There was a considerable amount of fairly predictable events which occurred in this episode, but that did not detract from the overall quality of the episode.
1. Glenn is alive - shocker!
2. Deanna's son does something stupid - what a surprise!
3. Ron intends to use his newly-found firearm skills to do harm unto Carl - did not see that coming!
4. The wall comes down - no way?!
Despite these very foreseeable events, the episode is still very engaging and manages to keep you interested, which is quite impressive given how predictable this episode was.
I was glad to see that Carol found out that Morgan is up to no good, and will - of course - expose the Wolf and Morgan as soon as she sees who it is that he is keeping within their (now broken) walls. Especially since she just attacked Morgan's ideology when they were gathered around the table and Morgan admitted he let some of the Wolves go. She reminds him: "they burned people alive". She simply cannot comprehend his ideology. She believes that you cannot let them go - they'll just come back later and you'll regret not killing them when you'd had the chance. She's right, of course, as we've seen time and time again: you kill when you have the chance - don't give them the opportunity to make you regret your decision. Even last week's episode with Daryl proves this as he had the opportunity to leave the three people alone yet he went back and tried to protect them, and even gave them a gun, resulting in them betraying him and making a fool of him.
Morgan's ideology does have its merits, though: all life is precious and people can change. These things are true. But his belief system is not perfect and if everyone were to adopt it in Alexandria then they'd all be dead by now.
I thoroughly enjoyed Carol and Sam's exchange:
"If you kill people, do you turn into one of the monsters?"
"The only thing that keeps you from becoming a monster is killing."
We can tell Carol doesn't really believe what she's saying. She's only saying that to try to convince herself - not Sam. She knows that she is a monster - that they're all monsters - and that frightens her dearly. She can't admit what they've become and what they have to be in order to survive. So she tells Sam this white lie in the hopes that he comes downstairs and doesn't think of himself as one of the monsters. She's telling him that it's okay to kill, it doesn't make you a monster - but it does. Carol knows that the only way to survive in a world of monsters is to become a monster yourself, but she's having trouble accepting that she is a monster. Can a monster bake cookies and babysit?
Michonne calling Rick out when he said "we haven't had a chance to catch our breath" was another delight to see. She says he's just making up excuses - which he is. He's clearly still not accustomed to the fact that they're all in it together now. There is no "them" anymore. They're all Alexandrians; they're all survivors. Rick's inability to assimilate into Alexandria is made clearer when Deanna's son does his unbelievably stupid acrobatic manoeuvre and he says shouts: "Tara, you almost died once for these people! What the hell were you doing?!" Interestingly, though, it is only when Tobin (I think that's his name) and Morgan help Rick that Spencer is able to reach safety. Hopefully this acts as a lesson to Rick and he learns that they can only survive if they stick together. That's the only way they'll make it through the mid-season finale.
Rosita also has an excellent part in this episode where she calls Eugene out for being a coward.
Where were Sasha, Abraham and Daryl? I'm betting they'll come in next episode and save the day with their RPGs and cigars.
So, the question that is on everyone's mind: who's going to die in the mid-season finale? Will it be Carl? Unlikely, he'd be too obvious a choice given that Ron was was just about to pull a gun on him before the wall came down. Maggie? That's a possibility. Especially since Glenn and her are about to be reunited. The same thing goes for Glenn - he could easily be snatched away from the group at the last second when they're so close to being reunited - just like Beth was this time last season. This doesn't seem like too far a stretch given there's a Wolf within the walls and plenty of walkers!
What about Father Gabriel? Will he finally redeem himself? Or will his life come to a long overdue end?
It is safe to say that we have a lot to look forward to in next week's episode. I can't wait!
