How can a show last so long and still kick ass
the_hollow_life20 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
First off, let me say that I've been a member of IMDb for a while, and this is the first time I actually feel the need to share my thoughts with others writing a review. To me Scrubs is the best show ever, I loved every and each season of it, but I always had the fear that it would soon jump the shark. You know, most series run out of ideas after a while, it's normal, but this show seems never ending, and this particular episode is the very proof of it.

On to the episode itself, at first I thought "Oh jeez, here we go, a musical episode. The end is near." mostly for my hate for musicals, and secondly for the fore-mentioned "fear" that this show could become crap soon.

But was I wrong, I laughed throughout the whole 22-ish minutes of it, it was brilliant to say the least. And the music is so well-inserted inside a storyline that it seems almost needed, plus I must say that all, and I stress again ALL of the performances were great. First of all obviously Broadway star Stephanie D'Abruzzo, a real singer with an awesome voice and acting. But then all the cast seems almost to have a musical background. I knew already of Turk's singing ability, he shows it off in some old episodes, but Carla was a real pearl, she has that bluesy-moody sound in her chords plus I really loved the tango with Turk, one of the best moments.

The best tho was the "Guy Love" song. God, did I enjoy that piece. Definitely worth watching, it changed my mood for the whole day, and I can't thank this show enough for this.

Great balls of fire!

Warning: Spoilers
Not since Buffy's musical episode have I looked this forward to singing by a bunch of actors. And last night's episode didn't disappoint. Surprised at how well most of the cast sang. And am really thankful the music wasn't just there to annoy - it was part of the plot. When a woman complains that everyone is singing, the great doctors at Sacred Heart know something is up. Likely she is crazy, but there just could be something wrong. In true Scrubs fashion, we see bosom buddies Turk and JD, always snippy/always in love Turk and Carla, always mean but deep down nice guy Dr. Cox and the rest of the gang - just in song this time.

If this does not win an award . . .
mikey_editor10 February 2007
The first reviewer is correct; the songs are so well-done and so appropriate to the continuity of the show. It makes you understand most of these folks have theater backgrounds because every mannerism is effortless. I hope they do one each year. Good voices, good choreography, a total package. It made me check on all the backgrounds. Even the guest star (Patti) was perfect for her role. She fit right in without the "guest star" sheen. And, I noticed, some of the regulars were not present which can only mean they don't sing so well and the cast was going for a real hit. They accomplished it. This is so Emmy worthy and the kind of episode which will become more legendary as time goes on.

Oh my...

This was just... amazing.

Seriously, after following this show for six years, I've grown rather fond of it. Even though I considered trading in Scrubs to pursue other dramas, such as Grey's and House and perhaps even Prison Break, I just realized I couldn't do it. I just couldn't stop watching Scrubs, and this episode seriously justifies my decision to keep on following the show.

Everything was just so perfect. The songs were awesome, and they even kept the characters in character. Everything was absolutely hilarious, and everyone's singing was just perfect.

Kudos on the completely MEGA-AWESOME episodes!

Very Good Show
Collegekid200819 January 2007
It has been said that TV shows 'Jump the Shark' when the main cast starts having kids, or if they do a musical episode. Well Scrubs has now done both, and it is working very well.

They worked the music in the musical episode into the plot quite well, and the cast sang it with ease, and mostly good voices. I enjoyed that the music was all parody of real musicals and the songs themselves were funny.

This actually worked quite well within the plot and did not in my opinion do anything to ruin the integrity of the normal show.

This was not the best show in the series history, but it was a very interesting episode.

Greatest episode!
mkeinbinder-002212 February 2022
This episode as ridiculous and hilarious as it is, is amazing! It followed two episodes dealing with postpartum depression which were a major first for a network show. This was the only episode fitting to follow those two groundbreaking episodes.

Fantastic
wjmoore-12 August 2007
I will admit up front I am a fan of musicals.

