One of the Best Episodes...
maseve21 December 2011
That there has been, there is, and possibly that there is going to be!!! It is just perfectly mastered!!! It just touches you, and very deeply! I could, I would, and I will watch it again! It is so much drama, intensity, anger, sadness, happiness, and much more feelings involved in this episode, that it is just AMAZING! You disagree so much with Shane, that at the same time you just have to agree with him, and understand that he is right! And that for as much as you wish somebody would just shoot him in the head, as if he was a Walker, He is doing the right thing, and specially, the necessary thing to do!!! And let's not even get into Rick, because, sometimes he is kind of a softy, but at the end of the episode, he did the perfect thing to do! In the end what happened to Sophia, it is kind of his fault. And he dealt with it like a man, like he should!

PERFECT!!!

This show deals with the drama of having hope.
austrailian27 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
From a person who has watched an average of five hours of television a day since I was six years old, I will simply say this . . .

I saw the cliffhanger of Commander Riker giving Lieutenant Worf the order to fire on a "Borg assimilated" Jean-Luc Picard.

I saw the cliffhanger of Agent Moulder aiming his weapon at his alien-altered mother as she screams and shrieks at Moulder to shoot her before "The Conspiracy" overtakes them.

And . . . Just when I thought this show was a pretty good drama that happened to have zombies in it, I saw what was left of Sophia come out of that barn . . . only to have Rick bring a final order to an episode of chaos.

This is one of the greatest television episodes I have ever seen.

Period.

A powerhouse performance from Jon Bernthal drives this mid-season finale to greatness
kkoller069328 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
"Shane that's enough!" - Rick "You know what Rick, that is enough." Shane kills the zombie in front of Hershel.

Wow - what an ending. "Pretty Much Dead Already" has it's moments of greatness in this episode that come mainly in the final fifteen minutes. The confrontation between Dale and Shane was, yet again, strong and fierce. Even as Dale tries to defend his reasoning for taking the guns, Shane stops him and says, "Dale just shut up and give me the guns." Even after Dale pulls a gun on Shane, he is not able to pull the trigger. It is then that we know that Shane is fit for this apocalyptic world by slowly turning into a psychopath.

Another powerful scene was between Lori and Shane after Rick's informs his deputy that Lori is pregnant. The whole discussion about whether the baby was Rick's or Shane's was great specifically when Lori tells Shane that the baby, if his, will never be his but will be Rick's.

Finally the ending is where "The Walking Dead" really shines. The show is really powerful during sad moments that make you feel sorry for the character's and their decisions. The pilot of the series really showed this with the half-bodied zombie being killed by an apologetic Rick. That was great. In this episode, Rick kills Sophia who comes out of the barn. It was emotional, tragic and powerful. But even before the big shocker, Shane kept on shooting a zombie that Hershel was bringing to the barn. He shot it in the stomach, chest, heart and lung before killing it. Jon Bernthal, who plays Shane, was absolutely amazing in this scene. He shows his anger and frustration by torturing the zombie with bullets and Hershel with the truth. As Shane and the group killed all the zombies in the barn, Hershel watched and realized that these "sick people" are not sick but dead and dangerous.

The episode isn't without it's problems though. The lame joke with Maggie and Glenn with the "rotten egg" in the hat was . . . . really stupid. The writers were trying to be funny but it failed miserably. The scene with Shane saying that Rick isn't cut out for this world was sort of pushed in my opinion. While I do get that the show is trying to show that Rick and Shane are beginning to split apart, Shane saying that Rick isn't cut out for this world wasn't as thought out as I wish it was. Instead of saying it to Lori, Shane should have said it to Rick himself to make it a more powerful scene. Also wouldn't Maggie or anyone say that they have a little zombie girl in the barn after they have been searching for her the past couple of weeks? Come on, they put couldn't put the two together?

Saying that "Pretty Much Dead Already" is good is an understatement. The mid-season finale truly shine as probably the best episode so far in Season 2. While I think the episode "Cherokee Rose" with Shane killing Otis is pretty damn good, "Pretty Much Dead Already" might surpass it. In the end, I can't wait until February to see the final episodes unravel. 10/10

Man they hit me hard!!!
phoenix214928 November 2011
This is probably (probably, definitely) the best ending to an episode I have ever seen. This is "hope" gone wrong, in every direction! This is what I expect in an excellent horror/drama feature.... period! This is a fantastic series!

The digital jury decides it should be at least a 10 line text, so I will try to do it.

Since I watched the series I was a bit cautious, the acting could be a bit better at times, but kept curious of the characters involved. Felt the hope, anger and disappointments. It grew at me, the people felt real. I was disappointed in the possibility it would have ended at season one.

