A Sega 32X/Sega CD Infomercial disguised as a TV show
sillyheart197731 January 2017
Way back in the early 90's, the video game systems to own were either the super Nintendo or the Sega genesis...both 16 bit systems dominated the market and were hot to own. As the 16 bit era began to die out, bigger system with more power began to hit the market and with the new and more power systems such as "The playstation" , Sega of America began to develop some updates to the quickly aging sega genesis. Their first attempt was the sega cd system, although it was still a 16 bit system, the cd-rom improved sound and graphics abit, and shortly after only months before the Sega was to release their newest high tech system "the sega saturn", the sega 32x was released as a cheap alternative to the higher priced systems. Although the system was doomed from the start, it did manage to release a few good titles ..Mortal kombat 2, Doom..etc.. As a way of advertising this failed system, Sega created an Infomercial to advertise it in a very odd way....disguised as a "Beverly hills 90210" type show, with games as the plot. The Infomercial/show was called "Absolutely rose street" and feature 5 good looking teen-somethings who had their own show called "game beat" where they were to advertise systems and games for the Sega. Threaten by the "big" boss in charge with closure to their show, they must come up with an new episode and feature something exciting and new to show and that's were the sega 32x steps in. It was a cheesy commercial that had the time frame of 28 minutes, and feature actually very little games the 32x was going to release...mostly just screen shots of a racing game and star wars. The production value was as hammy as it gets, set in the sunny beaches of California with the styles of the times...if anything, watching it now brings back more of a nostalgic feel for those who were 90's teens. My first viewing of this long forgotten Sega Infomercial was only this year (2016) and that's due to youtube, but I am sure as a teen i may have jumped up and down waiting for this new system to arrive. To this day, I still own my seg/cd/32x and still play it once and awhile to bring back some old memories. I'd say, if your a sega fan of old times, look it up, check it out, roll your eyes and move on...if anything, you might get a flash back from old times.
