All you need to know in less than four minutes!
24 September 2017
Not many days have passed since "Shadow Warriors" premiered at the Fighting Spirit Film Festival in London. I was waiting for its release and I was pleased to see another short film revelation.

Great atmospheric night scenes in the city, beautifully choreographed and edited. Promising acting talent by Linda Louise Duan, Samuel Mak, Blake Ridder and a solid score by Saul James.

Having followed Bulent Ozdemir's previous work, one can't help but notice that he keeps getting better and better and this is definitely another full-length movie material, just like his "Setback" short film in 2011.

Blue Jasmine (2013)

Not impressed, just depressed...
26 January 2014
Giving chances to Woody Allen's work is… what I do but, Blue Jasmine didn't make that much of an impression to me. I admit I had high hopes after Midnight in Paris –which I found brilliant- but it didn't work out that well with this one.

Blue Jasmine tells a story about a woman who loses everything after getting a divorce from her crook husband. The film has an overall meaning (don't fall in love with money) but hasn't much to give to the audience than the multiple states of depression the "heroine" goes through.

The cast's consisted of a few good actors like Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin and that's just about it. It's been a low to average film. I don't think I'd recommend it to someone who wants to cheer up. Maybe the only people who would want to see it would be those who are related to the character's struggles. Then again, nothing raises the moral in the end

So Well Put
26 January 2013
A guy walks into… a murder! Hard to get out of it that easy, especially when he is the prime suspect.

Setback is a crime short film written and directed by Bulent Ozdemir and independently produced by Wolf Valley Films.

The thing i enjoyed most was the chance that's given to the viewer to solve the mystery him/herself, looking for clues, as the story goes on. There can be multiple speculations until one gets to the last minutes and says "Oh that's what it's all about". You may be right, you may be wrong but in the end it totally makes sense. I find that special in such a short duration film and perhaps that's what I was waiting for to say that it would make a great start for a full-length movie.

Protagonist Andrew Dowbiggin brings out wonderfully the character's confused and desperate emotions whilst the rest of the cast supports great the film to its completion.

It's a smart, mysterious concept that gives Ozdemir another shot to prove his unique suggestions in condensed storytelling and atmospheric cinematography.

Prometheus (I) (2012)
8/10
Just Let Go
15 August 2012
There are a few things i've learned from all the "games" around this movie. Michael Fassbender has made the film Gods furious (don't ask me why), Ridley Scott is also trying stuff, and viral videos or many extended trailers are bad for your mental health and judgment. So, blow away the fog of prejudice that's fallen over Hollywood, pay attention to the film and find out whether you like it or not, whether it's related to Alien or NOT.

One of the first few premier screenings of Prometheus was in 3D. Still, i don't think that any other film can be as great in 3D as Avatar. Most of the times, during watching, i was taking off the glasses to rest my eyes. It was like watching a 2D movie with an unnecessary filter. My expectations were high, due to the visual effects that were introduced in the trailers, but it appeared that one can pleasantly watch it in 2D (so keep that money for an extra cup of your favorite beverage).

The story is simple. A team of scientist funded by a big technological corporation (Weyland Industries) are setting a course to a distant planet in search of the origins of mankind, based on the "writings" of a cave wall and considering it as a message from the creators of humanity.

The "actual" cast is rather limited. Michael Fassbender performs very accurate as the android who escorts the team to -originaly- help the scientists and plays an important role through-out the film. The other important character is Noomi Rapace's Elizabeth Shaw. I think the film makers wanted a new version of Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley, but no! The rest of the cast is mostly supportive, like Charlize Theron, Logan Marshall-Green and Idris Elba. They're all very good actors but this movie didn't seem like a chance for them to rise up a bit more. Everyone else seemed… dispensable and their actions predictable enough to figure out for yourself on "who stays till the end".

The visual effects are quite rewarding with some really great photography and a few of Ridley Scott's cinematic tricks and camera takes. There are some flaws, if you watch carefully. I see it as a game like Spot The Differences or What's Wrong With This Picture! That's interesting.

