The Devil Is In The Details
douglasmcbroom30 January 2022
I love the rich, stately way each episode unfolds. I love the character development. The brilliant writing from Taylor Sheridan. Even when it's an episode wherein there is not a lot of action, a lot happens.

Sam Elliott and Isabel May continue to be standouts. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill continue to surprise. And LaMonica Garrett and Gratiela Brancusi had a particularly good episode.

Another great episode.
ianpirie-8402630 January 2022
The writing, acting, scenery is phenomenal in this series. In this episode the opening interaction between Shea and Elsa was so moving. Had tears when Sam Elliotts character started welling up.

People who say it's slow, boring simply don't appreciate good writing and acting. Look forward to the rest of the series.

Just write down what ya take.
slak96u8 February 2022
I don't get the awful reviews on here, almost like the people that wrote them have an agenda. The show is what it is, it's a dark Western drama, written by Taylor Sheridan. You know what you're going to get, he has enough work out there to understand what 1883 is going to be. The show isn't going to be some woke liberal western fantasy, that's not what Sheridan does. If you're expecting something else, change the channel, move along... The monologs seem to be very devisive on here, again, if Elsas monologs are so off putting, shut it off. I don't understand why people watch something they dislike so intensely, week after week.

Character building, plot development episode, a bit slow, not bad by any means, just not as excellent as the previous. Picked up a couple new characters and a great guest spot by Rita Wilson, her and Faith Hill have definitely done that in real life. Isabel May is still excellent, although her accent still needs work, it can be distracting at times.

Absolutely riveting and rich
blandfamily130 January 2022
Brilliant episode. Script is fantastic. Music adds so much. Every character did an outstanding job. Who knew Faith and Tim had this kind of acting ability?? This episode in particular took the richness and depth of it to another level. I actually think I like it better than Yellowstone now. Yep, there, I said it.

Emotional words of grief
eric-shoe3 February 2022
The opening dialog of this episode will move anyone who has experienced a sudden death of a loved one. Unbelievable writing. Disregard the negative reviews - I feel this is the best episode to date.

Best lines I have seen
lluca-4774814 June 2022
Dialogue Shea-Elsa has the best and most emotional lines I ever seen on screen. Everything is good and grand in this show: scenery, cinematography, script, acting, story.

Quickly becoming one of the best westerns EVER.
rwgilmore241 February 2022
I think the depictions of custom, interaction, courtesy's and emotion displayed are VERY accurate for the period. The locations, props, settings items used are authentic. This episode dealt with the emotions of the characters and the small kindness exhibited (so lacking in today's society) were truly moving.

For a cold-hearted, grizzled, old cowboy.....
hpringnitz11 March 2022
....like me to be sitting here bawling like a baby over a TV show is a sure fire sign that that TV show is one of the best ever made. That scene with Ilsa and Shea at Ennis' grave was heartbreaking. And a testament to the acting chops of that old man and that young lady. She is very talented and about as beautiful as they get. Quite a future ahead of her!

I don't give out many 10 ratings, but this episode deserves it.

You people with the bad reviews man...

Warning: Spoilers
I called Thomas and the gypsy woman the first time they had dialogue together. I'm more interested in the depiction of the journey through history than evidently some of these other folks are on here at... whatever they're into. This show is painting a great picture of life under these circumstances and I kindly doubt negative commenters could do better.

I see Thomas and this new family riding off into the sunset. I see Elsa leaving the family proper to broaden horizons. I see the migrants becoming good preppers. I see why Duttons give no f#cks.

It's another great episode of a great show. Not sure why anyone can see it as anything other than that.

3 episodes now
spamwilly30 January 2022
Turning into a soap opera, the plot has slowed down to 50 head of cattle and dozen wagons crossing the same river (shooting spot not story) - time to pick up the pace.

Solid episode
sjbushby-6068031 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First three episodes of this show were awesome, episodes 4 and 5 in my opinion were way too focussed on Elsa which I don't mind too much I just hope we get to see a lot more of the other characters from now on otherwise it would be a bit of a waste. Overall a good episode in general, every show has its slower paced episodes or the storyline wouldn't work out as well and when action happens and tragedy occurs later on in the storyline it would not hit half as hard as it is the slower episodes that build up the viewers connection with the characters. The group are also about to cross into Indian territory so obviously stuff is gonna pick up pretty quickly soon. I would love to see more scenes of James, Shea and Thomas together, as they are a really good trio and all kinda bounce off of each other as they have similar pasts. Overall this show was a pleasant surprise and I am really enjoying it, just wish they didn't stick 90% of the focus on Elsa for two episodes as it's kind of made me dislike her more because it feels like she is the only character to have suddenly developed rather than doing it over time. For example I think they could have stretched out the relationship between her and Ennis for longer, as it would only make his death sadder anyway, and also give other characters some screen time in those episodes that in my opinion she dominates a little too much.

Soap Opera Drama Needs Balance
andrewjott2 February 2022
Both 1883 and Yellowstone are Western Soap Operas and I love the melodrama in balance with the stoic gazing onto western landscapes and especially the cowboy action. This episode just didn't have anything other than soapy drama and it got boring by the end. Also what's the deal with the Noemi's accent? Did all the immigrants learn perfect English since episode 1? Seems like a plot hole.

