best season premier is finally here

Warning: Spoilers
I'm still shaking from this gut wrenching, intense, heart touching and deep episode. my god it was Top Notch. everything that you expected to see is all packed up right here in this episode. a very deep character development (Tyreese, carol), a lot of excellent gore action scenes, and finally, terminus is a crazy place full of cannibals, something we've been waiting to find out for so long (7 moths!). but that's not all. they have actually a background for behaving like this. and Carol's now truly a Badass. she did excellent job. Mary/Carol scene was just perfect. walkers were awesome. all of them are now together and everything is cool. we're just gonna have to see how long will it remain like this. by the way, that slaughterhouse scenes were so horrible and scary. my heart was like a damn rocket ball inside of my CHEST. the tearful reunions were also sweet and enjoyable to watch. I am in a very good place right now. I got what I WANTED. I am absolutely satisfied with this episode an finally I hope that this season will keep the pace and action and Character study for the upcoming Episodes.and what can i say after that final final scene. someone so sweet is back.Morgan is back Score 10/10

A gruesome and thrilling start to a season with great potential
SpoodermanDerp13 October 2014
No Sanctuary was one of those The Walking Dead episodes that is completely awesome. Just like Too Far Gone last Season 4, it never failed to keep me at the edge of my seat and make my heart race like rapid fire. I was not expecting this episode to be that great. The first episodes of each season do not really engage me immediately unlike this one. They cut all the crap and started the action with matching pitch perfect storytelling.

The episode introduces us to what Terminus is all about. Gruesome images being shown back and forth added to the intensity of the episode and indeed did its job to creep me out. The visuals have improved very well if compared to previous seasons. Explosions and gut wrenching scenes looked great on screen. The episode also shows us the changes that Rick and his gang have went through. Rick is not the same calm farmer who would take violence as his last resort. In this one, violence was his key to escape Terminus and to save those he loves the most, his family. However, Carol had a far more unmerciful approach to Terminus. In the episode she is seen doing everything, no matter how cruel or wrong as long as it will be to save Rick and his gang. Just like in Season 4, Carol kicked ass in the episode. She became a strong female character last season and I'm expecting to see more of that this season as well. As for the story and pacing goes in the episode, amazing. I was never bored at any scene in the episode and remained at my seat looking terrified and couldn't even move. This episode had the same impact as Too Far Gone and deserves a spot at one of the best The Walking Dead episodes ever.

With gruesome and detailed visuals, thrilling action sequences, scenes that will drag you to the edge of your seat and great developed characters. This season is gonna be an amazing one.

Verdict: 9.5/10

The Best Episode
readjacksonporter13 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This was, in my opinion, the best episode so far of The Walking Dead. The wait for this premiere has felt like a long one, but the episode picks up just where it left off and makes you feel as if you never even quit watching the show.

This review will be quick and short, just like the episode felt.

The writers didn't waste their time dragging out this Terminus thing. They're in and they're out, leaving fire, blood and death in their wake. Refusing to focus on the cannibalism of the Terminus group was a wise choice. Even the producers of The Walking Dead know we, the viewers, can only handle so much. The short scenes of cannibalism were enough to make you queasy.

Each episode they find a new way to kill a zombie that tops the last. This time? Zombies on fire. Can't beat that.

The best part, though, about this episode is the few short minutes when the group finally reunites. Tears are shed and hugs are given, and it's right then that I realized how emotionally attached to these characters I've become.

I used to pity them, but as the series has progressed, I've come to love them.

Overall, 10/10. If the writers keep it up like this for the rest of the next 15 episodes, we may just have one incredible season on our hands.

A premiere we deserved!
kevinpaul199913 October 2014
The walking dead season 5 premiere has become one of the best premiere since the pilot . The blood , the violence , the emotions , the history , the return are key words on this episode . In fact , it was so well done that the episode just flew past the viewers .

Season 5 has started off promisingly . The make up was outstanding and the zombies look gnarly as hell. Some scenes will make you grab tight your pillow , sofa or whatever your sitting on .