Truth is, i was never interested in the Alien movies (even though i'm a huge sci-fi fan). I know their story but none of it got me to follow religiously and blindly Ridley Scott's work -there are other films for that-. Here's the good news: You don't have to have seen Alien to watch Prometheus. If you've ever heard of it, that's good but not essential.

Overall, it's a great sci-fi film, worth watching, makes the difference between all those remakes and comic book based films that are laying around lately. Could be called original (could be) and definitely needs (will be) a sequel.

The Nines (2007)

Lucky Number 9
10 June 2012
The Nines is a fantasy - mystery drama written and directed by John August (also known as one of the writers for Dark Shadows and screenwriter of The Corpse Bride, Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). The story tells us about the lives of a struggling actor, a video game designer and a TV show writer melding together in a mysterious way.

It's a cosmic point of view, it's about signs and remembering. All it needs is some extra attention and an open mind; the rest are being taken care of by a really nice cast. If any of you ever had doubts about Ryan Reynolds' performances, you better watch it cause he's fantastic here. He and Melissa McCarthy have a beautiful and unique chemistry. Some of the actors involved are playing as themselves, which makes the film more real and quirky at the same time.

The whole film has a vast amount of great music. There's not an official soundtrack but you can find and listen most of the songs listed online.

The outcome may not be as rewarding as the rest of the story but give a chance to the unconventional.

Going Down Hard
24 May 2012
Right as you read this, the Somali civil war is still going on. Since 1991. Twenty one years, with casualties reaching up to 500,000 deaths. There, the REAL hunger games are being played. The rest of the world's interference came up with nothing. Even humanitarian missions are being attacked.

Black Hawk Down is based on a book written in 1999 by Mark Bowden that chronicles the United States Army Rangers, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Delta Force, Navy SEALs, and UN forces attempt to capture Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid in Mogadishu and the intense battle that resulted between U.S. forces and local militia and citizens in 1993.

Even though it's a war film, with a lot of continuous action, the cinematography is beautiful and points you to pay attention to the detail. There were a few fast scenes greatly covered and co-ordinated. The whole movie was accompanied with strong ethnic and instrumental music, songs from the 90s and earlier.

What can i say about the cast! It had variety , and talent. With names such as Tom Sizemore, Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Eric Bana, Ewen Bremner, Jeremy Piven, Tom Hardy, Orlando Bloom, Nikolaj Coaster-Waldau and the list goes on. A lot of them have made more than one appearance in various war films or TV series before.

It's a good war film to watch with a lot of information on what's happened and happening in Somalia. And i'll finish this with a quote from the film: "You shouldn't have come here. This is a civil war. This is our war, not yours."

Another great 2012 comedy
12 May 2012
21 Jump Street is really nice action comedy with a lot of influences by its producers, who also were starring in the film. This was Channing Tatum's first attempt in comedy and, like i've said before, it's really interesting to watch how the actor can adapt to any role. Jonah Hill on the other hand is one of the new great comedians of this new film wave. Sarcastic, smart, rebellious. They made both of the characters to learn something from each other. Successful chemistry.

Besides the catchy title that might take you back in the time of the TV series, this film shares only the mission of a couple of young looking police officers that are assigned to an undercover drug research in a high school, as students. Watch carefully though.. You'll find out what i mean.

It's a fun film with good music, fresh scenes and a rather young and talented cast. You have the right to remain silent and watch it.

Lovely, really lovely
10 May 2012
To be honest, i wish all romantic comedies could be like this one from now on. And don't forget to claim your dose of British-ness. So 'Suit Up' and see this one.

Tough men and soft guys. Girl meets boys, boys are spies. Two CIA agents and friends, FDR Foster (Chris Pine) and Tuck (Tom Hardy), fight for the heart of the same woman, Lauren (Reese Witherspoon). So, it's just enough complex for its genre. Which is smart! There are plenty of fun dialogs and word plays and there's action most of the time. Tom Hardy looks good for a nice guy and Chris Pine has his captain James T. Kirk attitude.

