Awesome animation, somewhat awful story
Freddy_Kasenda6 December 2018
First off, I never expected a Turkish animation could be this good -- how I was wrong. The animation is so great I can't help not to write a review; something I don't usually bother doing. The level of details put into every scene is stunning, the character motions, the physics of things, the visual effects and everything that a good 3d movie should tend to was done close to perfection. As far as the animation goes, this movie is a real winner. But now here comes the unfortunate part: the story. From the beginning, I felt nothing is so engaging about the story. I was honestly bored and could have left the movie after 15 minutes if it wasn't for the animation. I watched the English-dubbed version, so maybe something is lost in translation. There isn't much to enjoy from the dialogs througout the duration, some were crude, some were cheesy and none is entertaining. But again, this is the dubbed version I was watching. if only I could understand the movie in its original language, probably I could have enjoyed it more. However kudos to the team behind this animaton work.

A curio
voyou-703-65535015 September 2018
(I watched the English-voiced version.)

Strange humour. It took me half the movie to start smiling.

Excellent technique though, great scenery, animation and sound.

Main flaws are pacing and continuity issues. The film would benefit from better writing or editing.

Decent animation of a famous Turkish cartoon
olivesandvines17 July 2022
Bulent Ustun's "Kotu Kedi Serafettin" (Bad Cat Serafettin) was a famous monthly comics of the 1990's. Depicted as a stray cat, living in a traditional neighborhood in metropolitan Istanbul, Serafettin, aka "Sero", was a badass, foul-mouthed, villain, sexist, yet a naive and a funny character. In his adventures, he followed is own (macho) ethics. Bulent Ustun's awesome drawings turned adventures of Serafettin to a film-noir like cartoon. Unfortunately, this animation lacks the harshness, and new ideas of Bulent Ustun's drawings and wit. It merely repeats the well-known storylines of former comics.

If you are looking for a children's comics, or maybe an anime, you are in the wrong place. However, miss Kotu Kedi Serafettin, this movie presents a decent animation of Bulent Ustun's famous cartoon.

Best Turkish animation movie ever
nerval-114-7505787 February 2016
Şero is a classical Turkish comics series, it's out-of-boundaries; smoking, drunk, playboy, outspoken cat that basically doesn't care about anything.

It was a great feeling to watch this kind of high quality animation on Turkish movie theaters. Hopefully it will be make worldwide, and people might understand Turkish jokes.

This is not for kids! It's for grown-ups, there is constant swearing, killing, alcohols, drugs, cigarettes etc. This is basically insane if you think of the current status of press freedom in Turkey.

This will be a cult animation movie for Turkey, and hopefully the rest of the world.

Watch this, you'll love it.

Great Movie of a legendary character in Turkish culture
moviecoholic7 February 2016
Everybody knows about the Garfield. The lazy, lasagna loving cat. He would be very sweet cat if you compare him with Kötü Kedi Şerafettin (bad cat şerafettin). He loves drinking rakı (a Turkish alcohol), barbecue, smoking, hitting on other cats on his reign with his famous sentence "do you wanna make up?". He is a caricature character created by Bülent Üstün in 1996.

So now you know about this anti-hero cat lets talk about the movie itself. The script is made of adding up the older famous caricature stories and it can be easily said that şero (şerafettin) kept his origins. There are lots of laugh moments through out the movie and sometimes you just cant stop laughing. Bad language is used which was necessary because of the origin.

The animation was amazing when you think about this movie is one of the first Turkish animation movie. It is world standard from a crew with not that much experience. Istanbul they created is so amazing, you feel like you are in it and only this reason is enough for watching this movie. Apart from the setting characters kept their origin successfully. You can feel the evilness from just a look of Şero.

The only thing that i don't like about this movie is the endless story of the villain itself which repeats so many times that it gets boring in the end.

If you are a fan of Şero or animation movies this is a must for you. Even you don't like this genre this movie can make you smile. Production of this movie was 10 years long and in my opinion all that work created a amazing movie.

