Wow. They went there.
pansavant6 August 2022
Reviews saying this episode had nothing to do with the show have never read the original comics series. This was one of the most disturbing, brutal, and horrifyingly intense chapters in the Sandman comics saga; this episode captured the absolute disturbing horror of a deranged individual's nightmare of a "better world" being brought to life.

Great episode - seems like some people have no patience
JamesR197312 August 2022
From reading some of the comments here, I get a feeling some people have never read the source material.

A lot of the stories in The Sandman have short arcs - almost anthology like - so to blame Netflix for stand alone episodes is ignorant of how it actually unfolds.

I thought this was a great episode. It was slow, but it needed to be to build up the tension and see the change in the characters. David Thewliss was immense and once again showed what a versatile actor he can be.

So far I think the production has been excellent - you can see the effort that has been put into this in terms of actors, story and visual effects - all of which are a cut above the average.

Cynicism V Optimism.
W011y4m55 August 2022
What's particularly remarkable about this episode is it inventively establishes a set of potentially mundane circumstances & then carefully paces the gradual deterioration of these aforementioned circumstances in order to simply express (& thus, explore) the difference in the antagonist & protagonist's ideological perspectives in a visual manner, on screen - quite literally characterised by the way in which interpersonal relationships & dynamics between this ensemble shift as the viewpoints are altered; simultaneously capturing the fragility of peace / stability & questioning what it takes to maintain it.

Hence, this is a fiercely intelligent, mind bending, topical installment where the subjective interpretations of the same reality are laid bare for all to witness until these two individualistic characters are forced in to naturally occurring conflict, purely over a disagreement which neither is able to accept. The philosophical complexity hidden beneath the facade of simplicity is honestly staggering & this operates on a level higher than most would care to appreciate.

What if you couldn't lie?
crazelord8 August 2022
I can't praise this episode enough. It's like this brilliant short psychological horror film. I was surprised how deftly and quickly every new character and plot line was set up, and how invested I got with brand new characters, and all the acting was terrific.

And the number of times I was shocked by some unexpected twist was terrific. It's far from predictable (even if you read the comic as things are added and changed) and the building suspense into the climax is perfectly paced. It's all so unsettling but captivating.

And it really goes to show how dangerous John's world would be if he made it this way. John would say he's making a better world by not allowing people to lie but what he's really doing is forcing people to blurt out the truth and their base desires. Honesty may be the best policy but in reality it's more nuanced than that.

Sometimes having a filter is just how we need to interact. Maybe what you think doesn't need to be said, maybe you are in the heat of the moment and you need to calm down before you speak, maybe the timing is wrong for unsettling news, maybe you base desires shouldn't be acted upon so cavelier, maybe you feel like you want something in the moment but you really don't in the long run. Sometimes we even need to lie to ourselves for our own benefit.

So many situations requiring different approaches. In many ways it's pondering how our fear of our real selves being exposed will lead us to making bad choices and deception. As pretending everything is fine to maintain status quo while we do other things in secret feels safer than being upfront. But it's not all cut and dry.

Bc whether or not the truth was better in some in some these stories, what the themes seem to be saying is that not being in control of that choice will lead to chaos and pain. Or worse can bring out the darkest parts of what we're capable of reducing all actions to base impulsivity and emotion.

If all the cards are suddenly on the table everyone loses the hand. Lies, filters, and putting on a facade are part of the fabric of society for better or worse. True unabashed honesty and instinctual reactions to things is dangerous.

And this is told and directed in an amazingly compelling way with different stories unfolding simultaneously and connecting with each other, all within a single set.

---

Though this is probably an unpopular opinion but I personally think it's a lot better than the original comic story.

Going back to the comic after this episode feels more like reading some old school "house of secrets" horror comic story vs the study on human interaction the episode is.

More Dr Destiny just messing with people who are kind of unlikable from the get go. He genuinely looks like a monster and it doesn't take much power to push everyone over the edge.

He's a unabashedly evil presence influencing the worst parts of bad people and derives joy from their suffering. It's much more of its time than it seems in memory (much more of a "we live in a society" story), esp with it being less shocking compared to media these days than it was then.

