Off track scenes
Ashmystir9127 February 2023
All is good except the whipping of the working girls. Absolutely no point in it except to gain ratings. Sad to see the horrible treatment of the native Indians but I suppose it may serve as a reality check of your they were treated. Much more darker series then yellowstone and 1883. Hope the writing and story line doesn't go off track. Can only hope it's doesn't get even darker or you may lose audience. All of which is great acting all around. Want to see something that doesn't depress me. Beautiful scenery and costume. Will watch at least this season so far. Just not sure what audience the writers are catering to in episode 7 & 8.

A bit much of the sex scenes
sharmonpierson25 February 2023
I do not think the three-some scene or the dominanting scene were needed. I hope that upcoming episodes do not continue with this theme. The point is clearly made of who the 'bad guys' are, those whom you do not want the trust. But those are images that I could do without in my head.

There is alot of hard hitting issues in the episode, the continued reality of what the indigenous people went through; how those who should of been loving and kind, were not, and have scared generations who still need to choose to heal and not be victims of a past that was not their - but should also not be forgotten.

I enjoy the series, but will be skipping the sex/intimate scenes.

as i said in the last review

The Rainwater scenes just breaks hearts. I'm not crying, you're crying. I never thought I'd get pleasure watching the harming of a priest, but as postmodernists posit, justice is subjective.

The episode starts strong with Banner Creighton and companions flash stripes to show why this show is on Paramount+PLUS, though the tail-end (get it?) does not end as pleasantly as foreshadowed.

Harrison Ford's Jacob Dutton delivers a rousing monolog-argument that not only explains the Dutton clan creed and modus operandi but a real takeaway exposition to how politics CAN NOT be served at a Dutton dining table. If you were to watch all of Sheridan's Yellowstone cowboy-verse, Jake spills the proverbial beans. *Spoiler* (?)

And...let's be clear, Spencer Dutton climbed out of a Hemingway novel to star in this show. A laconic American hunter falls in love, abroad, amidst the fallout of war. I freaking love it. Taylor Sheridan just channeling Papa Hemingway in script and worldview, I tune in every week to live vicariously in these scenes.

(also add, reviewers spouting 1883 is far better than 1923? Apples and oranges, friends.)

Well, this show is now off the rails entirely. RIP
Ithilfaen28 February 2023
Never been much of a fan of Sheridan's writing. His villains are too broad and predictable. His heroes are too honorable and predictable.

I gave this one a shot for Helen Mirren.

It was mildly watchable, with more than the occasional eye roll at the ridiculousness of dialogues and villainous villainy of the baddies.

But this episode is just way under any standard I have set for myself as a viewer.

Between the Princess and the Hunter paperback novel we have to suffer for half the show, and the over the top mustache twirling of the Villain in Chief (now with obligatory literal sadism to boot), not to mention the making a mockery of the pain many Native American children suffered at the hand of the government, by piling up ridiculous violent scenes like some tragic Jenga, I just can't keep watching and I'll be skipping the rest of the show entirely.

This is the true religion
terrylarosa20 February 2023
Terrible, demanding and wanting to enslave those that rebel or don't believe. And make no mistake; it is a form of enslavement. This is religion in its truest form back then. Not offering comfort or sanctuary but condemning unless you follow their doctrine. Aces for Sheridan displaying it correctly. Guess Spencer is not going to arrive in Yellowstone till the last scene, if then. Also nice to see not one but three couples who are in love and not bitter with each other. Can't wait for the season finale and what awaits us for the next season. And no despicable, horrible Beth to boot. Great show and now better than Yellowstone.

Christians hate it so much
SithHunter5 June 2023
All these white Christians having meltdowns over their evil church doing bad things is hilarious.

News flash, the church has been and always will be pure evil, murderous greedy organisation that preys on the stupid and naive. There is no god, just evil people using fake stories in a book to justify evil actions against others.

History remembers the evil actions of the church and what demons did in gods name. America was and is a cesspool for religious nuts, self righteous white people give white people like me a bad name, enjoy ur eternity of nothing you delusional villains.

God won't judge you because he's imaginary, mankind judges you.

