is that on German Amazon.com, the movie has received an average customer rating of 5,yes, count 'em up, 5 stars. That's the highest rating? Germans just love the guy. But I'm not dumping the Germans here, cuz some Americans I know enjoyed this too. They found it unpredictable and edgy! That sounds like a razor blade to me and getting sliced with it would be half as painful as watching this.

Anyone who loves campy and supremely hilarious yet unintentional comedies, please rent this.

Let me also point out the the "autuer" of this crap fest is Alan B. McElroy. This guy got a screenwriting masters degree from Columbia University. IVY LEAUGE! This could have been penned better by a drunk donkey. He also wrote the Spawn script. That was decent. I'll give the guy some slack.

I found this at my local Blockbuster. They carry a vhs and dvd version of it, but they don't have "Night of the Hunter" or "Rashomon." The world is coming to an end people.

Uneven script that could have been much better.

Watching this movie is a study in frustration. Just when things are going well there is a cheap device to make a transition. Without giving away the ending, it's possible to see the final betrayal of trust several minutes in advance.

What a thrill ride. And anything but predictable.
vchimpanzee18 November 2002
Warning: Spoilers
I was all prepared to write this off as a chick flick. David Hasselhoff sells electronic gadgets and he suspects his wife of cheating on him, when actually he is the one who cheats, on his trips to San Francisco (curiously, the other woman disappears for good a few minutes after the movie starts, never to be heard from again). He meets a diamond seller on the airplane and ends up 'referreeing' or 'chaperoning' a night out with the diamond seller's wife, since the husband is abusive to her (and there's another reason, but that would be a spoiler). From there, the movie is about as predictable as a certain president was honest. Hasselhoff gets arrested for murder, and to say anything else would spoil the movie. Let's just say nothing is as it seems, and then when you think you've got it all figured out, you don't. And you'd never expect this ending.

Pure garbage.
lookinglasself6 July 2001
Please people, don't support David Hasselhoff's post-Baywatch career. At least not when he's making movies like this. This film is the epitome of cliche and Alan McElroy has got to be the twin brother of Alan Smithee because this movie is pure garbage. I swear i've heard every spoken sentence from this movie in at least 10 other movies. Not only is it uncreative and unoriginal, it's poorly acted. I'm pretty sure that this was one of those one-take, one-week filmed movies. I can only recommend this movie to the few people who enjoy B-movies with the classic formulae of f-words, sex, and violence.

To all the others with taste (like me) avoid this banal, predictable, uninspired and cliched movie at all costs.

So-so action thriller
Kakueke22 September 2001
This somewhat typical action thriller starts off pretty inauspiciously, dominated by overtones about marital affairs, cheap foul language and banality, and Greg Henry's in-your-face bad guy. The second half serves to partially acquit it as the plot unfolds more and David Hasselhoff, the sucker protagonist, gradually becomes less of a sucker. Altho the pace of the second half is good, we are still waiting for something good, but that happens at the end with a surely unexpected twist. Not much depth but OK as a thriller to rent for an evening.

Looks Pretty Good
Charlie_Simons10 June 2005
Considering his Age, the Hoff looks okay in this hi-tech thriller. Pity the same can't be said for co-star Yvonne Scio. Whilst the former lad's favourite had the poise and certainly injected a bit of much needed glamour, it can hardly be said that the heart was there to match the smile. Indeed, I have seen more elbow grease in a broken elbowed (both elbows) shrew. As for Gregg Henry (Jack Gillardo), I have seen more eroticism in a nervous shrew being watched by his shrew mother.

don't get me wrong, the basic premise was good. Erotic terrorist espionage thrillers are far too thin on the ground at the moment. Too thin by five, six. Eight!

While it's a shame to see any character, esp. (especially) one played by the Hoff, indulging in extramarital activities (dirty rudeness with sexwomen), I had to enjoy the tastefully shot scenes between Hoff and Scio. He even broke his glasses!

