Best Episode Of Season 3
gtenenbaum-260386 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was a great episode. For starters, Ken has lost and he knows it. At the end of the episode he looks suicidal. The meeting with Ken and Logan was tense, and Logan was as cold and hurtful as he has ever been.

Next we have the meeting between Shiv and her mother. This is every bit as uncomfortable as the meeting between Logan and Ken. Shiv leaves the meeting with a new determination to do whatever it takes to get what she wants. Shiv then tells Tom that she wants to have a baby. She also tells him that she does not love him. Tom is whipsawed, and he has no idea of what to make of any of it.

Then we have Roman sending his father an inappropriate picture that was meant for Gerri. This leads Shiv to pounce. She tells Logan that Roman is a liability who is disgusting. She then tries to convince Gerri to file a sexual harassment complaint against Roman. Meanwhile, Logan is furious with Roman.

This is a transformative episode for Shiv. At the start of the episode she is not even willing to attend a board meeting. By the end of the episode she has decided to fight for what she wants, and she is willing to do anything to get that.

Good stuff. I look forward to the season finale next week.

"You've turned Black Bile into Silver Dollars"
lesedicarlinphaahla6 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Man was this episode was a return to form for Succession. This is not to say I have not enjoyed this season, because I absolutely have. Succession is still better than anything else on TV right now, but like I noted in my review of last week's episode - season three has had a very different feel to it.

However, these last two episodes are getting back to what we've known Succession to be - a story about manipulation. There's a ton of it going on here. Roman trying to manipulate Lady Caroline, Lady Caroline manipulating Shiv in such a way that she feels she could be a good mother, Shiv manipulating Tom and Logan manipulating pretty much everyone. I wished there was a little more Greg and Comfry but this episode is glorious regardless.

The scene with Logan and Kendall is one of my absolute favorites in the entire series. It's up there with the press conference in "This Is Not For Tears" and the dining room scene with the Pierce's in "Tern Haven." Just spectacular writing and acting. The discussion about the core themes of the show, " you've monetized all the American resentments of class and race" was just so riveting. I wouldn't be surprised if Jeremy Strong scoops up another Emmy for his work here. But truly speaking, everyone is on top form. I felt like last week Kieran Culkin shined quite a bit, and he's still doing incredible work here. Brian Cox is stellar, Sarah Snook is great, Alan Ruck is hilarious with his proposal and oh, Matthew Macfadyen. Just great.

Things aren't looking up for Tom and Shiv's marriage. The bedroom scene and the subsequent conversation they had about the freezing of embryos just sounds like they are inches away from divorce or at the least, a separation. Roman royally messes up and I don't know where that leaves him in Logan's eyes. Shiv is a shark and she smells blood in the water, and this is evident when she pretty much blackmails Gerri at the end. I initially thought she'd end up on Kendall's side but she might just prove to be Logan's best choice of a successor.

Kendall is just defeated, truly tragic. While Logan shows himself to truly be the devil. The scene that I gushed about earlier kind of reminded me of "Cold Cuts" from The Sopranos, where Janice tries to be a better person but Tony reminds her of the mistakes she's made and how she'll never be able to redeem herself from them. Logan does something similar here by reminding Kendall of the car accident from season one and how he's always cleaning up Kendall's messes. Heartbreaking. Imagine your own father doing you like that. Definitely my favorite episode of the season along with "The Disruption" and "Too Much Birthday"

Beautiful, just beautiful.

Master puppeteer
mertafor6 December 2021
It took a while for me to understand who deserves what exactly but last episode made everything more clear and this one made it crystal.

Since the beginning I've been trying to root for Ken because he's been introduced as the successor at first. Things were going back and forth between siblings, and I was still looking for a winner. Last episode made me think that it can be even Roman after he was pushed forward.

In the end, I came to a realization that this show is all about Logan. He's only using his kids powers and weaknesses for his own agenda and he's a master manipulator in that. In fact none of the siblings have the qualifications to be CEO yet he knows that they are his successors and he has to play the game, use them in the best way they serve him. In his mind, bunch of freeloaders who are not only satisfied by the wealth but also looking to take his throne.

However, Logan has a simple weakness. He doesn't want to win by referee decision, he wants a knockout, crushing his opponents. Therefore he plays too much with his hunt. This might cause unexpected turns if siblings realize the actual agenda behind it all.

Obviously balance between the siblings will constantly change as long as everything serves Logan's interests. Finally realizing it made the things more enjoyable for me. Looking forward to last two episodes and possibly the next season.

A Masterpiece that chokes your soul
suprabh6 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I won't go into a lot of words. This episode explored the absolute realness and darkness of every character in this show (except Ken who is definitely the Odd one out for being more or less a genuinely good person). Yes this episode's ending is by far the most horrifying and painful moment of the show so far- but what was most disturbing for me was- the words Shiv used in the supposedly intimate conversation with Tom. When she said "I don't love you..but you still want me"- was a true heartbreaking moment and Matthew Macfadyen's brilliant expressions did great justice to that scene. I truly feel he is one of the best in this show especially on how complex his character is.