This is the one of those moments you seldom feel (and people seldom appreciate!!!!) like the ending of say.... The Myst, or The Road all together!

This ending lets you feel a world without hope, losing hope.....

The most emotional moment in television history!
jegan-ceg28 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this show was full of fun, killing zombies, survival horror, twists and turns etc.

But this episode just gave a heart attack to me. When Sophia comes out as a zombie, i literally grabbed my heart for the whole 5 minutes. A chill shiver went down my spine as she approaches the survivors. Oh man! the moment Sophia takes the last step towards Rick, their eyes meet. In the eyes of Rick, you see sadness engulfed.. and in the eyes of Sophia, you see what is left of humanity. Then Rick with the sadness in his eyes, pulls the trigger!

When everyone call them "walkers", Herschel cannot agree since his loved ones are part of them. Every viewer thinks they are dead bodies until they saw Sophia as a walker! The most emotional things i have ever seen on a television show! Hats off!

Did Not See This Coming!
g-bodyl4 June 2014
This is the seventh episode of the second season of Walking Dead and it is by far, the best episode of the series. It's incredibly tense and is full of many surprises. I also must credit for acting mainly Jon Bernthal. Shane is slowly losing his humanity, and Bernthal does an incredible job in portraying that. If you're looking for action, well there is plenty of it here. There is less character development, and more action here and this will surely please folks who are tired from the previous slower episodes.

In this episode, "Pretty Much Dead Already," Glenn tells the entire group about the walkers in the barn which infuriates the group, but none more so than Shane. Meanwhile, Herschel doesn't want anything more to do with the group, so he tells Rick to be gone within the week.

Overall, this is an excellent episode and rather depressing, which I mean in a good way. It's action-packed and it's full of surprises. I was entertained, but I also got a little emotional. It's the best episode yet. I rate this episode 10/10.

excellent - the best yet
greg-201-51978925 June 2012
I think this might be the only review I have given 10/10

Having enjoyed series 1 I launched into series 2 with gusto

After the first episode I hoped it would be better, and the second episode was. When Sophia was lost and then Karl was shot it was getting better but I had felt the last 4 episodes were losing their shine.

As with many second seasons time is spent on character development, not a bad thing, and it pays off here.

There are emotional push-pull moments and you can see things developing with several possible outcomes dependent on the director's/writer's wishes.

All I will say is look out for a belter of an end, how they will top this I don't know.

What an End!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
firozmirzamirza18 February 2017
First of all let me get calmed down after what i saw in the end. A greatest ending in any show till date. Amazing..!!! Just Incredible..!!!! Now i don't know whose idea was it to do such an ending (to all writers who thot this take a bow..respect)but it gets you...nobody i mean no one saw that ending coming. This is my first review om IMDb. It was such a grtt ending that it forced me to signed up on IMDb :) I don't think the writers can top this ending with any other ending they are planning for future episodes. Gosh!!! I am still reeling with that dramatic ending. I am running out of praises. The show can go only higher from this point. Hopefully. till then give this writers a round of applause and also some time to breathe for thinking even better ending than this so that we will get entertained in the coming episodes. :)

Walking Dead Comes Alive
Narcissist0014 April 2020
This is the Red Wedding of TWD, the turning point, the episode that grabs you and makes you pay attention!! Zombies are not usually my thing so I came late. I found the show started well and got a bit slow but this episode has definitely made we want more. I just hope this is a sign of great things to come!

Jaw dropping, heart rendering stuff
Jon_3063 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Warning: Spoilers! Simply put this is one of the best things I've ever seen on television. The end scene grips you right from the get go and it never lets go. Shane is just brilliant I'm this scene, shooting the walker to show Hershel that it's not alive a particular highlight. But when Sophia walks out of the barn your emotions are thrown all over the place and suddenly you don't look at them as dead and it's brilliantly done. I was literally shocked and am not ashamed to admit I had tears rolling down my face. I just hope the rest of the series lives up to this, a hard task as I rate it as one of the best moments I've seen on TV.

Man That Hit Me Hard
slightlymad2224 October 2014
Plot In A Paragraph: With Lori's secret revealed, a bigger problem arrived when Hershel's secret also gets out, and with him refusing to acknowledge the worlds new reality, the group are divided over what happens next.

Melissa McBride is excellent as Carol, she shares a lovely scene with Norman Redus Daryl early on, and the is wonderful at the end. Jon Bernthall is superb as the increasingly unstable Shane. Jeffrey DeMunn shines again as Dale, as does Scott Wilson as Hershel, whilst Sarah Wayne Callies is the most annoying character in the show as Lori. Whilst Andrew Lincoln is at his finest as Rick who is just desperately trying to keep it all together.

