Beth rises to the occasion in this story building episode
alex-dhaliwal19972 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
For the first time in the show, I can honestly say that Beth's character is intriguing after some serious character development in this episode. Initially, her character was boring in season 2, but after tonight's episode, I see beth as a survivor who is able to get her hands dirty without having to lose herself (humanity) in the process. She showed the audience that she is brave enough to speak out her mind and deal with the horrors of the post- apocalyptic world, which is seen as she absolutely ridicules Officer Dawn's philosophy on "building a system" where you "are needed for the greater good of society". What makes this even more impressive was that beth did this, despite knowing that she would get beaten by officer dawn - a controlling, abusive, and delusional physcopath. Beth also displays a certain level of intelligence that illustrates her experience as a survivor when she confronts the coward of a doctor. He gives Beth wrong instructions in treating a patient - who is also a doctor - in order to save his own ass and maintain his worth in "the system". however, Beth sees through his lies quite easily as reveals him for what he is: a coward. Her escape from the clutches of the demented police officers with Noah was thrilling to say the least, shinning the limelight on her as she kills a dozen or so walkers. Her newfound bravery, mixed with a sentimental yet brutal side to her character has made Beth more likable than ever before in this show! This episode had a mix of suspenseful character development and thrilling scenes of action where Beth rose to the occasion and showed her true colours as she helped Noah escape (despite being captured herself, where she smiles)! Cannot wait for what angle the writers take Beth's character on in future Walking Dead episodes! Best Season Yet!!!

Whats Beth been up to!
and_mikkelsen30 January 2024
This episode was a very different episode from the previous ones in this season and therefore it might turn some people off as it kind of bring the whole plot to a halt!

However i like how Beths character is handled and the introduction of Noah! She really has changed much and is not affraid to act or speak her mind to those in charge! Really shows how far she got, spending time with Daryl!

Noah also becomes very likeable quickly as this kind helpfull guy!

However the new characters, the Police Officers, very quickly becomes unlikeable! I dont thi k i wanted to see someone die as bad as Gorman! Dawn also makes for a great new villain! Thinking the weak owe something to the strong!

Underrated (by at least 1 point)
grondonamanu1 December 2020
This is a pretty solid episode. They introduce to us a new group of creepy cops and Noah, an interesting character. Even if you don't like Beth, you can't deny this is an important story to be told. Also, the ones who said this episode is boring: did you really watch it??? Come on!

An important episode
joseph-voll-beliebt2 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
So why I use this big word "important"? The answer is easy: I want to know MORE about other survivors, how they live, how they actually survived the last months and years. The people who took Beth are interesting. And the place WHERE they are is even more interesting. This well-written episode is thrilling and absolute fantastic in it's way to show a world where everything is s***. I really care for Beth and don't understand why so many people think she's useless and that she can only sing and stuff like that. People like you are the real ***holes in an apocalypse. Pick out just strong people, throw away weak and "useless" people. No humanity anymore. All in all: A really good and intense episode, don't miss it!

First Deception in this Wonderful Fifth Season
claudio_carvalho3 November 2014
Beth awakes in a hospital and she finds that she is in Atlanta. She learns that she was found alone on the road and rescued by the despicable Officer Gorman (Ricky Wayne) that brought her to hospital ruled by the tough Officer Dawn (Christine Woods). Now she is under the care of Dr. Steven Edwards (Erik Jensen) with a broken wrist and bruises. Beth befriends the servant Noah (Tyler James Williams) and discovers that everything has a price in the place. When Noah discloses that he intends to flee from the place, Beth offers to go with him. Will they succeed in their intent?

"Slabtown" is a cold shower in this wonderful Fifth Season with a deceptive episode. The plot shows Beth and new characters that live in a hospital in a strange and flawed society. Unfortunately neither the story nor the characters are engaging; actually they are forgettable. My vote is seven.

Title (Brazil): "Slabtown"

Note: On 18 April 2016, I saw this show again.

What Happened to Beth?
g-bodyl5 March 2015
This is the fourth episode of the fifth season of the Walking Dead. Indeed we must ask ourselves, what has happened to Beth ever since she was kidnapped the previous season? Well, we finally get our answer to that question. This is a slow episode and quite frankly, one of the least entertaining episodes to date. But it is semi-important to show us what happened to Beth. But there is quite a shocker cliffhanger to be had.