Excellent picture
trifonn22 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A great continuation of an incredible story. This series sheds light on the denouement of the backstory from the previous series. Perhaps this series is worthy and incredible. Also the whole series as a whole. The best of recent work for Kharisov Ford and other actors. I hope the directors don't ruin the ending...The advantage of this series is not a trivial and exciting plot. The relationship between the main characters flowing organically against the backdrop of the main plot, forced to admire and empathize. This series is turning into something epic and memorable. This series has become a great addition to this picture. Not all modern series are so exciting.

Episode 7
bobcobb3015 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
1923 is probably a little bit less quality than 1883, but it is coming into its own in a way. Not too many scenes were boring here, which is an upgrade from how things were going on early on with the show.

I don't like the new premium drama style where some characters barely appear or don't appear until the very end though. Spencer not appearing until there was like 10 minutes left did not make a lot of sense other than they thought it was "artistic" to do it that way, but it was not.

Regardless, a good episode here and it has me excited for the finale next week to see how this first season ends.

Gratuitous scenes
chris1563-616-99316222 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I've thoroughly enjoyed Yellowstone. 1886 and, up until this episode,1923.

The gratuitous objectification and the casual use of violence against women as entertainment (and of course the obligatory cliche of men's girl-on-girl fantasy) was deeply disappointing. We know who the bad guys are and these two scenes contributed absolutely nothing to the story. It really saddens me to see excellent writing and acting demeaned in this way.

Taylor Sheridan has written some great female characters which makes it even more disheartening to see him resort to scenes which seem to be aimed at the readers of lads mags.

Why?! So unnecessary and not in line with other episodes
sdimcg26 February 2023
I really don't understand the gratuitous sex and trashy garbage in this episode. Yellowstone, 1883 and this show have stayed away from some of the typical Hollywood cliches up to this point. It is very disappointing to see them start adding in unnecessary nudity, graphic sex and unnecessary storyline that adds nothing to the overall plot or quality of the show. It's lazy and frustrating writing and really makes me think twice about continuing to watch. Why do they need to ruin a perfectly good show when the characters and stories were already engaging and entertaining. Please don't cater to the lowest common denominator-there are plenty of trashy shows out there for people that have no ability to appreciate actual entertainment.

Bizare episode seemingly writing by several separate teams of writers
octapla20 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Rainwater storyline... amazing, heartbreaking, excruciating, cathartic, reflective.

Helen Miran - any scene with her in it, even with no dialogue, is easily a 7-8 out of 10. She is just outshining everyone.

Rest of the action with the family and cowboys on the Dutton ranch... starting to show promise and is building towards something interesting.

Strange out of place kitchen scene with the two "working ladies" and Timothy Dalton's character that added nothing to the story nor character development and seemed completely out of place.

And finally *sigh*... Spencer and Alex. The most bizarre dialogue written and zero chemistry between them, and the awful over the top English accent and mannerisms that have really blighted this series from the start. Notwithstanding some of the above criticisms, the episode was almost becoming one of the most interesting and promising ones (especially with the Rainwater story) but then the last 10 minutes completely spoilt it with the Spencer and Alex scenes. Would really love to understand what was done differently in this series as it bares practically no resemblance to 1883 or any of the Yellowstone series.

Gratuitous Sex, Lazy Storytelling
mlj-2045227 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Sheridan's writing is uneven in every show he has created, from brilliant relationships (Rip & Beth in Yellowstone) to downright absurd detail (on a dark night, follow the path by watching the sparks from the hooves of the horse in front of you striking rocks in, 1883)

This latest episode in 1923 is no exception - some great moments - Mirren carries the entire series while Ford delivers an unexpectedly weak presence - to a contrived, wooden conversation with a young woman in the trauma a recent miscarriage. A scene clearly written by a man with no understanding of this moment in a woman's life.

In addition, Sheridan uses great swathes of time to introduce characters and scenes that are, literally, irrelevant to the story. We do learn that all Catholics, categorically, are evil (who knew?) and that heartless racism is the order of the day.

And then the gratuitous sex scenes . . . Worthless filler signifying nothing but the laziness of a writer who can't be bothered to tell a linear narrative.

There's so much story that could be told, so many main characters whose character/personality could be explored but all that potential is edged out by tangential forays leading nowhere or stupid, lazy sexual clichés . . .

While trying to like it, Sheridan is tempting this reviewer to abandon his writing, altogether. Time will tell but, it's unlikely that this series will be counted as 'great', which is a genuine missed opportunity - perhaps the inescapable consequence of writing so many shows in such rapid succession.

