A great episode of introduction of hiltop fill with good development and good sequences of action
MomentIMDB24 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In the previous chapter Jesus is introduced to us. today we are introduced to hiltop. The chapter begins with a talk between Abraham and Sasha, showing the progress of their relationship. The chapter works very well to show the personality of the new characters and manages to be quite entertaining and with a good rhythm. Maggie had very good development throughout the episode and I liked her talks with Gregory a lot and Xander is very good and integrates the character very well. the badass moment of the episode was when gregory is stabbed and rick, daryl and abraham fight and rick slams one and gets stained with blood, i love you rick. Abraham had good development throughout the episode, managing to integrate that evolution along with the plot. in short, a great introduction episode, with good character development, good action sequences and plot evolution.

Your World is About to Get a Whole Lot Bigger
ThomasDrufke29 February 2016
One of the beautiful things about the Walking Dead and perhaps for some frustrating thing, is that they like to take their time setting plot points and characters up. 'Knots Untie' was a perfect example of that. The story was furthered as we ventured into the new territory known as Hilltop, and we got some small tidbits about Negan and the direction we are headed this season. With only 5 episodes left, I don't think we will see the full arc come to fruition, but I do expect to see Negan himself by the final 2 episodes.

It was a big Abraham episode as he is now struggling with his true desires and feelings towards Rosita and Sasha. While I don't ultimately care who he decides to spend his time with, I like seeing this other side to Abraham that we don't normally get to see. It was all the more interesting watching him go around the group asking about relationships and "settling down". This show has been on for a long time, so anything that gives each character something new to do is always welcome.

Speaking of something new, Rick and Michonne dealt with the repercussions of them sleeping together, except that there were no real repercussions, and rightfully so. I liked that everyone on the show was just okay with it. Nobody was jealous. Nobody was saying "well that doesn't make sense". Even Carl said it was cool. I think that's the way we as an audience are supposed to feel as well. After a week of thinking about it, I totally accept it.

So as Jesus brought the group to Hilltop, they came across a small group who nearly died in a car accident. One of them being a doctor, which significantly helps everyone's cause. Then you have to wonder, which doctor's days are numbered? The show has always been seemingly keen on only having one capable doctor at arms length. Should we worry about the new guy or Denise?

We were then introduced to Gregory, the leader of Hilltop. As with pretty much every surviving leader on the show, he's kind of a jerk. It was great seeing Maggie take on the leadership role and negotiate deals with Gregory for Alexandria and Hilltop. Especially as Maggie pulled nearly the exact same deal Negan apparently did as well. But before all of this could happen, we got the big fight of the episode. Of course, a fight couldn't break out without Dark Rick throwing a few blows. I always love seeing that. His line "What?" after he stabbed a Hilltop man in the throat couldn't have been more perfect.

All of this led to the final deal that Rick and his gang proposed to kill Negan and rescue a man from Hilltop in exchange for supplies and crops that Alexandria desperately needed. It does worry me just how nonchalantly the crew agreed to go kill Negan. Of course, they don't really know how badas* Negan is. They don't read the comics. But it's still something to keep an eye on. Especially because Daryl was the first one to propose it. Hmmm…. However, we did end on a sweet note as the crew passed around the picture of Maggie and Glenn's baby.

+Abraham gets something new to do

+Carl is cool with Richonne

+Furthered the plot

+Brief Dark Rick moment

+Sweet ending

We'll win...but at what cost?
LiamCullen629 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was quite clearly setting the groundwork for the coming episodes. But the first fifteen minutes or so - I felt - dragged on fairly slowly.

It started off by focusing on a character we're now all very familiar with: Abraham.

Abraham is broken. We've seen it before, and it was emphasised again in this episode. Heck, just look at the necklace Rosita made for him: it's a shard from a broken car headlight - the perfect encapsulation of Abraham's character on a necklace. He's a man who - on several occasions - lost the will to live. He has been searching for meaning and purpose, and he thinks he's finally found it. But with Rosita or Sasha?

He seems to have finally committed to the idea of living when Daryl comes over and asks if he is alright after the altercation, to which he responds gleefully that he is. We know very well how powerful Abraham is, and if he had truly wanted to overpower the man strangling him, he absolutely could have. He chose not to because he wasn't sure if he wanted to live or die. In fact, if you go and rewatch that scene, it almost looks as though he's squeezing the man's hands around his throat even tighter.