A Different Perspective of "Animation"
itswe20 February 2016
Animals as we see in the Hollywood movies, presented human-like nowadays. Why isn't there any realistic "animation"? Animals ain't polite or save the world for a week. They mind their own business. Like the Bad Cat minds its own fish and booze. A definite thing about this movie is its diversity. There is an assumption that animals talk, this is animational constant. But their speech differs in this movie. It's fun to see cats swearing and yelling in the city. They're not bound to humans. Especially cats, as they domesticated spontaneously, because of mutual needs with men, shouldn't be presented as dependent toys. They'd always find a way through. This movie is about finding way for fun. Have fun.

Huge potential is destroyed !!!
legend-is-alive29 May 2016
-Without any doubt this is the best quality animation movie mad in Turkey !!! -Surprisingly good animation quality is destroyed by the story and and the unmatched annoying voices !!! -The story is rushed and has no point !!! -What happens in one scene does not match or continue in the second scene !!! -It seems like they just put bunch of sketch together to make a movie !!! -The choice of the voice actors is absolutely wrong (none of the voices match the characters, specially Serafettin's voice is extremely annoying) !!! -However as I mentioned the animation quality is absolutely wonderful (for made in Turkey) !!! -It had a huge potential and it was just wasted !!! -Watch it for your own entertainment you might find it better, but for me it was a huge disappointment !!!

Total surprise hit IMHO.
dreamstate12325 September 2018
I was ready to toss this into the delete pile in 5 min after I started. That's all I was going to give It. I thought It was surely going to be another pile of crap 3D animation cash grab. I'm still watching and almost done. Profanity, death, gore, sexual innuendo, alcoholism, theft, drunken driving... the list goes on and on. It's actually amusing at times. I'm surprised frankly. This Is no stinking kids movie. It's adult oriented through and through. Well animated as well.

Just left me confused ...
Aktham_Tashtush15 September 2018
Well i don't know if the problem is the English dubbing or the the script itself but i haven't heard that much F words since "The Wolf of Wall Street " !!! i mean come on ... it's like you can't make a funny Anime without adding all of that overused and unnecessary filth !!

I mean the story is meh,, okay maybe not bad , for a developing industry in Turkey but man that was one hell of screenplay !! it was just disconnected and all over the place .. a cat getting shot .. a cat electrocuted to death !! this would have been a really good movie if story was a bit organized .. Anime wise ,, it was really good .. but other than that, i was just waiting for the whole thing to end so i can watch another movie to make forget about it all.

Best Turkish Animation ever
EAM-G9 May 2016
Before watching, you must google who is The Bad cat (Serafettin). If you know him and the story you'll love film twice.

The Language,Alcohol, Smoking...

This makes the Sero "Bad Cat". The details of animation wins 99 of 100! Cihangir, Beyoglu, Taksim, narrow streets whole perfect.

Thank you again for your exertion guys, nice job, well done. A must see animation

Hollywood wait for Turkish animators, a new era will be there.

The details of mice, seagull, grocery man, Father as good as like original book.

Frizt the Cat with more humor and continuity
cesspit-5350519 September 2018
If you have watched, Fritz the Cat 1972 and liked it, you'll more likely also watch and enjoy this one. Bad language is flowing like a water-turd fall and toilet humor is rife. There is an overall moral though, and there is also a sense of order among all the chaos. I felt the poor zapped fella was hard done by myself, he didn't deserve all that beating. That aside, this is an enjoyable watch but not with granny or the kids. Not the crispest animation if you are picky, but you soon get absorbed into the plot and those failings soon get brushed aside and are more than made up for by the unique animated methods and rapid fire scenes and constant twisting mini plots and scene to scene shoots. The perspective the animators used i don't think can ever be emulated with as much success as was achieved here, it was quite something to feel my own chair move when i was trying to follow the movements on screen.

Adventures of our beloved badass cat
bugrakayaalp20 January 2019
As may be noticed from the reviews, this animated movie is not for families, children and snowflakes.