Amazing episode
frodaddy-112 May 2022
Amazing episode, so much depth and emotion. The acting by Sam Elliot and Isabel May was Emmy level. I actually thought this episode was as good as the last one but in its own way, and I also think 1883 is better than Yellowstone as a series. Can't wait for more.

1883 continues to impress!
ajmillar2 February 2022
Another excellent episode... love the scenes between Shea and Elsa. So wonderful to have an actual authentic Western series back on television!. I also very much love the narration from Elsa in the series as well as the music-beautiful score!. The whole series has a Terrence Malick feel to it which I love!.

A pause, to reflect and refresh
lor_22 July 2023
The wagon train has halted a while, and Elsa is consumed by grief with the death of her lover. Discovering that she's not pregnant just makes her sadder. Sam tries to cheer her up with his homespun philosophy, which has more effect on the viewer than Elsa.

Slow-paced episode, that dares to have the word "boring" in its title, A wiseguy cowboy tries to make a move on Elsa without much luck. Her daddy tells her a Civil War story he lived through, hoping to get her snap out of her funk but only time will tell.

On a brighter note, a romance breaks out for Thomas and Noemi, from two different worlds. The series pauses for reflection, not the sort of content to grab viewers, but satisfying in a slow-burning way.

Beyond expectations
aloch-3032013 February 2022
So there is not a shoot-out in every episode. If you thought there would be, then you probably will be disappointed. Maybe the mind-numbing idiocy of a superhero movie would be more for you. But this show actually has some very good, intelligent writing and acting in it. Wouldnt be surprised if there wasn't a few emmy winning performances and they would be well deserved. This is based more on reality than fantasy which obviously some people are just not able to comprehend. I am glad there is finally something worth watching for the rest of us.

Warning: Spoilers
Not a bad episode. Definitely not as good as last week's. Also being that this is the Yellowstone universe why cast a character from modern day Yellowstone? (Agent Hennon). Makes no sense.

Boring The Viewer
85122229 June 2022
Greetings from Lithuania.

I like the story, concept, acting, cinematography and landscape of1883. But this episode was pretty boring. Yet not bad at all. The way it looks and feels is amazing, including this episode. But to much monologues in this episode.

Overall, this episode was great in regards of craftsmanship, but boring in writing department. Will definitely going to see remaining ones.

What is this ambiguity?
hkenaroglu30 January 2022
It's episode 5 and still it's not clear why they're going to Oregon, what makes it too attractive to suffer this deathful journey? As i just see that Oregon is a little more free and that's it. I think the writer gives us a home duty to study that times of US.

Four minutes into this one and the emotional ramblings of the young girl are wearing thin. It's getting annoying and adds absolutely nothing to the story.

Episode 6
bobcobb30117 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
To set up a bad pun, this episode is title "Boring the Devil" but apparently it was also boring the viewers.

This episode felt absolutely necessary given the events of the last one and we needed Elsa to go through this physical and mental challenge for her character to progress, but it just never leads to the most compelling hour of television when they have this kind of thing happen.

This show is still easy viewing though and in a lot of ways is actually better than its parent television series Yellowstone, but this is an episode that while some scenes were engaging, they may want to go back to the cutting room board and fix.

Bore the Devil?
bkhazelett9 March 2022
They sure got the name right of this episode. I felt like I was watching someone read they're diary with pictures. The actress paying the daughter didn't fair well as a hard cowgirl, she was more like a kitty cat pretending to be a lion. I didn't buy her a dry, grief at all. She is a awesome actress, but this episode did not do her any favors.

What exactly was Sam Elliot hired to do in this teen soap?
Ziro101 March 2023
Only 4 episodes left and they are only now leaving Texas.

6 episodes about a teenage girl which adds nothing to the story of the Dutton's or the story of the unknown west.

Female characters behave as if it is not 1883 but 2023. Mrs. Dutton gets drunk and berates her husband for not forgiving him. Hello, you indirectly tolerated your daughter into romance with a cowboy and watched her "becoming woman".

For 6 episodes now, I've missed the important issue of racism, especially towards Thomas as an African American and former slave who had implied he was whipped. No one looks at him suspiciously or calls him names, which is very very unusual for that era. Even in the 1950s, he would have had problems.

Sheridan had a unique opportunity to show themes of racism, Native Americans, challenging Sam Elliot's acting performance, showing states other than Texas in their pristine state, and many other themes.

The white Europeans who discovered, colonized and settled USA were greedy racist mass murderers towards African Americans and Native Americans. From the sailors, to the Mayflower, to the pioneers, to Ellis Island. All of them. Not a trace of it here.

Instead, we get a teen soap opera and a man (James Dutton0) who acts like a wimpy 21st century father and husband.

Boring is this episode.
harknessk31 January 2022
At this rate it'll be 1983 by the time they leave Texas and go anywhere. Boring and too slow. No longer interesting. Scenes are painful at times and need to move on.