This Means War is a great romantic action comedy. It doesn't get boring and it also has a nice selection of music in his unofficial soundtrack. It's worth the watch to have a laugh.

The Avengers (2012)
9/10
It's all about Gamma radiation baby!
6 May 2012
The Avengers was a delight to watch. Almost two and a half hours of comic-like action with Nick Fury managing to assemble Earth's super humans and fight against Thor's little brother who found his way back from the void. Loki is angry and desperate for some attention. He almost got me to kneel! Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is arrogantly gorgeous and Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) is the retro patriotic avenger, while there's an intense love/hate relationship between them that really keeps you wondering "what the hell is going on with these two?". Since i've started like this, it doesn't look hard to pair them heroes up.

Naturally, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) come next. This combination brings up the special human skills of the characters. They are the martial arts, tactics and weapons specialists and keep more of a supporting role in the film, "filling up -well enough- the parts where there's no cgi action".

I must say that Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/HULK) was my favorite, because i could not imagine how "these anger management issues" could ever be tamed. Bruce Banner's zen attitude made the whole Hulk transformation even more exciting and controversial. On the other hand, Thor (Chris Hemsworth). Such a verbal relief to begin with, cause he's just THOR the deity and, oh, isn't he a challenge for The Hulk! He's practically one of the few out-of-this-realm entities who can get slightly close to his powerful energy.

Last, but not least, Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Thor's misunderstood and troubled brother, who NEEDS to get his revenge by any means necessary with the help of his evil army. You'll admit it yourself that he does try hard… without always counting the consequences. He'd be perfect for a psychiatric study! S.H.I.E.L.D's agents are rounding up the human coordination team, with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) being the head of this operation and the only character one's probably gotten used to see in the post-credit scenes of the 'Iron Man', 'Thor' and 'Captain America' films, as well as agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). You'll also get the chance to see Cobie Smulders (Agent Maria Hill), also known as 'Robin' in How I Met Your Mother TV series, making her Hollywood outbreak.

This film consists of a cluster of actors, all getting their respectable time to shine as heroes in Stan Lee's comic masterpiece.

So, here's the thing. If you've never seen any of Marvel's movies, make sure you do before you move on to The Avengers. It'll be easier to understand each character, their background, motives and nemeses. Make sure to wait for the credits to end.

If you have seen all/most of them (or have read the comics), there's no doubt you won't like this one. The action is overwhelming, there's no need to focus too much on performances and DON'T forget to wait for the credits to end.

Haywire (2011)

Good action movie
2 May 2012
Haywire is about a female special ops agent who has been set up while on a mission, and her effort to get herself out of any more trouble for she's still being chased. The film covers the story usually back and forth with many agents involved. Gina Carano and her fighting skills have been chosen for the leading role, alongside an interesting supporting cast such as Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Bill Paxton and Michael Fassbender. Nevertheless, the film is moving around Carano's character. Douglas and McGregor seemed to play a decorative part and Banderas is charming his way through, while Tatum and Fassbender get their ass kicked pretty well! Don't expect jaw dropping performances because mostly it's all about the action.

The outcome looked like a Richie-Tarantino attempt. Lots of action and mystery with a little bit of sarcasm and a weird selection of music. Not bad (David Holmes in charge), but at a few points it just seemed that it didn't match the scenes.

A nice action film. No need for high or low expectations. Steven Soderbergh is just trying stuff. Enjoy!

Wonderful drama
16 April 2012
The Deep Blue Sea is a dramatic romance which takes place around the post-war (WWII) period where the young wife of a British judge starts having a love affair with a royal air force pilot. The confusion and complexity or their situation puts their love into some strong tests. Mostly for their own self-challenge. Rachel Weisz is mature and amazing as a leading actress, and then comes Tom Hiddleston who unveils a beautiful supporting performance and freshens up a little bit the foggy mood of the film.