What was more peculiar, though, was that after he pulled himself up, the necklace Rosita made for him was left behind in the dirt. And we all know how TWD likes a bit of foreshadowing...

Once the episode started to draw similarities between our survivors and the ominous "Saviours", that's when I found that it really started to get interesting.

TWD highlighted several parallels between Rick's group and the Saviours: both deal in violence, both have killed Gregory's people, and both have demanded half of their supplies. In next week's episode I'm sure we'll see even more parallels, and will be forced to challenge ourselves: are our survivors good people? What truly separates Rick's group from the Saviours?

Honestly though, let's recap: someone said that the first thing Negan did when he came to their camp was kill somebody, and then demand half of their supplies in exchange for not attacking them again. And what does Rick do? He comes in, kills one of their people, and then actually takes half of their supplies! One of the randoms even comments something along the lines of, "Wow, this is even more than Negan got," suggesting that Rick's more like this mysterious Negan character than he'd like to think. One can only imagine how their first meet will be...comic book readers know what I'm talking about.

Also, Abraham had a great line in the RV when he asked Glenn: "when you were pouring the Bisquick, were you trying to make pancakes?"

And how good a negotiator is Natalie? I mean Maggie? Talk about a poker face.

Rick's reaction to everyone staring at him in horror after he essentially just bathed in someone's blood was great too: he takes a look around, sniffs, then sort of just shrugs his shoulders and asks incredulously, "what?"

Unfortunately, once again there was no Carol in this week's episode. An episode without Carol will immediately struggle to be a top-notch episode. Bring back Melissa McBride!

Oh, and do you think someone could maybe give Carl a haircut? That'd be a real plot twist!

Setting Up For More
marianne-mag-joseph27 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this episode very much. Maggie has nice scenes in "Knots Untie", I just love Cohan's acting. The story leads to an interesting direction and I can't wait for more. This episode sets up for more and something big. I'm really worried about Heath and Tara. Will they be OK on there supply run? The Hilltop Colony along with characters like Gregory are introduced in a very well-executed way. Season 6 is such an eventful season. I love it. To be honest, this season (along with all the other seasons of TWD) are better ... binge watched. The one-week-waits are just pure pain and longer breaks like that make you tend to forget certain details or supporting characters.

New territory
TheDonaldofDoom28 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This episode moves WD forwards to exciting new places it's never been before. Not only does the group meet another group that isn't hostile to them, but also for the first time it looks like at some point there will be trade between groups - probably not in this season, but at some point. And trade of course is one big step towards rebuilding civilisation.

This episode has other things in mind though and there are some twists and shocking moments where it does not play out how you'd expect, including an unexpected graphic fight scene. It's just a really strong, fascinating episode that has suddenly given Season 6 a direction. Even though it's mostly setup, there's a lot of tension. I think it's odd how hastily Rick and Daryl accepted the deal to kill Negan considering how little they know, but eh. It's an excellent episode that means the rest of the season will likely be gripping.

What?

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is the start to the many future companions (and enemies) our group will face.

Jesus gives our group a tour of "The hilltop" colony which will only grow in relevance from here.

We see Maggie start to take on new leadership.

Rick delivers his iconic one liner. (what?)

Lots to love about this episode. 10/10.

Full of intrigue, and very faithful to the comics.
TouchTheGarlicProduction28 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit, as a fan of the comics and a viewer of the show, I absolutely loved this episode. I have never seen an episode of Walking Dead that is this faithful to the comics. I was expecting this episode to just be the journey to the Hilltop; a tension-filled road trip focused on questioning Jesus, much like season five's "The Distance".

That turned out to be only first third of the episode. We actually get to see the the Hilltop in this episode. We get to meet its leader. We learn some more about Negan. We get to see a deal brokered, and a hopeful ending with some foreshadowing to coming darkness.

Most Walking Dead episodes have something that really annoys me, but every line in this one filled me with joy, both for how close they were to the comics and the amazing new opportunities being opened up for the show. Much like the last episode, this is mostly setup, but it's not filler. I knew that they were blasting through this section faster than their usual pace (they spent an entire season on THE FARM), but even I wasn't expecting them to cover this much ground in this episode. It makes me wonder if they'll be introducing Negan sooner than the finale. He could really even come in as early as next episode.