However, someone who isn't at least entertained by this episode (whether he is a musical fan or not) didn't give it a chance. From the dance steps to the facial expressions to funny lyrics, this episode was entertaining to the core. Most of the humor is not the slap-in-the-face kind of overt humor that one may expect. It actually requires you to be engaged to take in what is being sung about. The whole cast is quite good in their performances and sometimes the lyrics are borderline brilliant. I can only imagine how creative one must be to come up with a Broadway-style song when the subject is "poo" or "guy love."

When you're done watching, it really feels as if you just finished watching a full production rather than simply half an hour of TV. And every time I watch, I laugh out loud.

Dang!

Every once in a while, something on television reminds you that it's not just the vast wasteland it's been said to be. This was one of them.

Most TV shows who attempt a musical show fail embarrassingly. This was perfect, perfect, perfect. They nailed the writing, composing, singing, dancing, the humor, the characters, the quirks. Oh yeah, and remained medically astute.

After my wife and I picked our jaws up off the floor watching the first 15 minutes, we realized we couldn't record all of it, and after finding out it was a rerun prolly won't see it again for a while. So it's our first TV show purchase on iTunes.

I think we'll see this one again - at the Emmys.

And now I have to see Avenue Q.

Greatest musical episode ever
tozzi_rossella17 January 2020
Musical episodes are frequent in tv shows, but the quality of this episode is the best I've ever seen. The songs are good and the lyrics are funny, they match perfectly the style of the show. So, when you hear the songs, they look like a very long JD's fantasies. And the greatest fact is that they are all very good singers! This is amazing!

The surprises never end with this show
spudnutsncoffee19 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I am not a fan of musicals. Not by a long shot.

Still, this 30 minute musical extravaganza, replete with a veritable cornucopia of clever numbers, each performed without the slightest hint of self-awareness by all the members of the cast, is hard not to watch.

I really was impressed by the effort put into this, especially by folks that are clearly not singers (Dr. Cox, JD, The Todd, Janitor and Kelso). Some of the lyrics are dizzying in their complexity. Dr. Cox's rant number was especially challenging and I have no idea how John C. McGinley pulls it off, but he does, an splendidly so,

I wish this episode had won the 5 Emmy's it was nominated for. It won 2 of them however.

Slap me...go ahead, what was I not thinking?

They're having a Scrubs marathon, let me back up. This is the first Scrubs episode I've EVER seen, yea, really. I can hear all of you who watched this series. I deserve whatever you want to throw my way.

What a great episode, 6-6, Musical for me to see. Incredible. The singing and dancing, and yes, the comedy. Hilarious and well well done. The choreography for the dancing was well done. The singing, what range, and what a great story.

I knew of Scrubs, but never tried it, I don't know why. Maybe too much going on back then for the nine seasons it aired. I noticed that for the approximately 3,300 ratings on IMDB it averaged 8.9. That's a great score. I haven't read the remarks, am looking forward to seeing what folks had to say, both good and bad.

What a great first episode of Scrubs for me to watch.

Not my cup of tea...
schuey10027 January 2007
Scrubs is one of my favourite 5 shows of all time. It's a wonderful series. However I just don't feel that this one worked. Maybe I'm one of those horrible die hard fans that hates any kind of change.

I also didn't feel as if the score was great. I've seen the Buffy musical episode and I thought musically it was very good. The music in Scrubs however wasn't thought out as well, nor did it fit in with the overall 'vibe' of the show.

But at least they tried to do something different. So full marks on that.

I also feel that maybe they felt that they needed to do something different because this series has become a bit predictable and lacks the spontaneity and isn't as inventive as past series.

Amazing tribute to the Musical
bthughes25 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The story line of this episode is classic Scrubs, genius. By making a reason for the musical itself, helps make the story flow well. The greatest part was when I went back and watched the show again. Throughout the show I thought I had recognized the tunes, then on my second time I realized that a good portion of the songs were from famous musicals. Such as the song when they are waiting for the test results is a tribute to the Grease finale, and the song right before the surgery is from the finale of RENT. I know that many of the others are from musicals also, I just can't think of which ones. Truly a marvelous piece of work.