The movie does a great job of presenting the essence of Bulent Ustun's legendary character. It's a beautiful reimagination of Istanbul city life that involves cohabitation of animals and humans. Yes, it involves gore, profanity, debauchery and vulgarity; but you still feel that it comes from a place of love and particularly a love for cats. I remind you that animals are less 'civilized' than humans. Street cats die everyday and they have a hard life (despite people's love). These are the realities of the situation.

Garfield will look very innocent..
osaytac5 June 2022
A typical bad and ugly SOB big city cat in Istanbul.. The film depicts his relation with his owner, or rather servant, and a hot "purebred" chick he wants to bang.

Lots of cussing, lots of action and lots of fun running around 3D modeled back streets of Istanbul.. Not sure if Turkish word plays and sense of humor will make sense in English. Hope the translation crew did it justice.

Great viewing none the less.

Worthless story but a good animation!
aceroydeseo25 September 2018
This a group of random things happening inside a film, the story is not even good enough to be considered a good film, but the animation is interesting to say something good. If this is a legendary Turkish character, then that's the most saddest thing to say about any culture!

First movie I didn't pick my phone up while watching in 10 years.
karynislay20 April 2023
This is a really good movie, the pace is on beat the whole time. You NEVER loose interest not once. I'm one of those people who got the movie's ending from the beginning and this was curveball after curveball. I wish there were a second/third film. I'd love to see other movies from the writer and read the comics. I can't stop raving about this show, I laughed so much, it's definitely not for children but if you're 15/16 they've probably been exposed to this type of debauchery. It's American Dad &Family Guy om steroids, nothing ive seen in America comes close to this type of adult animation! Do yourself a favor and watch this outrageous NOT GARFIELD cartoon you'll laugh, cry, think, pee pee and shart a little but so worth it.

First 5 minutes enough to watch this.
deaden_hellhammer26 August 2017
First of all.. we are talking about an animation which is also observable by children. Second thing is this animation psychologically brings bad behavior to young audience, maybe. There is a lot slang and perversion.

I see our people getting individualization when they see a Turkish made something. They are giving top score for this movie without thinking. We should compare with other animation like Hollywood/Disney qualified movies as well. Because for age of the audience is also important. Usually in Hollywood/Disney's made, they never go to go out except few several basic words in those animation or movies. You cannot hear slang and perversion so much. But this movie..

They should add age restriction to watch this movie.

WARNING: Definitely NOT a CHILDRENS film !!!
QuickMilt21 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Like Sausage Party-2016 this animation is not for any young children or for family viewing. It is so close to an "R" rating it should have been. There is endless continual profanity, a death every several minutes in the start of the movie, lots of stealing and sexual connotations though out it. So that aside, this animation is very well done for a Turkish production, characters are original and refreshing that is all it has going for it. This movie is lacking in a plot which a much better writer could have made this a good movie. The main cat character Sehera the villain or gang leader is always getting what he wants in life but never manages to get a female cat he wants to get laid who cares about nothing else. Very disappointed with no story line but only a Zombie trying to get revenge for his dead cat Princess which Sherra and Cemil electrocuted. Sorry to say it is not worth watching unless you are desperate and it is a rainy day outside with nothing else to do. Instead watch a real animation such as one of the Incredibles or Ice Age films were you will definitely get a laugh out of (& has a plot to the movie).