In this episode "Slabtown," Beth awakes and finds herself in a hospital under the control of a strict policewoman named Dawn. Beth is not happy how the place is run similar to a boot camp. Beth befriends one of the pages and together they plot a way to escape the hospital.

Overall, this is a good episode but it's nothing amazing, especially after the first three episodes. But then again, it's important that we not forget about Beth. The whole hospital setup was intriguing, but Beth in a lead role may not have been the greatest move on the creators part. But it was an interesting episode to watch.

My Grade: B

A terrible, confusing episode
poppa-bruns17 January 2016
So far, I'm really liking the Walking Dead, and glad that it's become one of my "go to" shows to watch (any time except dinner.) But even a good show has its share of clunkers and Slabtown is one of them.

First, the setup of this episode is extremely confusing. It begins, like many WD episodes, in the middle of the action. But the starting point they chose was so far from the beginning that it created an unnecessary amount of confusion, leading me to wonder, who are these characters? What's going on? Did I miss an episode? It kept throwing character after character at us as if we already knew who they were, how they related to the story and to each other. It was so bad, I actually had to stop Netflix to make sure I hadn't skipped an episode.

Second, Slabtown is an example of WD's own tropes starting to wear out their welcome and (dare I say it?) become predictable. Trope 1: any group of survivors other than our own are going to be bad guys. Trope 2:Anyone trying to rebuild civilization in any form is foolish and evil, just like Terminus or Woodbury. The only answer, according to the writers, is to roam the landscape, scavenge and forage. Really? In all of human history there's no examples of survivors banding together?

Despite these complaints, it was still an enjoyable and watchable episode. Always nice to see the characters figure out ways to "game the situation" with the walkers to their advantage (this time holing up in a multistory building *AFTER* blocking all access to the upper floors.)Side note-it's very peculiar that, during this run of episodes, Maggie does not wonder at all what happened to her sister. NOT ONCE.

Low key, slow paced but great none the less
waterhouse_melons3 November 2014
You cannot deny that this episode takes Season 5 of The Walking Dead down a notch. Somewhat unexpected by me, the storyline here follows Beth since being kidnapped in an earlier episode with Daryll. We find new characters as her position in the zombie apocalypse is in the hands of corrupt police officers who are trying to rebuild society from a hospital.

We have a guest appearance from 'Everybody hates Chris' which kind of ruined the vibe for me personally, I always love to see 'new' actors rather than big names as they are always destined to go either way: last the remainder of the entire show (end of season 6+!) or have a cameo role.

The storyline from the start to midway of this 45 minute episode is a 6 at best, but the directors obviously want you to understand from the base up where Beth is and how she got there. Once past the halfway point in this episode, the viewer finally realises why this episode is rather lacklustre compared to those before it, totally changing the review score.

I'd say that the cliffhanger at the end isn't so exciting as the rest but I am really looking forward to Daryl and Carol's branched story. Overall, this is an episode that introduces the viewer to a fresh scenario. Not every episode is going to be jaw-dropping and this is a good change of pace.

Beth, I Hear You Calling
michaeljcummings2 November 2014
This was an intriguing episode-long on "huh?" and "what did he/she just say?" moments and short on action and it doesn't so much as explain the Beth Situation as create more questions: Who are these people? Is their story really as simple as it appears or is there something much more insidious beneath the surface? At times, I grappled with the tone of the episode and with some of the minor characters I was unsure whether they were "wow, that character is clearly faking it and not what meets the eye!" or "that character is exactly what meets the eye and is just kinda a so-so actor who you can tell is acting." The tone was also a little Roger Cormanish/B-movie - which I really didn't mind - maybe it was all the uniforms and accents and a hospital setting but I kept expecting the female "cop" leader to pull off her wig like Kimberly in Melrose Place. And please: enough with "The Young and the Limbless"-I am having phantom pains in all of my extremities this season. Finally, like the other episodes this season, it was just a little predictable and tied up just a little too neatly. Welcome to Beth 3.0!

