Death Ray - Why Didn't You Just Say Death Ray
GunnersMate14 May 2018
Dr. Nobel is a fabulous episode of Eureka which stands the test of time (over 10 years later as this is written). A tale of Cold War weaponry and love which really works. The immediate crisis of a death ray (as it is understood to be by the scientific-term-challenged Sheriff) is played out on the backdrop of the comedy of Fargo's aptitude to break things, the silly competitive-machismo of Carter and Stark butting heads, Zoe paying penance for being Zoe, and a long gone love affair. This episode is full of laughs, still politically relevant, a well-paced and well-told tale, and emotionally beautiful. The best of the series so far.

Fargo activates a doomsday machine
Tweekums21 November 2018
As this episode opens Fargo is shown to his new office... which turns out to be four levels down and appears to have been untouched in decades. As he and a couple of others clear the accumulated junk they discover an old work station and a pair of keys that look as if they could be used to turn it on. As they turn the keys a message states that the weapon system will deploy in twenty four hours! There doesn't appear to be any way of deactivating it. The only hope is finding the machines inventor; unfortunately he hasn't been entirely in control of his faculties since being overlooked for the Nobel Prize.

This episode was a lot of fun. It started well with Fargo keen to get to his new office before finding it is such a dump then the naivety as he and his friend activate the device... I doubt anybody watching didn't think it would be a weapon system but the genius as Global Dynamics, makers of cutting edge weapons, doesn't consider it! Further entertainment is provided by the sheriff being the only person to use the term 'death-ray' while the scientists hide behind technological terms. As well as humour and a degree of tension there are some touching moments involving the aged scientist and the woman he loved. Overall another quality episode.

A big movie inside a little episode

This is easily one of the most memorable episodes in Eureka. The story buildup, the romance, how it all came together and ended up was perfect.

I've said before that I've seen the best episode of a show.....

But here I stand corrected! This is by far the best episode of any tv show I've seen. It's heart warming, funny and filled with science....oh yeah, and a death ray! I loved everything about it!

Another episode that falls apart at the end
skribs7 January 2023
I'm starting to think that the writers of Eureka were under a time crunch and never had time to finish an episode, so they just threw something on the page last-minute to wrap everything up. This episode is a prime example.

There is a lot of good in this episode. A lot of good. This is one of the few episodes with actually entertaining banter between Carter and Stark, as most of their banter is just "I hate him." The old folks getting involved because of some booby traps they set 50 years ago makes for a fun episode. The show leans heavily onto the 60s theme, with callbacks to the nuclear arms race AND the moon landing.

However, when you watch the finale, remember two things: 1) There were silos all over town.

2) Not even a nuclear bomb hitting the town could have stopped this weapon from hitting its targets and starting a chain reaction that could destroy the world.

Keep those in mind, and you'll see what I mean about the writers writing themselves into a corner and just phoning it in for the solution.