All in all, this is a fantastic episode, full of intrigue, twists, and very faithful story and dialogue choices.

"Knots Untie" is a promising episode of "The Walking Dead". Now Rick and his team will confront Negan and The Saviors and probably someone will die. Gregory does not seem to be a reliable man and he will probably be up to no good in the near future. My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "Knots Untie"

Coming together
TheLittleSongbird9 March 2020
The second half of the inconsistent but still watchable Season 6 started off with a bang ("No Way Out") and saw 'The Walking Dead' back on form after the let down that was the mid-season finale ("Start to Finish"). Was a little disappointed in "The Next World" and thought that its writing and storytelling was not always perfect, but appreciated the change of pace and what was done with the character relationships.

"Knots Untie" is not 'The Walking Dead' on top form perhaps and again it is not as good as "No Way Out". It is definitely a step in the right direction though and to me it is a better episode than "The Next World". It is a set up episode, with it setting things up for what's to come, but it mostly does it very well and doesn't fit my definition of a filler episode as there is a lot of intrigue, it is not a case of nothing happening and things do feel like they are advancing in storytelling and characterisation.

Perhaps the first 10-15 minutes are a little on the slow side and didn't need as long to set up.

Although the script here is more even than in that for "The Next World", with a more consistent tone and more tautness, there are times where characters make decisions that are rather rushed and perhaps extreme even too. Do have to agree about Rick and Daryl's sudden acceptance with the deal being a big example of this and didn't make much sense as a result.

However, "Knots Untie" looks characteristically great, suiting the gritty mood of the show more than ideally and all while still being beautifully shot. The music and audio are not intrusive yet still have presence without being too constant. The direction has both breathing space and momentum, so generally it doesn't feel too hurried or too drawn out. The script is intelligent and taut and the episode marks the first appearance of Gregory with a lot of promise.

Once "Knots Untie" gets going, it sets up what is about to come beautifully with lots of intrigue and a fair bit of tension without being too heavy-going. The ending is also quite sweet. The character development has far from gone backwards with it still advancing, being in particular a big showcase for Abraham in his biggest and most interesting appearance in a long time. His chemistry with Sasha is beautifully done. Maggie also has a meaty role and it is one that sees her significantly advanced in a way not seen for her in a while. While all the performances are top-notch, Michael Cudlitz makes the biggest impression and is incredibly compelling in making Abraham's conflicts suspenseful and emotionally investable.

In conclusion, very impressive. 8/10

Welcome to Hilltop!
and_mikkelsen11 February 2024
As præmisser, the world just got a whole lot bigger in this episode, with the introduction to a whole new community, as well as new characters!

The Walking Dead keeps adding new elements to keep things from going too stale, and this episode was no exception! This is what we need as we move into the second half of the season!

We get a great introduction to Hilltop, how its gonna affect the plot in the future, as well as a taste of the dominating influence The Saviors have, and what they are capable off!

Even with a lot of dialogue we still get some action to keep things interesting and tense!

Now the conflict can begin!

Not Feeling Hilltop Colony
ginaolson4 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
So I've been thinking about the events that happened on Sunday and a few things stuck out to me but before we go on, there will be spoilers in here if you haven't seen "Knots Untie" just skip over me like I don't even exist and come back after you've seen it. You've been warned!

Proceeding now! So, as I was saying, there were some interesting things going on in this episode. The rude awakening of Rick and Michonne in their birthday suits from Jesus and Carl's non reaction to realizing that his dad is hooking up with Michonne. I think Carl likes this idea! It's not his mom but she's bad ass and can handle her own!

The group going to Hilltop Colony, seeing some bad signs coming up to it, but still moving forward didn't seem very cautious. It looks like the place has been around a while and is fairly self-sufficient with the HUGE exception of having an army to protect it. This leaves them at the mercy of any group that has weapons to take advantage of them. This is exactly what Negan and The Saviors have been doing, but it seems the deal the Greg made with just won't cut it any more. The fact that their people are so weak to submit to Negan and try to take out their leader shows that he must be a pretty bad and ruthless dude. Can't wait to meet him!

Maggie proved to be a pretty bad ass negotiator! First being completely put off by Greg's advances to dominating his broken ass after he's attacked by his own people! Hopefully Greg learned a valuable lesson from the whole ordeal! Not only to not mess with Maggie but food is one thing albeit necessary, but it can't fight for or defend you.