Absolutely painful
zero18713 September 2018
As a cat lover, I had high hopes for this. But the violence, language and horribly unethical deeds are just way too over the top for me. I can't imagine any parent wanting their kids to watch this either. But hey, if you like watching animals get killed for little to no reason, then this might just be your thing.

sandraacunha7 October 2018
This is not a children's movie! The story is full of violence, animal cruelty. After the first 10 min people letf the theatre with their kids. I hoped that the story would have a twist but completly waste of time. The animation is good but the rest ...

an affront to animal lovers ANYWHERE
cihangircoolforcats14 February 2016
on the strength of your review, my friend and i and went went to see this film yesterday afternoon, excited to see a movie which promised so much.... however, after seeing cats and people killed and maimed in the most violent situations including potential rape, all to audience laughter and merriment, we walked out after about twenty minutes and asked for our money back... now i'm not a prude, nor am i adverse to seeing films like Pulp Fiction.. but this movie was just an obscenity as far as the poor street animals here are concerned...over a million of them.. if this truly appeals to Turkish film goers, then we're fighting a losing battle

Mediocre attempt with one joke
asovijarvi9 February 2020
I had to look up the comic strip after watching this movie as it left me really puzzled what had led to this trainwreck. Apparently the running joke in the source material is swearing, which in the modern Turkish culture is about at the same level as when Sex Pistols dropped the F-bomb in a TV broadcast back in the days.

The animation is okay for the most part, but the big letdown is that the story doesn't really go anywhere. They obviously attempt at some kind of finding your life in family life moment for the main character, but failed to bring it home. At the same time everything else was a mess where swear words and mentions of alcohol usage were dropped like they alone make the best joke ever. There was so much potential where they could have taken this, but they didn't go beyond a questionable attempt at "Garfield gone bad".

This would have been a lot better as a 15 minute student project than a full movie, but as is there's a very loosely written story that lazily binds unrelated scenes together to waste 80 minutes of your time.

BAD CAT
BandSAboutMovies21 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Bad Cat may seem like a parody of Garfield, but in truth it's Kotu Kedi Serafettin by Bulent Ustun. The cartoon was made by Mehmet Kurtulus and Ayse Unal and was self-funded with some of the budget raised through product placements.

It's wild that it ended up on Tubi, but there you go.

Shero is an orange cat that has a bad temper and a hate/hate relationship with his owner Tank. One day, he gets Riza the rat and Rifki the seagull to go get some booze while he and his feline friend Black break into another apartment and try to seduce the gorgeous Princess, but in all the excitement, she's accidentally killed.

Right there, you should know that no matter how cute this looks, it is in no way for kids.

Princess' owner comes back and kills Black in a rage, while Shero knocks him out a window, killing the human. Or so one would think until he's brought back to life and wants revenge, all while Shero is trying to get with another lady, Misscat. Oh yeah. He also meets Taco, who claims to be his son.

Tank has locked his cat out of his home and all Shero wants to do is get drunk and get laid. And maybe finally bond with his son, except Princess' owner keeps coming back from the grave. Can this cat destroy his owner, escape his enemy and finally get some?

After the film's television premiere in Turkey, the Radio and Television Supreme Council fined the Kanal D television channel for airing it. I mean, it has a cat that smokes and drinks!

Despite being made a few years ago and on a budget much lower than your average American animated film, this looks really good. I had fun with it and actually worried for the crew when the cops were shooting at them during a bank robbery. Who knew that I'd be so entertained by this?

Bad Cat offers something different but falls short of being a gem
kevin_robbins20 January 2024
I recently watched the Turkish animated film Bad Cat (2016) on Tubi. The story revolves around a foul-mouthed cat having a challenging day-encountering his estranged son, dealing with his owner's eviction, facing a new love interest in trouble, and stumbling upon a murder. Can the day get any worse?

Co-directed by Mehmet Kurtulus and Ayse Ünal in their directorial debuts, the film features voices like Don Battee (The Matrix: Reloaded), Robert Paulsen (Pinky and the Brain), Kate Micucci (Duck Tales), and Paul David-Goddard (The Sculptor).

There are aspects I enjoyed, such as the engaging dialogue, fun character interactions, and entertaining fight scenes. However, the excessive cursing in the dialogue feels at times overdone. The storyline, with its multiple layers, works better in some instances than others, and certain scenes feel a bit overwhelming. The conclusion is predictable and straightforward.

In conclusion, Bad Cat offers something different but falls short of being a gem. I would give it a 5-5.5/10 and recommend watching it once.