It's all about Beth
daniaal_085 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The reviews on here are highly unfair. While some may struggle to appreciate the episode it really is an example of how strong the writing and direction is of the walking dead. While Beth may be a B grade character, someone hard to relate to and often very bland the cast of supporting characters this episode really raised the bar. I too must admit Beth was bland at times and that it would have made sense to add a more engaging character such as Maggie into this scenario. Nevertheless this episode persists to prove why the new season is the best. The walking dead is a show that always limited looking at an urban landscape and preferred the rural setting however after three seasons mainly based within the woods it was a breath of fresh air to see Atlanta again. The hospital story line is definitely needed as it has been years in a zombie apocalypse and seeing what else is happening in the world definitely thickens the plot. As for Beth i think she had come tremendously far. She used to be whiny and weak and while she arguably was both of those things by the beginning she has definitely developed from here naive roots. Her smashing the jar over the officers head and shooting all the walkers in the basement in the dark was amazing. It goes to show how much stronger she is, definitely surprised by her good skill at killing. By the end she is clearly a lot stronger. Instead of taking anymore of Dawns patronizing comments she retaliates, she may have gotten a black eye but at least she is fighting. Noah was an amazing edition to the cast, only been here for one episode and I already like him more than Rosita. He's kind, caring and definitely someone the group could use. It was shocking to see him leave Beth behind but I am more than confident he will be returning as I believe he is the one with Darryl in the bushes. The ending was a great way to top of the episode as Carol arrives!Hopefully she will add a lot more dynamic and interest to the hospital story line but I cant hope wondering what Beth was going to do. She was approaching the doctor with a blade and this just goes far to show how Beth is a fighter. She has come a lot further than that girl who wanted to die in season 2 and is this time fighting to live; I hope she lives on. As for what I predict I believe that Noah ran into Carol and Daryl and explained that he tried to escape with Beth. Carol coming into the hospital unconscious on a stretcher is an act and she is in there to get Beth out and soon the whole group will be at the hospital to fight. To finish I believe the episode was great, I can see how some people may not enjoy it but as far as writing and development goes this definitely did the show a favor and it is definitely setting up for an explosive conflict. It was great to see the city and I hope we much more of it and I am desperately looking forward to seeing how this plays out!

'The Walking Dead' goes to hospital
TheLittleSongbird3 November 2018
Had heard nothing but great things about 'The Walking Dead' from friends and IMDb reviewers. It took a while to get round to watching, both from being busy and also not being sure whether it would be my cup of tea. Finally getting round to it a few years ago and slowly working my way through it, having had a very long to watch and review list, 'The Walking Dead' turned out to be very much my cup of tea and as good as the hype made it out to be, have found it extremely addictive.

Season 5 started off extremely well, brilliantly in fact. For me Season 5 had the most consistent start quality-wise, none of the previous seasons had equally brilliant first three episodes, that are up there with the most gutsy and powerful episodes of the show, like Season 5 did. It still shocks me at how an intelligent, well-made (so much so that it is easy to mistake it for a film) show about zombies could be made when so many films have tried and failed abysmally to do so.

The fourth episode "Slabtown" though disappointed somewhat while still having a number of good things. It is not as strong reminder of most previous episodes of how Seasons 1-5 of 'The Walking Dead' to me were absolutely brilliant and seeing the show in its full glory days (Season 6 was uneven, Season 7 was a huge disappointment and am still debating whether to watch Season 8). It is important in providing development for Beth and is an important story-building episode, it just feels a little bit of a let-down after such a promising start to the season.

Certainly "Slabtown" has a number of good things. It, like all the episodes before it, is superbly made. It has gritty and audacious production design, effects that are well crafted and have soul rather than being overused and abused and photography of almost cinematic quality. The music is haunting and affecting, having presence but not being intrusive.

There are moments of thought provoking writing and emotion. The beginning does intrigue and wrenches the gut, very creepy, and the conclusion has power. There is some great character development for Beth in "Slabtown" even when focusing on fewer characters and the hospital setting intrigues and gives the appropriate creeps.