This line sums up the series -
jjl-230328 December 2021
Caroline to Shiv - "Your father never saw anything he loved that he didn't wanna kick it just to see if it would still come back." This sums up the ENTIRE series. Logan is evil. The acting is beyond what we've seen on TV. This season is fkin great. Kendall is heartbreaking.

I am actually tramatized by this episode
logbinder6 December 2021
Okay I know this fictional drama, but... The things the characters said to each other even at their most intimate left me actually traumatized. As much as I don't like them I feel sorry for each of them.

I'm better than you
jwatters76 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Kendall has finally come to the conclusion there's no way out for him in this. You can't help but sympathize with his character despite his repeated self sabotage. Even though he has a distorted view of reality, you can tell he really tries to have a futuristic view of the company instead of simply trying to please daddy like the other kids.

This season was not what I was expecting and I'm really happy about that. Tom has shown so much growth as a character and I'm excited to see what his next chapter will be.

One episode left and Jesse loves to end on a bang. I'm really looking forward to where they will go with this, and how big of a cliffhanger we'll have to sit on until season 4 comes out.

What just happened!!!
ajiteshmishra-131746 December 2021
This episode was a masterpiece. I could hardly watch it to the end because it was so heartbreaking and so many plots finally meeting a point in this episode. There were literally so many things going on here that I was glued to the screen throughout the episode. Best episode of this season without a doubt. Can't wait for the finale!

Brilliant work

If I put aside all usual inconsistencies and continuity goofs between episodes, and, I consider this episode as stand alone piece; I would name it one of the greatest episodes ever in showbiz.

Exceptional writing as always
UniqueParticle6 December 2021
I was surprised to see the 9.7 rating it is pretty well deserving! Chiantishire is a very formal, beautiful, artsy and exciting episode. A little dark I see why someone said it traumatized them because of inmate moments having a bit bold that flow pretty much. I must say this is one of the most brilliant episodes of the series!

Warning: Spoilers
Just a perfect episode really.

That dinner scene between Logan and Kendall is like one of the best of the whole show, written, acted and directed to perfection.

Every character in this episode pretty much gets their moment of realization, this show is so genius i love it.

I can't wait for the finale, it's going to be epic.

The writing is simultaneously great and awful
clawingthepsychosphere7 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Great, because most scenes either manage to carry enough emotional resonance to pull off what they want or because they're hilarious.

But big picture, the show has absolutely fallen apart. When it comes to some characters like Shiv and Logan, I feel I'm dealing with caricatures rather than the people I knew from S1.

Logan honestly barely feels like a character at all, probably because he's on the screen way less and the few times he is on screen it's to be intimidating or incredibly mean. That's not to say he wasn't both of those things before, but he played those moments differently and there seemed to be some empathy there (just small scenes like Marcia handing him his cane before Kendall tried to take the whole company were humanizing in ways that the whole health arc this season is just not.)

As for Shiv, oh god, what is even this character now? In S1 we had Shiv trying to choose between her political leanings and her family. The bad side won out. But in S2 when she ultimately had to choose between the family and Tom, she sided with Tom and it seemed like his pain got through to her. The character we have now has nothing going for her. There's really BARELY a character to speak of, she's just a snarky rich girl that always tries to get on top and fails. That's it. The scene with the mother this episode was nice, sure, but that scene would have been just as good even in a vacuum. Sarah Snook is an excellent actress and she is by no means the problem here, it's 100% the script.

All in all, while this season has some cool moments like the ones we got this episode, it's overall disappointing.

It's not like I'm going to stop watching, but I definitely won't ever have the excitement for S4 that I had going into S3.

Hop on the Bumbling Idiot Express
jstineback9 December 2021
Literally traveling downhill without any brakes, this season has been nothing short of disappointing. Zero character development, spinning its wheels with inane subplots, and idiotic characters who can't seem to get out of their own way. It's as if lead poisoning just decided to kick in throughout the entire Roy family. This isn't how dynasties were built and in fact not how the show started. Each episode has proved them stupider and stupider, devolving into a glammed up soap opera only to be saved by some "shocking" twist season ending I'm sure. Let's hope they all die in a freak manhole cover explosion accident and put us all out of our misery. Derp.

Roman just dug his own grave with one of the most unforgettable television scenes
aaverbeck6 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Just when I thought this show couldn't surprise me anymore, Jesse Armstrong and his incredible writing team, along with director Mark Mylod for this episode, give us this incredible hour of television. The tension throughout this whole episode is very strong, none of it good tension. For example, the conversation between Shiv and her Mother, the conversation between Shiv and Tom after their interesting sexual experience the night before, and of course the two stand out scenes from this episode.

