Leap of Faith
claudio_carvalho7 July 2014
Dexter has a problem with the woman that witnessed him killing Boyd Fowler and he does not know what to do since his code does not allow him to kill innocents. Debra calls him to the crime scene of a beheaded victim and Dexter takes the fingerprints of the woman and finds that she is Lumen Ann Pierce from Minnesota. The nanny Sonya leaves Dexter because she does not believe in his explanations for arriving late. Quinn follows the FBI agent Walker and finds the location of the safe house but he is arrested by the FBI agents and suspended by LaGuerta. Angel has problems with the Internal Affairs and apologizes with the wounded detective in the hospital. Lumen does not trust on Dexter and does not take medicines. Dexter discovers her luggage in a low budget hotel and brings it to Lumen. Dexter succeeds in convincing Sonya to give another chance to him. Debra leads a raid against the suspect Carlos Fuentes but he escapes. Lumen flees from Dexter and he shows Boyd's victim in the lake. Lumen tells that there were other men abusing of her.

"Beauty and the Beast" is a great episode and Julia Stiles is an excellent actress and now she is important character of this promising season. The subplots are very well developed and engaging. The final revelation of Lumen gives a hint that Dexter will certainly help the traumatized young woman to revenge the abuses she has suffered. My vote is nine.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Warning: Spoilers
Dexter never expected to be seen while killing Boyd Fowler. His witness is none other than Lumen Pierce, the battered woman that unknown to the forensic expert, sees him doing it. Dexter must subdue the young woman, whose identity is unknown to him, but he realizes she had been the object of abuse by people that are connected to Boyd.

Dexter is having problems with Sonya, who suddenly feels she has been asked too much responsibility in taking care of the baby. The other development in today's chapter is that Sgt. Batista is forced to apologize to his co-worker from the beating he gave him. Maria is adamant about it. At the same time, Batista fears I.A. will not be too kind on him when they review his case.

Deb, on the other hand, has been getting comfortable in her relationship with Quinn, something her brother never suspects. Quinn is getting near to finding a link between Kyle Butler and Dexter.

A good episode directed by Milan Cheylov. Jim Leonard wrote this installment in which Julia Stiles, a welcome sight on anything she decides to grace us with her presence, shines as Lumen. Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, Desmond Harrison, Lauren Velez, David Zayas and James Remar contribute to make this series one of the best on television.

Excellent! This season has the potential to become the best of them all.

Warning: Spoilers
Oh, it's so exciting to see where this season is heading ... :). I was skeptical after the first episode of this season, but now I think this season has the potential to become the best of them all. I don't know if this is the last season, if so, the writers are heading towards a blast finale. If there will be a succeeding season, this one will stage a perfect setup.

OK, many elements are taken from previous seasons: Deb is scared and disturbed, letting her judgment be clouded by her temper and impulse (seen before after the Lundy breakup / killing). Now Quinn is on Dexters heels (before it was Doakes). Batista has trouble with his women once again, the Dexter/Lumen alliance (before it was Dexter/Lila) etc.

What makes this episode (this season) work is the original mix of the new ideas with some of the old elements that worked well. The Deb/Quinn relationship is predestined to be fatal for both of them. Their emotional, personal and professional motives are so intertwined that the only result can be a total (lovely) mess. I see Quinn using Deb to come closer to Dexter, while Deb (who started the affair just as a soul-patch) falls in love wildly with him. Oh, and we know what happened to Doakes, so Quinn will have to be very careful ;). The Laguerta/Batista thing is also pretty messy (in a good way of course), they are both messing with their jobs and their emotions, it's possible one (or both) of them get kicked out of the department (aka series).

What also helps this season is, it doesn't take itself too serious. There are many funny moments, specially when Dex uses Harrison as bait ("better than donuts") for his "research". Apropos "research", I see the Dex/Lumen bond building an unholy alliance against her torturers but I don't think there'll be an affair between them (she is to disturbed/abused and HM, Julia Stiles just visually isn't on par with Dex' previous girls). And, last but not least, there is something about the babysitter that just feels "wrong" :). "Dexter" and women with strong European accents usually mean one thing: big trouble! I have a feeling where this side-thread might be going, but it's just speculation ;).

So, my friends, watch it and enjoy it. It's tense, it doesn't take itself too serious and it's as original as it ever was (and a bit more than that).