Awesome and Hilarious
TheaterRaven19 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was hysterical. And I'm a huge fan of musicals, so to see this was great.

Everyone in the cast had surprisingly good voices (Kelso and Dr. Cox surprised me the most) and the songs were catchy and entertaining. The only way they could have made this better is if they parodied "The Phantom of the Opera", which I'm a huge Phan of, gotta love Michael Crawford!

I would have to say my favorite numbers are "Welcome to Sacred Heart" and "The Rant Song". In "Welcome to Sacred Heart", the singing and energy was great from the cast, as well as the choreography. "The Rant Song" was just hilarious--pure Dr. Cox comedy set to music.

Bravo to the "Scrubs" cast, and please, do another musical episode!

Excellently done!
srwood-2836112 April 2022
This is my first time watching Scrubs (I missed the boat on this show when it was originally airing) and so I had no idea there was a musical episode in the series. Imagine my surprise when I happened upon this one today. In short, this was excellently done!

I started off skeptical once I realized it was a musical episode, because I've seen a lot of these on a lot of tv shows, and many of them are just not great. But I was quickly won over - this one is by far the best I've seen. It had the typical quirks of a musical episode, but also didn't feel like a one-off, novelty episode like so many others have - it actually advanced the main character storylines just as much as the patient storyline, and wove the singing in with the rest of the story quite well. Loved it!

Excellent play on musicals, with some medicine thrown in
allisonawe22 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This episode could not have been done much better! First of all, the entire concept was, while somewhat implausible, seemed well integrated. An aneurysm could cause strange echoing in hearing, causing the patient to hear "singing." Second, the songs were very well written! They were fun to sing (even the less silly ones) and worked well with the storyline. The actors had surprisingly good singing voices, and had obviously worked very hard towards this.

Finally, this episode retained everything essential to "Scrubs." An uplifting storyline and poignant message combined with hilarious moments and characters makes "Scrubs," and "My Musical" had all these elements. This show, like all other episodes of "Scrubs" that I have seen, surpassed expectations and left me feeling happy inside. I hope it did the same for all other viewers.

The Best episode ever.
ShaneKillen25 July 2008
Funny and original, I have heard some of the actors in the series sing before and I looked forward to seeing this bunch in a musical. I was not disappointed most of the cast sang well, the songs were a joy having us all clapping along. It must be said that the songs were not there just as an after thought and that they fitted extremely well with the continuity of the show. My favourite was Turk and J.D's duet "Everything comes down to Pooh!". Though this was by no means the only performance to be recommended check out John C. McGinley's performance then check him out in Platoon. It was so good that when it was over I switched to ParaComedy+1 and we watched it again, except this time I recorded it as well!!

Incredible! (Spoilers ahead)
boo-u20 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers ahead - be warned! Before this episode, I was determined to marry Zach Braff simply because of his performance in "Garden State". Now I learn that he can sing and dance! In my opinion, he's the perfect man.

The songs for this episode were written by the creators of my favorite Broadway musical "Avenue Q", which made me all the more excited to watch it. I admit that going into it I was nervous: I perform on stage myself and I know how hard it is to sing and dance in front of people. However, I soon forgot my worries from what I believe was the opening song: "Sacred Heart". It reminded me of the ending of the Avenue Q song "It Sucks to Be Me" where Princeton is welcomed to his new home, which was not at all a bad thing. JD and Turk's first duet about discovering the patient's problem by checking their stool was absolutely hilarious and the lyrics were questionable in true Avenue Q fashion. "Guy Love", their second duet, was incredible and I couldn't stop laughing.

The song played before the finale actually reminded me of "We Go Together" from Grease, which I think was the intention. And the finale truly was wonderful and, like all good musicals, almost heart-breaking.