Terence meets Terence and a wonderful theatrical film comes to life. T. Davies wrote the screenplay and also directed the movie based on a love story play by T. Rattigan. The cinematography is absolutely theatrical. Feels like a never-ending stage. Therefore, expect some -not very long- slow scenes accompanied with instrumental classic music. The story leads you to expect and understand the outcome as it is.

If you want to see a good drama, this romantic one may be it.

Action anyone?
11 April 2012
To save some time, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is a 2009 science fiction action film based on the G.I. Joe toy franchise, with particular inspiration from the comic book and cartoon series G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (which i've never read). And that's all i need to know right now.

Here, the elite military team G.I. Joe that operates outside the federal nets, has to deal with a vicious arms dealer and his feisty company. I hadn't seen the full cast or story before i started the film, so i was pleasantly surprised when i saw Christopher Eccleston (9th Doctor Who) in it. He's… fantastic! I knew Channing Tatum was there too. He can easily pull off such roles and he's still improving. Marlon Wayans and Joseph Gordon-Levitt also make good appearances, alongside Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols. My most memorable characters though, are Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee).

The story was satisfying for an action film. The flashbacks, even though helpful to figure out what brought each character to this point, were a bit distracting, like they were put in a wrong sequence or something. But nothing else matters when it comes to the action and cgi. You'll get A LOT of it. Maybe more than you planned for. I had to watch it in mute for a couple of times due to all the explosions and shooting! The music wasn't much for its, almost, two-hour duration but then again we're talking about A LOT of explosions.

Just hang out with your friends (or however you like) and enjoy some swords and guns and fighting.

The Vow (2012)
7/10
Welcome to the soft side
31 March 2012
While i was waiting for 'The Vow' to be something like '50 First Days' and that kind of movies, surprise - surprise, nothing like that. Still a chick flick but an interesting one to watch.

The story is based on true events and that urges you more to find out how these situations are being dealt with. Paige and Leo is a young married couple living a happy life when a car accident turn things over in their relationship. Although they both recover from it, Paige suffers a serious memory loss that has wiped out a large range of important events in her life. Being married with Leo is one of them. From that moment on, Leo tries to find ways to start winning her heart all over again.

Now if you gotten used to the action man Channing Tatum, get over it (Step Up and Dear John might show you how). I'll tell you, he's very good in this film and i enjoy actors who choose to play parts in various-genre movies and challenge themselves. Rachel McAdams remains the sweet and complex 'Notebook' girl and knows how to handle this role. They made a good match. As always, i'm happy to see Sam Neill -who plays Paige's father here- in any kind of film!

I liked the settings and photography. It's modern, warm and creative. The soundtrack's been composed by Michael Brook and Rachel Portman and carries various tracks by older and recent artists like The National, Voxhaul Broadcast, Scott Hardkiss, even Meat Loaf.

So, it's worth the watch (by both genders) and don't worry, you won't have to shed a tear. It's a nice story.

Young Adult (2011)

Not my cup of tea
24 March 2012
Well, i don't think i can tell much about the plot because it would give away the story. It's a film about a divorced writer in her mid-thirties who decides to visit her hometown and win back the heart of her high-school sweetheart who's actually married and recently also had a child. After that, the protagonist reveals some other, more different, traits. There is a hidden message but the film seems to be focusing mainly on the problem and merely on the solution.

The performances were good, both Patrick Wilson's and Charlize Theron's. I'm not sure yet about Patton Oswalt's presence. I like his humor but that's not one of his best characters.

Not enough music, would be just one observation. The atmosphere was… proper and there were some nice scenes with pretty good photography. So i would say that it's an 'ok' film and that certain people might relate or like it. Dare to watch it. I did.