We can see the slow but steady transformation that I'm sure is just beginning of Farmer Rick to Bada** Rick . Greg Nicotero has done a phenomenal job with the opener , he deserves some credit as well. Scott M. Gimple requires equal praise as the show runner . The way the last 3 episodes of season 4 came out was really well done and this episode lives up to every bit of it, if not better.

The episode ended satisfying many for sure , but I'd recommend sitting down for a little longer if the fans really want to loose their sh**.

THIS is how to start a new Series
c_hookham13 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The 5th season of the Walking Dead opens with some of the most gut-wrenchingly gripping television you'll ever see and then reduces you to tears with moments of sheer emotion.

Starting right off where we left Rick and co- locked up in a shipping container - we see just how far the inhabitants of terminus have fallen from their humanity and then, just when you think this cant get any darker an unexpected savior appears -and hell well and truly follows her.

The episode shows how the togetherness and sheer will of our plucky band can seemingly get them out of any situation and keep their humanity intact.

Emotionally sapping and gripping beyond words this opener bodes well for the new series.

They sure found out who they were screwing with
fredschaefer-406-62320413 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The Season 5 opener for THE WALKING DEAD is one of the most explosive and truly satisfying episodes in TV history, and I give all credit to Scott Gimple for giving us a show that paid off all the plot threads so carefully weaved in the second half of Season 4. Many fans complained of the slow pacing of the show after the fall of the prison, when whole episodes were devoted to the development of a couple of characters: Darryl and Beth go to the country club while Carole and Tyreese hide out in a cabin in the woods with a couple of peculiar little girls. And then there was the interminable trek to Terminus, which culminated with Rick and the gang imprisoned inside a railroad car awaiting the tender mercies of a community of cannibals.

Well there was nothing slow about NO SANCTUARY, no sooner had Rick, Bob, Darryl and Glenn been hauled to the killing room before all hell broke loose thanks to Carole, who turns out to be the big hero of this episode; how far has she come since her first appearance way back in Season 1. The battle of Terminus takes up the bulk of the show and it is surely the longest sustained set piece action scene of the entire series, a three sided slaughter between Rick and company, the Termites and a herd of walkers bent on eating anyone they can get their rotting claws on. The poor loon freed from the pod who gets eaten seconds after being released is surely the most unlucky person in the history of a show filled with them, even poor Otis got off better. Then there was Sam, from Season 4's INDIFFERENCE, who doesn't even get a line before his throat is slit, but don't feel bad for Robin Lord Taylor, he's doing great playing The Penguin on GOTHAM.

I don't think there has been an episode filled with more truly epic moments, but I think most people will say it is the reunions in the last half hour that makes the show, the look on Darryl and Rick's faces when the first see Carole will bring tears to the eyes, as well as Rick and Carl's first glimpse of baby Judith. For me, the best moment is at the cabin when Martin, who has forced Tyreese to go outside or he'll snap Judith's neck, suddenly realizes the walkers have gone silent, it's our tip off that something badass is about to happen and we're not disappointed.

The acting from all involved was excellent, even if some of the regulars spent most of the time in the background (Tara, Rosita). Andrew J. West as Gareth, the leader of Terminus, went about his murderous business with the attitude of a middle manager, while Chris Coy as his underling Martin, a man who would kill a baby with his bare hands, has to be one of the vilest characters yet. If Coy looked vaguely familiar, it was because he was on TRUE BLOOD a few seasons back. That there were no big deaths in the escape from Terminus shows that Rick Grimes really knew what he was talking about at the end of last season when said the denizens of Terminus did not know what kind of people they were screwing with. And on the subject of Terminus, the series of brief flashbacks revealed that they were one more in a long line of ordinary or even good people driven to depravity in the wake of the Zombie Apocalypse, they join a growing list that includes Joe, the Governor, and even Shane. The sight of those tables filled with items taken from their victims-watches, children's stuffed animals-shows how low they had allowed themselves to fall.

I do wonder how Carole got all that Walker blood and guts off her face so quickly in time for the big reunion; guess even if civilization ends, a girl can still find the time to spruce herself up.

I do worry that after such a great opening act, how can the rest of Season 5 sustain the momentum, but the final scene, which gives us a long anticipated return of a favorite character, does give me great hope that we haven't seen anything yet. When will Negan show up?