Whether one enjoys "Slabtown" is largely down to whether you like Beth as a character. Quite a number of 'The Walking Dead' fans don't, don't mind her personally but do think that there are far more interesting characters in the show. Really did appreciate her development here and she is the most interesting and rootable she's been in a while. Emily Kinney gives one of her better performances here and Tyler James Williams is a creepy standout of the rest of the cast.

For all those good things, it would have been a monumental task following on from such a brilliant first three episodes and inevitably there would be comparisons and it is a disappointment in that regard. It is slow in spots and lacks surprises and suspense, predictability does creep in.

Also a little on the bland side compared to the previous three episodes and by top 'The Walking Dead' standard, the guts and adrenaline were evident, as was the intensity, but not quite there consistently.

Overall, good but didn't blow me away. 7/10 Bethany Cox

It's a bit Confusing and just plain boring
sirdjb-122 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
So I'm watching this and just asking why Beth hasn't asked any of the logical questions? She just wakes up in a strange place with strange people in a community which is obviously governed by a totalitarian leadership and doesn't ask why she can't leave or what's going on? Or what's the rules? It just severely frustrated me. I can only assume that when writing the script for this episode the team thought they were going to try and be ambiguous about the plot... They try to make you guess but was all just so bloody predictable. I'm sure Emily Kinney is a great actor too! But she is unfortunately playing one of the most atrocious characters ever (in my opinion). And a hole episode that revolves around Beth? I'm not being flippant, I'm sure others will agree, but no one wants a Beth episode! I mean come on, give the fans what they want.

Refreshing change of scenery
snoozejonc22 December 2021
We find out Beth's situation since she disappeared.

This is a solid episode with a fairly intriguing premise that expands the overarching narrative.

The best aspect is that it shows another perspective of the zombie apocalypse from a group of characters in a different environment. It's a bit early to tell how good it's going to be but I found it relatively compelling.

Some characters are better than others. Dawn seems a relatively plausible leader considering the situation and the doctor is also quite well written. These are characters clearly depicted to be doing what it takes to survive and maintain control of their destinies. Gorman is a pure one-note baddie and you can predict what he is going to say and do in virtually every scene.

Emily Kinney and Christine Woods give strong performances, particularly in their exchanges together.

Some of the art design is superbly macabre, especially what we see at the bottom of the elevator shaft.

For me it's a 7.5/10 but I round upwards.

This one was like soured out milk
amss19106 November 2014
Well, the episode was probably a necessary move and a bitter pill which the Walking dead staff might have to swallow because sooner or later it had to be shown.

Beth played by Emily Kinney is a hapless girl with neither the strength nor the imaginative brains to work out smart moves like her other colleagues. For a greater part of the entire series up till now she has been shown a feeble character but in this episode she has risen to the occasion and justified her struggle which turns out to be a failed attempt eventually. The antagonists did a fairly okay job and nothing really spectacular if I must say.

Nevertheless, lets hope things turn out to be good eventually now that Carol is in the hospital. I hope she does some neat tricks to make everything even.

Not the best but exciting add to the series narrative.

The Walking Dead - Season 5 Episode 4 - "Slabtown"

Episode: Slabtown

We've approached the halfway line between the beginning of this season and the midseason finale and in this episode the audience are finally shown the whereabouts of Beth, who got kidnapped in episode 13 of Season 4. However, I thought this episode lacked a lot of what I hoped it would be as I thought it wasn't eventful for something we had been hyped up to see for so many episodes. It was good to find out where Beth finally was and who captured her and the introduction of new potential villains was very exciting but I felt that this episode had much more to deliver to its audience. In this episode, Beth awakens in a new place which appears to be a hospital. However, when Dawn, the police woman in charge explains to Beth where she is, Beth begins to think her new so called sanctuary is a dangerous place to stay.

Even though the episode wasn't that exciting for me, it made it difficult to choose a scene in this episode that stood out to me. However, I did enjoy the dialogue between the Doctor and Beth. It got personal between both characters which is what I enjoy watching. I like how they both are attempting to realise their purpose in this new world that they live in, especially with Beth as her attitude is very "not bothered" when it comes to what happens next, an aspect not considered in Dawn's new safe haven. The Doctor, a cowardly yet intelligent man, seems frightened of this new world that they live in and I thought him talking about what he does was inventive as it was different from the typical Doctor's occupation, it seemed to me that he is trying to keep his mind off what is happening in the hospital as he is very secretive about it when mentioned. This did keep the episode alive with an unknown narrative.