Nice Try
16 March 2012
Happythankyoumoreplease is Josh Radnor's first personal directing/writing attempt in which he did pretty well, in my opinion. It's a romantic comedy-drama set in New York that has to do with the lives of a group of adults. Some of them are facing the facts of responsibilities, self-acceptance and choices.

Perfromances weren't astonishing but their contribution was rather well for each role in this film. They pulled off their characters part. For those who've been watching Josh Radnor in 'How I Met Your Mother' he may seem quite the Ted but, eventually, you get that it's just Radnor's acting (he's got that Nicholas Cage kinda style). Lots of new actors involved like Malin Akerman, Pablo Shreiber, Kate Mara, Zoe Kazan, and i enjoyed seeing Richard Jenkins again (even for a while).

Sweet music by Jamie Seerman (aka Jaymay) and other artists and classic NY locations and atmosphere. It's not a cinematography masterpiece but it's and easygoing film with a moral message worth to be spread and applied.

One Day (2011)
7/10
For the romantic drama lovers
11 March 2012
One Day is like a 'P.S. I Love You', with some extra tragic irony. The story's based on David Nicholls' book. The film shows the progress of the lives of Dexter (Jim Sturgess) and Em (Anne Hathaway) as years go by, on the same date, after their college graduation.

They're different characters with lots of common needs. Dexter's wealthy life seems to be spoiling him and Em, in her effort to achieve her goals, goes through many ups and downs. Every once in a while their lives mix up as they both try to figure out the obvious. Hathaway plays brilliant in a British accent (she was great in 'Becoming Jane', too) and Sturgess was pretty good, despite the fact that i haven't seen any of the films he's in, yet.

The film is set in Edinburgh, London and Paris. Beautiful locations, under the catchy eye of the director Lone Scherfig (who also directed 'An Education'). The music that escorts the movie is quite good and takes you back in time, with artists like Tears for Fears, Primal Scream, Robbie Williams, Fatboy Slim, Tricky and Elvis Costello.

It's a nice romantic drama with not many major twists and turns, other than those needed to get to the point.

An Education (2009)
7/10
Living a Little
27 February 2012
The story is based on Lynn Barber's memoir. An Education is set in the 60s and London's suburbs where a teenage girl, bound to follow the proper school education, leads her life outside of her 'path' for a while. An older man and his cheerful and intelligent company allows her to live part of her dreams but also to face the consequences of her decisions.

Carey Mulligan's performance was fresh and Alfred Molina's -who plays the father- great. I must say, i didn't enjoy very much Peter Sarsgaard (the playboy) in this film. He didn't seem to pull off very well the English accent. Another actor was needed for that part, in my opinion. Dominic Cooper and Rosamund Pike make a nice weird little supporting couple here.

There's also a very good set of locations, mostly in England's famous round-abouts but in Paris, France too. One thing you can't complain at all, is the music. Jazz is in the air and mixes quiet well with the atmosphere.

Reminded me a bit of Mona Lisa Smile, as far as the moral teachings concerns and the pressure that young women had to go through those years. So, it's not something that you've never seen but it is an interesting story to watch.

Shame (2011)
9/10
Mesmerizing
13 February 2012
'Shame' happens to be one of the best films i've watched this year. I've seen 'Hunger' and I like Steve McQueen's perspective. I find it original, artistic, daring, different. I've also followed most of Michael Fassbender's filmography. He is a brilliant actor. In this case he's McQueen's muse (Abi Morgan's as well). 'Shame' seems to have been made just for him.

Brandon is a character that fits pretty well on Fassbender's acting abilities. He's an accomplished business man, living in a modern apartment in New York, enjoying the respect and company of his colleagues but has a secret addiction. Sex. Whenever an action becomes an addiction, destruction is the next step. That's where Sissy, his sister, appears. Besides the disruption of his 'normal' life she brings up some more issues that make both of their lives even more uncomfortable. Carey Mulligan is absolutely great in this supporting role and has revealed an also beautiful voice talent, which you might have already realized from the official trailer. The story moves smooth, unveiling the character's traits and flaws and also makes some nice setback play towards the end, in a dramatical way. Paying you, really, off in the end! There was all this fuss about nudity and sexual intercourse that never in this film became disturbing. Not at all. It depicted the life of the protagonist but never stamped him. You get to see the edgy point of addiction and you can put it beside any other kind of addiction there is. The dialogs are small and every-day-life awkward, smart, witty, surprisingly brave and strong. Once again, Steve McQueen manages to show emotions and pass it to the audience. The nods, the looks, body language, you just know. No need to explain.

