The dating and mating game...
canndyman5 October 2020
After a an excellent first season, it was great to see Bottom back in 1992 for a new series, and this episode kicks the new series off in fine style.

Desperate for some 'birds' (and Richie just desperate for any action at all), he and Eddie enrol at Lily Linneker's video daring agency (Lily played hilariously by Lisa Maxwell), and find out which lucky woman the computer will match them with.

Eddie gets and rejects (the now-free agent) Sarah Ferguson - while, on the other hand, Richie appears to have struck lucky with a Moldavian countess called Natasha (wonderfully played by Helen Lederer) - but only after being rather economical with the truth about his means and status!

Their ensuing first date takes place back at Richie and Eddie's pad - Richie attempting to effect the character of a puffed-up member of the aristocracy 'roughing it' at his London bolthole, and Eddie roped in as his Butler.

The meal they have prepared doesn't go too well - and Eddie spends most of the rest of the show with his face covered in mashed potato. But the ruse seems to be working and, when Natasha is willing for Richie to whisk her off to his bed chamber, could it be that his luck has finally changed...

This is a rip-roaring episode full of the show's trademark slapstick, violence and belly-laughs, and definitely one of the best. A great way to kick off the second series, with lots more classics still to come!

Will Richie finally get to do it?

Richie and Eddie join a dating agency and entertain a female guest.

This is strong episode from series two that gives us some hilarious situations, funny lines and some good bits of trademark slapstick. Richie being in a position where he might finally 'do it' is a funny enough concept without such classic lines as the one regarding fox-hunts and the superb scene in the dating agency.

As with many Bottom episodes the main reason to watch it is Rik Mayall and this is one of his finest performances. His facial expressions, body language, energy, and delivery of punchlines are off the scales in terms of funny. He was blessed with more charisma and comic timing than most performers combined. On occasion it can tip over into the realm of annoying, but in this episode he nails every scene.

I think I first watched this episode when I was a 13 year old boy and identified with Richie having low self-esteem and being sexually frustrated. I wasn't used to seeing thirty-something characters on TV behaving so childishly crude and misogynistic. Even my Dad enjoyed it, not that he would have admitted it in front of my mother.

As over the top as it seems, there are plenty males out there who behave the way these two characters are portrayed (possibly without the level of violence). All you have to do is watch a group of lads on a night out when inhibitions go and its all there.

''Charity begins at home, and that's where it ends in our house!''

Warning: Spoilers
Richie and Eddie have decided to join a video dating agency to find their perfect female companion. Eddie is less than imaginative when it comes to filling in his form and so lands himself a date with Sarah Ferguson, much to his disgust. ''I'm a respectable man!'' he barks at the agency woman.

Richie, however, has bent the truth somewhat with his application by claiming to be an eccentric, wealthy aristocrat and so secures a date with a Russian countess named Natasha. He donates one of his kidneys to get enough money to buy dinner. He also gets Eddie to pose as a butler named Jives.

Upon meeting her when he invites her for dinner at the flat, Richie is smitten by her immediately. Natasha in turn seems to have feelings for Richie but are they genuine?

The second series of 'Bottom' kick started with this little topper which is generally considered with justification as one of the very best episodes of all time. However it does have one slight flaw. The scene in which Richie is about to get his end away, only to have his success scuppered when he has a heart attack is amusing but also somewhat uneasy to watch now as this was what claimed Rik's life in 2014. The Sarah Ferguson gag was a dig at her marital break-up to Prince Andrew following tabloid scandal.

Lisa Maxwell, who plays the agency woman, was a regular on 'The Russ Abbot Show' in the '80's while the gorgeous Helen Lederer, who played Natasha, is best remembered for her appearances on BBC Scotland's 'Naked Video'.

Funniest bit - Richie and Natasha sitting down at the table as Eddie serves up dinner, however Richie starts to squirm in discomfort, leading to this gag.

EDDIE: ( proffering ) Squashed potatoes?

RICHIE: Very possibly, Eddie, I think I just sat down too fast!

Perfect!
alexstinks6 November 2012
I remember watching this as a child in the 90s (no idea how my parents let me watch it that young) but it was worth it. I'm still obsessed with it now. This show makes me laugh so much. The jokes, the slapstick violence, the unconditional love between Richie and Eddie...It is perfect in my opinion. I'll never get bored of it. I have the collection on DVD these days and watch ti regularly. I can't fault this show. I've never seen their other work (The Young Ones) as I wasn't around when it was on telly so I can't compare it to the other show. A lot of people say the Young ones was better but for me since i'm more familiar with Bottom and seen all the episodes - Bottom is best. I don't think it's possible to beat Bottom. The humour is spot on for me...the best of British! I love it!