The performance of Lane offered little other than the pedestrian titillation of a boy in a man's world. Besides his slight, and less than occasional aversions to the benign, he showed as much individuality as a pack shrew in a field of pack shrews.

Basically, whilst the actors tried desperately to make the most of a bad lot, even the Hoff couldn't salvage this dead wreckage.

Where did this terrific movie come from?
jessie-3920 July 2001
My wife and I enjoyed this very suspenseful movie. Not predictable and just a fine job by Greg Henry who is always the bad guy. Hasselhoff did a decent job and we enjoyed it thoroughly. Don't remember this movie even being in the theatres. It is well worth it and we enjoyed it thoroughly.

This movie is a good movie with a twisting story line
DarkPreznc14 April 2002
This was one of thoes suprise movies that when walking through your local movie store you walk right by. One day there was nothing to rent so I grabbed it. It was a shocker it was great, the movie just kept on changing and changing and in the end ended up being one of the best movies that i'v seen this year. Now I know that some cynical peaple just pass by and write it off as a bad movie just because it stars David Hasslehoff but hey this is easily david's best work. A must see, so watch it and give it a try.

Great Movie, great musical score!
JHank30 April 2005
I really like the twists in the story of this movie. It is easy to watch and has a good amount of suspense and humour. David Hasselhoff and Gregg Henry do a great acting job and the great directing and cinematography help to carry this mysterious story. OK, it seems to be quite obvious that this movie has been sponsored by Nokia (which makes some dialogues quite funny). I laughed a lot when I saw that scene in the beginning of the movie where Dan and Jack meet in the plane and Dan shows him that Nokia Communicator mobile phone, that he distributes around the globe... After all, this movie is worth giving it a try, even though the story has some weak spots which actually make this film even more likable!

Great Entertainment!
gkumnick27 July 2001
For whatever reason, it seems this terrific flick went straight to Video/DVD. I think it definitely had big-screen potential.

Alan McElroy should be commended for a great job. David Hasselhoff and supporting cast did outstanding work. I have always enjoyed "bad-boy" Gregg Henry, and it was a treat to see the beautiful and talented Sherri Alexander in a major film role...I bet we'll be seeing a lot more of this wonderful actress in years to come.

This movie has an exciting storyline with surprising twists. I highly recommend it!

Great Thriller
jazzmardi31 January 2010
Wow! I just finished watching "Layover" and it was indeed a very enjoyable film. If you like good, made for TV style thrillers, then I think you will enjoy this film. Yvonne Scio is very beautiful while David Hasselhoff gives a fine performance (not sure why there are so many naysayers here putting his acting skills down as he was very good) and Gregg Henry was perfect in his role. Although the storyline is improbable, it has great twists and and turns which at times will have you at the edge of your seat (well this viewer definitely was!). It is not your average thriller as some here suggest but a good, action packed movie that is sure to entertain.

"Layover" gets my thumbs up!

Spare me this kind of trash
guil1213 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This has got to be the worst ever. The directing, writing, acting is below average B ratings. I won't even mention the names of the director and writer as they aren't even worthy of a pan. But the terrible acting is. First off I don't see the magic in David Hasselhoff. I know he's a household name, but why? Because of his personal life, I've no doubt. For as an actor this film shows his talent to the fold. Boring, boring and boring. One expression on his face throughout - duh! He manages to take the terrible dialogue and make it even worse, if that can be believable. Can't see why he works at all. Gregg Henry as the villain comes off a bit better, but that's because he isn't in the film that much and you get enough of him in the beginning. Yvonne Scio as the so-called tramp is a bad Barbie doll and no acting ability. Her scenes are laughable. In fact the chemistry between she and Hasselhoff is just plain empty. Nothing. Nada. And the wifey-poo, played by Sherri Alexander, is a joke. She's not given that much and she manages to louse that up as well. So, please avoid this mess.