The only one who looked like he was lipsynching was Dr. Cox; he just seemed a little bit late. Stephanie D'Abruzzo was absolutely perfect as the patient who could hear the singing and I loved that she was cast in that part (for those who don't know, she was Kate in the Original Broadway Cast of Avenue Q). The musical style was perfect for the wacky world of Sacret Heart and the actors showcased their hidden talents wonderfully. But don't think that just because I said that it was reminiscent of Avenue Q, it doesn't mean that it's not original. On the contrary! Even though the music is similar, the songs are completely different; and anyways, it was the mention of Avenue Q that really got me excited about this episode.

In short, it was amazing, and I totally want to see them do another one.

A timeless classic, and what we miss today 😌
njdaymond8927 April 2024
The pinnacle of mid 2000's writing, and the last vestige of TV shows that felt as if humans had a hand in making them. Today we have CGI overruling practical stunts, bland writing so as to not offend the weak minded, and a distinct lack of sincere humour.

I first watched scrubs on it's release. Nothing has really come close since, and this episode highlights why; this musical episode encompasses everything Scrubs tried to achieve. It makes you laugh, forwards the story, makes you feel, makes you cry, and provides pure escapism for 22 minutes. This is what entertainment was always meant to be.

Jump The Shark Musical
Johnny_West14 January 2021
Rhyming and talking in a sing-song voice does not create a musical. Not a big fan of musicals, but I have seen enough of them. The choreography of the scenes was totally laughable, in an unfunny way. The songs were incredibly lame except for a couple that did not sound horrible. A couple of songs about poop and "doo-doo" were really bad.

Like others, I stopped at every scene long enough to know the song sucked, and hit fast-forward all the way to the end. I never thought I could dislike any episode of Scrubs, but this one was just pure ridiculous garbage. This musical about the crappy job of hospital interns was a big stinker.

Terrible
oldl7423 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I have watched Scrubs since the pilot, I have all the season on DVD, I have both CDs and I have downloaded the rest of the songs from the show. What I'm trying to say is I love this show, but my as I stated in the topic this episode was terrible.

I hated the music, don't get me wrong the cast did an incredible job, but the lyrics of certain songs made no sense and were not funny. I could go on and on for why I hated this episode, but IMO Scrubs should never do a musical episode again. This was the lowest of the 6 seasons. I just hope the show can go back to its better days, because IMO most of this season has been terrible

what a waste of a previously unused fast-forward button
noukmetdewijdebroek24 January 2007
Being a fan of this series for quite some time now (watched every single episode and looo-hoo-hooved it) I was quite shocked when the first song kicked in.. O dear god... please no... please let them not have spoiled my evening by making one of those crappy "musical-theme-episode-thingies"..

But they did! I still can not believe it.. I have read some of the other comments here, and I can assume they are right-on, for all your musical fans, probably superb performance by the whole cast and whatnot... But I DO NOT WATCH A COMEDY TO WATCH A MUSICAL! If I would want to watch a musical, I would go to some theater and do so (or neh, I would probably download a musical and watch it from my couch where I can enjoy it with some wine, a smoke, and a decent toilet break..) But that's besides the point. Point being: I was hoping to watch another episode of my favourite COMEDY show. Not a musical. I am not into musicals, I find it a backwards and obsolete way to transfer a story, let alone a joke.

Still.. I watched quite a bit of it (in horror..) The singing was well done, but the stuff they were singing was NOT, I repeat NOT in the least funny! OK the bit about the poo... but NO! not even that came close to the kick I usually get out of watching Scrubs.

So.. the final thing I have to say here would be something in the line of this: If you are making a musical, fine, I don't blame you, I am not the target audience so I don't care. But if you are making a comedy series that has grabbed my attention and affection... Please stay away from the "What shall we do this time... flat out of ideas... you know what, let's pump a few grand extra in and make it a full-blown musical!" Spend the extra cash on extra writers for extra funny gags. Or some of that tearjerking drama scrubs got lately, that'll serve me just fine. But stay away from songs, or you will... erm.... read my wrath!