What did I just watch?...
ajmillar23 February 2023
1923 had big shoes to fill following as a sequel to the masterpiece 1883.

Unfortunately, 1923 has not been able to live up to it's predecessor. 1923 began to decline rapidly, in quality as soon as the "Alex" character made her unfortunate appearance.

The actress is simply terrible and so is the writing for her character.

The other problem is the Native American storyline which is largely incoherent, egregiously violent and meandering.

The anti-Christian bias is so over the top and vicious that it is repellent.

1923 is so bad, it's unwatchable-I'll just continue watching 1883.

1883>1923..

This is the one that lost me
jordanbperez16 November 2023
I've already accepted that this show would not be as impactful, expertly told, and well written as 1883, but this one was truthfully pretty bad. All plot lines really had a bad stretch here. The main Duttons continue to wait around in their house for the third episode in a row. The Native American storyline explodes into gratuitous violence against cartoonish bad guys while still failing to make any connection to the rest of the show. Spencer and Alex to make almost no headway and have no new development. And there are two completely unnecessary and very graphic sex scene.

This show should have and certainly could have been one season. The past three episodes have been dragging along and to see so little progress in this one coupled with pointless and highly uncomfortable violence and sex is highly disappointing. I will watch the last episode but I've already given up on the show.

relentless cruelty and gratuitous violence
karen-heffernan14 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The Native American experience in this time period was bleak, there is no doubt about that. But the Native American storyline has been relentlessly bleak, gratuitously violent and just sloppily written. The scene that was particularly galling in this episode was when Hank walked away and left his shotgun on the ground next to the priest, allowing the priest to shoot him in back. There's just no way he would have left the shotgun there. Ridiculous.

I'm considering skipping the Teonna storyline altogether; I'm weary of the gratuitous violence, cruelty and gore and cruel and doesn't add any value to the series so far.

Going nowhere, slowly
mhbjc26 November 2023
I hate to compare this to 1883 but they asked for it, being written about the same family by the same creator. There is no comparison. Most of these characters are not as likeable. The Indian torture was done with no tie-in to why we are going to care about her. Having said that, Aminah is saving the day. Is anyone not rooting for her? And I couldn't be more disappointed in the gratuitous sex scenes with Timothy Dalton. We get it. His character is ruthless. That added nothing! Then there is Alex. OMG! I want her to drown or at least shut up! I don't wish her on Aunt Cara, they have enough to worry about. Can we get a prequel to 1883? I'm more interested in them.

Worst episode of 1923
guerrio5 July 2023
This episode wasn't downright horrible, but there were a lot of straight up goofy, silly things. The writers for all three yellowstone shows have the wackiest ideas sometimes, and just make the most over-the-top nonsense happen for entertainment value. Most of these are just cringe worthy, mainly because these kind of scenes add absolutely no value to the episodes and don't establish anything new. The whipping scene. Yeah. That was literally a complete copy and paste from Game of Thrones. I'd give this episode a 7 if it weren't for that scene. We get it Taylor Sheridan, rich miner man is bad. Now make him into a Walmart brand of Joffrey too. The scenes where people are punching each other are straight up goofy too. Idk. This whole franchise is really the great value version of other, actually amazing shows that get less viewership that tackle most of these issues much better. Longmire. Hell on Wheels. Just to name a couple. This episode truly showcases, to me, that these writers are mediocre at best. At least they finally show Montana in the winter. Just missing the several feet of snow on the ground.

Ridiculous sexuality
sja-awesome5 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The show is mostly somewhat passable except for I don't understand the horrible brutal Indian girl part at all adds absolutely nothing to the story and she makes everything excessively violent for no reason.. yeah we get it White religious people back then were super bad blah blah blah. And what's with the Instagram model who plays the guy's wife? Could they have not at least tried to style her so she looked like she was part of the times. And then we go on to the insane soft core porn and hardcore sexualization of women in this episode just try to get horny young men to rate this higher. Lazy and pathetic lack of writing. Not to mention the constant f word which they did not say in 1923. It doesn't make your show edgy and cool to constantly add that in. It just shows that you have a lack of knowledge of history and are too lazy to try to understand the words they used. Bad enough that overly dramatic things happen and then are immediately righted so there was no point to them happening at all besides minor shock value. Honestly the only good part of the story is the guy in Africa and his wife who is one of the only good actresses.