Beth had to be the character that interested me in this episode above all the others. I was also disappointed with the representation of the people that kidnapped her, they didn't give any presence and didn't possess any threat to the series from what I could gather in this episode, however, it is an early introduction for them so things could change. Beth, the struggling to survive teen who lived day after day sleeping in broken down cars after the fall of the prison, awakes to find herself attached to a drip in a hospital bed, clean and undisturbed. Her suddenly being like this makes her question that something isn't right which is interesting as this is what she was looking for since the apocalypse occurred. It seems that her character represents the fall of old fashioned society and that things will never be what they used to be but you can still survive, a very interesting aspect that can be taken from this episode.

In terms of camera-work and direction for this episode, I thought that the setting was brilliantly constructed. In my view, there was nothing better than a hospital to entrap Beth from the rest of the group as it developed an eerie factor about it. Also, hospitals are stereotypically scary when the public are asked about them so I thought it was great to bring it into this show, it shows the directors really understand what discomforts the audience. The camera shots kept everyone involved in the episode as well as featuring off screen activity when Dawn is whispering to her other colleagues which added mystery to the narrative. All in all, the construction was of the hospital was very good whilst the camera-work was just above average but yet still inventive in some parts, especially at the end when Carol came in on the hospital bed and the musical slow motion.

As an episode, I wouldn't have considered this one to be an "outstanding" episode which was a shame for the audience when they were so keen to find out who took Beth. It was enlarged for something that was quite small when it came to the conclusion of the kidnapping. However, I am still intrigued to see what these new villains are capable of as I expect Rick's group will attempt to rescue her and Carol. The setting was the best part of this episode as it was very attentive to detail and created a mysterious safe haven for these survivors but letting the audience detect something isn't quite "safe" about it, keeping them in the loop, wanting to carry on watching despite the downhill in the series from this episode. Not the best, but still opens up chances for different things to happen which I'm excited to see.

Beth still not convincing
kumru-can6 November 2014
I have been a WD fan from the very beginning and haven't missed a minute of every episode. I gradually got emotionally attached to several group members and felt very sad that we lost a lot of them down the line. Every time I watch Beth, however, I feel sorry for her that she seemingly doesn't have the natural talent to connect with multiple viewers. In earlier episodes I had the same weak connection with Carol. However Carol recently rose to the occasion and I really hoped that Beth would do the same. Damn, I even started to like Bob!.

Unfortunately it seemed like a deja-vu when watching Beth, the only thing missing was that she did not sing any tune in this episode! Overall this slow paced episode was enjoyable to watch and several scenes were top notch. I still believe that she could grow in her role, but I sense that she will meet her maker in the mid season finale. Nevertheless my overall score is a solid 7, because I liked the cliffhanger, zombie splattering and overall acting. The multiple stories developing throughout this season make me hungry for more. Keep up the good work WD team!

Warning: Spoilers
The group just put down a bunch of cannibals like the wild dogs that they were... So now we are introduced to a group of creepy cops? Who cares?! I don't care about the cops, the doctor or Beth. Sorry.

The intern who escaped at the end of the episode was the most interesting new character of the lot. Oh and btw, if i see another person fall and twist their ankle, I am going to scream. I think that one was done to death, in the 2nd Friday the 13th movie 30 years ago.

The most I see this amounting to is Rick 'n crew come to the rescue, there is a shoot-out, the rescue happens. Rick 'n crew prevail.

Like I said before... >yawn<

Beths Fate revealed as The Walking Dead dips in form
sirajq3 November 2014
Slabtown was not an atrocious episode by any means. No. It was tense, well acted and fairly entertaining for 43 minutes. But on a whole, it was highly forgettable.