The whole Abraham and Sasha thing is getting a little weird. Abraham obviously has feeling for her but he's also torn between what he doesn't have and what he already does have; Rosita. She definitely is all in with him but he's not with her. Looking forward to how that whole bomb explodes.

There was more than a little foreshadowing going in this episode. As Maggie said "It's going to cost us something". The battle begins! We're going to war!

What?
snoozejonc23 January 2022
Jesus takes Rick and others to his community.

This is a strong episode that sets up the overarching narrative quite well to move in a different direction.

The Walking Dead is superb at showing societies developing from their most basic elements. Now a community has been properly established in Alexandria, like a mini nation state, it's time for cross border relations with other communities. Naturally, this looks like it will unfold in a bloodthirsty and confrontational way, with Rick at the heart of all the violence.

There is one fight Rick gets involved in here that is darkly funny. In fact his reaction to onlookers is a priceless moment, reminiscent of a classic scene in the show Deadwood. On that subject, this episode has somewhat of a Deadwood tribute when the focus moves to a new location. It's a bit western frontier in its layout, plus the music is very similar.

The story and characters have definitely been reinvigorated since the time jump and I am expecting that more horror, tragedy and those muddy waters between good and bad to likely follow.

Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus and Michael Cudlitz are on top form, plus the rest of the cast are strong as ever.

"Good gracious Ignatius" -Abraham Ford. Abraham's relationship with Sasha grows. I wonder how long that will last. Jesus tells the group about Hilltop and that it is a lot like Alexandria. Wait? So you're telling me after they introduce the sh***y place of Alexandria that turned the already s*** show into a reality t.v show, now there is a second one. They arrive at Hilltop where they meet the leader of Hilltop, Gregory, who is an a**h***. Some people arrive and they mention that Negan killed some of their people. What of the people who came back stabs Gregory and then gets into a fight with Rick. Rick kills him and then says "what?" afterwards. The only good part of this episode. Jesus tells Rick and the group about the Saviors. They make a deal. Rick and his group take out the Saviors and Hilltop gives them half of their food, or something like that, I already forgot.

The episode is notable for its introduction of new characters of the Hilltop community and the challenges of building alliances in a world where trust is a rare commodity
fernandoschiavi17 March 2024
Jesus explains that he's from a community called the Hilltop. His job is much like Daryl's, except that instead of searching for new members, he searches for other settlements with which to trade. Rick and a few members of his group go to his community to confirm his story. They save a small group of Jesus' people along the way.

Abraham is continuing to date Rosita, but has begun having serious feelings for Sasha. During the road trip, he asks Glenn if he and Maggie had actually planned to make a baby. Glenn responds to the affirmative, which amazes Abraham. As Glenn explains that the community's survival depends on taking chances and trying to get on with a semi-normal life, Abraham silently begins to wonder if perhaps he should take a chance and follow his own heart.

Once the group arrives at Hilltop, they meet the leader Gregory, who comes off as arrogant and selfish. As Maggie and Gregory discuss trade options, a group from the community returns. One of them stabs Gregory, saying that he has no choice because his brother is being held hostage. Rick kills him. Jesus explains that the Hilltop residents are under the thumb of Negan, the leader of a group called the Saviors. The Saviors are brutal killers, who extort everyone they run across. Hilltop is expected to "share" half of all supplies they find or grow, or else Negan will order people to be killed.

The Survivors offers to rescue the man who is currently held hostage. They will also wipe out the Saviors, in exchange for food, medicine, and supplies. Gregory reluctantly agrees to the deal. On the way back to Alexandria, Glenn and Maggie proudly show off a sonogram photo of their unborn child.

"Knots Untie" is a tense and suspenseful episode that follows Rick and the group as they encounter a new community called the Hilltop Colony. The episode is notable for its introduction of new characters, including Jesus, a charismatic and resourceful member of the Hilltop community. The episode also explores themes of trust and diplomacy, as Rick and the others must negotiate with the leaders of the Hilltop in order to secure their cooperation.

One of the most memorable scenes in the episode is when Rick and the group are introduced to Gregory, the leader of the Hilltop, and must navigate the complex politics of the community in order to gain their trust. This scene highlights the challenges of building alliances in a world where trust is a rare commodity.