The dinner scene between Kendall and Logan is an absolute perfect example of the master of subtlety. Brian Cox absolutely kills it with the delivery of his hateful, cruel, and manipulative lines. Jeremy Strong as always kills it by making Kendall look as if his heart is genuinely being stomped on, because to him it is.

Then of course, the moment that everyone is going to be talking about: The Dick Pic. It's been awhile since any type of media has made me audibly gasp and slap my hand to my mouth, but here we are. I was not at all expecting that to happen and it made me cringe so goddamn hard but man is it genius television. It sets up so many possibilities. Is Roman going to get shunned now and will Shiv take his place as Daddy's favorite? Will he fire Gerri like he implied and will Gerri join Kendall and go after ATN? Will nothing change?

Very excited to find out next Sunday, but very sad that it will be the end of one of my favorite seasons of television I have ever seen.

Chiantishire
lassegalsgaard28 December 2021
There are a select few TV shows that have managed to really get my gears turning. I've loved many shows, but it's not a lot that I've been obsessed with. Some of those shows I've seen through many times and will always find an excuse to go back and watch them again. And having now almost sat through three seasons of "Succession" and seen certain episodes multiple times, I'm finally ready to proclaim this as one of those shows that I can't get enough of. The talent involved in all departments exceeds that of many other TV shows, not just today, but of all time. Jesse Armstrong has led this show with such precision and focus on what's actually important to tell, plus a deep interest in characters that are so unlikable that you usually wouldn't even care what happened to them, but because of the drama unfolding in every episode, you have to. It's such an investing show and it rewards you for that investment, and it certainly has done so in season three. "Chiantishire," the penultimate episode of the third season, sees the Roy family going to Italy to attend the wedding of the children's mother, bringing all of their work with them. This show keeps upping itself and right before the finale, it has offered another great episode that will be remembered for its incredible dedication to upping the emotional stakes of the show right before the finale, setting the stage for a dangerous chess game that will change everything going forward.

After the cracks began to show a few episodes ago, the writers have kept audiences on their toes as to what would finally make the wall fall apart. Last week, I felt like we got the incident that would bring us towards the finale, and in this episode, Armstrong fueled the fire by putting all the characters at odd with each other, keeping them and the audience constantly guessing who is and who is not in Logan's warmth anymore. Armstrong truly upped the tension, and it will all come to a hopefully satisfying conclusion with the finale coming up next.

The characters all felt like they were in a familiar situation. Being put in the middle of a social gathering makes for a lot of nice comedic moments, but also for meetups of characters that we've wanted to see share the screen again. They put certain characters in moments that were heartbreaking, but also filled with the kind of standoffish nature that we've always loved about this show. A specific scene between Kendall and Logan finally coming head-to-head again was a highlight of the episode and was a strong showcase of why these two actors have been the perfect foils.

This was Mark Mylod's 11th directorial credit on this show, and even though he's almost done a dozen episodes, he still manages to impress. He lets the camera linger on the characters just a little longer than other directors; he gives them all their time to shine but isn't afraid of focusing more on the reactions around him; and he crafts beautiful imagery that stays in your head long after the episode is done. He has solidified himself as this show's prime director, and I'm so happy that they chose him to perfect what Adam McKay did with the premiere.

There's always something to talk about in terms of the performances, and this week there were a whole bunch of great displays of acting. Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox steal every scene that they're in, obviously, but I also felt like Kieran Culkin really got time to shine here. Not only is his comedic timing virtually perfect, but he has a flair for the drama of the show that we seldom give him credit for. He's acting with giants in this show, but he still manages to break from the fold and put himself in a power position every time.

"Chiantishire" is another masterful episode of this show, and it proves that the emotional stakes of this show are some of the strongest on TV. Upping the ante every time is not something any show is able to achieve, but Jesse Armstrong and the talented crew manages to show why they're the best at work.

Powerfull dialogue!
and_mikkelsen19 March 2023
This episode was fantastic! Despite being the second to last episode, it had a sense og finallity over it at times! As thf familly Gothersgade for their moms wedding in Toscana we get some great interactions and scenes i wont forget!

The dinner scene with Kendall and Logan was very well written! It really manages to give you a good idea what kind of people they are! I was genuelly shocked at times! What can you say that will hurt the most? Psychotic behavior is on full display at times!

This episode shows how great the writing is and how this show does drama and tension so well! Alaways exciting to see characters interact on screen!

Very excited to see how this ends cause anything can happen as always.