A good episode before a heartbreaking bloodbath at the end.

and_mikkelsen7 January 2024
OH man.. what an insane episode! After some rather slow episodes, everything changes in thid episode in an explosion of events! Almost like a Domino-effect!

This marks the episode where Shane really starts going down a darker path! Every scene with him is intense as he gets more unpredictable! Awesome scenes with him and dale! Incredible characterdrama! When you know how the show progresses, Shane just.. ahead of his time!

The final scene with the barn was incredible and broke my heart! This show proves that their is no mercy in this world or for the viewers! Its a horrible place where you should only expect the worst, even if you hope for the best!

Somewhat boring
kikiboo_817 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Sophia being dead/a walker is no surprise. It's amazing how anyone thought she stood a chance of surviving for so long without either being eaten or turned into one. It might seem cold, but it was to be expected. I never felt anything for her before, I surely didn't start now either. Ah well. Let's see what happens next.

Heading for Dead
galahad58-129 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The Walking Dead is starting to fall into the typical mini-series/series trap: there has to be a villain in the group, there is an annoying person the audience wants to see fail, the storyline takes a turn for the worse. The Andrea character is long past her time to die. She is annoying and dreadful and not well written. Shane turning to the dark side is TV garbage. First off, he is now more of a danger to the community than the dead are--so it is time for Rick to walk up to him and blow his head clean off. In a series of dark times, the writers would be better off finding new ways to engage the audience rather than the formulatic writings that are repetitious of every single show on television.

'The Walking Dead' is far from dead with this episode
TheLittleSongbird4 June 2018
Had heard nothing but great things about 'The Walking Dead' from friends and IMDb reviewers. It took a while to get round to watching, both from being busy and also not being sure whether it would be my cup of tea. Finally getting round to it a few years ago and slowly working my way through it, having had a very long to watch and review list, 'The Walking Dead' turned out to be very much my cup of tea and as good as the hype made it out to be, have found it extremely addictive.

All the previous episodes of Season 2 were very good to great, but the season hits a high point with its magnum opus "Pretty Much Dead Already", one of the show's best ever and the best episode since the very first episode "Days Gone Bye" for me. And a strong reminder of how Seasons 1-5 of 'The Walking Dead' to me were absolutely brilliant and seeing the show in its full glory days (Season 6 was uneven, Season 7 was a huge disappointment and am still debating whether to watch Season 8). It is as emotional, complex and as tense as one would expect , at the same time it has adrenaline and guts.

It still shocks me at how an intelligent, well-made (so much so that it is easy to mistake it for a film) show about zombies could be made when so many films have tried and failed abysmally to do so.

"Pretty Much Dead Already" is the tightest, most exciting and most emotionally investable episode of Season 2 for me and one of all of the above for the show. It is the first episode of the season to not feel as heavy in talk.

Like all the episodes of the show, "Pretty Much Dead Already" is incredibly well made in the production values, with gritty and audacious production design, photography of almost cinematic quality, effects that look good, have soul and are not overused or abused and pretty frightening make-up that make the zombies even more terrifying. The music is haunting and affecting, having presence but never being too intrusive.

The writing generally is intelligent and thought-provoking, with lots of tension and emotional resonance and already showing signs of character complexity and multiple layer storytelling. The more eventful scenes at the end, where the action kicks in, are thrilling and terrifying as well as uncompromising.

Appreciated the ever strong and still progressing story and character building (the character development is some of the best of the show up to this point), which the episode has a bigger emphasis on, and that the pace is never dull or rushed. The conclusion is the highlight, not many endings of 'The Walking Dead' are as shocking, gut-wrenching or emotional as the one here.

Everything is tautly paced without rushing through the more important parts and emotionally complex. The world building is already stunningly immersive and effective. Direction is smart and atmospheric while the show throughout has been strongly acted.

Overall, amazing. 10/10 Bethany Cox

This season so far has been slow but worth it
goat-0405430 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Man do I love the writing in this season. The growing conflict between Shane and Rick is masterfully done. This episode was a counting time bomb till the very last scene. And what a scene that was. Shane shouting on the top of his lungs and opening the barn like a lunatic, them shooting all the walkers and the cherry on top, the reveal of Sophia. This episode is one of the best in my opinion.

The Last Walker in the Barn
claudio_carvalho29 November 2011
Rick is dealing with Hershel to stay in the farm and he tells that Lori is pregnant to Hershel and to Shane. Hershel asks Rick to go with him to the woods to help him in to bring two walkers that are trapped in the quicksand to the barn. Carl asks Shane to stay in the farm to seek out Sophia. Meanwhile, the loudmouth Glenn discloses to the survivors that the barn is crowded of walkers, and the psychopath Shane decides to kill the zombies in the barn. He gives weapons to the survivors and releases the walkers from the barn. Then Shane, Andrea, Daryl, T-Dog and Glenn shoot all the walkers in front of Hershel. After the butchery, the last walker leaves the barn…

"Pretty Much Dead Already" is the most dramatic conclusion of "The Walking Dead" so far. This episode is about the lack of personality of Glenn; the truculence of Shane; the leadership of Rick; but mostly about the last walker in the barn. The final scene is heartbreaking, and gives the sensation of a punch on the stomach. People blame Shane, who is unable to control his temper, for what happened in the barn, but the great responsible is actually Glenn, who can not keep his big mouth shut. It is impressive how sad I was with this episode. My vote is nine.