One of the Best Premiers I have ever seen...Best Episode Yet
serbian_00712 October 2014
The episode was euphoric, cathartic, near orgasmic. It was unpredictable and not at all what I was expecting. It had me gasping and gaping to the point where I couldn't swallow the food I was supposed to be snacking on. You cannot name one scene that wasn't awesome. The action was believable and mesmerizing. The show feels fresh for the first time in a long time. Unbelievable job, you sexy writers and producers! Keep this kind of writing going and this show will win every award you can name. The Terminus craze for human flesh doesn't come close to how hungry I am now for more of the Walking dead. 10 out of 10, 11 out of 10, hell 100 out of 10. Season 5 has raised the bar. I have never been more excited and left wanting more....well, except for that one time with...in the backseat of my....ahh nvm. Shut up and take my money!

Either You Are the Butcher or the Cattle

In Terminus, Rick and the survivors are ready to be slaughtered by the cannibals. Meanwhile, Carol and Tyreese capture a man from Terminus and Carol decides to investigate the place while Tyreese stays with Judith and the prisoner. Carol creates havoc in Terminus with the walkers while Rick and his friends escape from the slaughterhouse.

"No Sanctuary" is the promising beginning of the Fifth Season of "The Walking Dead". After so many months without "The Walking Dead", we fans are rewarded with an episode dramatic and full of action. This is the show of Carol, with an outstanding participation of this character; her reunion with Daryl and the survivors is touching. The story of the people of Terminus is also promising. How could a group of people lose her humanity and become cannibal butchers. My vote is ten.

Title (Brazil): "No Sanctuary"

Note: On 17 April 2016, I saw this show again.

This is what I'm talking about!
sirajq13 October 2014
My God Wasn't this one hell of an intense start to season 5 of The Walking Dead. The episodes starts essentially straight after the end of season 4, continuing the shows rapid rise in form over its past 4 episodes.

What we experience in this episode is intense visceral action, directed by Greg Nicotero, that The Walking Dead does so darn well. We are also given a bit of history about Terminus itself which is nice. But my god the real star of this episode was Carol, played with conviction by Melissa McBride. She was an incredible presence throughout this gruelingly intense episode.

Overall, if this is what we can come to expect from season 5, then bring it on! My body is ready to weather the oncoming onslaught of blood and emotion. 9/10. P.S: Stay after the credits if you want to crap your pants with excitement! Trust me... It is worth the clean up.

Entertaining but lazy
GaryBreslin201113 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
For an entire half of a season they built up tension for what Terminus could become, however once again the writers have completely wasted their time. Its much too rushed and its starting to lose purpose. This isn't the first time that they have thrown away a solid story, others include Lizzy and the claimers. Personally i think they should have at least tried to get like three or four episodes with them stuck in Terminus and this sort of thing is what is losing The Walking Dead interest, people want a good story not a rushed one with an overuse of action.

However, saying that the episode was still enjoyable. There was some well tension built action sequences, a nice little emotional moment towards the end with Judith, and a cliffhanger than definitely interests me and makes me want to see more, and see how they can develop Morgans story from here on, i just hope they don't keep rushing things like this because it would be a shame.

Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS.

This episode has such poor writing it's hilarious. In the scene where the people are getting their throats slit to bleed out, of course when they are about to do it to glen something makes the guy stop.. twice.. Then you have Carol shoot a BOTTLE ROCKET. Yes, a BOTTLE ROCKET, over 150 yards to perfectly hit a tank and make it explode. Everything just magically works out perfectly for this group of survivors!

Not only do they have to worry about walkers during their escape, but people with automatic weapons. And yet somehow, they all escape perfectly fine. What an absolute joke.

Emotional
stillwill813 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The Crew hanging by the whiskers of death, where able to pull through by sheer determination but more by providence and fate.

Terminus - i mean how did they descend to the lowest abyss of human mutilation without mercy, compassion or thought. They deserved to die horribly. I mean the tension was quite high watching the scene where i thought Glen would get it.

The reunion was so emotional, i cried. This episode is a sign that the writers might get it right with this season. The previous season (4) seemed to drag around a lot in episodes without hitting the nail on the head. This is the best episode ever.