Still a great piece of fiction but I think the episode takes the foundation and goes a lot deeper with it and not needing a narrator to spell things out for you and instead letting the story unfold through interactions (tbf the comic had to fit in one issue vs an almost hour long episode). But I prefer the more fleshed out episode.

There's a lot more added character and emotion to this story. For John and the rest of the cast. His motivations are much more built on personal childhood trauma and the people in the diner are more complex and relatable. And the show takes the time to build into something not just creepy and scary but profound as well.

Episode 5 : 24/7
recruitshanks5 August 2022
Such a hard hitting episode, it clearly shows how much the society will be affected by the antagonist's ideology, the episode sets up itself slow but when the actual plot starts it turns very dark and shows the reality of the society but at the third act of the episode a clear solution is given which is very satisfying, the tone of this episode, music, cinematography, lighting, teleplay and especially acting of every single actor was on point and praiseworthy. David thewlis deserves some kind of award for his acting. Overall an awesome episode with a hard-hitting message and a perfect cliffhanger, Neil gaiman op🔥 Kudos!

A slow building masterpiece
grantdoran7 August 2022
At the start of this episode, I thought it was an unwanted distraction from the series.

But as it slowly builds, it becomes a masterpiece and a thorough examination of the human condition.

In my view, the best episode of the series up to this point.

It's actually tame.
twilightshadows-428-4003037 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In reviews of this episode more than any other you can immediately tell who's read the comics and who hasn't. So far, they are basically following the original. The Sandman is a bit different than what viewers may be used to. It's an anthology series with different arcs that are all set in Morpheus' world, but which may or may not have any connection otherwise. Additionally, Morpheus is not always the central character. And for those complaining about the gruesomeness or depravity of this episode, it's actually been seriously watered down. The original was written in line with 80s horror, but even then it pushed the envelope. It's widely considered one of the most disturbing comics ever written. Unlike here, John is not remotely sympathetic; he's a sadistic psychopath who enjoys controlling and torturing people. At one point, when he briefly allows the others' minds to return, they ask him why he's doing this. His answer is because he can. The original plot plays out over 24 hours and descends further and further into madness. Just a few examples of what's left out - He causes a children's tv host to tell the children to slash their wrists and then proceeds to slash her own. He forces those in the diner to make confessions, which include Kate retelling a time when she engaged in necrophilia. He exploits their wildest dreams which include Gary having a hooker in his car and beating her and Kate holding Gary's severed head in her lap. When Marsh realizes Judy is a lesbian, he beats her saying she would turn heterosexual if she had a proper man to show her. John forces them to worship him and then, instead of the separate sexual encounters of this episode, he forces them into an orgy. It's revealed Marsh and Bette were having an affair which caused his wife to drink herself to death, but while driving nails into his hand he confesses that, while incarcerated, Bette's son sold himself to him for cigarettes. John gives them the minds of wolves and Gary tears out Mark's throat. Everyone dies bloody. The eye gouging scene is Judy, not Bette. Like I said, this version is tame. Both versions dive deep into the darker side of humanity, reminding us the greatest monsters are sometimes human, and the hero doesn't always arrive to save everyone. It's significant that when Morpheus arrives there's no one left to save. However, Gaiman's themes revolve around stories, what we control, and the idea reflected in that statement that all stories end in death. The show attempted to soften this scene by not only eliminating the more disturbing elements, but also in making John a tragic hero, at least in his mind, who's had a life full of lies and simply wants to free people to embrace truth. It's artfully executed by Thewlis who at first appears unassuming, fragile, and even vulnerable. This, coupled with his later apathy and complete lack of remorse as he sits and eats ice cream, makes him all the more chilling. Then there's a larger existential juxtaposition between John's view that dreams are lies and Morpheus' view of dreams as hope. The point is it wasn't the truth that destroyed these people; it was that it was revealed in a way that robbed them of their dreams. A battle plays out between them, in which the destruction of the ruby, one of Morpheus' tools actually increases his power. This echoes Lucifer's comment about over reliance on tools making one weak. It's an evolution of the character, as is his final act of mercy for John. Overall this is a brilliant episode, but like its source, the tone is much darker and more disturbing than anything else in the series, which some may find less palatable. It's a true walk on the dark side.