Olympic acting and empathic new dual character ; contorted and strained development ; stimulating arcs and blossoming "BatisGuerta", or not
igoatabase18 October 2010
La Belle et la Bête, probably the best French fairy tale to depict the bolt from the blue encounter between Julia Stiles character and Dexter. Was she convincing as Lumen Pierce ? Definitely ! They found the perfect match to Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C. Hall olympic skills. To tell the truth so far I had only seen her in teenage movies, 10 Things I Hate About You and Save the Last Dance. But after watching one of them I remember telling my sister she would be the next big star. Of course I had a crush on her and wasn't objective but now I realize that she proved I was right because her performance was both disturbing and heartbreaking. The poor scared kitten trapped in the monster lair ? I've probably thought way too much time to Masters of Horror's Jenifer but I suspected her profile to be as wicked as Lila Tournay in season 2. Of course she's nothing like her because it would feel like déjà vu but you should definitely be excited by her past, present and future. This installment was about the second, hand in hand with our favorite cereal daddy, but we also had a furtive glimpse at the others. She should instantly grow on you and her fate is so intriguing that the inevitable ending was painful, the good way. My only complains would be about a questionable lighting in a building and the relatively predictable development even if it was twisted enough. I think they could have put some extra efforts to puzzle us even more. However the action was so intense, even more than in past episodes, that there was little room to think straight. With an obsessed Quinn on Dex's tail like Doakes was, Deb investigating the creepy case in her crispy way and the baby at home to take care of I already predict a captivating season ! Even the whole "BatisGuerta" gibberish is starting to make sense but I wouldn't mind a Head First Death™ for our two luv birds.

Intense Episode [9/10]

Warning: Spoilers
(S5. E4) My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 5 Episode 4 ''Beauty And The Beast'': Episode 3 was great and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. So the babysitter is gone, I don't blame her. Really curious about what Dex is going to do with that girl. He has to let her go eventually. Im glad that the babysitter decided to come back, she seems to be good for Harrison. Oh boy the girl escaped. Wow Quinn got so close to the truth about Kyle Butler aka Dexter. I wonder what does it mean when that girl said that it is not over? Could this mean more bad guys for Dexter to visit? Overall an amazing episode, my rating is 9/10.

Love the show, but still...

Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes the plot devices employed to keep the story moving are just out of whack with common sense. In this episode it all came to a crash at the end.

Deborah and the cops go into an apartment looking for murderers in Miami, yet they're surprised by over ten illegals living in a one bedroom? It's Miami. There at least five cops in the raid, yet NONE support Deb when she goes through a gaping hole in the closet to an adjacent room to confront the suspect? Even after Baptista calls in for a "clear" and she doesn't answer? Where were the rest of them at? Certainly not surrounding the building because apparently a guy with a machete can just hop out the window and be gone. I'll cut Deb some slack for being a terrible shot since she was running on no sleep but not for being surprised by the outcome of her stand-off. She was tied up by (and romantically involved with) the Ice Truck Killer AND she's a cop! She should be a little more resilient to gritty crime.

Dexter figures out his new buddy is a runaway, leaves her in a state of medicated distress, AND leaves a bottle of pills near at hand. Later when she feigns suicide he's duped way too easily for a guy who was kidnapped and thrown in the trunk of a car not too long ago. Further, after she turns the tables on him and locks him in he simply busts the lock by shouldering the door? She didn't try to jimmy the door or escape through a window or anything before he came back? That lock was weak and it's doubtful Dex would have used a piece of crap lock or secured a latch somewhere anybody with a minimal amount of force could wrench it free.

The three dudes in the car note a deranged chick in the swamp, laugh, and then drive off? Really? WITHOUT looking in the rear view mirror to see the guy hiding step up to the side of the road and subdue her! No way.

But all that being said, I'm still a fan. I like the plot progression of this season so far. Julia Stiles is great, the dynamic between Dex and Deb is awesome, Quinn's whining about Kyle Butler is interesting enough (although it was a pretty huge leap I thought), and the internal affairs issue with Baptista is mildly entertaining. (Although any IA cop who would jeopardize his position for a hummer from a department chief is stupid. Like she's not just going to entrap him in order to take the heat off her husband. A guy who has already put a boy in blue in the hospital. That doesn't make a lot of sense.)

I'm trying to help you
dannylee-780828 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
1. Dexter tries to save a witness 2. Nanny quits and returns 3. Quinn's unto Dexter

Dexter finds himself in a new situation - having a witness. He risks a lot trying to save her, which he probably wouldn't have done in the past. Looks like Dexter's trying to save her because of his guilt of not being able to save Rita. Quinn is on Dexters tails and it is reminiscent of Doakes in the earlier seasons. Will we get another face off and it'd be complicated because of a potential romance between Debra and Quinn? Season feels a little messy because there is no interesting main plot to hold everything down together.