Title (Brazil): "Pretty Much Dead Already"

Note: On 10 April 2016, I saw this show again.

Sophia Shows Where Romero Lost Track !
jbirtel-17 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Wow!

Mid Season finale of Season 2 caught me off guard. This ranks with the best moments of the entire Living Dead Mythos that George Romero began with 67's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD.

It also debates why the original Ghoul Maestro's scare meter kinda loses it after the brilliant DAWN OF THE DEAD.

Why discuss Romero's films on a review for this episode of WALKING DEAD? Because it further emphasizes Frank Durabant's attraction to the graphic novels that first and foremost; it's character, character, character that must dominate the drama, to elevate the horror and the tragedy, that will ultimately carry the most impact.

I love DAY OF THE DEAD. But I didn't like it as much at the theater in 1985. The reason was the zombie character 'Bub'. Even though actor Howard Sherman's excellent portrayal of Bub may arguably stand proudly along side Boris Karloff's performance of the Frankenstein Monster, the bottom line is this:

I don't want to understand the social development of zombies.

I want to be scared of zombies! I want to be horrified by them! I want to s#*t my pants at the thought I could be ripped apart and eaten by them. And I want to be justifiably sickened and saddened when a living character is turned into one of...THEM.

That's It !!!

Beginning with DAY', continuing with LAND, and ending with SURVIVAL; Romero stayed committed with character; but lost it with the Zombies; that peaked with LAND'S unbelievable, roaring ghoul leader: Big Daddy.

WALKING DEAD returns the mythos back to Romero's orgins where it should have remained all along. For an AMC TV series; of course there's going to be slow spots as the story unravels. But that only makes the segments such as the barn door incident; and what emerges forth; having a gut punching impact, that stays with the viewer, long after the episode ends.

Nicely edited, with music swelling to an appropriate sadness, this mid season episode ends on a powerful high note. February can't come soon enough.

Best episode so far
diego_hentschke29 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
No spoilers ahead.

This was perfect. Shocking. With so many hard moral decisions to make that its hard to keep track or pick sides as everything unrolls in a fast pace.

We are forced to be in the shoes of both sides of the dilemma in an brutal fashion, with an amazing and surprising finale.

There are no obivious stereotypical villains, as may strike at first, just great situations created by the writers, that put the characters into taking extreme measures, and then facing their own mistakes or misjudgements as reality hit them hard in the face.

Great acting too, by almost all cast.

I hope that the rest of the season can keep this quality, but I seriously doubt it.

The World of the Strongest
inefableataraxia19 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Walkers are dangerous but Hershel doesn't know he have lived outside that world. Even if they are considered humans gone crazy people they really aren't like Jenner said about the part of the brain that makes you human is dead. Shane had gone mad and now is being honest with what he think. He wants to protect the ones he care for but by the incorrect means. You could debate that in that era there isn't incorrect means. And so he free up the walkers instead of killing them upside and rejects everything the hoster thinks. Only taking action, the world of the strongest. Sophia appears but now as a walker, neglecting all effort Daryl put into saving the girl.

ahmxii29 March 2022
Despite what I had guessed already, this one was the best episode so far. It wasn't about whats gonna happen, this was about how its gonna happen.

That acting by Jon Bernthal was meritorious, how he acted impulsive, can't believe. I think he was acting himself as his impulsive nature. Anyway, I dont know but the episode was amazing so far.

very good if you change the intended message's perspective
ajaysinghg04228 December 2022
This episode and the series so far has added nothing new to the genre of "zombie zeitgeist" so far which is one of the reason i fail to recognize the merit behind the high scoring of this series at all in the first place, the first 4 seasons are stupendous and deserve high rankings

This show adds nothing good to the world and the reason is that almost all the characters in this series are awful people unworthy of the gift of life, the show is poorly made, each acted out scenario is illogical not only because its portrayed as such in some bs art thingy but because the production staff and the actors are incompetent utterly and entirely

the only redeeming quality is that it can be interpreted as good only and only if they take that "bs" route and spin it in some genuine and articulate & meritorious way but the memes of this world upto Dec 2022 show otherwise

it is a waste of time overall. 1/10.
