Disappointed

I'll continue to watch as I love the books & first season, but oh dear, what have they done? Is it a different screen writer or Director or what? Where's the gripping opening gone? Why music, and why is the dialogue so quiet? Really struggling to hear the voices sometimes. The story is disjointed, they've taken random bits from the book and gave no thought to the story. It's so slow, no action or suspense.

This long awaited start to the second season did not disappoint. In fact I ended up bingeing the whole season in one day!! I suppose it helps that I have not read the books, but i have to say that loving the first series, this one has blown my socks off!! Superb sets, great new characters and great attention to detail.

A Superb second season
dbaro-2842615 April 2021
The second season is rich in providing the reasons for the first season's penitent vampire Matthew, his murderous blood rage and his offices of master spy for both his father and Queen Elizabeth. The writing beautifully depicts the horror of Elizabethan England, and masterfully characterizes some of its main powerhouses, Elizabeth I, Sir Walter Raleigh and Kit Marlowe. If you're bored with this aspect of the books it's simply because you are not well read enough. It's all incredibly well written and I binged it heartily.

Nothing new in S02E01

Warning: Spoilers
The second season starts exactly where the first ended this is only a review of episode one. Overall this episode brings nothing to the show there were no major plot lines reveals. The acting was on a par with season one but unless the story picks up a pace it could fail before it begins. One main complaint and not just with this show why is it necessary for the background music to be so loud. There is a segment where the two lead characters are talking and you cannot hear a word they are saying.

Disappointed

Warning: Spoilers
The first season was fantastic. Despite not following the book very well they told a beautiful story and kept true to it's heart in the adaptation. Not the case with this second season at all. You can definitely feel the difference. The production, direction and adaptation were so far off it was incredibly difficult to get through especially episode 4 and episode 8. My favorite thing about Shadow of Night was how little time Deborah Harkness spent in the present and yet they decided to devote two whole episodes to the present day and a lot of time in the other episodes as well. Additionally, the way they ended the season was so painfully bad. The only positives I can say about this season was the casting of James Purefoy as Philippe and Steven Cree as Gallowglass. I was so excited for this season and if I had it to do over I wouldn't waste my time.

Yay its back!

A pretty good start to the new season. Some parts felt a little rushed but decent otherwise. But why does Matthew have to look like he's homeless?? It's gross.. His beard is scraggly in unkempt. Neck beard..i mean they did have the ability to shave and he was a noble, he would of been clean shaven or a shaped beard. How is this scruffy homeless look socially acceptable??

Gloomy
victortr9 January 2021
After the marvellous first season filled with open spaces and well-lighted scenes, this first episode of season 2 felt excessively gloomy, with most scenes taking place in dark. Besides, the dialogues were mostly pointless and somewhat childish. Could have been a great opening, but there are so many missed opportunities in terms of cinematography, plot, and story telling.

Different writers or directors??
khconsteng9 January 2021
I've read all the books. Several times. This second season does not seem to have the same writers or directors as the first season. The first season was phenomenal. It was was beautifully written and directed. Season 2, first episode, is lacking. In everything. It doesn't follow the book-probably because producers want to hasten the story. Bad idea. This episode seems disjointed. It doesn't have the mystery of the book or of the first season. I guess it's hard to follow perfection of the first season.

.. except for Matthew being a bad boy and Diana trying to manage him instead of focusing on herself.

Quite interesting

I loved that they traveled to the past. The costumes and sets/locations were so well done. The pace of the episode was a little slow but the story still interesting.