Even though it's a UK funded movie, it was filmed in New York, after a wonderful scene/location selection. From the modern apartment, with the industrial view, to the streets and nightlife of the city. You get the chance to live there for a while. Besides Frank Sinatra's 'New York, New York' song, Harry Escott composed some beautiful pieces for this film, while various artists appear in the musical background like Blondie, Chet Baker and Howlin' Wolf.

I'd suggest it to every adult mind.

Nice Story
4 February 2012
A former alcoholic boxer (Nick Nolte) faces his past in the eyes of his two sons, Tommy (Tom Hardy) and Brendan (Joel Edgerton). Things tend to get personal during a mixed martial arts tournament where both brothers participate.

Nick Nolte gets into the skin of such characters, he's fantastic. Tom Hardy comes from the latest brilliant generation of British actors, very talented, great performance. The theatrical Australian, Joel Edgerton, shakes things up with his 'warrior' side.

At first, i lost the rhythm of the film for a while. Close to the middle of it, it started clearing up to a really good finale, in my opinion. Yes, you might get that Rocky rush here, also. It is exciting. The music's great, suits pretty well. It was composed and produced by Mark Isham. The atmosphere was humid, cloudy and focused on the cage. The matches scenes seem to have been shot with TV MMA show cameras. They move pretty quick outside and inside the ring.

Again, if you're into sport films, with the drama lurking in the background and some good actors, you may like it!

Killer Elite (2011)

Genuine Statham
30 January 2012
Don't let the movie poster mislead you. If some of you thought that this is just another Jason Statham action movie, you're right. This one though, is based on true events that happened in the early 80s. Robert De Niro and Clive Owen filled the supporting actors' blanks of the movie as talented and recognized as they already are. Statham plays an ex-special ops agent who's forced to return to action in order to save his mentor (De Niro) who's captured. A retired member (Owen) of the SAS gets involved and the hunting begins.

I was very impressed by the filming locations: Australia, United Arab Emirates. I liked those endlessly barren places. Also Paris, UK. These guys traveled around the world for this movie! The music is written by Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil and you'll also hear some Dead Kennedys and Kasabian.

Overall, it was an interesting action film. Statham is bad-ass and strong, De Niro is funny, kind and ruthless -all at the same time- and Owen is complex. You'll get what you want in the end.

Deeply surprised
28 January 2012
I was almost convinced that it would be just another Woody Allen's weird movie, but gladly i proved myself wrong. It's a beautiful and inspiring story about an engaged couple and their own -different- expectations that are being exposed during a trip to Paris, France. Gil (Owen Wilson) seems to be drawn by the beauty of this city and needs more time to enjoy the experience while trying to finish his novel. Inez (Rachel McAdams) doesn't share the same enthusiasm. Between their opposing viewpoints and quarrels Gil experiences a personal faerie tale, through epochs where art was flourishing.

The location itself takes you back in time. Most of the scenes where shot at night where the Paris atmosphere is magical and nostalgic. It slowly takes you back to the Roaring Twenties, the Golden Age -and beyond- introducing you to some very interesting characters. In this film i found the supporting actors performances far more interesting than those of the protagonists. Very talented Marion Cottilard, Tom Hiddleston, Alison Pill and, of course the lovely Kathy Bates and Michael Sheen.

Judging by the eras, you ought to expect a beautiful music compilation, from 1890s Jacques Offenbach to 1920s Ben Bernies orchestra and Nat Star. I'd give kudos to Mr. Allen for this one.