Intensity, Explosions and some Emotion for good measure.
clanchiefbubba13 October 2014
It's been long awaited and finally the ultimate post apocalyptic world of The Walking Dead has returned and it could not have taken a better step forward. It's bold, exciting and still retains the same doom impending atmosphere the Walking Dead has become renowned for. Continuing on from were season 4 left off, Rick and his fellow survivors are held captive in Terminus after the false message luring them to the sanctuary turned out to indeed not offer safety and security, but doom. However Carol and Tyreese along with Rick's infant daughter Judith remain on the road to Terminus in the hopes of regrouping with Rick and the others. In it's short space of air time the episode establishes the themes we can expect from season 5 and sets the bar high. The Walking Dead is back and no doubt the writers want people to know they mean business. The episode serves as proof that the show has come a long way since season 1 on many fronts, from special effects to acting to pacing, this is what the fans have been waiting for. There's a lot on the line for Rick and his fellow survivors, and failure is just one bite away. Hunt or be hunted indeed.

What a BRUTAL and INSANE premiere!!
and_mikkelsen28 January 2024
Jesus christ... what a way to kick off season 5! The most horrorfying episode i have seen yet! Images that will never leave my mind... like never!

This was just BEYOND anything you could expect from a season premiere! Nothing is spared! You will see everything in its full gruesome detail! This was at parts, something straight out of Hostel or Saw!

And BOOM then the action kicked in and from there it was just a chaotic gorry mess of blood, dead and revenge!

Carol was crazy in this episode! The best I have ever seen her! Felt like all her build up in season 4 just peaked in this episode!

Rick was great too! The harsh life on the road turned him into a man with no mercy! Cold and no emotions... He had become the butcher!

Until the end.. where my heart just melted and I felt something that I thought i had forgotten!

What an INSANE premiere! Best of this show and perhaps one of the best TV season premieres of ALL TIME!!

Great episode and I heard more to come! I am really glad to see the character development especially with Daryl. In the first few seasons I could have cared less if Daryl were offed, but so glad he is here to stay. Watching the friendships develop are one big reason this series is so great. Looking forward to see what is yet to come!

Fantastic premier that was a bit too dark
pjgs2009 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I would have given this episode a 9 or 10/10 if it weren't for the cannibals and the ending flashback to "then." No Sanctuary has everything you could ever want in a Walking Dead episode: frantic action sequences, fantastic directing, incredible acting, and awesome visuals, especially all the walkers on fire after Carol blew up the tank. The only thing preventing this episode from a higher rating is how dark the story was. It was a crazy plot twist that the people at Terminus were cannibals, but I didn't think it was necessary to show the bodies hanging and cut up like meat and the ending scene where the people who inhabited Terminus in this episode were being abused in a flashback. I loved the moments at the end when all of the good people prevail and get together to travel, but I think the episode should have just cut off after Rick wrote "No Sanctuary" on the Terminus sign, and not gone to the "Then" flashback. Otherwise, fantastic episode, with a few, minor issues like too much brutality. I know it's the Walking Dead and it's a horror show, but this just crossed the line.

The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 1
henry601813 October 2014
Last season was rather disappointing for The Walking Dead. The show began with an awesome concept; an officer awakes after the world has completely changed. The first season was awesome. The encounters with walkers was good and the show exhibited progression. Now the show seems to be going nowhere. I was really hoping the writers would come up with a good idea where to take the gang. The options are endless; heading north or finding a ship or raiding a military base. Now the show is as slow as a snail. The writers seem to be dragging out the show for ratings. I am curious to see if it gets better but I don't have high hopes.

No Sanctuary takes us on an action packed ride but the characters comes first and the superb performances the cast brings
Holt34416 July 2020
No Sanctuary. This episode picks up with a flashback from the early days of Terminus and then picks right back up in train cart with Rick Grimes and company which was the result of the previous season finale, we also follow Carol and Tyreese as they make their way to Terminus. What follows is a visually stunning episode that keeps you suspend from start to finish, this is one of those episodes I never get tired off. It deserves ten stars. It was perfect to end things on a cliffhanger and start 5.01 like this, nicely done!