The entire Hospital set-up was done well, with the 'antagonists' wonderfully creepy, but quite predictable. Emily Kinney was surprisingly solid this episode, though she still cannot express herself as diligently as her co-stars. However, thankfully the show does not seem stale, as the cliffhanger ending further propelled the multiple plot-threads of the show, meaning NOTHING LIKE WOODBURY.

Overall, while predictable and pretty forgettable due to fairly simple character work, Slabtown is still at times riveting and focused, providing viewers with 43 minutes filled with blood and death. 7.4/10

So much like healthcare in the US
drbarbc-526-51746611 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
It has been a while since the episode aired I know, but I am now just watching it & had a few thoughts. Beth "needed" medical care & then she had to "work off what she owed." I believe this is an intentional reference to all of us who are enslaved for our survival. How many hours do we work just to survive? Whether we need life-saving care or meds to control chronic illnesses, we work long hours to pay for what is free in other countries, the freedom to be well. I was recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis & will need medicines that I have been warmed will cost between $15k - $20k per year. I NEED them to prevent my body from destroying my joints. So, in this fictional post-apocalyptic world, some things haven't changed. We too are enslaved & we "all have a job to do" just to survive. Overall this isn't the best episode of the series, but it is certainly thought- provoking.

An different episode, yet very predictable.
SpoodermanDerp3 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
*SOME MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD*

"Slabtown" has the right Walking Dead feel in to it and the right amount of suspense and thrills to engage you. However, all of these things thrown into the episode feels accustomed, familiar and predictable.

The episode starts out slow and introduces us to a whole bunch of characters we have less knowledge of. We know this episode will waste time to develop these new characters and most importantly Beth. We know that Beth will realize that it won't be easy to trust the new surroundings around her. We know that walkers will come by sooner or later and will do something that will cause inconvenience to the main characters. All of these stuff piled in to one episode is very predictable unlike the past few episodes that opened up potential to a remarkable season. This episode falls short of giving us something unexpected and will entirely engage the audience to the episode until the very end. I do admit there are some well done scenes in the episode. Like the way they showed the walkers as Beth obliterates them were well shot and the visuals were great, and I think the episode did great on delivering its purpose which was to change Beth's character which I presume will be done for more characters in the following episodes. Yet even at it's obvious high points, the low points are more noticed. The episode was predictable, I didn't feel entirely engaged as the episode progressed. I was really expecting for more intense scenes, sure there were but they all felt way too predictable which killed the suspense. The episode was watchable in it's own right, but I wouldn't like to watch it for a second time or more.

So after the 3 excellent episodes that we were given, we might be going downhill after all. The episode wasn't really a terrible piece of trash like I said, it had it's high points, but the low points are more noticeable. -With a predictable plot, -Predictable scenes that killed the suspense, +Great development for Beth's character.

Verdict: 7.4/10

Did you want to know what happened to beth? well we tell you in a whole episode
MomentIMDB26 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The episode solves the incognita of the whereabouts of beth, which was left in doubt the previous season.

the plot of the episode could last only 20 minutes, but the writers took a whole one.

positive points:

The hospital environment is interesting and a change of set and I liked it.

The new characters are interesting and have a curious past and present and I like the way they handle themselves in the hospital.

Noah is a great character and very nice. their relationship with beth was interesting and they had good chemistry.

the relationship between beth and dawn is the best of the episode in terms of interaction. Dawn is an interesting character and I hope it has great importance.

the strength of the character of beth was incredible, throughout the episode it was growing and developing more.

The best scenes are the death of Gorman and Beth trying to escape.

Carol is in the hospital. how do I get there?

Bad points:

I still don't find out what relevance the new characters will have.

The pace of the episode is low and focusing on just one protagonist was not good.

EK cannot emote well at all

I find it very hard to enjoy an episode where I have so much trouble connecting to a character. Emily Kinney simply does not have the ability to portray her emotions in a way that feels real to me. It takes me out of the episode every single time. Tyler J. Williams was very good in this episode, and the other characters were sufficiently creepy enough to make me very uncomfortable. I spent the episode tipping back and forth from being bored, or being creep-ed out. I did not feel the episode revealed enough information to warrant 45 minutes of air time. It seemed very slow, and we still are left wondering what the purpose is of the place they are being held. All in all, I doubt I would watch this episode again.