The Help (2011)
8/10
Colorful
26 January 2012
Another film based on a novel. This story, written by Kathryn Stockett, takes place in the '60s era and touches the delicate matter of racism.

The place, is Mississippi. The matter, is the other side of the coin. The Help, needs to express and have its voice heard. Emma Stone (Skeeter), in search of her dream in being a writer, gives the chance to plenty African-American maids to introduce their view and tough experiences they have to deal every day.

It's a really emotional film and you can feel the nerve-braking that a lot of people had to go through on both sides of the "game". Viola Davis (Aibileen Clark) does a truly magnificent work, so is Octavia Spencer (Minnie Jackson).

The photography is bright and the locations beautiful. Even though the characters are going through some hard times, it keeps reminding you the beauty of colors and their uniqueness. The music lineup is equally worthy, featuring artists such as Bo Diddley, Ray Charles, The Orlons, Webb, Pierce, Four Seasons and others.

Sweet story, with a humanitarian-historical importance.

Captivating mystery
25 January 2012
When it comes to mystery/ crime genres i'm more of a visual kind of type. I've never read the books, so i was completely unaware and untroubled by the fact that i'd just experiment with watching another movie without any expectations. And i think this is one kind of way to enjoy a film.

For starters, the cast was fantastic! I was only remembering Daniel Craig's playing in this movie, never looked for any information before. And there's, Christopher Plummer and Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright and of course Rooney Mara (she was great). Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) is a journalist who's been assigned to do a research on a missing woman. Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) is a hacker who assists him. It's a lovely mix of mind and science. It keeps you wondering about the crimes and the connections and the psychology. Like, everyone's a suspect.

The scenery was beautiful, gloomy, overcast, creating an additional suspense especially with the foggy locations. Cold colors. You'll have to get cold to get comfortable (that means your emotions, too). Director David Fincher did a great work, and i see that he's bringing up '20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: Captain Nemo' in 2013. Also, 'The Girl Who Played With Fire' is the second book adaptation of the trilogy and it will officially start shooting back in Sweden at the end of the year.

Overall, it's a very interesting mystery film with nice twists. I enjoyed it very much. All 158 minutes of it!

Hunger (2008)
9/10
Very good drama
19 January 2012
This was the first film i saw of Steve McQueen's, and it's actually his first time as a director with Hunger. He gives a more modern-artistic perspective in depicting the last weeks of Irish republican prisoner Bobby Sands. Beliefs are very controversial or extreme here. It's a civil war.

Michael Fassbender's performance was brilliant. As and Irish man himself, he carries some of his great passion alongside being a very good actor. Lost a lot of weight for this film. Did some good work, in my opinion. My best scene is the one with Liam Cunningham. When you see it you'll find out which one.

Even though it was a quite film, it didn't seem slow because there was always some action in almost every scene. It gives you sometime to think -as an audience/observer- through some repetitive actions. Photography is pretty most aligned with the prison atmosphere and those era's settings.

If you choose to see it, just be prepared for another hard true story drama and enjoy the film.

Layer Cake (2004)
7/10
Classic British. Good one.
14 January 2012
Layer Cake was directed by Matthew Vaughn who was also the producer in two top movies in their kind: Lock, Stok and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. This film seems like it has lots of influences from them. It's moving fast with lots of details and info, so you have to pay attention most of the time. I liked the intro very much.

I'd definitely include that amongst one of the best Daniel Craig's movies. Really nice performance as well as Colm Meaney's and Michael Gambon's. The story is about a cocaine dealer who has been given two difficult tasks to complete before his retirement. Even though this story's been told/seen many times, it's not easy to predict what's going to happen so it keeps the suspense without any major -noticable- setbacks or very slow scenes.

It's a nice watch. Classic British atmosphere and music from the '60s to the late '90s. A bit similar to London Boulevard (which i've recently watched), but far better.