Uncomfortable Twin Peaks level weirdness
splosh36 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The majority of this episode is a strong change of pace from the previous. Showing what John's perfect world would be, where honesty is the best policy. The episode gradually progresses from the mundane of normalcy in a common diner, but slowly darkens as each character is forced to tell the whole truth and nothing but.

It's uncomfortable and harsh but engaging, and an interesting view into what this character believes would be a better world.

Warning: Spoilers
This was the best episode for me so far hands down. The whole diner scene was executed masterfully. I was at the edge of my seat. The ruby gets destroyed which was unexpected. I don't know how that happened. John was close to defeating Dream in his own kingdom and palace but when he is done speaking the ruby gets destroyed. I got a bit confused when that happened. But I guess it was because John was never supposed to get the ruby and use it as his own. Also dream said that when John's father lost the ruby it was cursed. So may be that's why. But apart from that the whole episode was a masterpiece. 9.8/10 That whole diner scene was just amazing to watch.

The most grotesque and disturbing TV episode I have watched in years
vudinh6 August 2022
Wow, what an episode. Starting out quite slow. Just a bit creepy and perhaps psychotic but then really exploded with insanity in the middle. I was gasping multiple times as there were some surprisingly twisted moments that I totally didn't see them coming. Of course, the ending was "dreamy" (pun intended).

Overall, the episode was truly grotesque and disturbing which is just wonderful. It's not easy to maintain the suspension that well through the whole 1-hour episode. Well-done.

Could have done without this one
gwrugger12 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I know it was mostly right from the comics, and it was wonderfully acted and filmed, but it also really dragged. And all that waiting for that bleak results in the diner. Yeah, wouldn't have minded if they had cut the diner scene.

Wow. David Thewlis is such a good actor. The story of 24/7 is one of the best I've ever read. They did it not as good as the comic, but nearly. It's great. It's dark. It's so well filmed. The music is also good. And the suspense is unbelievable. It's so intelligent. I loved it.

Amazing
egsayers-997377 August 2022
This episode is one of the most gory, but also one of the most thrilling, and incredibly intense throughout. The buildup is slow but great and suspenseful, and the third act was an absolute showstopper. The acting was amazing, great performances from everyone. Highly anticipated, and delivered well!

Similar to American Gods. Same insanity but slower paced.
tbkcpi7 August 2022
This has a similar vibe to American Gods but slower pacing. Some of the episodes are iterative with the others stand alone in depth. Episode 5 could have been a feature film. All are fairly well done. David Thewlis is pretty amazing. Boyd Holbrook reprises his Pierce role from Logan. The others are what you'd expect. I liked it.

Absolutely fantastic episode!
sebastianpdavies9 August 2022
Granted this episode was very much a filler episode however it was absolutely brilliant. Normally when a series has a filler episode it's absolutely dire with no reason or character development. This however was fantastic, one of the best hours of TV I've watched in a long time.

Could have been great with better actors.
namob-436735 August 2022
This diner and how it plays out was one of the most disturbing, disgusting and weird comics of all time. They did a pretty good attempt to replicate this and some of this is almost spot it. They sell the creepiness pretty good.

The problem here is that the actors are not good enough to sell it.

Another problem, which I do get, is that they do not portrait the gore and disgusting-ness good enough. Seemingly have no budget for it.

This was a step up though, and mainly because they are following the script from the comic.

Good, but not great. It could have been amazing with better actors.

Warning: Spoilers
Glued to the screen.

Humanity is so primal, it all comes down to the most basic of desires if all the standards, pressure and society's perfect little cover is blown away.

A bubble, a lie. People forcibly unhappy to just meet the expectations of others. Such a burden humanity bestows upon themselves.

Then a twist, it's not the lies, it's the hope, their dreams that are taken.

Even make believe.

The 1 star reviews are baffling...
yoshinaruto15 August 2022
The only criticism I'm seeing in these 1 star reviews is that it's either "boring" or "too gay". I could accept boring as a subjective criticism if they elaborated more, but most of them don't. There is the somewhat valid criticism that most of the episode is self contained, but I don't see how that's such a bad thing.

The concept is interesting, and it does a good job utilizing its one location. It builds tension well, with us not knowing where it's headed or whether or not the characters in this episode are safe or not. It doesn't need to rely on CGI or pre-established characters/plot lines. Personally, it's my favorite episode of the season, although episodes 4 and 6 are are right behind it.