Scene for Scene, Nearly Flawless.
jamericanbeauty11 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The Season finale has alot to live up to! Scene after scene, this penultimate episode was the finest hour this season and one of the best of the series. It's a psychological drama and family trauma and intellectual war games. The writing, acting, pace, tone, humor are all on point. Logan and his biggest antagonist - Kendall's scene required multiple viewings for me. Bravo Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong! Their Father/Son dynamic remains the best of the show. Kendall thinks he's morally superior to his Father but he got a damn reality check! One cannot pull a Ted Kennedy Chappaquiddick and resume life as normal five minutes after and claim to be a good man! You're not! Somehow, I still feel bad for Kendall. Jeremy Strong plays him sympathetically. Loved the scene between Shiv and her Mum. It revealed Shiv is who I thought she was - a manipulative sociopath. Her doublespeak with her Husband Tom alone should tell you that. Speaking of Shiv, that blue dress and her hourglass body, to put it mildly, is something to behold. Body ooody ooody ooody! All that said, she and her Husband Mr. Shiv Roy should not be mocking Gregg and his lovelife or lack thereof. Their marriage is a sham! Rome's scene with Alexander Skarsgard was great. Is Skarsgard supposed to be Elon Musk by strategically speaking to get around SEC terms and regulations? The hilarity in the Geri/Logan/text gone bad scene is self-explanatory!

My prediction
kmfig7 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Great episode. What a lead up to the finale. So let's start with Roman. He totally screwed up the merger. Because he is Roman. Dad thought he could handle it -alas NO! And now the text which puts a nail in his coffin and in Jeri's. Then there is Shiv. She only cares about herself. Her move is to torpedo Roman. No concern for the company. Daddy is going to realize that the only one who really cares, had the brains and a few balls (stands up to the old man) is Kendall. Kendall is the only one who can save the company. He may be down, but he is not out.

Getting stale but two great strengths
whitnall7 December 2021
The story line is getting repetitive, and all the characters are still rather unlikable, but the show has two things going for it: the constant snide, disgusting, clever metaphors (especially from Roman), and the brilliant variations on the musical theme.

Very nearly TV perfection
admin-306299 December 2021
Succession S3 has been a bit patchy in places but Chiantishire is probably as near perfection as a TV episode gets. The writing, music, characters... Dysfunctional, almost Shakespearean perfection! 10/10.

Brilliant and nothing else!
BonsoirFriend6 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Kendal's character development is NOT ruined!

From the beginning of this season we all knew there is something wrong with him and his weird acting was a warning for what would come next.

That 'having a fun time' thing was a weak bone just ready to break.

The Great Logan Roy again!

In this Roman thing, Logan is the one who will take a good care of it and he won't let MoLester story happen again to his son.

Logan smashing the truth to Kendal's face was just relentless and with the tremendous acting, that just pure gold!

There is so much going on that makes it impossible to wait a week for the next episode.

So sad that we should wait at least a year for season 4 and should be kind of jealous of people who watching this masterpiece after ending in several years.

Pretty average episode
interestingstuff6 February 2023
Looks like this is another below average (and BORING) episodes where literally nothing happens except for characters doing small talk for 60 minutes, completely lacking in storyline development as well as character development but everyone is singing praises of it because these days HBO spends more money on marketing and hyping its products than actually producing them.

I'd bet that none of those 10/10 reviewers actually seen the episode and most of those reviews are actually paid for which HBO is known to do with its shows. These paid reviews even use the same keywords and same phrases to praise episodes like this because all these were written by the same person and spread to others to post on all online forums including here.

It's sad that people can't read honest reviews of shows anymore because of these paid shills.

Maybe I had high expectations but I expected the encounter to provide a bit more substance for the relationship going forward. Realizing there's one episode left in the season, I can't see what else could possible happen that we don't know.

I am very sad to see Kendalls character development ruined. We've come full circle and hit a wall.

Losing the logic
jaycharland7 December 2021
I found this episode disappointing. The characters are becoming caricatures of themselves (Shiv is just a manipulative extension of Logan, no other agenda or purpose). Storylines are dropping left and right (what happened to Shiv's open marriage? To Kendall's sobriety?). And what was cousin Greg, to say nothing of Gerri, doing at Logan's ex's wedding?

Pets in cages
hunterjm91826 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"He never saw anything he loved that he didn't want to kick, just to see if it would still come back." Logan treats those who trust him as pets in cages to be used at his convenience, and his power over others is so absolute that most of the other major characters (with the exception of Roman somehow) learned to treat people the same way out of survival. With the finale in hindsight it's clear this season is very much about that cycle of trauma and abuse. Reclaiming some control in your own life to these people means having power over others, and we see: Caroline make Shiv second guess herself into the biggest life decision you can make; Connor pressure Willa into giving up her life for him; Logan casually crush Kendall's spirit into dust; Shiv taunt Tom to his face about being trapped in a loveless marriage. All these people are trapped in Logan's web and have to choose between subservience or war, but Logan's the only one with an army.