The episode is wonderfully directed by Greg Nicotero, it's one of the best episodes he have directed and it shows his capabilities and skill. Every angle and every shot is spectacular, simply phenomenal and stunning cinematography. With Greg Nicotero as the director we know that it will be a lot of walkers and unique special/practical effects and that is what we got. He shined at both tasks. The writer team did an excellent job with this episode, truly a superb episode in every aspect. Scott M. Gimple again shows how great a writer he can be, I have always had respect for his early writing days before he made some bad decisions and choices as a showrunner but we know from this and earlier episodes that he is a good writer.

No Sanctuary has a lot of action but also a ton of character development, Carol and Tyreese has the most of it. The strong acting from people like Melissa Mcbride, Andrew Lincoln and Chad L. Coleman doesn't go unnoticed. They gave their best and it became one the most memorable and popular performances. The whole ensemble is super talented, everyone did great work in this episode.

Some final thoughts on the episode. The final flashback shows us how terrible Gareth and his group had it after they got attacked, it makes us care for them. The show does a magnificent job at making it realistic how humans can go from good to bad, we saw it with the Terminates, I think anyone would lose some part of yourself after experiencing all that. The final thought, Morgan's return makes me happy every time I see it and this was maybe the 5th or 6th time I've seen this episode.

Harrowing sanctuary
TheLittleSongbird23 October 2018
Had heard nothing but great things about 'The Walking Dead' from friends and IMDb reviewers. It took a while to get round to watching, both from being busy and also not being sure whether it would be my cup of tea. Finally getting round to it a few years ago and slowly working my way through it, having had a very long to watch and review list, 'The Walking Dead' turned out to be very much my cup of tea and as good as the hype made it out to be, have found it extremely addictive.

"No Sanctuary" is an outstanding start to the fifth season and one of the show's finest season premieres, its acclaim more than justified. It is also one of Season 5's very best and one of the best of the show overall, a dark, tense and gutsy kind of episode instead of the quieter, reflective and action-light kind of episode. It is yet again a strong reminder of how Seasons 1-5 of 'The Walking Dead' to me were absolutely brilliant and seeing the show in its full glory days (Season 6 was uneven, Season 7 was a huge disappointment and am still debating whether to watch Season 8). It is as emotional, complex and as tense as one would expect, at the same time it has adrenaline and guts.

It still shocks me at how an intelligent, well-made (so much so that it is easy to mistake it for a film) show about zombies could be made when so many films have tried and failed abysmally to do so.

Like all the episodes of the show, "No Sanctuary" is incredibly well made in the production values, with gritty and audacious production design, photography of almost cinematic quality, effects that look good, have soul and are not overused or abused and pretty frightening make-up. The music is haunting and affecting, having presence but never being too intrusive.

The writing is intelligent and thought-provoking, not as talky as some of the previous episodes, with lots of tension and emotional resonance and shows signs of character complexity and multiple layer storytelling. The ending is deeply disturbing and wrenched the gut in how shocking it is. In terms of storytelling, "No Sanctuary" is one of the darkest episodes, up to this point of the show and overall, as well as one of the most shocking and goriest without being gratuitous or overkill. The action is thrilling and uncompromising, evoking real terror and intensity, and what it also excels in is resolving the questions raised in the last two episodes of the previous season and doing so in a way that's quick and to the point.

Appreciated the ever strong and still progressing story, where a lot happens and full of different strands without being confused or over-stuffed, and character building and that the pace is rarely dull or rushed, with a taut intensity in the more tense parts. The character writing and the character interactions are what is particularly great here, with some especially fine character writing for Carol in some of the best and richest writing for her that she ever had, here is a Carol that is rootable with lots of intense and moving moments and her character has advanced hugely.

Everything is nicely paced without rushing through the more important parts, much of it being very taut. The world building is already stunningly immersive and effective. Direction is smart and atmospheric, some of the best of the whole show in my opinion, while the show throughout has been strongly acted. Andrew Lincoln and Melissa McBride are particularly superb.

Concluding, outstanding. 10/10 Bethany Cox
